  Recently I was working with a code to open a PowerPoint presentation (by vb.net) object and process each slide by slide. If processing slide is not null or a master slide I need to skip and go to the next one. Can anyone show me how to check whether a given slide is a master slide? Is there any way to check it by slide type? • How to hide a Mono application on the OSX Dock

  I have a Mono application that should not show on the dock, but will occasionally show a window. I want neither menu bar nor dock icon to show for this application. I have my application wrapped in an app bundle, and my info.plist file has the LSUIElement set to "1". This does not seem to be hiding my application from the Dock. I have tried also calling osascript with the following info in a Process.Start: osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to set visible of process "myapp" to false' This returns a System Event error code: -10006. Thus far, I've had no luck finding out what that means. I've also tried all the standard Hide() and Visibility = false stuff inside Mono. Anyone found a workaround for this, or have an idea a direction I can look in? For the most part, working in Mono has been straightforward .Net coding, but this has me stumped.

  I have some messages in my queue. Now I notice that after 3 tries the service host faults. Is this a normal behavior? Where does the 3 times comes from? I thought it came from receiveRetryCount. But I set that one to 1. I got 20 messages in my queue waiting to be processed. The WCF operation that is responsible to process the message supports transaction so if it can't process the message it will throw so that the message stays in the queue. I didn't think that it would of Fault the ServiceHost after a number of retry, is this part documented somewhere? I'm running MSMQ service on my winxp machine. I'm more interested in documentation indicating that the service host will fault after a number of retry. Is this part true?

• How do I synchronize access to shared memory in LynxOS/POSIX?

  I am implementing two processes on a LynxOS SE (POSIX conformant) system that will communicate via shared memory. One process will act as a "producer" and the other a "consumer". In a multi-threaded system my approach to this would be to use a mutex and condvar (condition variable) pair, with the consumer waiting on the condvar (with pthread_cond_wait) and the producer signalling it (with pthread_cond_signal) when the shared memory is updated. How do I achieve this in a multi-process, rather than multi-threaded, architecture? Is there a LynxOS/POSIX way to create a condvar/mutex pair that can be used between processes? Or is some other synchronization mechanism more appropriate in this scenario?

• Multiple Socket Connections

  I need to write a server which accepts connections from multiple client machines, maintains track of connected clients and sends individual clients data as necessary. Sometimes, all clients may be contacted at once with the same message, other times, it may be one individual client or a group of clients. Since I need confirmation that the clients received the information and don't want to build an ACK structure for a UDP connection, I decided to use a TCP streaming method. However, I've been struggling to understand how to maintain multiple connections and keep them idle. I seem to have three options. Use a fork for each incoming connection to create a separate child process, use pthread_create to create an entire new thread for each process, or use select() to wait on all open socket IDs for a connection. Recommendations as to how to attack this? I've begun working with pthreads but since performance will likely not be an issue, multicore processing is not necessary and perhaps there is a simpler way.

  I need to make a Java component that turns the background a certain colour when a process passed, and another colour when the process failed. My first thought was: green for success, red for failure. But then I read that 10% of males can't differentiate between these two colours. What would be a better combination of colours? (For the nitpickers: yes, I know that colour alone doesn't suffice, that text, shape, and noise can also be used. Nevertheless I am asking about the appropriate use of colour.)

If I do it like this, though this isn't the default browser Dim trgt1 As String = "http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=612471" pi.Arguments = trgt1 pi.FileName = "iexplore.exe" 'or firefox.exe System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(pi) it opens immediately. Is this a bug or a feature? I have tried this with both IE and FireFox set to be the default browser.

  One of the most common questions I receive is if there any tool available to generate load on SQL Server. Absolutely there is a fabulous free tool available to generate load on SQL Server on Codeplex. This tool was released in 2008 but it is still extremely relevant to generate the load on SQL Server as well works fabulously. CodePlex is a project initiated by Microsoft for hosting open source softwares. The best part of this SQL Server Load Generator is that users can run multiple simultaneous queries again SQL Server using different login account and different application name. The interface of the tool is extremely easy to use and very intuitive as well. One of the things which I felt needed improvement was a default configuration. As every single time when I was adding a query the default settings were showing up and I had to manually change that. However, when I went to Menu >> Tools >>Options I was really happy as it has options to change every single default which is available. Here one can give default username, password, database name as well various settings related to configuration. Additionally application logging is also possible through the options. A couple of other important points I noticed was the button to reset counters as well status bar containing useful information of Total Threads, Completed Queries and Failed Queries.   I want to write a Firefox extension that acts exactly like the built-in RSS feed scanner (as an exercise). It should do the following: On each new page / tab load, it should scan the content of the page for RSS feeds If there are RSS feeds in the page, it should put a button in the location bar that the user can click On clicking the button, a speech bubble should appear under the button (the way a speech bubble appears under the bookmarks star when you click on it), with information on the feeds and buttons to subscribe to them So my main questions are: What is the process to run specific content scripts for specific pages? What is the process to use the results of those scripts to update the speech bubble for each location bar button for each tab? Basically, I'm trying to figure out how to do in Firefox what Page Actions are in Google Chrome. Please help! :)

• PHP - Processing Invalid XML

  I'm using SimpleXML to load in some xml files (which I didn't write/provide and can't really change the format of). Occasionally (eg one or two files out of every 50 or so) they don't escape any special characters (mostly &, but sometimes other random invalid things too). This creates and issue because SimpleXML with php just fails, and I don't really know of any good way to handle parsing invalid XML. My first idea was to preprocess the XML as a string and put ALL fields in as CDATA so it would work, but for some ungodly reason the XML I need to process puts all of its data in the attribute fields. Thus I can't use the CDATA idea. An example of the XML being: <Author v="By Someone & Someone" /> Whats the best way to process this to replace all the invalid characters from the XML before I load it in with SimpleXML?

• ProcessCmdKey - wait for KeyUp?

  Hi, I'm having the following issue in a WinForms app. I'm trying to implement Hotkeys and I need to process Key messages whenever the control is active, no matter if the focus is on a textbox within that control, etc. Overriding ProcessCmdKey works beautifully for this and does exactly what I want with one exception: If a user presses a key and keeps it pressed, ProcessCmdKey keeps triggering WM_KEYDOWN events. However, what I want to achieve is that the user has to release the button again before another hotkey action would trigger (so, if someone sits on the keyboard it would not cause continuous hotkey events). However, I can't find where to catch WM_KEYUP events, so I can set a flag if it should process ProcessCmdKey messages again? Anyone can help out here? Thanks, Tom

I want to achieve a functionality where all these clients that i accept can read data from the BufferedReader object that i mentioned above.(so that they can multiplex the data) How do i make these individual client threads read the data from BuffereReader single object?   hi. creating a distributed crawling python app. it consists of a master server, and associated client apps that will run on client servers. the purpose of the client app is to run across a targeted site, to extract specific data. the clients need to go "deep" within the site, behind multiple levels of forms, so each client is specifically geared towards a given site. each client app looks something like main: parse initial url call function level1 (data1) function level1 (data) parse the url, for data1 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level2 (data) function level2 (data2) parse the url, for data2 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level3 function level3 (dat3) parse the url, for data3 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level4 function level4 (data) parse the url, for data4 use the required xpath to get the dom elements at the final function.. --all the data output, and eventually returned to the server --at this point the data has elements from each function... my question: given that the number of calls that is made to the child function by the current function varies, i'm trying to figure out the best approach. each function essentialy fetches a page of content, and then parses the page using a number of different XPath expressions, combined with different regex expressions depending on the site/page. if i run a client on a single box, as a sequential process, it'll take awhile, but the load on the box is rather small. i've thought of attempting to implement the child functions as threads from the current function, but that could be a nightmare, as well as quickly bring the "box" to its knees! i've thought of breaking the app up in a manner that would allow the master to essentially pass packets to the client boxes, in a way to allow each client/function to be run directly from the master. this process requires a bit of rewrite, but it has a number of advantages. a bunch of redundancy, and speed. it would detect if a section of the process was crashing and restart from that point. but not sure if it would be any faster... i'm writing the parsing scripts in python.. so... any thoughts/comments would be appreciated... i can get into a great deal more detail, but didn't want to bore anyone!! thanks! tom

• Linux ext3 readdir and concurrent updates

  Dear all, we are receiving about 10000 messages per hour. We store them as individual files in hourly directories on an ext3 filesystem. The file name includes a sequence number. We use rsync to mirror these files every 20 seconds at another location (via a SAN, but that doesn't matter). Sometimes an rsync run picks up files n-3, n-2, n-1, n+1, and then next rsync run continues with n, n+2, n+3, n+4 and so on. Is it possible that when one process creates files in a certain sequence within a directory, that another process using readdir() sees the files appearing in a different sequence? • Database on the fly with scripting languages

  I have a set of .csv files that I want to process. It would be far easier to process it with SQL queries. I wonder if there is some way to load a .csv file and use SQL language to look into it with a scripting language like python or ruby. Loading it with something similar to ActiveRecord would be awesome. The problem is that I don't want to have to run a database somewhere prior to running my script. I souldn't have additionnal installations needed outside of the scripting language and some modules. My question is which language and what modules should I use for this task. I looked around and can't find anything that suits my need. Is it even possible?

• What happens when you run out of ram with mlockall set?

  I am working on a C++ application that requires a large amounts of memory for a batch run. ( 20gb) Some of my customers are running into memory limits where sometimes the OS starts swapping and the total run time doubles or worse. I have read that I can use the mlockall to keep the process from being swapped out. What would happen when the process memory requirements approaches or exceeds the the available physical memory in this way? I guess the answer might be OS specific so please list the OS in your answer.

• Microsoft Detours

  I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?

• How can I use Code Contracts in a C++/CLI project?

  I recently stumbled upon Code Contracts and have started using them in my C# projects. However, I also have a number of projects written in C++/CLI. For C# and VB, Code Contracts offer a handy configuration panel in the project properties dialog. For a C++/CLI project, there is no such panel. From the documentation, I got the impression that adding Code Contracts support to a C++/CLI project should be a simple matter of calling some external tools as part of the build process (namely ccrefgen.exe, cccheck.exe, and ccrewrite.exe). However, the number of command line options and restrictions concerning the call sequence have me somewhat intimidated. Can anybody point me to a simple way to run the Code Contracts tools as an automated part of the build process in Visual Studio?
