  • How to safely backport specific linux kernel commits to an older kernel using git

    - by superc0w
I'm currently on a stable 2.6.32 kernel. But I need certain fixes on 2.6.33 branch to be incorporated into this 2.6.32 kernel so that I can create a custom kernel for testing purposes. I can't apply the said fixes directly to the 2.6.32 source because they seem to have dependencies on other fixes. Is there any safe way to incorporate only the fixes (and all their dependencies) I need into the 2.6.32 kernel with git to create a custom kernel? Assuming there is a way to do the above, is there a way to track the fixes that have been applied to the custom kernel (i.e. track which commits have been applied to the 2.6.32 kernel to create the custom kernel source)?

  • Is removing unused functionality a bad thing?

    - by Andrew Grimm
Is it possible for YAGNI to apply in the past tense? You created some functionality, it was used a little bit a while ago, but you aren't using it any more, and you don't want to maintain it, so you'd rather delete it. Is getting rid of unused or rarely-used functionality neccessarily a bad thing? Background: I use source control, so if I need the functionality again, I can get it. I'm the only user of my software (I'm a bioinformatician analyzing a data set). One scenario where I came across this was that I was using inheritance, with a parent class, and two child classes. One was handling files generated by 454 sequencing (next-generation sequencing), and the other was handling files generated by Sanger sequencing (previous-generation sequencing). I was actively maintaining the latter, but not the former. Maybe my mistake was using inheritance rather than composition, but that's a slightly different story.

  • Serializing array in PHP, preventing injection

    - by Cyclone
I'm writing a PHP script which uses serialized arrays to store data. How can I prevent injection in serialization? It would be very easy to name your account: something";s:6:"access";s:5:"admin"; for a simple example. The user could then add the rest of the needed parameters somehow. Would addslashes work for this? Does the php unserialize pick up on that as being an escaped character? If so, is it possible to apply addslashes to an entire array without iterating through? Thanks for the help!

  • WPF calls not working during long method processing

    - by Colin Rouse
Hi, The following method does not apply the wpf changes (background = red) until the 2nd method (DoWork) exits: private void change() { Background = Brushes.Red; Dispatcher.BeginInvoke((Action) DoWork); } DoWork() takes several seconds to run and I don't really want to put it into a thread, as this code will be used in several places and will probably interact will the Dispatcher thread at various intervals. I've tried calling the Invalidate...() methods, but to no avail. The BeginInvoke() was added to see if the delay would allow the background change to be applied before the logic was called. Typically, the logic would be part of this method. Btw, most of the logic is performed on a different thread and shouldn't block the Dispatcher thread?! Can someone please help? Thanks

  • PHP: Strange behaviour while calling custom php functions

    - by baltusaj
    I am facing a strange behavior while coding in PHP with Flex. Let me explain the situation: I have two funcions lets say: populateTable() //puts some data in a table made with flex createXML() //creates an xml file which is used by Fusion Charts to create a chart Now, if i call populateTable() alone, the table gets populated with data but if i call it with createXML(), the table doesn't get populated but createXML() does it's work i.e. creates an xml file. Even if i run following code, only xml file gets generated but table remains empty whereas i called populateTable() before createXML(). Any idea what may be going wrong? MXML Part <mx:HTTPService id="userRequest" url="request.php" method="POST" resultFormat="e4x"> <mx:request xmlns=""> <getResult>send</getResult> </mx:request> and <mx:DataGrid id="dgUserRequest" dataProvider="{userRequest.lastResult.user}" x="28.5" y="36" width="525" height="250" > <mx:columns> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="No." dataField="no" /> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Name" dataField="name"/> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Age" dataField="age"/> </mx:columns> PHP Part <?php //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- function initialize($username,$password,$database) //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { # Connect to the database $link = mysql_connect("localhost", $username,$password); if (!$link) { die('Could not connected to the database : ' . mysql_error()); } # Select the database $db_selected = mysql_select_db($database, $link); if (!$db_selected) { die ('Could not select the DB : ' . mysql_error()); } // populateTable(); createXML(); # Close database connection } //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- populateTable() //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { if($_POST['getResult'] == 'send') { $Result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM session" ); $Return = "<Users>"; $no = 1; while ( $row = mysql_fetch_object( $Result ) ) { $Return .= "<user><no>".$no."</no><name>".$row->name."</name><age>".$row->age."</age><salary>". $row->salary."</salary></session>"; $no=$no+1; $Return .= "</Users>"; mysql_free_result( $Result ); print ($Return); } //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- createXML() //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { $users=array ( "0"=>array("",0), "1"=>array("Obama",0), "2"=>array("Zardari",0), "3"=>array("Imran Khan",0), "4"=>array("Ahmadenijad",0) ); $selectedUsers=array(1,4); //this means only obama and ahmadenijad are selected and the xml file will contain info related to them only //Extracting salaries of selected users $size=count($users); for($i = 0; $i<$size; $i++) { //initialize temp which will calculate total throughput for each protocol separately $salary = 0; $result = mysql_query("SELECT salary FROM userInfo where name='$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][0]'"); $row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) $salary = $row['salary']; } $users[$selectedUsers[$i]][1]=$salary; } //creating XML string $chartContent = "<chart caption=\"Users Vs Salaries\" formatNumberScale=\"0\" pieSliceDepth=\"30\" startingAngle=\"125\">"; for($i=0;$i<$size;$i++) { $chartContent .= "<set label=\"".$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][0]."\" value=\"".$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][1]."\"/>"; } $chartContent .= "<styles>" .   • Evaluate ContentControl without rendering to screen

    - by thedesertfox
    I have a datagrid and I'm writing a method to search through it to find some text. Practically all of my columns use a DataTemplateSelector, so in my search, I need to be able to take a DataTemplate, apply it to a ContentControl, and then find a TextBlock to get the text to see if it matches my search criteria. I'm trying the following but it's not seeming to produce any results. I also tried a FindName("layoutRoot" control) but that came back as null as well. var control = new ContentControl(); control.ContentTemplate = dataTemplate; control.Content = item; var txtBox = control.FindChildren<TextBlock>();

  • Should you remove all warnings in your Verilog or VHDL design? Why or why not?

    - by Brian Carlton
In (regular) software I have worked at companies where the gcc option -Wall is used to show all warnings. Then they need to be dealt with. With non-trivial FPGA/ASIC design in Verilog or VHDL there are often many many warnings. Should I worry about all of them? Do you have any specific techniques to suggest? My flow is mainly for FPGAs (Altera and Xilinx in particular), but I assume the same rules would apply to ASIC design, possibly more so due to the inability to change the design after it is built.

  • Constrain generic extension method to base types and string

    - by hitch
I want to have an extension method for XElement/XAttribute that allows me to apply a "ValueOrDefault" logic - perhaps with various slightly different implementations: ValueOrNull, ValueOrDefault, NumericValueOrDefault (which validates if the value is numeric), but I want to constrain these methods so that they can only work with ValueTypes or String (i.e. it does not really make sense to use any other reference types. Is it possible to do this with one implementation of each method, or will I have to have one where the constraint is "Structure" and one where the constraint is "String" - if I combine Structure and String in the generic constraint, I get the error : 'Structure' constraint and a specific class type constraint cannot be combined. An example of the current method implementation is as follows: <Extension()> _ Public Function ValueOrDefault(Of T As {Structure})(ByVal xe As XElement, ByVal defaultValue As T) As T If xe Is Nothing or xe.Value = "" Then Return defaultValue End If Return CType(Convert.ChangeType(xe.Value, GetType(T)), T) End Function

  • Clojure: Testing every value from map operation for truth

    - by Ralph
How can I test that every value in the collection returned by map is true? I am using the following: (defn test [f coll] (every? #(identity %) (map f coll))) with the anonymous function #(identity %), but I was wondering if there is a better way. I cannot use (apply and ...) because and is a macro. UPDATE: BTW, I am making my way through The Haskell Road to Logic, Maths, and Programming, by Kees Doets and Jan can Eijck, but doing the exercises in Clojure. It's a very interesting book.

  • How to convert a gi-normous integer (in string format) to hex format? (C#)

    - by eviljack
Given a potentially huge integer value (in c# string format), I want to be able to generate it's hex equivalent. Normal methods don't apply here as we are talking arbitrarily large numbers, 50 digits or more. The techniques I've seen which use a technique like this: // Store integer 182 int decValue = 182; // Convert integer 182 as a hex in a string variable string hexValue = decValue.ToString("X"); // Convert the hex string back to the number int decAgain = int.Parse(hexValue, System.Globalization.NumberStyles.HexNumber); won't work because the integer to convert is too large. For example I need to be able to convert a string like this: 843370923007003347112437570992242323 to it's hex equivalent. these don't work: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1139957/c-convert-int-to-hex-and-back-again http://stackoverflow.com/questions/74148/how-to-convert-numbers-between-hex-and-decimal-in-c

  • $_GET['page'] loading content incorrectly

    - by s32ialx
OK so here is my previous post PHP Templated Site w/ file_get_content links now i got that issue resolved BUT the problem is now that the content loads it displays UNDER the div i placed #CONTENT# inside so the styles are being ignored and it's posting #CONTENT# outside the divs at positions 0,0 any suggestions? Found out whats happening by using "View Source" seems that it's putting all of the #CONTENT#, content that's being loaded in front of the tag. Like this <doctype...> <div class="home"> blah blah </div> <head> <script src=""></script> </head> <body> <div class="header"></div> <div class="contents"> #CONTENT# < where content SHOULD load </div> <div class="footer"></div> </body> so anyone got a fix? OK so a better description I'll add relevant screen-shots Whats happening is /* file.class.php */ <?php $file = new file(); class file{ var $path = "templates/clean"; var $ext = "tpl"; function loadfile($filename){ return file_get_contents($this->path . • Storing i18n data in a database using XML

    - by TigrouMeow
Hello, I may have to store some i18n-ed data in my database using XML if I don't fight back. That's not my choice, but it's in the specifications I have to follow. We would have, by example, something like following in a 'Country' column: <lang='fr'>Etats-Unis</lang> <lang='en'>United States</lang> This would apply to many columns in the database. I don't think it's a good idea at all. I tend to think that a cell in a database should represent a single piece of data (better for look-up), and that the database should have two dimensions maximum and not 3 or more (one request more would be required per dimension / a dimension here would be equal to the number of XML attributes). My idea was to have a separate table for all the translations, with columns such as : ID / Language / Translation. However, I should admit that I'm really not sure what is the best way to store data in various languages in a DB... Thanks for your advices :)

  • Fluent NHibernate SchemaExport to SQLite not pluralizing Table Names

    - by weenet
I am using SQLite as my db during development, and I want to postpone actually creating a final database until my domains are fully mapped. So I have this in my Global.asax.cs file: private void InitializeNHibernateSession() { Configuration cfg = NHibernateSession.Init( webSessionStorage, new [] { Server.MapPath("~/bin/MyNamespace.Data.dll") }, new AutoPersistenceModelGenerator().Generate(), Server.MapPath("~/NHibernate.config")); if (ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["DbGen"] == "true") { var export = new SchemaExport(cfg); export.Execute(true, true, false, NHibernateSession.Current.Connection, File.CreateText(@"DDL.sql")); } } The AutoPersistenceModelGenerator hooks up the various conventions, including a TableNameConvention like so: public void Apply(FluentNHibernate.Conventions.Instances.IClassInstance instance) { instance.Table(Inflector.Net.Inflector.Pluralize(instance.EntityType.Name)); } This is working nicely execpt that the sqlite db generated does not have pluralized table names. Any idea what I'm missing? Thanks.

  • Is SEO knowledge important for web developers?

    - by splattne
Looking for some SEO (Search engine optimization) questions on Stackoverflow, I saw ambivalent reactions to these questions. Some were closed as "not programming related" or were downvoted, others were answered and got upvoted. It seems that many developers think SEO was something "dirty" or belonged in the realm of spam. IMHO designing for search engines and practising SEO techniques adds important value to the final product like, for example, a good user interface. Should SEO really be left to specialized non-programmers? Shouldn't web developers have profound SEO knowledge? Or is it okay to apply SEO as a post-development process?

  • How to debug CSS/Javascript hover issues

    - by Jason Creighton
I often find myself wanting to debug CSS layout issues that involve DOM changes caused by Javascript in reaction to a hover event or different CSS rules applying due to the :hover selector. Normally, I'd use Firebug to inspect the element that's giving me trouble and see what its CSS properties were, and where those properties come from. However, when hovering is involved, it becomes impossible, because as soon as you move your mouse down to the Firebug panel, the elements you're interested in are no longer hovered, the CSS rules that apply are different, and (in the case of JS hovers) the DOM is changed. Is there any way I can "freeze" the state of the DOM and application of :hover in order to inspect the DOM as it was during a hover event? Any other ideas on how to debug this sort of issue are welcome, of course.

  • Storing an image map in a database

    - by ColoradoRockie
I have a requirement to allow users in a content management system to create their own image maps through a gui interface, which I have accomplished. But instead of saving the image map to the page code, I want to save the image map code to a database (sql), which I've also accomplished. When I started down this road in my head I was thinking the whole time that I'd just add the "usemap" attribute at runtime shown below where promo1.ImageMap holds the entire map code: if(promo1.HasImageMap) imgPromotion1.Attributes.Add("usemap", promo1.ImageMap); I guess I didn't think it though well enough, because it seems that "usemap" only expects the name of the existing map to use from the page code, and not the map code as a string. Does anyone have any clever ideas on how to apply the map from the database to the image at run time?

  • Undo/Redo Support for Table Changes in WPF RichTextBox

    - by Jeff
As part of an editor project, I need to add functionality to the WPF RichTextBox control to allow the user to perform operations on a table. One of those operations is to apply a new width value to one or more columns of the table. I have a function that is applying a new Width value to the TableColumn objects in question, and the table is resizing itself nicely. However, I've noticed that the column-width change operation does not seem to be added to the undo stack. In other words, if a user types something, then changes a column width, then selects undo, the RichTextBox control undoes the user's typing. Undo and redo don't seem to be picking up the property change on the TableColumn object. Is there some way to make this operation occur in a way that it actually is undoable/redoable?

  • What things on a job listing should be avoided?

    - by Earlz
Hello, I'm looking at trying my hand at a bit of freelancing. And looking at some of the listings, I can tell some of them are definitely, obviously wrong. "A web application mimicking youtube. Project must be completed in 2 weeks. Flat payment of $200. If you are not willing to do things this fast paced then do not apply" But some of them are more subtle and they give me a red flag inside, but I'm not sure to avoid them. What are some things in job listings to avoid for freelance programming jobs? What is the reason for avoiding that?

  • Kill a Perl system call after a timeout

    - by Fergal
I've got a Perl script I'm using for running a file processing tool which is started using backticks. The problem is that occasionally the tool hangs and It needs to be killed in order for the rest of the files to be processed. Whats the best way best way to apply a timeout after which the parent script will kill the hung process? At the moment I'm using: foreach $file (@FILES) { $runResult = `mytool $file >> $file.log`; } But when mytool hangs after n seconds I'd like to be able to kill it and continue to the next file.

  • is it legal to use fontsquirrel.com to create a @font-face kit for a font I have been given?

    - by ongoingworlds
fontsquirrel.com allows you to upload a font and create a @font-face kit which you can apply to your website and use to display fonts which will display cross-browser (even in IE6!). But what I want to know is, is this legal? I've been supplied the font "Lubalin Graph Std" and told to use this for headers on the website I'm creating. I can upload the font file to fontsquirrel.com and use this to display headers in this font across the website - but I'm worried we'll get into trouble for doing this. What should I do?

  • IE6 HTML control wrapping

    - by astonius
Is there any way to prevent wrapping across controls in IE6? For example, I have a label and a single select box. The select box width is dynamic (depending on the content). I want the label to always be to the left of the select box. Right now the problem I am having is the select box drops below the label. I have tried using the <nobr> tag as well as CSS word-wrap rules, but because this isn't text the wrapping rules do not apply. The only way I have found for sure to make it work is to place them in a two-column table, but I do not like this solution. Is there any other way?

  • UML tool required for C#

    - by Peter Morris
I need some help - here are my requirements. 1: I should be able to modify the UML model without affecting the code, and then later apply the changes. This is because I need to print the changes, get them confirmed, and then develop them. 2: I should be able to reuse parts of the model. For example I would create one project which outputs A.dll assembly, and then another UML project would use the classes in the first to crate B.dll 3: Project stored as text so I can see changes in version control history. 4: Together is too expensive :-)

  • How to calculate real-time stats?

    - by Diego Jancic
I have a site with millions of users (well, actually it doesn't have any yet, but let's imagine), and I want to calculate some stats like "log-ins in the past hour". The problem is similar to the one described here: http://highscalability.com/blog/2008/4/19/how-to-build-a-real-time-analytics-system.html The simplest approach would be to do a select like this: select count(distinct user_id) from logs where date>='20120601 1200' and date <='20120601 1300' (of course other conditions could apply for the stats, like log-ins per country) Of course this would be really slow, mainly if it has millions (or even thousands) of rows, and I want to query this every time a page is displayed. How would you summarize the data? What should go to the (mem)cache? EDIT: I'm looking for a way to de-normalize the data, or to keep the cache up-to-date. For example I could increment an in-memory variable every time someone logs in, but that would help to know the total amount of logins, not the "logins in the last hour". Hope it's more clear now.
