  • Stopping cookies being set from a domain (aka "cookieless domain") to increase site performance

    I was reading in Google's documentation about improving site speed. One of their recommendations is serving static content (images, css, js, etc.) from a "cookieless domain": Static content, such as images, JS and CSS files, don't need to be accompanied by cookies, as there is no user interaction with these resources. You can decrease request latency by serving static resources from a domain that doesn't serve cookies. Google then says that the best way to do this is to buy a new domain and set it to point to your current one: To reserve a cookieless domain for serving static content, register a new domain name and configure your DNS database with a CNAME record that points the new domain to your existing domain A record. Configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain. In your web pages, reference the domain name in the URLs for the static resources. This is pretty straight forward stuff, except for the bit where it says to "configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain". From what I've read, there's no setting in IIS that allows you to say "serve static resources", so how do I prevent ASP.NET from setting cookies on this new domain? At present, even if I'm just requesting a .jpg from the new domain, it sets a cookie on my browser, even though our application's cookies are set to our old domain. For example, ASP.NET sets an ".ASPXANONYMOUS" cookie that (as far as I'm aware) we're not telling it to do. Apologies if this is a real newb question, I'm new at this! Thanks.

The second problem lies in the failFrom variable: function failwhale(levelNum) { _root.gotoAndStop("fail"); failFrom = levelNum; } How do I make failFrom a "global" variable in that it can be accessed anywhere (from actionscript in frames and even movieclips)...Right now, when I try to trace failFrom in a different frame, it is "undefined".

  • How many pages can i add to a new website without going to the google sandbox ?

    Hello there, I'm about to open a new website wich have 15.000 pages (ecommerce store). Of course, i will not publish all this pages at the same time, but i'm looking for infos on how much pages should i start with without going to the sandbox. For example, could i start with a 50 pages website or is it too much ? Then, have you an idea (i know there's no precises rules here) what's the frenquency / volume of pages i could add later ?   • jQuery ajax form submit - how to ensure dynamically loaded form's action is used

    Hi, i'm having a problem with dynamically loaded forms - instead of using the action attribute of the newly loaded form, my jquery code is still using the action attribute of the first form loaded. I have the following code: //generic ajax form handler - calls next page load on success $('input.next:not(#eligibility)').live("click", function(){ $(".form_container form").validationEngine({ ajaxSubmit: true, ajaxSubmitFile: $(this).attr('action'), success : function() { var url = $('input.next').attr('rel'); ajaxFormStage(url); }, failure : function() { } }); }); But when the next form is loaded, the above code does not pick up the new action attribute. I have tried adding the above code to my callback on successful ajax load (shown below), but this doesn't make any difference. Can anyone help?     Hello, I am interested in building a Timer Based game such as mafia wars or soemthing like that. I'm stuck on one question. What would be the best way to retain a timer, even if the app is closed? Should I do this based on the Device Clock? or should I set a time to a server, and get the time when the device starts up?   • Deploying patches and new versions.

    I'm deveoping a big project, I have the dev folder (connected to a specific subdomain) then the "real" folder, the live one. When I'm ready to push patches or whole new versions I'm currently copying the files individually, is there a program that can help me do this task? Keep in mind that some files (the config one and the htacess) must never change in the live version. Thank you

  • What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

    I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens? What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server.

  • Problem: connecting to drupal on hostgator without pointed domain.

    I need to connect to drupal on a website that I'm programming on a hostgator account. The website that I'm working on currently receives a lot of traffic, and I would like to make sure that it is fully functional before I launch the new website. The old website was programmed with .asp which hostgator doesn't support, and the old webhost doesn't support drupal or .php which are integral to the new web design. Drupal 6 has been freshly installed on my website, but when I try to login, it redirects me to http://gator83.hostgator.com/?q=node&destination=node instead of the drupal control panel. Is it possible to work around this? Thank you in advance.

    I have an adapter and i want to add a string to it but when i run this code it only add the last string in the songstoadd variable ... That is a custom adapter which adds dividers in where neccessary but in the Array Adapter i want to a all of the strings that have the same first letter in their name ....     Hey all, I was hoping someone can answer this question for me. I am trying to display wall posts, photos and videos for a certain user for example http://www.facebook.com/sony. I can see the wall posts, photos and videos without signing up for Facebook. Do I need to use the facebook connect API to access the photos and and videos for sony so that I can display them in my iPhone application? I need to display the wall posts as a table view and the images and videos as a gallery very much like how the facebook app displays it. Any help or a API specific page would be appreciated.   • Integrate OpenId into an existing site

    I have a working web application which already has a login and registration system. I'm looking for some advice on how to do it. Until now, users have a username, an email, a password and some optional fields. The registrartion is the usual process with email confirmation. Now I'd like to allow users to use OpenId. So I have added an openid field to the table. There are two different login forms, and users which are already registered can add their openid info and use either login form. The problem is with new users who come on the site for the first time and try to login with OpenId. I create a new user for them, and I don't need a password, but still I need at least a username, which is used on the site (I'm not sure if the email is needed). So my problems are: 1) How do I manage validation? Some fields are required for some users, (e.g. a password) but not for some others. I mean, I can do this, but it immediately gets messy. 2) Should I ask for a username and email on the first OpenId login? On the one hand I'd say yes, but I fear this vanishes the advantages of using OpenId, that is, not having to provide details. 3) I could get the details via SReg or AttributeExchange, but most providers have a bad support for those. For instance my Gmail OpenId account does not tell the email (!). Is there some place to learn more about the current support for these extensions?

I try to touch my database as least times as possible.

  • Would you take a paycut [closed]

    I make 90K doing JEE5 (it is open I can use any tech I want which is nice) but don't like what I am doing to because it is too hw related. I have an offer for 88K and a bonus that would be 10% (almost assured) that I would guess would be paid in the 4th quarter. It is a j2ee, supposed to be moving to jee5 and there are no hw dependencies (banking type work). I think I would be interested, but I have always been told you do not take a pay cut and don't move laterally (go to another job at the same pay). I have been on other interviews but this is the only one that has panned out. Also with the current job there is 401k match, but with the new one there is 401k also and a pension. What would you do?

    Primarily this seems to be a technique used by games, where they have all the sounds in one file, textures in another etc. With these files commonly reaching the GB size. What is the reason behind doing this over maintaining it all in subdirectories as small files - one per texture which many small games use this, with the monolithic system being favoured by larger companies? Is there some file system overhead with lots of small files? Are they trying to protect their property - although most just seem to be a compressed file with a new extension?

  • How to "push" updates to individual cells in a (ASP.NET) web page table/grid?

    I'm building something similar to a price comparison site. This will be developed in ASP.NET/WebForms/C#/.NET 3.5. The site will be used by the public, so I have no control over the client side - and the application isn't so central to their lives that they'll go out of their way to make it work. I want to have a table/grid that displays products in rows, vendors in columns, and prices in the cells. Price updates will be arriving (at the server) continuously, and I'd like to "push" any updates to the clients' browsers - ideally only updating what has changed. So, if Vendor A changes their price on Product B, I'd want to immediately update the relevant cell in all the browsers that are viewing this information. I don't want to use any browser plug-ins (e.g. Silverlight). Javascript is fine. What's the best approach to take? Presumably my options are: 1) have the client page continuously poll the server for updates, locate the correct cell and update it; or 2) have the server be able to send updates to all the open browser pages which are listening for these updates. The first one would seem the most plausible, but I don't want to constrain the assembled wisdom of the SO community. I'm happy to purchase any third party components (e.g. a grid) that might help with this. I already have the DevExpress grid/ajax components if they provide anything useful.

  • Do you think the AI industry will ever come back?

    I just spent some time reading about the collapse of the AI industry and realized a lot of the reason it failed was because technology was slow to catch up with their theories on when it would be available. I also read that it is believed computers that will be able to emulate human synapses may be made round 2015-2025. It's 2010 now and were getting pretty close to that time frame. I was wondering if anyone thinks that the AI industry will return as the technology lands? And if so, will it change the language market? Could Lisp like languages suddenly experience a burst of growth if it does? Idk I just thought it was interesting thinking about it.
