• Vertically center CSS techniques don't work in Chrome

  I've gone through stackoverflow questions and a whole bunch of articles on vertically centering text like the following: http://blog.themeforest.net/tutorials/vertical-centering-with-css/ None of the techniques seem to work with the latest version of Chrome. Is that just the nature of Chrome? My text just always appears at the top. It seems that whenever I use 50% or 100% as values for CSS's height or top, nothing happens. I just need a single line of text vertically centered. line-height isn't helpful because I want it centered in the middle of the browser window... I don't know how tall the browser window is going to be. UPDATE: The problem is apparently Foundation 4. Once I delete the following everything works as expected: <link href="/assets/foundation_and_overrides.css?body=1" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" /> Any idea on how to make it work with Foundation 4?

I don't want to have to create separate classes / modules for step1, step2, etc. Is there a way that I can accomplish namespace functionality from inside a class?

• Performance problem loading lots of user controls

  My application is loading a bunch of the same user control into a ScrollPanel. The problem is, this is very slow. The profiler show that the method Application.LoadComponent(), which is called internally by in the designer code in the constructor of my user control, is the bottleneck. The documentation of this method says, that this method load XAML files. I alway though the compiler compiles XAML to BAML and embedds it into the assembly. So the question is, how can I use BAML instead of XAML? Is there another way to make loading my user controls faster?

  What are the performance issues associated with generating 100's of dynamic methods in Ruby? I've been interested in using the Ruby Preferences Gem and noticed that it generates a bunch of helper methods for each preference you set. For instance: class User < ActiveRecord::Base preference :hot_salsa end ...generates something like: user.prefers_hot_salsa? # => false user.prefers_hot_salsa # => false If there are 100's of preferences like this, how does this impact the application? I assume it's not really a big deal but I'm just wondering, theoretically.

• Total Size of NSMutableArray object

  Hi Folks, I've got an NSMutableArray that holds a bunch of objects, what I'm trying to figure out is how much memory is the array using. After looking at a couple of places I know about the sizeof call, and when I make it I get 32 bits (which is the size of the NSMutableArray object it self). Example code: NSMutableArray *temp = [[NSMutableArray alloc]init]; [temp addObject:objectxyz]; [temp addObject:objectabc]; [temp addObject:object123]; now I want to know the size :) Thanks, Sj

• frameworks for coding a php library?

  there are plenty of frameworks for coding MVC web applications. this time im going to code a library (think of Doctrine or Solr) with a bunch of class files. u just include a bootstrap or a class file and you are ready to use my classes. i have never tried to code a library before and intend to code one for learning purpose so that i can use various design patterns i have learned. are there any great frameworks for this, how i should organize the different class files, where i can put configuration files and so on? tutorials or other information would be great too. thanks

• BASH: Checking for environment variables

  Hi folks, I am trying to check the value of an environment variable and depending on the value do certain things and it works fine as long as the variable is set. When it isn't though I get a whole bunch of errors (as BASH is trying to compare the string I specify with an undefined variable, I guess) I tried implementing an extra check to prevent it happening but no luck.   I have a bunch of buttons named: button1 button2 button3 etc. Is there a way to basically do this? pseudocode for(int i = 1, i < 15, i++) { button{i}.selected = YES; } This also goes for method calls, etc. I've often thought such a way of calling methods would be very convenient, but I don't think I've ever seen it done when using compiled languages. But I have done it using PHP. Is there any way to do this in Objective-C? (That's where my problem is now, but I'd also be interested in if you can do this in other languages.) Alternately, is there a reason why this is NOT a good way to go about accessing all the UI elements? Thanks!

  Hi! I'm making an application where a web service fetches (amongst other) a bunch of codes from a webservice (I.e BEL, FRA, SWE). During runtime I want to translate these codes to their apporiate names to display to users (I.e Belgium, France, Sweden). There can be a lot of these codes, so i'm wondering if there is any approriate way to store the (code, name) entry as a some sort of map in the XML resources in Android, so I can quickly fetch the name by the given code? It's all about speed here, since the map can have a few hundred entries.

• CodeIgnitor is generating multiple sessions in the database, why?

  Ive got a site that does a few ajax calls on page load, now for some reason, codeIgnitor is inserting 4 sessions (I'm assuming for each ajax call) as you load the page. I'm storing the sessions in the database. I'm pretty sure there should only be one session per browser? FF seems to only generate one, other browsers seem to create a whole bunch of sessions. Multiple sessions for the same user are giving me some serious authentication problems. any ideas?

• MySQL command-line tool: How to find out number of rows affected by a DELETE?

  I'm trying to run a script that deletes a bunch of rows in a MySQL (innodb) table in batches, by executing the following in a loop: mysql --user=MyUser --password=MyPassword MyDatabase < SQL_FILE where SQL_FILE contains a DELETE FROM ... LIMIT X command. I need to keep running this loop until there's no more matching rows. But unlike running in the mysql shell, the above command does not return the number of rows affected. I've tried -v and -t but neither works. How can I find out how many rows the batch script affected? Thanks!

• ASP MVC ViewData from one view to another (Html.Encode())

  Hello all, I have a page with a bunch of labels and checkboxes on it. On this page, the labels need to be easily customizable after the project is deployed. So I made all of the labels in this style: Html.Encode(ViewData["lblText"]) And I added a button on the page called "Edit Button Labels" that will only be seen by admins. When that button is clicked, I would like to load another view that simply contains a table of two columns. One column needs to contain the current labels and the other should have text boxes for the user to enter new labels. Then, once any changes have been made, I need to permanently change the "lblText" for each label on the original page. I have tried passing viewdata and tempdata to the "Edit Button Labels" view using both return view() and return RedirectToAction() with no success. Am I missing something minor or is there a better way to do this?

  I have inherited a rails forum (Rails 2.3.2 I think) that alerts people of new posts/replies for the forums or threads they are watching. To make it easier for people to answer to threads I would like to enable reply-to-post, similar to basecamp and a bunch of other forums and tools out there. I would add a separator text (like "----add your reply above this line-----") in the original email. I need to: - process incoming email - extract the new text (above the separator line) - ideally strip out text like "on ... [email protected] wrote:" that is automatically added by some mail clients - identify the thread this email is referring to (either using the incoming address or the subject line) - identify the sender - post the content as new reply Any suggestions on how to get started? Currently i was wondering is there a legit government service that produce real time gas station price in the US on a daily basis? I heard about http://gasbuddy.com/ but i don't know where they get the data source from and was not sure if i should base on their data as well. On the other hand, there is a bunch of iphone apps on the apple store that show the gas price info. • Fast way to pass a simple java object from one thread to another

  I have a callback which receives an object. I make a copy of this object, and I must pass it on to another thread for further processing. It's very important for the callback to return as fast as possible. Ideally, the callback will write the copy to some sort of lock-free container. I only have the callback called from a single thread and one processing thread. I only need to pass a bunch of doubles to the other thread, and I know the maximum number of doubles (around 40). Any ideas? I'm not very familiar with Java, so I don't know the usual ways to pass stuff between threads.

  I have a table that stores a bunch of diagnosis for a single plan. When the users create a new plan I need to copy over all existing diagnosis's as well. I had thought to try the below but this is obviously not correct. I am guessing that I will need to loop through my oldDiagnosis part, but how? Thanks! • How to convert Beautiful Soup Unicode into a decimal value?

  I'm trying to Use python's Beautiful Soup Library to grab a bunch of divs from an html file, and from there get the string - which is a money value - that's inside the div. Then remove the dollar sign and convert it to a decimal so that I can use a greater than and less than conditional statement to compare values. I have googled the heck out of it and can't seem to come up with a way to convert this unicode string into a decimal value. I really could use some help here. How do I convert unicode into a decimal value? • Converting a stopwatch time to milliseconds (regex)

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to convert a string containing a time to an integer number of milliseconds. I'm using a suboptimal way using a bunch of preg_match()'s and some array handling, but I was wondering if there was an elegant way. Here are some example stopwatch times (some wouldn't actually be seen on a stopwatch but need to be converted anyway): 3:34:05.81 34:05 5 (just 5 seconds) 89 (89 seconds) 76:05 (76 minutes, 5 seconds) Millseconds will not extend past 2 decimal places. You can give me an example using either PHP or Javascript regex functions. Thanks!

  I'm currently migrating an application from Linq-to-SQL & ASP.net Web Services (asmx) to Entity Framework and WCF. My question is, I have a bunch of POCO classes which i have xml mapping files for (for the linq to sql) I've replaced my linq to sql with an entity framework data model I've got an interface - something like IService - that has all the methods on it that i need my service to implement - for example: Product[] GetProductsByKeyword(string keyword); In the above case, Product is a POCO. I now have them as entities within my ef data model - i'm using .net 4, and could take advantage of poco support, but don't really see the need - This service is strictly read only. What's the best way of returning entities in my WCF service? I want it to support other client platforms, not just .net (so php guys could use it)

  Some pseudocode from a typical web app: String a = "A bunch of text"; //UTF-16 saveTextInDb(a); //Write to Oracle VARCHAR(15) column String b = readTextFromDb(); //UTF-16 out.write(b); //Write to http response In the first line we create a Java String which uses UTF-16. When you save to Oracle VARCHAR(15) does Oracle also store this as UTF-16? Does the length of an Oracle VARCHAR refer to number of Unicode characters (and not number of bytes)? And then when we write b to the ServletResponse is this being written as UTF-16 or are we by default converting to another encoding like UTF-8?

• Eclipse organization: workspaces, working sets, projects, folders, multiple source folders, ....!!!

  There is quite a tier of organization in Eclipse. You can have multiple workspaces, each of which can have projects, these projects can be assigned to working sets, and then each project can have source folders... How do you use all this organization? Do you even use it all? Working sets are so hidden that I hardly know what they are; are they commonly used, or are they hidden because they are so uncommonly used? What is even the methodology behind all this? I'd like a good explanation of the recommended way to use all these different organizational layers, because at the moment I basically just have a bunch of random projects in a single workspace (the default %USER%/workspace folder) and it's getting to be quite an alphabetical mess. So in essence: How do you keep your Eclipse workspace(s) organized?

• Is there a way to show a 3-D surface plot in the browser?

  I've got a bunch of data for 3-D surface plots. I want to build a quick web interface to let me browse through that data. Are there any (free) packages out there that can easily show surface plots? I found this question but the suggested libraries did not support surface plots. If it requires a plugin like flash / java that is fine. This is for prototyping so a quick 'n dirty solution is preferred. Right now, the only option I have come up with is to use gnuplot to serve up static images. It would be awesome if there was some way to provide an interactive 3-D surface plot in the browser.

  I have seen mention of a bunch of external JSF Libraries such as ICEfaces, Richfaces, etc. However, I am unsure as to what these libraries actually add over just using JSF 2.0. Are they just additional components that are pre-built? I know that PrettyFaces adds URL rewriting, and I Believe that ICEFaces/Richfaces add Ajax enabled components? What are some other major component libraries, what are their benefits / why should people use them? Additionally, what does a framework like SEAM add over using straight JSF2 with EJB? Is MYFaces simply a different implementation of JSF?

• Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

  I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?
