  It's a short week here with the US Thanksgiving Holiday. So, before we put on our stretch pants and get ready to belly up to the dinner table for turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, let's spend a little time this week talking about the Cloud (kind of like the feathery whipped goodness that tops the infamous Thanksgiving pumpkin pie!) • Silverlight Binding with multiple collections

  We're designing some sport specific applications. In one of our views we have a gridview that is bound to an observable collection of Teams. This is pretty straight forward in terms of getting Teams bound to the GridView. <telerik:RadGridView Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="0" x:Name="UsersGrid" ItemsSource="{Binding TeamResults}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedTeam, Mode=TwoWay}"> <telerik:RadGridView.Columns> <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Name/Group" DataMemberBinding="{Binding TeamName}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> </telerik:RadGridView.Columns> </telerik:RadGridView> We use the observable collection of teams as our items source and then bind the property of TeamName to the first column. You can set the binding to mode=TwoWay, we use a dialog where we edit the selected item, so our binding here is not set to two way. The issue comes when we want to bind to a property that has another collection in it. To continue on our code from above, we have an observable collection of teams, within that collection we have a collection of KeyPeople. We get this collection using RIA Serivces with the code below. return _TeamsRepository.All().Include("KeyPerson"); Here we are getting all the teams and also including the KeyPerson entity. So when we are done with our Load we will end up with an observable collection of Teams with a navigation property / entity of KeyPerson. Within this KeyPerson entity is a list of people associated with that particular team. We want to display the head coach from this list of KeyPersons. This list currently has a list of ten or more people that are bound to this team, but we just want to display the Head Coach in the column next to team name. The issue becomes how do we bind to this included entity? I have found about three different ways to solve this issue. The way that seemed to fit us best is to utilize the features within RIA Services. We can create client side properties that will do the work for us. We will create in the client side library a partial class of Team. We will end up in our library a file that is Team.shared.cs. The code below is what we will put into our partial team class. public KeyPerson Coach        {            get            {                if (this.KeyPerson != null && this.KeyPerson.Any())                { return this.KeyPerson.Where(x => x.RelationshipType == “HeadCoach”).FirstOrDefault(); }                 return null;            }        } We will return just the person that is the Head Coach and then be able to bind that and any other additional properties that we need. <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Coach" DataMemberBinding="{Binding Coach.Name}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> There are other ways that we could have solved this issue but we felt that creating a partial class through RIA Services best suited our needs.

• I created a custom (WPF) DataGridBoundColumn and get unexpected behaviour, what am I missing?

  Hi, I am using a DataGrid (from Microsoft.Windows.Controls.DataGrid) to display items on and on this DataGrid I use a custom Column which extends DataGridBoundColumn. I have bound an ObservableCollection to the ItemSource of the DataGrid. Conversation is one of my own custom datatypes which a (among other things) has a boolean called active. I bound this boolean to the DataGrid as follows: DataGridActiveImageColumn test = new DataGridActiveImageColumn(); test.Header = "Active"; Binding binding1 = new Binding("Active"); test.Binding = binding1; ConversationsDataGrid.Columns.Add(test); My custom DataGridBoundColumn DataGridActiveImageColumn overrides the GenerateElement method to let it return an Image depending on whether the conversation it is called for is active or not. However: When there are more entries on the DataGrid then fit at any one time (and vertical scrollbars are added) the behavior with respect to the column for all the conversations is strange. The conversations that are initially loaded are correct, but when I use the scrollbar of the DataGrid conversations that enter the view seems to have a random status (although more inactive than active ones, which corresponds to the actual ratio). When I scroll back up, the active images of the Conversations initially shown (before scrolling) are not correct anymore as well. When I replace my custom DataGridBoundColumn class with (for instance) DataGridCheckBoxColumn it works as intended so my extension of the DataGridBoundColumn class must be incomplete. Personally I think it has something to do with the following: From the MSDN page on the GenerateElement method (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.controls.datagridcolumn.generateelement%28VS.95%29.aspx): Return Value Type: System.Windows. FrameworkElement A new, read-only element that is bound to the column's Binding property value. I do return a new element (the image) but it is not bound to anything. I am not quite sure what I should do. Should I bind the Image to something? To what exactly? And why? (I have been experimenting, but was unsuccessful thus far, hence this post) Thanks in advance.

• Error Handling in T-SQL Scalar Function

  Ok.. this question could easily take multiple paths, so I will hit the more specific path first. While working with SQL Server 2005, I'm trying to create a scalar funtion that acts as a 'TryCast' from varchar to int. Where I encounter a problem is when I add a TRY block in the function; CREATE FUNCTION u_TryCastInt ( @Value as VARCHAR(MAX) ) RETURNS Int AS BEGIN DECLARE @Output AS Int BEGIN TRY SET @Output = CONVERT(Int, @Value) END TRY BEGIN CATCH SET @Output = 0 END CATCH RETURN @Output END Turns out theres all sorts of things wrong with this statement including "Invalid use of side-effecting or time-dependent operator in 'BEGIN TRY' within a function" and "Invalid use of side-effecting or time-dependent operator in 'END TRY' within a function". I can't seem to find any examples of using try statements within a scalar function, which got me thinking, is error handling in a function is possible? The goal here is to make a robust version of the Convert or Cast functions to allow a SELECT statement carry through depsite conversion errors. For example, take the following; CREATE TABLE tblTest ( f1 VARCHAR(50) ) GO INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('1') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('2') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('3') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('f') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('5') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('1.1') SELECT CONVERT(int,f1) AS f1_num FROM tblTest DROP TABLE tblTest It never reaches point of dropping the table because the execution gets hung on trying to convert 'f' to an integer. I want to be able to do something like this; SELECT u_TryCastInt(f1) AS f1_num FROM tblTest fi_num __________ 1 2 3 0 5 0 Any thoughts on this? Is there anything that exists that handles this? Also, I would like to try and expand the conversation to support SQL Server 2000 since Try blocks are not an option in that scenario. Thanks in advance.

• Sharepoint/WSS Reporting Services Integration woes

  after a number of failed attempts i seem to have successfully installed the Reporting services add-in to my WSS farm. However, I seem to be missing most of the enhanced functionality eg no report library template, no report center site template. the only additional functionality available is the report viewer web part. background: 2 server WSS 3.0 farm with CA (Central admin) WFE (web front end) and reporting services addin installed on 1, and SQL05 SP2 with Reporting services (RS) and all databases installed on other. I have a VM environment set up and have rolled this back and repeated a number of times. I have configured RS within CA and activated 'Report Server INtegration Feature'. Within the 'site settings' I have a 'Reporting Services' heading with a 'manage shared schedules' item/link, not sure if there should be other options? I was of the understanding that to view reports within sharepoint i could either create a new site using the 'report center' template or add a report library to an existing site, neither of which seems available I am at a loss as to what to do, as all online information seems to do with dealing with installation issues/errors, which i seem to have eventually got past

• Logging in worker threads spawned from a pylons application does not seem to work

  I have a pylons application where, under certain cirumstances I want to spawn multiple worker threads to process items in a queue. Right now we aren't making use of a ThreadPool (would be ideal, but we'll add that in later). The main problem is that the worker threads logging does not get written to the log files. When I run the code outside of the pylons application the logging works fine. So I think its something to do with the pylons log handler but not sure what. • Where are the factory_girl records?

  I'm trying to perform an integration test via Watir and RSpec. So, I created a test file within /integration and wrote a test, which adds a test user into a base via factory_girl. The problem is — I can't actually perform a login with my test user. The test I wrote looks as following: ... before(:each) @user = Factory(:user) @browser = FireWatir::Firefox.new end it "should login" @browser.text_field(:id, "username").set(@user.username) @browser.text_field(:id, "password").set(@user.password) @browser.button(:id, "get_in").click end ... As I'm starting the test and see a "performance" in browser, it always fires up a Username is not valid error. I've started an investigation, and did a small trick. First of all I've started to have doubts if the factory actually creates the user in DB. So after the immediate call to factory I've put some puts User.find stuff only to discover that the user is actually in DB. Ok, but as user still couldn't have logged in I've decided to see if he's present in DB with my own eyes. I've added a sleep right after a factory call, and went to see what's in the DB at the moment. I was crushed to see that the user is actually missing there! How come? Still, when I'm trying to output a user within the code, he is actually being fetched from somewhere. So where does the records, made by factory_girl within a runtime lie? Is it test or dev DB? I don't get it. I've 10 times checked if I'm running my Mongrel in test mode (does it matter? I think it does, as I'm trying to tun an integration test) and if my database.yml holds the correct connection specific data. I'm using an authlogic, if that can give any clue (no, putting activate_authlogic doesn't work here).

• sudo port install arm-elf-gcc3 fails with "No defined site for tag: gcc…"

  Am trying to get the ARM plugin for Eclipse (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuarmeclipse/) going on iMac i7, OS 10.6.3, Xcode 3.2.2 (don't want to upgrade during my project). The plugin needs (IIRC) arm-elf-gcc3, which needs darwinports for "easy" install. Of course, probably due to leftovers when I moved from old MacBook to iMac, Darwin ports 1.8.2 wouldn't install till I built 1.7.1 from source and installed it. darwinports 1.8.1 appears to have been properly installed, but sudo port install arm-elf-gcc3 led to 5-10 minutes of dependencies installs, then the following, produced with port -d (starting from last dependency completion for brevity): DEBUG: Found Dependency: receipt exists for gettext DEBUG: Executing org.macports.main (arm-elf-gcc3) --- Fetching arm-elf-gcc3 DEBUG: Executing org.macports.fetch (arm-elf-gcc3) --- gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2 doesn't seem to exist in /opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/gcc Error: No defined site for tag: gcc, using master_sites Error: Target org.macports.fetch returned: can't read "host": no such variable DEBUG: Backtrace: can't read "host": no such variable while executing "info exists seen($host)" (procedure "sortsites" line 25) invoked from within "sortsites fetch_urls" (procedure "portfetch::fetchfiles" line 49) invoked from within "portfetch::fetchfiles" (procedure "portfetch::fetch_main" line 16) invoked from within "$procedure $targetname" Warning: the following items did not execute (for arm-elf-gcc3): org.macports.activate org.macports.fetch org.macports.extract org.macports.checksum org.macports.patch org.macports.configure org.macports.build org.macports.destroot org.macports.install Error: Status 1 encountered during processing. • Why is the UpdatePanel Response size changing on alternate requests?

  We are using UpdatePanel in a small portion of a large page and have noticed a performance problem where IE7 becomes CPU bound and the control within the UpdatePanel takes a long time (upwards of 30 seconds) to render. We also noticed that Firefox does not seem to suffer from these delays. We ran both Fiddler (for IE) and Firebug (for Firefox) and noticed that the real problem lied with the amount of data being returned in update panel responses. Within the UpdatePanel control there is a table that contains a number of ListBox controls. The real problem is that EVERY OTHER TIME the response (from making ListBox selections) alternates from 30K to 430K. Firefox handles the 400+K response in a reasonable amount of time. For whatever reason, IE7 goes CPU bound while it is presumably processing this data. So irrespective of whether or not we should be using an UpdatePanel or not, we'd like to figure out why every other async postback response is larger by a factor of more than 10 than the previous one. When the response is in the 30K range, IE updates the display within a second. On the alternate times, the response time is well over 10 times longer. Any idea why this alternating behavior should be happening with an UpdatePanel?

• Code Golf: Leibniz formula for Pi

  I recently posted one of my favourite interview whiteboard coding questions in "What's your more controversial programming opinion", which is to write a function that computes Pi using the Leibniz formula. It can be approached in a number of different ways, and the exit condition takes a bit of thought, so I thought it might make an interesting code golf question. Shortest code wins! Given that Pi can be estimated using the function 4 * (1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...) with more terms giving greater accuracy, write a function that calculates Pi to within 0.00001. Edit: 3 Jan 2008 As suggested in the comments I changed the exit condition to be within 0.00001 as that's what I really meant (an accuracy 5 decimal places is much harder due to rounding and so I wouldn't want to ask that in an interview, whereas within 0.00001 is an easier to understand and implement exit condition). Also, to answer the comments, I guess my intention was that the solution should compute the number of iterations, or check when it had done enough, but there's nothing to prevent you from pre-computing the number of iterations and using that number. I really asked the question out of interest to see what people would come up with.

• Recursion in an ASP.NET MVC view

  I have a nested data object for a set of items within categories. Each category can contain sub categories and there is no set limit to the depth of sub categories. (A file system would have a similar structure.) It looks something like this: class category { public int id; public string name; public IQueryable<category> categories; public IQueryable<item> items; } class item { public int id; public string name; } I am passing a list of categories to my view as IQueryable<category>. I want to output the categories as a set of nested unordered list (<ul>) blocks. I could nest foreach loops, but then the depth of sub categories would be limited by the number of nested foreach blocks. In WinForms, I have done similar processing using recursion to populate a TreeView, but I haven't seen any examples of using recursion within an ASPX MVC view. Can recursion be done within an ASPX view? Are there other view engines that include recursion for view output?

• Why does my sharepoint web part event handler lose the sender value on postback?

  I have a web part which is going to be a part of pair of connected web parts. For simplicity, I am just describing the consumer web part. This web part has 10 link buttons on it. And they are rendered in the Render method instead ofCreateChildControls as this webpart will be receiving values based on input from the provider web part. Each Link Button has a text which is decided dynamically based on the input from provider web part. When I click on any of the Link Buttons, the event handler is triggered but the text on the Link Button shows up as the one set in CreateChildControls. When I trace the code, I see that the CreateChildControls gets called before the event handler (and i think that resets my Link Buttons). How do I get the event handler to show me the dynamic text instead? • jquery tab switching links so they jump to top of page?

  I was given some great help by redsquare to get this far to change jquery tabs from links within the content, but I have one more issue that I'm looking for support on... When a user clicks a link to switch to a different tab from within the content, can i get the page to jump to the top of the page? Within my demo link, scroll to the bottom of the page to click the links and they switch tabs just perfectly, which you can confirm if you scroll up. So, I'm looking for the switch to also jump the user to the top of the page, so the user doesn't have to "scroll" to the top of the page to begin reading new content. • Rails App hangs after few requests

  I have Bitnami Rails stack installed on my Mac. To better explain my problem i created a simple scaffold based rails app with mysql as the backend. I can get to perform simple POST and GET requests for a while and after a few requests the app just hangs indefinitely. No exception caught or anything worthwhile in the development log to report this strange behavior. • Understanding the Silverlight Dispatcher

  I had a Invalid Cross Thread access issue, but a little research and I managed to fix it by using the Dispatcher. Now in my app I have objects with lazy loading. I'd make an Async call using WCF and as usual I use the Dispatcher to update my objects DataContext, however it didn't work for this scenario. I did however find a solution here. Here's what I don't understand. In my UserControl I have code to call an Toggle method on my object. The call to this method is within a Dispatcher like so. Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => _CurrentPin.ToggleInfoPanel() ); As I mentioned before this was not enough to satisfy Silverlight. I had to make another Dispatcher call within my object. My object is NOT a UIElement, but a simple class that handles all its own loading/saving. So the problem was fixed by calling Deployment.Current.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => dataContext.Detail = detail ); within my class. Why did I have to call the Dispatcher twice to achieve this? Shouldn't a high-level call be enough? Is there a difference between the Deployment.Current.Dispatcher and the Dispatcher in a UIElement?

• Help with converting foreach loop to while loop in c#

  I had learnt by reading your great answers here, that it is not good practice deleting items from within a foreach loop, as it is (and I quote) "Sawing off the branch you're sitting on". My code currently removes the text from the dropdownlist, but the actual item remains (just without text displayed). In other words, it isn't deleting, and probably can't because you can't delete from within a foreach loop. • Multiple CodeSnippet in an XML .snippet file

  I'm attempting to supplement the help features for my code by providing other developers with code snippets. These produce skeletons of code which demonstrate how to use/call my classes or methods. I've created a .snippet file and have placed it in the "%Visual Studio Folder%\Code Snippets\Visual Basic\My Snippets" folder. I've used the Code Snippets Manager and ensured that it included this folder so that I can access the snippets. Everything works well when I have 1 CodeSnippet tag within the root CodeSnippets tag.... When I add more than one CodeSnippet tag to the file (each with their own title, and their own code example) I'm experiencing something strange. The first CodeSnippet I've added contains code for adding something to my system, the second contains code for editing something in my system, and the third deleting something from the system. When I use the code snippet by right clicking and selecting "Insert Code Snippet", only the first code snippet in the file shows up as an option. When I select it, the code in the first CodeSnippet is inserted....but so is the code within the other CodeSnippet tags. Do you have to have a separate XML .snippet file for each code snippet you want to make available? After reading through MSDN about creating Code Snippets I was under the impression that this could all be done within one file. It seems that I'm not understanding something very basic here and would love to find the answer but apparently Code Snippets are under used so finding the answer has proven to be a little trickier than I first thought it would be. • Help needed implementing a web based file management system with a file hierarchy system, help neede

  Hello i am trying to create a web application that will allow users to upload files online, i am using gwt while using hibernate for database communication, i am able to upload file to a server , and store them on the server. but what i want is to associate the files with a user. i want the user to be able to create folders and store a file in sub folders. my logic was to use the composite pattern to store folders and fileLocations with a user but i am am finding it difficult to implement this so i can show the files and folders within a gwt tree. what would be the best way to implement a hierarchy of folders and information of the location of a file so it could be displayed in a gwt tree? what i did have was a User would hold a reference to a root folder and then each sub folder could hold folders or fileLocations. i used the composite pattern to implement the file hierarchy, but when i want to display a the contents of a folder i need a for loop for each list. so i could a folder within a folder within a folder that would need 3 for loops to show the contents of my folders. What is the best way to implement this file management system. so what do you guys think?

  I have come across some strange behaviour, and I'm assuming a bug in firefox, when removing a input submit element from the DOM from within the click event. The following code reproduces the issue: <form name="test_form"> <input type="submit" value="remove me" onclick="this.parentNode.removeChild(this);" /> <input type="submit" value="submit normally" /> <input type="button" value="submit via js" onclick="document.test_form.submit();" /> </form> To reproduce: Click "remove me" Click "submit via js". Note that the form does not get submitted, this is the problem. Click "submit normally". Note that the form still gets submitted normally. It appears that, under Firefox, if you remove a submit button from within the click event it puts the form in an invalid state so that any future calls to form.submit() are simply ignored. But it is a javascript-specific issue as normal submit buttons within this form still function fine. To be honest, this is such a simple example of this issue that I was expecting the internet to be awash with other people exeriencing it, but so far searching has yealded nothing useful. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, did you get to the bottom of it? Many thanks

  Hello, I am working with Silverlight 3 beta, and am having an issue. I have a page that has a user control that I worte on it. The user control has a dependency property on it. If the user control does not define a data context (hence using the parent's data context), all works well. But if the user control has its own data context, the dependency property's OnPropertyChanged method never gets called. • How to use pthread_atfork() and pthread_once() to reinitialize mutexes in child processes

  We have a C++ shared library that uses ZeroC's Ice library for RPC and unless we shut down Ice's runtime, we've observed child processes hanging on random mutexes. The Ice runtime starts threads, has many internal mutexes and keeps open file descriptors to servers. Additionally, we have a few of mutexes of our own to protect our internal state. Our shared library is used by hundreds of internal applications so we don't have control over when the process calls fork(), so we need a way to safely shutdown Ice and lock our mutexes while the process forks. Reading the POSIX standard on pthread_atfork() on handling mutexes and internal state: Alternatively, some libraries might have been able to supply just a child routine that reinitializes the mutexes in the library and all associated states to some known value (for example, what it was when the image was originally executed). This approach is not possible, though, because implementations are allowed to fail *_init() and *_destroy() calls for mutexes and locks if the mutex or lock is still locked. In this case, the child routine is not able to reinitialize the mutexes and locks. On Linux, the this test C program returns EPERM from pthread_mutex_unlock() in the child pthread_atfork() handler. Linux requires adding _NP to the PTHREAD_MUTEX_ERRORCHECK macro for it to compile. This program is linked from this good thread. Given that it's technically not safe or legal to unlock or destroy a mutex in the child, I'm thinking it's better to have pointers to mutexes and then have the child make new pthread_mutex_t on the heap and leave the parent's mutexes alone, thereby having a small memory leak. The only issue is how to reinitialize the state of the library and I'm thinking of reseting a pthread_once_t. A new pthread_mutex_t is only created when the library function is invoked in the child process. This is hacky but maybe the best way of dealing with this skirting the standards. If the pthread_once_t contains a mutex then the system must have a way of initializing it from its PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT state. If it contains a pointer to a mutex allocated on the heap than it'll be forced to allocate a new one and set the address in the pthread_once_t. I'm hoping it doesn't use the address of the pthread_once_t for anything special which would defeat this. Searching comp.programming.threads group for pthread_atfork() shows a lot of good discussion and how little the POSIX standards really provides to solve this problem. There's also the issue that one should only call async-signal-safe functions from pthread_atfork() handlers, and it appears the most important one is the child handler, where only a memcpy() is done. Does this work? Is there a better way of dealing with the requirements of our shared library?

• Hudson + Jboss AS 7.1 + Maven 3 Project Build Error

  I've wanted to prepare an environment that I'm able to build my project and run my tests on a integration server. So I've installed an Jboss application server 7.1 and deployed hudson.war to it. Then I've created a project to trigger "mvn clean install" and when I built it I've got following exception. So how can I configure the hudson to force it looking at the right place for jars? Is there anyone has an idea? Thanks in advance.
