• How do I turn a router into a wireless bridge

  I'm trying to get my HD satellite receiver connected to the internet - it has an Ethernet port on the back but my networking equipment is all upstairs. I had the idea of connecting a spare wireless router to the box with an ethernet cable and getting that wireless router to talk to my "main" wireless router (the one with the ADSL connection) to supply internet access. I believe this entails getting the router to work as a "wireless bridge", but I don't know how to do this. Currently, the ADSL line is hooked up to a NETGEAR DG834G. The other two "spare" wireless routers I have to act as the bridge are :- Huawei HG520b Netgear DGN2000 BT Homehub I'd prefer not to change the "main" router (cos I'm used to its web admin UI) - does anyone know a way I can achieve the connectivity I require with the equipment I have?

• Wireless networking on Gnome on Ubuntu 9 / 10

  So here's my problem: I have some netbooks (ASUS eee, and ACER Aspire Ones) that I've been tasked to set up as kiosk machines, locked up tight for normal users. I am a command-line, server man, so this gnome malarkey is all a bit new to me. I found a lovely 9.04 kiosk livecd that installs and runs exactly as I want it to, but I can't get the wireless working. So I dropped on a full 10.4 distro, and wireless works straight out of the box (so hardware is good) - all I needed to do was right-click on the network connection icon, enter my SSID and password (WPA/WPA2) and away it went, perfect. Further investigation on 10.4 distro shows that /etc/networking/interfaces is virtually empty (just auto lo iface lo inet loopback in it), even after I have set up the wireless thru the gnome taskbar applet (is that the right word?). So where does gnome / ubuntu store the network settings to bring the blasted wireless connection up, and what do I need to do on the kiosk version to get wireless running?

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

  I have a HP Pavilion TX2000 tablet PC with me with windows 7 OS running on it. I used to access the Internet using my D-Link DIR 615 wireless adapter on the tablet and it used to work quite fine until one day, when I hibernated my Windows 7, the wireless went off and the problem seems to persist even after my hard efforts to clear it. I checked if the router works fine, and yes it did as my iPod was still catching wireless signals on the other hand, when I checked mu device manager, I realized that I now had no wireless driver. I checked on HP's website for one, but ironically even they didn't have wireless drivers meant for my tablet for Windows 7. Please help me find a solution to this problem. Further queries will be entertained as frequently as possible. Thanks.

• Windows 7 Wireless Network Adapter Stopped Working

  I have a Windows 7 Ultimate machine where the wireless adapter all of a sudden started having trouble connecting to wireless networks. Whenever I go to a new place and try to connect to a wireless network, it says that the DNS server is not responding, and tells me to go unplug the router and try again. After several locations in a row telling me this, I began to realize something was wrong with my adapter, not the routers. I am no longer asked to identify the security level for any new networks (Work, Home, or Public) like I used to be (it defaults to Public now - with the park bench icon). Often, resetting the router doesn't even work. Running the Windows 7 troubleshooter doesn't give me anything better than the advice to reset the router. However, the adapter will still connect to the wireless network at my main office without any problems. Does anyone know why a wireless network adapter can get so finicky so suddenly? Thanks!

• Bridging wireless and wired networks on Linux box

  I have the following setup: modem + router - - - - -Ubuntu box on master mode.........wireless devises. Ubuntu machine connects to Internet on wired network. I've dhcp3-server, masquerading, and wireless card with master mode on Ubuntu box. The issue is Ubuntu connects to the router on NAT. The wireless devises connect to the Ubuntu box on a NAT too (though different). SO my wireless devises are behind two NAT networks. The solution I am looking for is Ubuntu should forward dhcp requests to the modem+router, and Ubuntu should act as a switch or a bridge that allows wireless devises to connect to the wired network. So the modem+router should act a main router.

  I have verizon fios internet service. I believe they use a Wireless G router, but I just have one question. I currently am using a 54mbps wireless pci adapter in my Windows 7 custom build. It drops the internet connection all the time and is starting to get very irritating. I'm thinking about buying a new one, but all the 300mbps cards on newegg are wireless n. So my question is, will a wireless n network adapter make a difference with a wireless g router?

• Wireless slow, but very odd

  I have a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop, internet through the wireless timeouts. Even though it connects fine to the AP/router. The computer had a virus (searchnu?) and I backed up the usual and restored the laptop to factory image. Problem is after the restore the internet through the wireless the same still... and connected via wired and everything worked fine. I was able to update the whole system. Internet worked perfect, speed great. But the wireless still was pitiful. Ping tests with wireless are interesting: Google= 18ms Gmail= 18ms Yahoo= 1023ms 8.8.8.8=30ms Microsoft= Request Timed Out Bing= Request Timed Out msn= Request Timed Out even though I get 18ms with google, the pages take a long time to load. Is this a root kit? is it the wireless card in the laptop?

• Linux will not activate wireless after device has been re-enabled

  Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again. However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.

• Can't get wireless on macbook pro 8,2

  I'm a linux Newb, and I have tried several of the fixes listed to try and get my wifi drivers to work, but to no avail. Does anyone here know why this isn't working for me, or better yet, how to fix it? • ubuntu 13.04 - wireless settings help

  Im having problems connecting my wifi in Ubuntu 13.04 So i was wondering if filling in the data manually ie: the IPv4, IPv6, the SSID and BSSID info etc. I did try this before but maybe i put in the wrong data or maybe not enough Would that make it work?? I just dont know how to find out some of the data you need to put in or if im putting the wrong stuff in??? Im new and its confusing. does anyone know the solution?

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 along with Windows 7 on the same laptop - Dell Vostro 3560. Now, on Windows 7 I can access to different wi-fi networks. However, when I am logging onto the Ubuntu section (after re-starting my laptop) - an error message appears: Disconnected - you are now offline When I take a look at my network menu (in the upper bar on the screen), I see that no network is found (and I have a few of them in the area. ). I tried to look around but really could not find a concrete practical solution to this specific problem, would appreciate any solution from anyone out there that had this problem and solved it.

• Could not connect to wireless unitl reboot (nl80211)

  I'm using Samsung NP900X3C. I have problem with occasionally connecting to WIFI, with Ubuntu 12.10. Sometimes my computer could not connect to WIFI "blab", neither after reboot computer. Only solution is to restart WIFI hotspot. It's public WIFI, used by many users, that don't have that problem. • Installer says I'd need a wireless firmware, but WLAN works without it out of the box

  While installing 12.04.01 (Alternate) on a netbook (Samsung N150Plus), Ubuntu informed me that I'd need the firmware brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw. I skipped this step. If I understand this page correctly, the mentioned firmware is a WLAN driver. However, after the Ubuntu installation was completed, the WLAN worked out of the box. After a few minutes, Ubuntu informed me that there is a firmware update available, which would be the mentioned firmware. Do I need to install this? Is Ubuntu using some kind of "lite" WLAN driver and I might run into problems with certain networks in the future, if I don't use the firmware? Would there be benefits in using the firmware? (maybe longer runtime because of lower consumption?)

• How can I install wireless drivers without internet?

  [Ubuntu 12.04 LTS] I have a HP Pavilion dv6 and I need a Broadcom driver (closed source) to access the internet. However, I need to download that, which I am unable to do because I do not have internet access. My ethernet port has always been broken and I have not been able to access the internet since I installed Ubuntu. I need to find a way for me to install those drivers desperately. I still have Ubuntu on my USB, which for some reason, did have the ability to install that driver (I think it's due to the fact that it already has it somewhere in the files). On my USB Ubuntu, I have that particular driver installed. I was thinking that if one of you knows where drivers are installed, I could locate those files on the USB Ubuntu, then plug in an additional USB to copy them; restart my computer to the harddrive Ubuntu and then install the files from the (additional) USB. I would really appreciate help since to me a computer without internet is useless.

• Broadcom 4365 wireless driver with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel

  I used this package to install the driver on 3.2 Kernel and it was working perfectly. Unfortunately the system used to freeze randomly with 3.2 kernel so I installed 3.4 kernel, now there is no freezing, the only problem is that my wifi card is not working, I tried to re-install the package, but didn't work. I can see the driver in the "additional drivers" and it say that it is active, but when I execute iwconfig it doesn't show up.   after having installed ubuntu 13.04 i can not connect to the internet wirelessly or wired? can only connect to internet by using "try ubuntu" via ethernet cable, ive tried seeking help in so many different ways yet getting no positive outcome at all, will someone please explain why i can only connect with ethernet while i have the cd in the tray? ive also tried downloading b43 drivers to connect to the internet but apparently i dont have enough disk space, what is going on here? i have the disk in the tray now at the screen where you can either try or install, if someone could give me a step by step from here it would probably cut out all this hassle of me not knowing whats going on

  I am starting to think I simply need to accept a small loss and sell my new ASUS K73E. Because I really don't enjoy computing when I have to deal with Windough$ and this windows 7 64 bit on my new ASUS is even worse than the old machines with XP. I have written to ASUS and they simply say "We don't support Linux" and while Ralink's website says they do support Linux I can't get anyone to tell me what model Ralink card might be in my machine.   I've been experiencing this perhaps slightly odd bug. It works flawlessly in Lucid, but not in Maverick and Natty. I find it seems to work when I'm booting a partition everyday (as I do for my main 10.10 partition) but for my 11.04 testing partition it's a real pain - usually refusing to connect. So given that I have both a working (10.04) and not-working (10.10 and 11.04) installs, how can I troubleshoot my problem?

Now type: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer Wait for the command to finish installing the driver, when done restart your computer. i get a message after the first command when installing has done saying not enough space so it aborts! what do i do to fix this

  First I would like agree one thing that this is fully for Ubuntu, not for BackTrack. However I'm posting my BackTrack question here since I find similar problems in backtrack forum are being unanswered and Linux/Unix site of StackExchange has very low attraction. I'm having USB wifi adapter (iBall Baton), having chipset RTL8191SU. It displays available wifi networks in Wicd manager. But while trying to connect it gives me bad password. When I'm trying to run airmon-ng it didn't returned me the monitor mode. I tried to replace with Ubuntu 12.10 drivers. But it totally nulled the device functionality. However I restored the drivers. I'm interested to compile drivers as if anyone indicate the methods. Awaiting ideas!

• Help setting up wireless in Ubuntu 13.04

  I'm having problems connecting my WIFI in Ubuntu 13.04 . So I was wondering if filling in the data manually ie: the IPv4, IPv6, the SSID and BSSID info etc. I did try this before but maybe I put in the wrong data or maybe not enough. Would that make it work? I just don't know how to find out some of the data you need to put in? I'm new and it's confusing. Does anyone know the solution?
