• How to call virtual function of an object in C++

  I'm struggling with calling a virtual function in C++. I'm not experienced in C++, I mainly use C# and Java so I might have some delusions, but bear with me. I have to write a program where I have to avoid dynamic memory allocation if possible. I have made a class called List: template <class T> class List { public: T items[maxListLength]; int length; List() { length = 0; } T get(int i) const { if (i >= 0 && i < length) { return items[i]; } else { throw "Out of range!"; } }; // set the value of an already existing element void set(int i, T p) { if (i >= 0 && i < length) { items[i] = p; } else { throw "Out of range!"; } } // returns the index of the element int add(T p) { if (length >= maxListLength) { throw "Too many points!"; } items[length] = p; return length++; } // removes and returns the last element; T pop() { if (length > 0) { return items[--length]; } else { throw "There is no element to remove!"; } } }; It just makes an array of the given type, and manages the length of it. There is no need for dynamic memory allocation, I can just write: List<Object> objects; MyObject obj; objects.add(obj); MyObject inherits form Object. Object has a virtual function which is supposed to be overridden in MyObject: struct Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 0.0f; } }; struct MyObject: public Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 1.0f; } }; I get the elements as: objects.get(0).method(asdf); The problem is that even though the first element is a MyObject, the Object's method function is called. I'm guessing there is something wrong with storing the object in an array of Objects without dynamically allocating memory for the MyObject, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to call MyObject's method function? How? It's supposed to be a heterogeneous collection btw, so that's why the inheritance is there in the first place. If there is no way to call the MyObject's method function, then how should I make my list in the first place?

• How can I use multithreading in a Windows Forms application to update a progress bar?

  There are two objects. The Windows Form with a button and a progress bar, and another object that handles an algorithm. In the algorithm object there is an event, and a property. The event is ProgressChanged, and the property is Progress (which is an int). In the calling window, the button starts off a set of steps in the algorithm object. As each step (or substeps) occurs, the ProgressChanged event fires, and in the window there is an event handler that essentially increments the progress bar relative to the Progress property. The problem I am running into is that because the algorithm has a possibility (and high liklihood) of running a relatively long time, I need to move it into it's own background thread and push the event back up to the window. My issue is that I'm not completely sure what I'm doing when it comes to multi-threading. I've looked at Control.Invoke and I'm a little lost. Can someone point me in the right direction?

  Hi, I display a list of items via select1 control using xxforms:tree appearance. They are displayed via a code block like: <xforms:itemset nodeset="instance('dataInstance')/*"> <xforms:label ref="fn:concat(./NAME,', ','ID: ',./ID)"/> <xforms:value ref="./ID"/> </xforms:itemset> </xforms:select1> I want to display two icons for each item on the same row as the item: one icon for deleting and one for editing that item, which would all invoke XPL with the item ID as the parameter. The question, how do I render those icons - does itemset support nested trigger elements? If not, how do I go about achieving it (clicking on the item results in an action other than edit or delete, so cannot use that; can show delete/edit on the page shown when user clicks on the item, but want to save that one click if the user just wants to delete the item for example).   I am new to C# and trying to create my 1st app. I have 3 errors. The first two say that txtSalary and Salary do not exist. The 3rd says that it cannot convert method group 'ToString' to non-delegate type 'string'. and asks if I intend to invoke the method. Then numeric answer converted to string and displayed in messagebox named txtSalary. Please show me what I got wrong because according to the book, I am not missing anything.

• Displaying conditional amount of fields in UI (Android)

  I am using layout xml documents for my ui controls. I need to create and remove these controls (input fields) on the fly, based on how many results I get back from my database. For each group, there can be 0..* fields and these are prepopulated from the database. Also, it would be good if I can invoke a method to create an additional field; something like the address book, where you can click + or - to add or remove a phone or other detail. In a "psuedo" style, I'm guessing something like this: Check database - How many of X are there [y]? Create Y fields. The user may then add new fields, so once I click submit i need to apply all of that to database. Any examples or hints greatly welcomed. Hope this make sense! :)

I understand that by default cookies are sent with HTTP request, but is there any way at all to overwrite that behavior and not send the cookie? • Using Java, can I have one JVM spawn another, and then have the original one exit?

  I have a need to have a running JVM start another JVM and then exit. I'm currently trying to do this via Runtime.getRuntime().exec(). The other JVM starts, but my original JVM won't exit until the "child" JVM process stops. It appears that using Runtime.getRuntime().exec() creates a parent-child relationship between the processes. Is there some way to de-couple the spawned process so that the parent can die, or some other mechanism to spawn a process without any relationship to the creating process? Note that this seems exactly like this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2566502/using-java-to-spawn-a-process-and-keep-it-running-after-parent-quits but the accepted answer there doesn't actually work, at least not on my system (Windows 7, Java 5 and 6). It seems that maybe this is a platform-dependent behavior. I'm looking for a platform independent way to reliably invoke the other process and let my original process die.

  Hi there. I have a javascript function that gets a DIV by an ID and makes a clone. Then, removes the original DIV from DOM and inserts the cloned object..Everything works fine, except in IE, because the original DIV is never removed... var loadingDiv = $(Sybil.conf.loadingDivId), loadingClone = loadingDiv.clone(true); console.log($$('.loadingImg')); loadingDiv.remove(); //Insert the loading div on the page again elt.insert({after: loadingClone}); [loadingClone].invoke(func); console.log($$('.loadingImg')); The div also has a span inside with the class "loadingImg", so i just used the console.log to check how many elements there are. FF always prints [span.loadingImg] but IE prints [span.loadingImg,span.loadingImg] on the second console.log... Any idea of what might be happening? Thanks

  Currently ISPs deal out addresses via DHCP for IPv4 dynamic (single) addresses. What protocol will/are ISPs going to use for IPv6 when they can hand a customer an entire /64 (or /48 if they are nice) block? DHCPv6, RA? For ISPs that support true end-to-end IPv6 will they provide gateway devices (similar to cable modem or true DSL bridges for example) that receive border information for that specific customer? I'm just trying to get an idea of how your common residential service customer will have to configure things in an IPv6 Internet (whenever that comes). Will it be something customers are expected to statically configure on their home wireless router? Today with IPv4 I do it like this: Modem (bridge) passes public IPv4 obtained via DHCPv4 from ISP to second device (wireless router). It in turn has its own DHCPv4 service it provides on the internal lan.

  I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

  I am using CoreData in my application. I want to abstract out all the CoreData related stuff as an API so that the consume can use the API instead of directly using CoreData and its generated model objects. CoreData generates the managed objects model as following @interface Person : NSManagedObject @end I want to define my API for example MyAPI and it has a function called as createPerson:(Person*)p; So the consumer of this createPerson API needs to create a Person data object (like POJO in java world) and invoke this API. But I cannot create Person object using Person *p = [Person alloc] init] because the designated initializer for this Person model created by CoreData does not allow this type of creation. So should I define corresponding user facing data object may be PersonDO and this API should take that instead to carry the data into the API implementation? Is my approach right? Any expert advise if design the API this way is a good design pattern?

  Hello, I am trying to create a test harness for our QA staff to test our internal web services. I would like to create a web app that will allow them to enter a uri then submit. The web app will then interrogate the uri to get the appropriate parameters expected and returns with a generated input form. I know, this would be similar to SOAPUI and others. However, I feel it would be earier for them to be able to just use a form with entry fields and click a button to invoke the service and get the results back for display in the web app. In addition, I could create some custom logic that allows them to generate specific behavior they need. Has anybody done anything like this? I have searched and have found similar functionality but nothing close enough to help me. If you need more details please let me know. Any product existed and recommend?and if I need to implement myself,any idea or advice?How can I embed the widget interface into the manager(engine) interface seamless,how can I invoke the specified window(maybe not the init window) in the widget air application from the manager?   I was wondering: Is it possible to customize the Android Contact Picker so that it can also allow adding a new contact as a menu option in the default contact list? At the moment, if I invoke the contact picker from my activity, it only displays the default contact list. I would also like the user to be able to create a new contact if it did not exist already. I have searched this quite a lot but do not find appropriate API to do this. There is nothing in ContactContract as far as I can see.

  I have developped an application that can process data (in my case image algorithms performed on videos). I have developed different ProcessingMethods. Sometimes several videos are processed in parallel. Each process runs in a seperate thread. I have a GUI with several ProgressBars, one for each thread that is processing data. What is a good way to update the ProgressBar? Today my GUI is creating all the processing threads and one progressBars for each thread. Then I pass those progressBars to the threads, which pass them to the ProcessingMethod. The ProcessingMethod will then update the progressbar (using Invoke(..)). I have different processingMethods. Within each of these methods I have copy-paste code to update the progressBar. Although I am a new to programming, I know copy-paste is not good. What is a good way to make it better?

• AS3 Passing data between objects/classes

  So i a building a categorized menu of different foods. I have a class for "categories" (buttons) which essentially will return a string "salads", "drinks", etc. I now have another class "menuItems" for items within categories and this handles sizes such as "small", "med", "large", etc. My problem now is that when i return "salads", i want to invoke an array which contains all the elements of salads, send it to menuItems which will populate the menu. So far i have both the category objects and the menu object setup. I just cant seem to be able to send the data that the category object is returning and pass it to the menu object. Both of which are added to the stage as shown below: If there was a way that i could say add all these classes to one class so that they can talk to each other that would be great but i dont know how to do this. Been stuck for hours, please any help is greatly appreciated.

How does one do this? Of course, this works: import sys lines = """This is a string It has multiple lines there are three total""" for line in lines.splitlines(): print line But I need to be able to process an argument line-by-line. EDIT: This is probably more of a Windows command-line problem than a Python problem. EDIT 2: Thanks for all of the good suggestions. It doesn't look like it's possible. I can't use another shell because I'm actually trying to invoke the script from another program which seems to use the Windows command-line behind the scenes.
