3D physics engine for accurate collision handling on desktop/laptop computers (non-console)

What are your suggestions for a physics engine that satisfies the following criteria? Capable of calculating collisions between multiple concave mesh-based colliders Handles many collisions going on at once (for instance one mesh being wedged between two others, which themselves may be wedged between two meshes) Does not allow for collider passthrough, even at high speeds. For instance, if I am applying force to a programmatically hinged object that makes it spin, I do not want it to pass through another rigidbody that it collides with while spinning. I have this problem using PhysX As implied before, reacts well to hinged objects, preferably has its own implementation of a hinge, but I am willing to program my own. The important part is that it has some sort of interface that guarantees accurate collision tracking even when dealing with these things Platform independent -- runs on mac as well as PC, also not tied down to specific graphics cards I think that's the best way to explain what I am looking for. Basically, I need SUPER reliable collisions. Something that can't be accomplished with a simple ray casting approach that sends a ray from the last position of the object to the current position (as this object may be potentially large and colliding with small objects via rotation) Bonus points for also including an OPEN SOURCE engine.

Function calls to calls in windows api

I am a beginner, and learning C, I find it hard to grasp the whole programming concept. so hopefully this would help to clear up some things along the way. When programming in windows, which is my aim for the time being, it is really hard for me to understand how windows communicate with the programs that run on it. A question i have been pondering about is how when you incorporate a function call which is in another memory location on the disk or memory(not a function you yourself wrote and is included in the compilation), especially the windows API, does the compiler know where the function location is so when the program is run it can call that function? For example, a very simple program that displays a window which reads hello world. You would have to call windows API functions to achieve such features as creating the window, its size, colors and so on... So basically what I am struggling to grasp is how the programs I write communicate with the platform, framework they are run on(generally windows for Windows API). Apart from clarification on this one above, i would love a resource that explains this concept further. Thanks for your time!

Estimate of Hits / Visits / Uniques in order to fall within a given Alexa Tier?

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone could offer up rough estimates that could tell me how many hits a day move you into a given Alexa rank ? Top 5,000 Top 10,000 Top 50,000 Top 100,000 Top 500,000 Top 1,000,000 I know this is incredibly subjective and thus the broad brush strokes with the number ranges... BUT I've got a site currently ranked just over 1.2M worldwide and over 500k in the USA (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/fstr.net) Pretty cool for something hand-built on weekends (pat self on back) I was applying to an ad-platform and was told that their program doesn't accept webmasters who have an Alexa rank of greater than 100,000. (Time to take back that pat on the back I guess). I know that my hits in the last 30 days are somewhere on the order of 15,000 uniques and 20,000 pageviews. So I'm wondering how much harder do I have to work to achieve my next "goals"? I'd like to break into the top million, then re-evaluate from there. It'd be nice to know what those targets translate into (very roughly of course). I imagine that alexa ranks and tiers become very much exponential as you move up the ranks, but even hearing annecdotal evidence from other webmasters would be really useful to me. (ie: I have a site that is ranked X and it got Y hits in the last 30 days) Thanks :) - Alex

How to deal with the need to know multiple programming languages? When to stop learning new languages?

I am a relatively young programmer. I am 23 and I have been programming professionally for about 5 years. As most programmers I started with C, learned some x86 assembly for fun and then I found C++ which turned out to be my greatest passion in the programming world. Programming with C and C++ forces you to learn platform specific APIs, libs and frameworks all of each requires constant study and experimentation. After some time I had to move on to Java and C# as the demand on my region is basically for these languages. With these languages I entered the world of web development and then I had to learn javascript. Developing for the .NET Framework was exciting at first but I constantly felt as I was getting tied up by Microsoft (and of course the .NET Framework was driving me away from Linux). For desktop development I could do pretty much everything I did with .NET using C++ with Qt but for web development I had to look for an alternative. Quickly I found Django and then I proceeded to learn Python so I could use Django. Nowadays I am learning iOS development with Objective-C. So far it was pretty much easy to learn all these languages (C++ trained me well) but I am worried that someday I won't be able to keep track of them all. Just to clarify. The only languages I learned cause I had to were C# and Java. All of the others I learned for fun, because I love programming and learning new things. Also I like to keep my skills sharp on desktop, web and mobile development. My question is: How do you keep track of multiple programming languages? (I mean, keep track of changes to these languages and keep your skills sharp) and: Is there such a thing as enough programming languages?

With the outcome of the Oracle vs Google trial, does that mean Mono is now safe from Microsoft [closed]

According to the an article on ArsTechnica the judge of the case ruled that APIs are not patent-able. He referred to the structure of modules/methods/classes/functions as being like libraries/books/chapters. To patent an API would be putting a patent on thought itself. It's the internal implementations that really matter. With that in mind, Mono (C# clone for Linux/Mac) has always been viewed tentatively because, even though C# and the CLI are ECMA standards, Microsoft holds a patent on the technology. Microsoft holds a covenant not to sue open source developers based on their patents but has maintained the ability to pull the plug on the Mono development team if they felt the project was a threat. With the recent ruling, is Mono finally out of the woods. A firm precedent has been established that patents can't be applied to APIs. From what I understand, none of the Mono implementation is copied verbatim, only the API structure and functionality. It's a topic I have been personally interested in for years now as I have spent a lot of time developing cross-platform C# libraries in MonoDevelop. I acknowledge that this is a controversial topic, if you have opinions that's what commenting is for. Try to keep the answers factual and based on established sources.

install android sdk on kubuntu

I'm trying to follow the instructions for installing the android sdk found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html After i've unpackaged and i run the android program under tools, I don't get all the options that I'm supposed to. The only 2 folders that show up are tools, and extras. Under tools, it only shows the "Android SDK Tools" with the status "Installed". Under the "extas" folder, I have nothing. I've made sure that my http: proxy settings are correct. And I've checked the logs. there are no errors. According to the android developer site, I'm supposed to install the SDK platform tools. has anyone tried this on ubuntu? I also checked and saw others were instructed to do an apt-get install ia32-libs but it failed for me. Besides which, I am running the 32bit os... so I don't think i would need to install that... ?? I've also tried following the instructions found here: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php/772 But... I can't seem to add the personal archive nilarimogard without getting an error message. when i attempt: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 I get the message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/add-apt-repository", line 125, in ppa_info = get_ppa_info_from_lp(user, ppa_name) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py", line 80, in get_ppa_info_from_lp curl.perform() pycurl.error: (7, "couldn't connect to host") root@jll:/home/me/Documents# any suggestions? Software development company business plan

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question, so please forward me to the right place. I have about 10 years professional experience as software developer. Mostly on the Java platform doing server side programs. I have picked up a bit of Linux skills on the way as well. I know HTML and Javascript, so I can make a website that would not be too ugly, but I am not going to win any prizes with it. In fact I think I am pretty terrible in the user interface department. My initial plan is to do Android development. I read a few Android books and tried making a few apps. Since it is Java based I think I got the technical side down. Lately I have been thinking about iphone and Mac development, because of the relevant app store/development programs. The trouble is I don't know Objective C. As a side question, how long would it take me to become proficient in Objective C? Considering that I am working on my own and could hire somebody to help me for a short time for low wages if necessary what are my options? What are the pro and cons of the development programs app stores of Android and Apple? Which development/app stores are out there beside the ones I mentioned? Do you think it is necessary to find funds to get me started or should I just use my savings? If you have positive/negative experiences in a similar situations can you please share them? Can i change the order of these OpenGL / Win32 calls?

I've been adapting the NeHe ogl/win32 code to be more object orientated and I don't like the way some of the calls are structured. The example has the following pseudo structure: Register window class Change display settings with a DEVMODE Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Resize the GL scene Init GL The points in bold are what I want to move into a rendering class (the rest are what I see being pure win32 calls) but I'm not sure if I can call them after the win32 calls. Essentially what I'm aiming for is to encapsulate the Win32 calls into a Platform::Initiate() type method and the rest into a sort of Renderer::Initiate() method. So my question essentially boils down to: "Would OpenGL allow these methods to be called in this order?" Register window class Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Change display settings with a DEVMODE Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Resize the GL scene Init GL (obviously passing through the appropriate window handles and device contexts.) Relationship between SOA and OOA

Thomas Erl defines SOA as follows in his site: Service-oriented computing represents a new generation distributed computing platform. As such, it encompasses many things, including its own design paradigm and design principles, design pattern catalogs, pattern languages, a distinct architectural model, and related concepts, technologies, and frameworks. This definitely sounds like a whole new category which is parallel to object orientation. Almost one in which you would expect an entirely new language to exist for. Like procedural C and object oriented C#. Here is my understanding: In real life, we don't have entirely new language for SOA. And most application which have SOA architecture have an object oriented design underneath it. SOA is a "strategy" to make the entire application/service distributed and reliable. SOA needs OOPS working underneath it. Is this correct? Where does SOA (if at all it does) fit in with object oriented programming practices? Edit: I have learnt through answers that OOA and SOA work with each other and cannot be compared (in a "which is better" way). I have changed the title to "Relationship between SOA and OOA" rather than "comparison".

Migration a database from 32bit to 64bit

Database migrations from an 32bit environment to an 64bit environment keeping the same platform architecture (e.g. moving an Oracle 10.2.0.5 database from MS Windows XP 32bit to MS Windows Server 2003 64bit) does not happen that often anymore. But still we see them getting done. And there are a few things to note when doing such a move. First of all the important question is:Will you upgrade your database as part of this move - Yes or No? If you say "Yes" then you are almost done with that topic as we will take care of that bitnes move during the upgrade. The only thing you have to take care is OLAP in case you are using OLAP Option with Analytic Workspaces (AW) by yourself. Those store data in Binary LOBs - and in order to move AWs from 32bit to 64bit you have to export your AWs prior to the move - and import them later on. People who don't use OLAP don't have to take care on this. But if you say "No" (meaning: no upgrade actions involved - you keep your database version) then you have to make sure to invalidate all packages and stored code in the database before you shutdown your database in the 32bit environment and prior to moving it over. And the same rule as above for OLAP applies once you use the OLAP Option. In the source environment: startup upgrade; -- [or startup migrate; -- for Oracle 9i] @?/rdbms/admin/utlirp.sqlshutdown immediate In the destination environment: startup upgrade @?/olap/admin/xumuts.plb --Only if OLAP Option is installed@?/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql The script utlirp.sql will invalidate all packages and stored code, utlrp.sql will recompile - and xumuts.plb will rebuild the OLAP Analytic Workspaces in case you have the OLAP Option installed.

Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again.
