• Floating point computer - Trouble with getting back correct results

  Having trouble with a challenge. Let's say I have a theoretical, base 10, floating point calculator with the following characteristics Only 3 digits for mantissa 1 digit for exponent Sign for mantissa and exponent How would this machine compute the following? 300 + \sum_{i=1}^{100} 0.2 The correct result is 320. The machine's result is 300. But why? Can't get where the 20 goes goes missing... Thanks for your time.

  Let's assume the following: I have an IIS web site set up IIS is configured to use Digest authentication I'm running an ASP.NET page The page has a code-behing assembly that overrides Page_Load When a user navigates to that page, I get a security prompt for the username and password. If the username and password are invalid (i.e. incorrect password) is there a way for the called page, in Page_Load to know, or does IIS handle this and return the 401 before the ASP.NET engine ever gets around to resolving the actual Page class that will get executed?

  Let's say I have a thread pool containing X items, and a given task employs Y of these items (where Y is much smaller than X). I want to wait for all of the threads of a given task (Y items) to finish, not the entire thread pool. If the thread pool's execute() method returned a reference to the employed thread I could simply join() to each of these Y threads, but it doesn't. Does anyone know of an elegant way to accomplish this? Thanks.

If the Red's run out, it should begin with the first one again. Example: let's say there are only two Red's: Blue1 Blue2 Blue3 Red1 Blue4 Blue5 Blue6 Red2 Blue7 Blue8 Blue9 Red1 ... ... If the Blue's run out, the Red's should append until they run out too.   I get a St9bad_alloc error which I'm unable to debug. I tried reducing the size of the data structure to eliminate the possibility that I might be running out of memory but that doesn't seem to be the case.
