• NAS4Free disk encryption and ZFS error

  I have installed a NAS4Free on a VM, and as recommended, i installed it on a 1GB virtual disk, and assigned another disk 500GB to this VM for file storage. I have created the disk, encrypted it, created a ZFS virtual disk, and then a ZFS storage pool. Everything was working. On every restart of this VM i needed to go on and mount the encrypted drive. Recently i upgraded the host machine, and now i cant mount or make it work. I have tried removing everything and setting up from scratch everything, with the exception of formating the disk, i have used an encrypted one without formating it. Does anybody have any suggestion on how can i at least get back my data, can i mount somehow the encrypted drive even in another utility, just need to get back the data that were on it.

• Does any know fix/cause of USB drives that lose connection

  I have been having significant problems trying to copy files to a USB drive (G0-Flex 1.5 tb) No matter what I use to try to copy the files (python code, Windows copy and paste or Drobo Copy utility) I ultimately get a failure. The failure is always some indication that the device is not ready or able to be written to. I am pretty sure the problem is that the drive is losing its connection. I have done everything I can find so far including setting the USB Root hub to never turn off the power, I updated some usb drivers etc. I have found references to this problem primarily with Win7-64 bit. I have also had USB connection problems with other devices- we kept losing a connection to our Bravo Disc Publisher when we went to Win7 and finally bought a newer model and have not had problems since. Any pointers about diagnosing and or understanding the problem would be appreciated.

  We have several users in the field with MacBooks. Because they're not always on the network, they save files locally to their notebooks. Normally I back things up by making quick copies to other media, but with the Macs they have the option to run Time Machine (and the way OS X is designed, they're heavily encouraged to use it.) Question; for maintaining Macs and data, how reliable and thorough is Time Machine for backup/restoration? Does it just back up the user's home directory, or can it restore the Mac if, for example, the drive fails? And are there options for "securing" the data like corporate backup software for Windows does, to encrypt the data on the time machine drive?

• Using an SSD with no AHCI [ICH7 base] - Windows 7 hangs frequently

  I have a Shuttle Intel G31 + ICH7 (base -- not M/R etc) system. I just bought an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb [VTX3-25SAT3-120G] which includes the Sandforce 2218 firmware. The ICH7 does not support AHCI. I understand that this can be a problem. What I don't understand, is if it's necessary to have the proper performance of this drive. I know that without AHCI I may get a limited read/write speed -- this is fine. What my concern is, is the constant freezing/hangs I'm getting with Windows 7 on any disk activity. The 'Highest Active Time' flip-flops from 0 to 100% every minute or so regardless of large or small files. EDIT: The threads/processes with the highest response time is the kernel. I've been reading about other people with Shuttle SG31G2s, and they seem to be using SSDs no problem. Is this the controller's fault? The fact that I do not have AHCI enabled? It makes sense to me that if this SSD requires AHCI features that it would cause Windows to hang, but I would like to fully determine my situation before returning things/reformatting. To initially have my drive recognise the SSD at all, I had to change the BIOS option to Force Gen II instead of Auto for the SATA controller. I then installed Windows with no problem. There were no errors in the event log related to disk usage, but watching the perfmon I could see the highest active time and the processes (usually pagefile.sys being written to, or chrome/firefox caching) which was correlated to the hanging. So now what I need answered is: should I be returning this SSD and getting one with a different controller, or returning the SSD all-together as it will never work out and I will continue to get these hangs. • Problem installing Cardbus/PCMCIA drivers (USB 2.0 2-port)

  I obtained the drivers from the manufacturer for my HT-Link NEC USB 2.0 2-port Cardbus card. When I plugged in the card before I got the drivers, 3 new entries showed up in the Device Manager - two "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller." With the card plugged in, I uninstalled those two drivers. I then removed the card. I copied the new drivers to c:\windows\system32\drivers and the .inf file to c:\windows\inf. I also copied the drivers & inf to a new directory called c:\windows\drivers\ousb2. I reinserted the card. Windows automatically installed the same drivers as before. I selected 'update driver' on the "NEC PCI to USB..." entry and didn't see any other options. I then selected 'have disk' and pointed to c:\windows\drivers\ousb2 and got a message "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I then selected 'update driver' on the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB...," and manually selected "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Windows then automatically found a USB root hub, and I manually selected "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Now there are two sections in the Device Manager titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." I plugged in my external USB hard disk adapter, and "USB Mass Storage Device" was added to the first set. Here's how it looks (w/drivers from the properties): [Universal Serial Bus controllers] Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (6/1/2002 5.1.2600.0) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) USB Mass Storage Device USB Root Hub (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) (5 more USB Root Hubs - same driver) [Universal Serial Bus controllers] USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) USB 2.0 Root Hub Device (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) When I unplug the card the two "NEC PCI to USB..." entries in the first set disappear, and the whole second set disappears. (I unplugged the hard disk adapter first...) The hard disk adapter still doesn't work in that Cardbus card with the new drivers. I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

• Recovering portion(s) of file with CRC (cyclic redundancy check) errors in Robocopy

  Is it possible to recover portions of files with CRC errors? If so, how? I have a partially damaged hard drive (2.5" SATA) that I have partially recovered using Spinrite 6.0 (took 2 weeks to run!). I have been successful in getting many of the files off of the drive using Robocopy . /V /S /E /COPY:DAT /R:1 /W:0, but some of the files get to +/- 90% in Robocopy and then fail with a CRC Data Error (cyclic redundancy check). I am wondering if it is possible to recover the first 90% of the file and try to recover it in a text editor. 1.0% ... 91.0% 91.1% 2010/06/14 18:21:13 ERROR 23 (0x00000017) Copying File F:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mailbox Folder.dbx Data error (cyclic redundancy check). • Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Can't Shut Down computer with windows 8 Release Preview

  I downloaded Release Preview and installed it. I have a problem when I shut down the computer. After I press windows key + I Power Shut Down, a box pops up titled "Winlogon.exe - No Disk. Then under that is the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into Drive G". After hitting the retry button a couple of different times the screen finally goes dark. When I was going to turn it back on, I noticed the Power Button was still list. The only way to do a complete Shutdown is to hold in the power button directly. How do I fix this problem?

• What is Google Docs' SLA?

  Hi all, I am evaluating online storage and for me, that means either Amazon S3 or Google Docs. Amazon very clearly posts there reliability and SLA: http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#protecting Their rates are obviously higher than Google's, but it is really hard to compare without having an SLA. Does anyone know what Google's commitment is for reliability? Is it 99.99% for data, is there anyway to make that more durable? I have to ask too, wouldn't google docs at least be inheritently more reliable than a hard drive? Thanks, Walter

• HP ML115 with P400 Smart Array Controller

  Hi, I have a HP ML115 server I have installed a HP P400 Smart Array Controller card, I also have 4 x 1TB Samsung Hard drives. I'm unable to get the the controller to detect the hard drives, I have changed the drives to SATA 1.5G without luck, I have also tried connecting a single 80GB Maxtor drive without luck The controller shows up just after boot and tries to initialize, The controller does not show up in the POST prompt, although I can see the controller when booting off a ACU CD THe controller firmware is a little old v4.12 but I have no way to update it. Any ideas on how I can get this going?

• Windows does not detect any modems anymore[HSPA]

  By an accident i uninstalled my Connect manager (ZTE). but when i re-install it the virtual CD drive is detected but it does not detect the drivers. When i direct to the folder containing the relevant drivers(.sys files) still it doesnt detect. Then i tried a modem of a different brand Huawei the same problem presists As i understand it is not a device(brand) driver specific issue as it does not detect modem(dongles) of any brand. when i plugged in a different USB device(a pen drive) the driver is detected and it works perfectly. Please help me with the issue i have tried system restore but it doesnt work. I want a repair that works without re-installing windows [Edit] I tried Karan's suggested method with usboblivion it didnt work. now im sure that the issue does not deal with the registry

• Auto-detect proxy settings on network

  I am having problems trying to run web browser software on the local network through the proxy. When running off the profile drive which is on a network share, the system is unable to auto-detect proxy settings. When running off the local C drive, the browsers are able to correctly autodetect the settings. The error from the browser is about it being unable to fetch the proxy configuration file. Is this some form of authentication preventing it retreiving the settings when running of the network location? PS. Would this be better off on superuser?

• easy Switching to open folders on a mac

  How do I easily switch to an open folder on a mac? In windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all i need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar in mac, and when i have a lot of folders opened, ie, lots of finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way i'm doing it is, i put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first i have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen i have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one i want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a mac? :(

• Can't write to file - 'Operation not permitted' WITH sudo

  I am having trouble writing to a few files on an external HD. I am using it to store media files as well as my time machine backup. The drive is formatted as HFS+ Journaled, and other files on the drive can be written successfully. Additionally, the time machine backup is working perfectly. Even with sudo I can't modify it at all.

Is there any single command or method to perform a manual, one-time, full backup dump to another destination drive? I ask since I'm investigating the possibility of introducing rotating external hard-drive backups for offsite storage and I want to leverage our existing backup strategies wherever possible. Ideally, a full backup restore should be achievable from only any one of these offsite backup discs.

• ADMIN$ and other shares not working remotely on XP machines

  I'm trying to use ADMT to migrate several XP machines to a new domain and the utility (nor command line) is able to access the admin$ share or any drive share. I've added the required registry key (HKCurrent\Services\LanMan\Param) for both servers and workstation admin sharing, rebooted the PC and still am unable to access it. How can I access the admin share on these PCs? If it helps, this machine used to have McAfee installed, and the Windows firewall enabled. I stoppped both of them and the machine is still not allowing me to access it remotely by a drive$ share.

• 3ware RAID in Windows 7

  Just moved a 3ware 9500S-8 raid card and a few drives from my linux box into my win7 box. Windows Updates picked up the 3ware driver and installed it. After a reboot I checked Disk Management and it shows the array as one solid drive with the correct size. The only issue is that its not assigned a drive letter and when I right click on it my only option is to Convert to Dynamic Disk... From what I've read this is not something I want to do. What are my options?

• Cannot boot to HDD or Optical when Motherboard in AHCI mode

  I have an Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard and am trying to swap over to AHCI mode. I have an existing Windows 7 installation which was installed under IDE mode. I have set the msahci registry setting to 0. When I try to boot in AHCI mode I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have tried booting with my Win 7 DVD in the optical drive. There is 1 SSD (System), 1 HDD (Data) and 2 optical drives connected via SATA If I switch back to IDE mode everything boots fine, either from the SSD or from a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Why can't I use AHCI mode?

• Upgrade to Genuine Windows 8 Pro from non genuine Windows 7

  I have a computer with non-genuine windows 7 (cracked with windows loader). I was thinking of buying / upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. I ran Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe and was said that I can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Can I perform a clean upgrade (format and install) from my current windows 7 to windows 8? In future, in order to re-install Windows 8 do I need to re-install the non-genuine Windows 7 and install on top of it? If my hard disk crash, or I want to install on a new hard disk (clean install), do I need to install windows 7 again before upgrading to Windows 8? If I don't like Windows 8, can I downgrade to Windows 7 genuine?

Once you do, you are presented with two options: download it from HP's server or locate the file locally on your hard disk. In the past, I have had success with downloading it from HP's server. • Possible to restore Windows Partition disk image?

  I have a machine that was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I used the Disks program in Ubuntu to make a disk image of my windows partition which I saved on an external disk. I then reformatted the main drive and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I created a spare partition and restored that Windows disk image to that partition. Is it possible to boot Windows? I have run boot-repair and Grub now gives me both Ubuntu and Windows options but when I select Windows I get only a black screen with blinking cursor. I ran a Windows recovery disk and ran startup repair but still no luck. I also tried running lilo inside Ubuntu but still can't boot Windows. Any other ideas? PS, I'm on a Netbook with no DVD drive so I can't just reinstall Windows though if that is my only option I can borrow a DVD eventually.

  As the title says, I'm trying to find how to run adb commands through a pre-written script (such as how .bat and .vbs files work) so I can make a semi automatic program to pull some files from my android phone whenever I click on the launch.bat which launches a line of program to go through the phone and find certain files. I know the script line: adb pull /data/data/kik.android/databases/ %drive%\All\Database This copies all the files in this specific database into the flash drive's folder "Database" under the "All" folder. But, how could i make it so that the adb program looks through the phone and finds other files, and how could i pull the specific files, rather than pulling the entire folder?

• !! 0xc01a00d !! aka Vista won't boot

  Answer: Parts of the hard drive are corrupted. All of my user's code was checked in, so I'm just going to format the box. One of my users has an HP DV5-1235dx laptop running Windows Vista Professional x64. Last night, our WSUS server pushed out a few updates including "Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB960859)". When we try to boot the laptop today, a black screen with white text comes up displaying: xxx/169894 (something) Where xxx increments rapidly and something is some dll or registry key. Eventually that stops and the screen displays !! 0xc01a00d !! 35566/169894 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedDat...) No other computers that received this update are displaying the same error. So far I've tried running CHKDSK off of HBCD. It repaired a thing or two, but the computer still doesn't boot. I tried repairing the Windows install from the Vista CD, but I get a black screen with white text displaying something along the lines of: 0 No Emulation System Type 00 1 No Emulation System Type 00 Select one of the above Booting in Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work. Booting in Safe Mode freezes at Loading Windows Files [snip] Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys Please wait... My next step is trying to boot Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to run rstrui.exe. While I do that, does anybody have any guidance? Edit: Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not work. See Booting in Safe Mode above. Edit 2: I managed to boot from the Vista DVD. I ran the system repair, and now I get a black screen with white text saying: !! 0xc0000034 !! 290/169894 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms) Edit 3: I ran the system repair again, and it attempted to repair my hard drive. It failed. • Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?
