• Bad at math, feeling limited

  Currently I'm a java developer, making websites. I'm really bad at math, in high school I got suspened because of it once. I didn't program then and had no interest in math. I started programming after high school and started feeling that my poor math skills are limiting me. I feel like the programming's not that hard for me. Though web development in general is not that hard, i guess. I've been doing Spring and Hibernate a lot. What i'm trying to ask is : if I understand and can manage these technologies and programming overall, would it mean that I have some higher than average prerequisite for math and details? Would there be any point or would it be easy for me to take some courses in high school math and get a BSc in math maybe? This web development is really starting to feel like not my cup of tea anymore, i would like to do something more interesting. I'm 25 now and feel like stuck. Any help appreciated.

• Xpath automatization software

  Too sad this topic was closed. But I'm kind of a having the same question. I want to construct xpathes, for common html block which appears on page. For example: you can give two URLs to that software, which will contain SAME html blocks (divs) , but having different content in it. by giving 2 stackoverflow.com url's, software could detect that same div#id is being used once again, and just give XPATH'es of those html blocks like for example. Of course I can find xpath'es my self, as far as I remember, firebug makes it easy,shows xpath of every html block, but this is kind of hard procedure if you want to get xpath'es for LOTS of html elements. so that's why I want this kind of software to help in this routine.

• WPA Enterprise Wireless Bridge

  I live in college housing at a university with wifi available. unfortunately, my bedroom(where I'd like to place my PC) gets little to no reception. I'd like to place a router in the strongest spot and rebroadcast. I understand this can be done with DD-WRT/etc, but this particular network is WPA Enterprise with my own personal username/password. I can't find any concrete evidence that I can get my router to act as a repeater for this encryption. I don't currently have a router to test it on, otherwise this would be easy, I just don't want to buy a router if it will be worthless to me. Thanks for your help

What to do when you're faced with a problem that you can't solve quickly? Are there non-programming related activities akin to solving programming problems? I am a computer engineering graduate. I have studied programming since three years. I am good in coding and programming. I have been trying to compete in algorithmic competitions on sites such as topcoder,spoj since one and a half year, but I am still unable to solve problems other than too easy problems. I have learned from people that it takes practice to solve such problems. I try to solve those problems but sometimes I am unable to understand and even if I do understand I am unable to think of a good algorithm for solving it. Even if I solve I get Wrong answer and I am unable to figure out what is the problem with my code as it works on samples given on the sites but fails on test cases which they do not provide. I really want to solve those problems and become good in algorithms. I have read books for learning algorithms like Introduction to algorithms by CLRS,practicing programming questions. I have gone through some questions but they don't answer this question. I have seen the questions which are said duplicates but those questions focus on overall programming, but I am asking for algorithm related programming, basically for competing in programming which involve solving a problem statement then online judge will automatically evaluate it, such type of programming is quite different from the type of programming these questions discuss.

• Adding a CMS to an existing Magento shop

  I am working on a project for 3 niche stores built on magento (using magento's multi-store function) that each get roughly 50k unique visitors a day. The sites don't currently have a blog or forum or any social networking aspects. Would like to add a cms to each site that can be centrally run and would like it to take over the front end content from Magento. Also would like it to maintain an online blog/publication of sorts with videos, articles, and the like with privileges to edit the content given to a dozen or so people with different privileges. Want to add a forum to each site that is fairly robust and to possibly add some social networking aspects down the road, so extandability and available plugins/mods in each cms is important. Other than shared login between the forums,blog/publication and store, would like to be able to integrate some content from the forums and blog/publication into the store as well. After researching this a bit, I am inclined towards Drupal, but I haven't found any modules to integrate it with Magento. Also, since the blog content will be done by about a dozen nontechnical people, I want something that is very easy to work with. Lastly, since the site gets a good amount of traffic, speed and security are very important. What CMS would you recommend integrating in this context? Deciding between Drupal, Wordpress and Plone. • Why do some programmers think there is a contrast between theory and practice?

  Comparing software engineering with civil engineering, I was surprised to observe a different way of thinking: any civil engineer knows that if you want to build a small hut in the garden you can just get the materials and go build it whereas if you want to build a 10-storey house you need to do quite some maths to be sure that it won't fall apart. In contrast, speaking with some programmers or reading blogs or forums I often find a wide-spread opinion that can be formulated more or less as follows: theory and formal methods are for mathematicians / scientists while programming is more about getting things done. What is normally implied here is that programming is something very practical and that even though formal methods, mathematics, algorithm theory, clean / coherent programming languages, etc, may be interesting topics, they are often not needed if all one wants is to get things done. According to my experience, I would say that while you do not need much theory to put together a 100-line script (the hut), in order to develop a complex application (the 10-storey building) you need a structured design, well-defined methods, a good programming language, good text books where you can look up algorithms, etc. So IMO (the right amount of) theory is one of the tools for getting things done. So my question is why do some programmers think that there is a contrast between theory (formal methods) and practice (getting things done)? Is software engineering (building software) perceived by many as easy compared to, say, civil engineering (building houses)? Or are these two disciplines really different (apart from mission-critical software, software failure is much more acceptable than building failure)?

• How should I unbind and delete OpenAL buffers?

  I'm using OpenAL to play sounds. I'm trying to implement a fire-and-forget play function that takes a buffer ID and assigns it to a source from a pool I have previously allocated, and plays it. However, there is a problem with object lifetimes. In OpenGL, delete functions either automatically unbind things (e.g. textures), or automatically deletes the thing when it eventually is unbound (e.g. shaders) and so it's usually easy to manage deletion. However alDeleteBuffers instead simply fails with AL_INVALID_OPERATION if the buffer is still bound to a source. Is there an idiomatic way to "delete" OpenAL buffers that allows them to finish playing, and then automatically unbinds and really them? Do I need to tie buffer management more deeply into the source pool (e.g. deleting a buffer requires checking all the allocated sources also)? Similarly, is there an idiomatic way to unbind (but not delete) buffers when they are finished playing? It would be nice if, when I was looking for a free source, I only needed to see if a buffer was attached at all and not bother checking the source state. (I'm using C++, although approaches for C are also fine. Approaches assuming a GCd language and using finalizers are probably not applicable.)

• Dynamic/Adaptive RLE

  So, I'm developing a 2D, tile based game and a map maker thingy - all in Java. The problem is that recently I've been having some memory issues when about 4 maps are loaded. Each one of these maps are composed of 128x128 tiles and have 4 layers (for details and stuff). I already spent a good amount of time searching for solutions and the best thing I found was run-length enconding (RLE). It seems easy enough to use with static data, but is there a way to use it with data that is constantly changing, without a big drop in performance? In my maps, supposing I'm compressing the columns, I would have 128 rows, each with some amount of data (hopefully less than it would be without RLE). Whenever I change a tile, that whole row would have to be checked and I'm affraid that would slow down too much the production (and I'm in a somewhat tight schedule). Well, worst case scenario I work on each map individually, and save them using RLE, but it would be really nice if I could avoind that. EDIT: What I'm currently using to store the data for the tiles is a 2D array of HashMaps that use the layer as key and store the id of the tile in that position - like this: private HashMap< Integer, Integer [][]

• A good tool for browser automation/client-side Web scripting

  I'm interested in adopting a tool/scripting language to automate some daily tasks connected with fighting forum spammers. A brief overview of these tasks: analyze new registrations and posts on a phpBB forum, and delete or deactivate spammers using a website/community that collects such spam reports. Typically such automation is integrated into the phpBB installation itself, which certainly has its advantages. My approach has the advantage of independent operation, etc. One way to think about this is in terms of browser automation. I've used iOpus iMacros for Firefox (the free version) in the past to respond to individual spammers, but current attacks are highly distributed. My "logic" for pigeonholing spammers vs. nonspammers seems beyond the easy reach of the free version of iMacros. From a more technical perspective one can think about dispensing with the browser altogether and programming GET/POST requests directed to my forum and other Web-based resources. I'm familiar with some scripting languages like Ruby and Lua, but I could be persuaded that a compiled application is better suited for these tasks. However in my experience the dynamic flexibility of interpreted environments is very useful in prototyping and debugging the application logic. So I'm leaning in the direction of scripting languages. Among browsers I favor Firefox and Chrome. I use both Windows and Linux platforms, and if the tool can adapt to an Android platform, it would make a neat demonstration of skills, yes? • Delete file then run file at startup

  I'm running the music player Foobar2000 through Wine at startup. For some reason when I shutdown Ubuntu the Foobar2000 process is ended abnormally in Wine and when it runs next time I get an annoying "start in safe mode?" message. Not a huge problem, but I'd like it fixed. The safe mode message only appears if a file called "running" is present when Foobar2000 starts (if it isn't deleted when closed properly). So by deleting "running" then starting Foobar2000, the message doesn't appear. I thought it would be easy enough to enter this as a startup command, however it doesn't want to work. The command I am using is rm '/home/henry/.wine/drive_c/users/henry/Application Data/foobar2000/running';'/home/henry/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/foobar2000/foobar2000.exe' which works fine if I just run it from terminal, the file is deleted then foobar2000 runs. Does anyone know why this isn't working at startup? Also, will this run with a terminal visible? How can I make just the gui appear? Thanks

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Thanks heaps. • How to enlarge a .PDF document to better show it in a Kindle 6"?

  I have a kindle 6". The problem is that I often read pdf files that are technical, therefore, it doesn't get converted very well to kindle's native format (for example, code blocks get messed, and things like that). When I view the pdf page, it's very small to read easily, so I have to rotate the screen to a horizontal position in order to see it better, but my page get divided. But some documents would be easy to read in vertical position if I had the chance to enlarge the font size a little bit in a external pdf editor, therefore enabling the reading in the vertical orientation. Has anybody had the same situation? Is there a solution for that?

• Is ASP.NET MVC too much overhead for smaller projects?

  I will be honest I don't really know much about MVC other than the stuff you can read online in 5 minutes. Unfortunately this doesn't really tell me whether its suited to smaller projects or not. I also read this related question and its chosen answer, but the business perspective is not a concern in this case for me as I am the only one making it. The next answer proceeds to say why it is more flexible. Sure, that's great. But my question is again, if its an ideal choice for a small project. For example I would rather use winforms to make a simple mockup of a small desktop program than do it on WPF because of the overhead of custom styling. So I have a project that will essentially have about 6-8 pages that read excel files and user input use that to pull a bit of data from databases and output resulting excel files. I will be the only one working on this project. If I used webforms I would expect it to take no more than 2-3 weeks. Now I am 100% comfortable with webforms. And I know its easy to do a small project in webforms. But I have only heard good things about MVC so I am seriously considering it.
