• Linux Development System Layout.Configuration

  Hi. Looking to create a linux based development/test system. I'm the only one using it. Will be using a variant of rhel/centos/fedora, with a 640G drive, and an external 250G as a kind of backup. Looking for thoughts/comments on the layout/config of the drive for the install/creation process. My primary goal is to be able to "backup"/restore the work product so i'd like OS to be separate from everything else. Thoughts/commnents/ponters appreciated. Thanks

• Running own DNS Server for learning purpose

  I would like to run my own DNS server in my laptop for learning purpose. I recently used Google Public DNS and liked it. I wanted to build some thing similar and small for my web browsing. What I vaguely dream of is to use my own DNS server as Primary DNS server and Google public DNS as secondary DNS server. I would like to build my own DNS server gradually by editing the configuration files (If it can be automated it will be great, but have no clues there). Sometimes it sounds like a stupid idea to me, but I am fine with editing config file for each site I want to add to my DNS server. Any pointers/suggestion is welcome.

• Error when reinstalling apache2

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured. I purged it also and when i now try to reinstall i get the error Setting up apache2 (2.4.10-1) ... Directory /etc/apache2/conf.d is not empty - leaving as is Please note, that directory is considered obsolete and not read anymore by default zz010_psa_httpd.conf ERROR: Config file dir.conf not properly enabled: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dir.conf is a real file, not touching it dpkg: error processing package apache2 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: apache2 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

• X11 Forwarding works on Windows with Xming and Putty, but not with ssh command line

  I have a micro Amazon instance the I want to use for testing and everything is going fine until the title. If I set up all the info in PuTTy, open it up and run 'xclock', all runs perfectly and it opens on Xming on my local desktop. If, however, I run ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com xclock I get Error: Can't open display: If I run either of ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com -X DISPLAY=localhost:0:0 xclock ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com -Y DISPLAY=localhost:0:0 xclock I get the same again, but just after about a 30 second delay. In .ssh/config in Windows, I do have ForwardX11 yes set, and I really can't think of anything more to get this working. The fact that PuTTy is working perfectly, not no matter what I do on the command line, I get absolutely no joy is driving me crazy. Can I even see the commands PuTTy is running somewhere, to see if it's doing some extra magic? The ssh I'm running in Windows is MinGW32's.

• How to disable horizontal scrolling within virtualbox on Ubuntu guest, Windows 7 host?

  I am using Windows 7 as Host, Ubuntu Karmic as guest OS with guest tools installed and I get an annoying glitch when switching from host to the guest machine: Vertical scrolling switches to horizontal! (using the mouse wheel). Since I don't really care about horizontal scrolling, how can I disable this? I have checked the web and the only thing I found was to play in the xorg.conf file and adding in the section "InputDevice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" which would enable vertical scrolling only. The thing is, I don't have that section in my config file so I guessed that I would need to add Section "InputDevice" Identifier "VBoxMouse" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection But that does not seem to work after restarting xserver. Any workaround for this?

  I want to tunnel all my internet traffic through my vps, so I'm trying to install a proxy server. However: I can't seem to browse the internet through Dante. I get the ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE error. • apache2 slow responding (debian)

  I'm running an apache2 2.2.9 webserver with modpython and mpm_worker_module. The current config for the mpm is ServerLimit 32 StartServers 10 MaxClients 800 MinSpareThreads 25 MaxSpareThreads 75 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 The server has 1G of ram and a 100Mbit connection. Checking netstat -na | grep ESTABLISHED | wc -l gives me a number between 50 - 60. The load is about 1.0 Every pageload is also cached by memcached. I can't see why the server is so slow in responding to new connections, sometimes droping them completely? Also tried disabling iptables to make sure it's not because of a full state table or something like that. The only thing in dmesg is a lot of spam about "TCP: Treason uncloaked!"

  I have an problem with my NodeJS app. The problem is the include of the library Hashlib I've followed more than 10 times the instructions to install. Get a clone of the repo, do make and make install. NodeJS is installed in default path, and that's the tricky point: When I launch node app.js it works, perfectly. The problem starts when I configured my Supervisord to run with the same user, with the same config file as I have in other systems working, and I get that NodeJS can't find hashlib. module.js:337 throw new Error("Cannot find module '" + request + "'"); ^ Error: Cannot find module 'hashlib' I'm getting crazy, what can I do?! Why my user launching node from the console works great, but not the supervisord? Thanks!

The issue I am having with clean urls is that requests to files are being rewritten into index.php as well. • IIS- defining a website as a dev site

  I am new to IIS. Is there a way during the setup of IIS to have a variable of some sort set that I can use to tell my site that this is the development copy? I am using PHP via IIS 7.5 and would like to have a file with a few lines that define which databases etc is used by my application. Is this the purpose of web.config? I would love there to be a place in the setup of the website where I can set a few variables that are accessibly by my application. That way, when I migrate files to live, I don't need to worry about access details to databases etc.

I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. • Windows XP Pro SP3 stop error code 0x000000F4

  I have a system running Windows XP Pro SP3. My wife is the primary user of this system, and the last several days in a row, when she tries to log in to the system it gives her a BSOD with the stop error code 0x000000F4. The rest of the error codes change every time she tries to log on, but that one seems to stay constant. The error it gives me is: A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. The machine will also get stuck in a boot loop, where it keeps giving me the screen saying that windows did not start successfully, and to choose how to start windows. I have tried Safe Mode, Last known Good Config, and Normally, and all have resulted in either a return to the boot loop, or BSOD. What might this mean? How can I fix it, without doing a clean install?

• How to re-do the hard disks in a WD Word Book Edition II ?

  I recently purchased a WD World Book II, a 2 TB one. I call it the "White Box". It has those 2 1TB drives, and they were in this RAID 1 config, only giving me about 1 TB. I could not delete the raid array, and I took the drives in a Linux box. But I also deleted the entire partitions of the disks, and I cannot even et the existing RAID array on this WD White Box. The drives are fine, but I cannot get them to work on the WD White Box. My goal was to get back to a real 2 TB storage space. If I cannot get those drives back in the White Box, I can re-use them elsewhere, but this would mean a waste of the firmware and network connection. After the fact, I read that, anyway, the network performance is rather poor. Thanks :-)

  I would like to run two XAMPP apache servers and mysql on one Windows computer. My first idea was to run one under directory XAMPP, the other under XAMPP_B. Why you ask? I have two applications that have to be in the "root" directory of localhost. Both servers do not have to be active at same time, so I don't think I will have any conflicts I will have to modify my.cnf in mySQL httpd.conf, apache_start and maybe other config files as well. Or maybe someone can suggest a better way...

• Why is my eth0 getting a dynamic ip when it is configured to be static?

  For some reason our office linux box is being assigned an ip address via dhcp and I don't know why. What is confusing to me is that when I check system-config-network it shows that my eth0 is setup to be a static ip address. And /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 also shows it is setup to be a static ip, yet it is getting a different ip address than the one specified in the ifcfg-eth0. Let me know if you have any suggestions on or ideas on where I can look next. Here are a few details that might help you figure out what an idiot I am :) Fedora 11 Router in front of this box is running dhcp, starting at 10.42.1.100 This box is configured to be 10.42.1.50 (at least I think it is!), subnet 255.255.255.0 (which is same as the router's lan subnet) Instead of having the static IP, this box is getting assigned 10.42.1.100. • Sharing an external hard drive in Ubuntu using Samba

  /media/MYDISK is where my hard drive is mounted automatically. I created a symlink using: ln -s /media/MYDISK /home/camilo/MYDISK chmod 777 /home/camilo/MYDISK I'm setting up smb.conf like this: [myshare1] comment = external disk browsable = yes path = /home/camilo/MYDISK guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0775 Also, in the [global] section I tried adding the following lines: follow symlinks = yes wide links = yes unix extensions = no The problem is that when browsing the shared folder in Windows 7, I get a "\\etc\myshare1 is not accessible" error. When pointing the path to a regular folder it works fine. Also, when I point it directly to /media/MYDISK, it shows the same error. EDIT: to make it more interesting, I have no graphical interface, so I need to touch the config files directly..

• How do I securely execute commands as root via a web control panel?

  I would like to build a very simple PHP based web based control panel to add and remove users to/from and add and remove sections to/from nginx config files on my linode vps (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS). What is the most secure way of executing commands as root based on input from a web based control panel? I am loathe to run PHP as root (even if behind an IP tables firewall) for the obvious reasons. Suggestions welcome. It must be possible as several commercial (and bloated, for my needs) control panels offer similar functionality. Thanks
