• Minimal Ubuntu remastering

  So i was trying to remaster a ubuntu mini remix using the tool called 'customizer'. my goal is to create a version with a gui capable of networking too. i don't like all the tomboy notes, evolution and unity stuff that natty has came with. http://www.ubuntu-mini-remix.org/ http://u-customizer.sourceforge.net/ the packages i installed are just xorg and gnome-desktop-environment apt-get --no-install-recommends xorg gnome-desktop-environment well it worked quite well. i just want to ask if there are any minimum packages other that the two mentioned above? the lubuntu-desktop is great too. but i want gnome more coz it has a wider community (imo) oh and please don't refer me to LFS .im still too noob for that xD

  I start the Method Profiler for a process, then leave it run for about 5-10 secs, then I stop it. • Updates to fullcalendar events (through updateEvent) not maintaining across ajax month changes

  Hey there. I have the calendar configured to allow me to edit and add (drag/drop) calendar events. I use .fullCalendar('updateEvent', theEvent) to edit an event, and it immediately updates on the page. Excellent. If I move to another month and then move back (get via ajax), that change is undone. By contrast, if I add a new event by drag/drop using: .fullCalendar('renderEvent', newEventObject, true); it appears on the calendar, and if I move to another month, and move back, it maintains. If I edit this newly added event object, and move to another month and back, the updates are retained! So the "stickiness" of edits seem to work on newly added events, but not events that were pulled via ajax (since it just pulls a fresh version via ajax when the month changes). My calendar config is: $('#calendar').fullCalendar({ theme: true, header: { left: "prev,next today", center: 'title', right: "today prev,next" }, selectable: true, selectHelper: true, select: calendarSelect, droppable: true, drop: calendarDrop, events:getCalendarData, eventClick:calendarEventClicked }); I tried setting editable: true, as well, but no dice. I noticed that if I view "event.source" on one of the ajax pulled events, it shows me a function, and if i read the source attribute on one of the "added" events, it reads [object]. So I tried setting the event.source of the event being added, to that same event object: curCalendarEvent.source = curCalendarEvent But no dice. It sets, but when I move back month forward again, it returns to the function as a source. I tried adding lazyFetching: false to my calendar config, but that didn't help. I even tried a .fullCalendar('renderEvent', curCalendarEvent, true); on the existing "edited" event to see if I could get "stick" to work, and it didn't help. The only thing I can think of doing is deleting the event flat out and recreating it. Any help would be appreciated. -Brian

• Where are classpath, path and pathelement documented in Ant version 1.8.0?

  I'm looking over the documentation that comes with Apache Ant version 1.8.0 and can't find where classpath, path and pathelement are documented. I've found a page that describes path like structures but it doesn't list the valid attributes or nested elements for these. Another thing I can't find in the documentation is a description of the relationships between filelist, fileset, patternset and path and how to convert them back and forth. • Retain only dependencies of a given package

  I am trying to have a minimal version of Ubuntu, having only those packages necessary to run mininet. So, I would like a solution, where I would be able to uninstall all the packages from the system, except those that are needed to run mininet. A much more preferable solution would be to be able to create a new ISO, with mininet and all it's dependencies. Is there any program out there which is already capable of this? If not please guide me on how I can solve my problem? Note: I need to retain not only the direct dependencies of mininet, but also dependencies of dependencies and so on. The final system should be able to run mininet without a hitch.

I went through the archive of those and compiled a list of some of the (IMHO) most relevant and most frequently asked questions, I'd like to share. Also, should you have questions, as usual, feel free to ask those there, too.  ...and here come the answered questions:  When will Exadata be based on Solaris in place of Oracle Enterprise Linux?Exadata offers both Solaris 11 or Oracle Enterprise Linux.  The choice can be made at deployment time based on your OS needs.What are all other benefits and futures avilable in solaris 11 (cloud O.S.) compared to cloud based Red Hat Linux and Windows?suggest you check out our cloud white paper for a view of this. On x86 can install VirtualBox in a Zone and use that to host other OSes.Yes, this was one of the first things we made sure would work when we acquired VirtualBox when we were still Sun Microsystems. If I have a Solaris 11 Control Domain on a T-series, can I run a Solaris 10 Ldom with Solaris 8 branded containers?Yes, you can.Is Oracle Solaris free or do we need to purchase?Solaris is free, the entitlement to run it comes either with a Sun system (new or historical) or for 3rd party systems the entitlement comes with a support contract. Note that for production use you will be expected to get a support contract. If you don't want to use the Solaris system (Sun or 3rd party) for production use (i.e. development) you can get an OTN license on the Oracle Technical Network website. Will encryption and deduplication both work on a share?This should work at the same time. What approaches does Solaris use to monitor usage?There are many different tools in Solaris to monitor usage. The main ones are the "stats" (vmstat, mpstat, prstat, ...), the kstat interface, and DTrace (to get details you couldn't see before). And then there are layered tools that can interface with these tools (Ops Center, BMC, CA, Tivoli, ...) Apart little-endian, big-endian how is it easy to port Solaris applications on Sparc to x86 and vice-versa ?Very easy. Except for certain hardware specific applications (those that utilize hardware specific drivers), all of the same Oracle Solaris APIs exist for all architectures. Is IPS based patching aware of the fact that zones can reside on ZFS and move from one physical server to another ?IPS is definitely aware of zones and uses ZFS to support boot environments for non-global zones in the same way that's used for the global zone. With respect to moving a zone from one physical server to another, Solaris 11 supports to the same zone attach/deattach method that was introduced in Solaris 10. Is vnic support in Ldoms planned?This is currently being investigated for a future LDOM release. Is it possible with the new patching system to build a system later with the same patch level as a system built a few months earlier?Yes, you can choose/define exactly which version should go to the system and it will always put the same bits in place. The technical answer is that you choose the version of the "entire" package you want on the system and the rest flows from there. Is it in the plans to allow zones to add/remove zpools to running zones dynamically in future updates?Work in this area is currently under investigation. Any plans to realese Solaris 11 source code? i.e. opensolaris?We currently can't comment on publicly releasing the source code. If you need/want this access please let your Oracle account team know. What about VirtualBox and Solaris11 for virtualization?Solaris 11 works great with VirtualBox, as both a client and a host system. Will Oracle DB software eventually be supplied as IPS packages? When?We don't have a date yet but this is actively being worked on. What are the new artifacts in Oracle Solaris 11 than the previous versions?There are quite a few actually. The best start is to look at our "Evaluate Solaris 11" page, and there you also can find a Transition Guide. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/overview/evaluate-1530234.html So, this seems just like RedHat's YUM environment?IPS offers certain features beyond those in YUM or other packaging systems. For example, IPS works with ZFS and Solaris Boot Environments to provide a safe environment for software lifecycle management so that changes can be reverted by switching to an older boot environment. With Zones on solaris 11, can I do paravirtualitation?The great thing about zones is you don't *need* paravirtualization. You're making the same direct kernel calls that you would outside of a zone.  It's an incredibly significant performance win over hypervisor-based virtualization. Are zones/containers officially supported to run Oracle Databases?  EBIZ?Hi Calvin, the answer is yes, here is the support matrix for DB:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/virtualizationmatrix-172995.html I've found some nasty bugs in Solaris 11 (one of which today) that have been fixed in community forks (i.e., Illumos). Will Oracle ever restart collaboration with the community?We continue to work with the community, just not as open on all projects as we did before (For example IPS is an open project) and the source of more than half of the Solaris packages is posted on our opensource websites. I can't comment on what we will do in the future. And with regards to bugs please file them through the support organization and we will get them resolved. Is zpool vdev removal on-the fly now possible ?This issue is actively being investigated although we don't have a date for when this feature will be available. They use Solaris Cluster to do this. What about VMware vMotion like feature?We have secure live migration with both Logical Domains on SPARC T series systems, and with Oracle VM on x86 systems. When running Solaris 10/11 on an enterprise server with a lot of zones, what are best practises commands to show the system is running fine? (has enough hardware resources). For example CPU / Memory / I/O / system load. What are the recommended values?For Solaris 11, look into the new zonestat(1M) command that provides a great deal of information about zone utilization. In addition, there is new work underway in providing additional observability in areas such as per-zone file system I/O. Java optimizations done with Solaris 11? For X86 platforms too?   I have a DLL which provided a decoding function, as follows: function MyDecode (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer; var Dest: PChar; DestLen: Integer): Boolean; stdcall; The HostApp call "MyDecode", and transfer into the Source, SourceLen and Dest parameters, the DLL returns decoded Dest and DestLen. The problem is: The HostApp impossible to know decoded Dest length, and therefore would not know how to pre-allocated Dest's memory. I know that can split "MyDecode" into two functions: function GetDecodeLen (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer): Integer; stdcall; // Return the Dest's length function MyDecodeLen (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer; var Dest: PChar): Boolean; stdcall; But, My decoding process is very complicated, so if split into two functions will affect the efficiency. Is there a better solution?

  C++0x has added explicit conversion operators, but they must always be defined as members of the Source class. The same applies to the assignment operator, it must be defined on the Target class. When the Source and Target classes of the needed conversion are independent of each other, neither the Source can define a conversion operator, neither the Target can define a constructor from a Source.   Hi, I'm using Delphitwain (delphitwain.sourceforge.net) to add scan functionality to my app. Everything was fine, when i click scan button on my app it will show scan mode with scanner's Properties such as Page Size, Scanning Side (canon dr-3010c) and there is a Scan button and Cancel button. If i click cancel of course all the properties back to it's value before. • R: disentangling scopes

  Hi, Right now, in my R project, I have functions1.R with doFoo() and doBar(), functions2.R with other functions, and main.R with the main program in it, which first does source('functions1.R'); source('functions2.R'), and then calls the other functions. I've been starting the program from the R GUI in Mac OS X, with source('main.R'). This is fine the first time, but after that, the variables that were defined the first time through the program are defined for the second time functions*.R are sourced, and so the functions get a whole bunch of extra variables defined. I don't want that! I want an "undefined variable" error when my function uses a variable it shouldn't! Twice this has given me very late nights of debugging! So how do other people deal with this sort of problem? Is there something like source(), but that makes an independent namespace that doesn't fall through to the main one? Making a package seems like one solution, but it seems like a big pain in the butt compared to e.g. Python, where a source file is automatically a separate namespace. Any tips? Thank you!

  I want to develop a Python application on Ubuntu 12.04 using python 2.4, but since the default version of python on ubuntu is 2.7. I cannot get the libraries and packages to work for python 2.4. I have tried using virtualenv but even with virtualenv I was not successful in installing packages for python2.4. So I would like to know if there is any reliable method to get python 2.4 to work with Ubuntu. I know that I shouldnt mess with the default version of python on ubuntu and hence I am looking for a better alternative. Thanks in advance.

  Trying to include a source-file into my latex document using the listings package, i got problems with german umlauts inside of the comments in the code. Using \lstset{ extendedchars=\true, inputencoding=utf8x } Umlauts in the source files (encoded in UTF-8 without BOM) are processed, but they are somehow moved to the beginning of the word they are contained in. So // die Größe muss berücksichtigt werden in the input source file, becomes // die ößGre muss übercksichtigt werden in the output file.   I work on legacy systems and I used to see revision history of files or functions being modified every release in the source code, for example: // // Rev. No Date Author Description // ------------------------------------------------------- // 1.0 2009/12/01 johnc <Some description> // 1.1 2009/12/24 daveb <Some description> // ------------------------------------------------------- void Logger::initialize() { // a = b; // Old code, just commented and not deleted a = b + c; // New code } I'm just wondering if this way of documenting history is still being practiced by many today? If yes, how do you apply modifications on the source code - do you comment it or delete it completely? If not, what's the best way to document these revisions? If you use version control systems, does it follow that your source files contain pure source codes, except for comments when necessary (no revision history for each function, etc.)?

• Installing MOSS 2007 on Windows 2008 R2

  When you try to install MOSS 2007 on Windows 2008 R2, if you are using an installation media that is older than SP2, you would get the following error, saying that “This program is blocked due to compatibility issues”    All is not lost though, all you need to do is to slip stream the SP2 updates to the MOSS 2007 Setup. • Multiple addon domains to point to main domain filesystem

  Hi, I have a main domain (www.mysite.com). All the files (source code) are stored within the public_html directory. I added one addon domain (www.mysite.net). By default it points to public_html/mysite.net/ directory. Is it possible that it reads all the files (source code) from public_html directory itself. Actually I am planning to have multiple addon domains, the source code for all will be same.

• Common Live Upgrade problems

  As I have worked with customers deploying Live Upgrade in their environments, several problems seem to surface over and over. With this blog article, I will try to collect these troubles, as well as suggest some workarounds. If this sounds like the beginnings of a Wiki, you would be right. At present, there is not enough material for one, so we will use this blog for the time being. I do expect new material to be posted on occasion, so if you wish to bookmark it for future reference, a permanent link can be found here. Live Upgrade copies over ZFS root clone This was introduced in Solaris 10 10/09 (u8) and the root of the problem is a duplicate entry in the source boot environments ICF configuration file. Prior to u8, a ZFS root file system was not included in /etc/vfstab, since the mount is implicit at boot time. Starting with u8, the root file system is included in /etc/vfstab, and when the boot environment is scanned to create the ICF file, a duplicate entry is recorded. Here's what the error looks like. # lucreate -n s10u9-baseline Checking GRUB menu... System has findroot enabled GRUB Analyzing system configuration. Comparing source boot environment file systems with the file system(s) you specified for the new boot environment. Determining which file systems should be in the new boot environment. The error indicator ----- /usr/lib/lu/lumkfs: test: unknown operator zfs Populating file systems on boot environment . Checking selection integrity. Integrity check OK. Populating contents of mount point . This should not happen ------ Copying. Ctrl-C and cleanup If you weren't paying close attention, you might not even know this is an error. The symptoms are lucreate times that are way too long due to the extraneous copy, or the one that alerted me to the problem, the root file system is filling up - again thanks to a redundant copy. This problem has already been identified and corrected, and a patch (121431-58 or later for x86, 121430-57 for SPARC) is available. Unfortunately, this patch has not yet made it into the Solaris 10 Recommended Patch Cluster. Applying the prerequisite patches from the latest cluster is a recommendation from the Live Upgrade Survival Guide blog, so an additional step will be required until the patch is included. This time it took just a few seconds. I know, I hate it when that happens too. Here's what the "error" looks like. # luupgrade -u -s /mnt -n s10u9-baseline System has findroot enabled GRUB No entry for BE in GRUB menu Copying failsafe kernel from media. 61364 blocks miniroot filesystem is Mounting miniroot at ERROR: The auto registration file does not exist or incomplete. The auto registration file is mandatory for this upgrade. Use -k argument along with luupgrade command. autoreg_file is path to auto registration information file. See sysidcfg(4) for a list of valid keywords for use in this file. The format of the file is as follows. oracle_user=xxxx oracle_pw=xxxx http_proxy_host=xxxx http_proxy_port=xxxx http_proxy_user=xxxx http_proxy_pw=xxxx For more details refer "Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 Installation Guide: Planning for Installation and Upgrade". As with the previous problem, this is also easy to work around. Assuming that you don't want to use the auto-registration feature at upgrade time, create a file that contains just autoreg=disable and pass the filename on to luupgrade. You can register your version of Oracle Solaris to capture this data for your use, or the data is sent anonymously. For information about what configuration data is communicated and how to control this facility, see the Release Notes or www.oracle.com/goto/solarisautoreg. INFORMATION: After activated and booted into new BE , Auto Registration happens automatically with the following Information autoreg=disable ####################################################################### Validating the contents of the media . The media is a standard Solaris media. The media contains an operating system upgrade image. The media contains version . Constructing upgrade profile to use. Locating the operating system upgrade program. Checking for existence of previously scheduled Live Upgrade requests. Creating upgrade profile for BE . Checking for GRUB menu on ABE . Saving GRUB menu on ABE . Checking for x86 boot partition on ABE. Determining packages to install or upgrade for BE . Performing the operating system upgrade of the BE . CAUTION: Interrupting this process may leave the boot environment unstable or unbootable. The Live Upgrade operation now proceeds as expected. Once the system upgrade is complete, we can manually register the system. • New channels for Exadata 11.2.3.1.1

  With the release of Exadata 11.2.3.1.0 back in April 2012 Oracle has deprecated the minimal pack for the Exadata Database Servers (compute nodes). From that release the Linux Database Server updates will be done using ULN and YUM. For the 11.2.3.1.0 release the ULN exadata_dbserver_11.2.3.1.0_x86_64_base channel was made available and Exadata operators could subscribe their system to it via linux.oracle.com. With the new 11.2.3.1.1 release two additional channels are added: a 'latest' channel (exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_latest) a 'patch' channel (exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch) The patch channel has the new or updated packages updated in 11.2.3.1.1 from the base channel. The latest channel has all the packages from 11.2.3.1.0 base and patch channels combined.  From here there are three possible situations a Database Server can be in before it can be updated to 11.2.3.1.1: Database Server is on Exadata release < 11.2.3.1.0 Database Server is patched to 11.2.3.1.0 Database Server is freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0 In order to bring a Database Server to 11.2.3.1.1 for all three cases the same approach for updating can be used (using YUM), but there are some minor differences: For Database Servers on a release < 11.2.3.1.0 the following high-level steps need to be performed: Subscribe to el5_x86_64_addons, ol5_x86_64_latest and  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_latest Create local repository Point Database Server to the local repository* install the update * during this process a one-time action needs to be done (details in the README) For Database Servers patched to 11.2.3.1.0: Subscribe to patch channel  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch Create local repository Point Database Server to the local repository Update the system For Database Servers freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0: Subscribe to patch channel  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch Create local  repository Point Database Server to the local repository Update the system The difference between 'situation 2' (Database Server is patched to 11.2.3.1.0) and 'situation 3' (Database Server is freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0) is that in situation 2 the existing Exadata-computenode.repo file needs to be edited while in situation 3 this file is not existing  and needs to be created or copied. Another difference is that you will end up with more OFA packages installed in situation 2. This is because none are removed during the updating process.  The YUM update functionality with the new channels is a great enhancements to the Database Server update procedure.
