  • How can I switch between fglrx and ati drivers?

    Hi there, How can I switch between fglrx and ati (open source) drivers without uninstalling fglrx? The thing is I'm using FGLRX on a daily basis, because it's better for movies--OS driver displays annoying horizontal line while playing movies. FGLRX also does this, but it's less visible. That's only disadvantage of OS driver. When I want to plug in external monitor with different resolution than my laptop's LCD I have to use open source driver, because FGLRX can't display two different resolutions at the same time. I can uninstall FGLRX, but it's rather inconvenient to do this all the time. I've noticed that when I'm using FGLRX there is xorg.conf file and when I uninstall it, then the file is missing. So my question is how to switch between them? It'll be perfect if I could do this without restarting my computer either. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, laptop/netbook MSI U250.

  • Difference left/right super button

    When I press my left super key the gnome shell appears and when I press the right super key it does not. Moreover pressing right super + T does open a terminal at once, but when using left super I have to press the t twice, when I press the t only once it is similar to just pressing the t without holding super left. This last point also occurs with other shortcuts that I defined (like super+L, super+E), but not with super+up/down/left/right. What I want is to press either super key to get the gnome shell and to use either super key in combination with T to open a terminal immediately (and similar with other shortcuts). I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the gnome 3 shell.

  • How can I view an R32G32B32 texture?

    I have a texture with R32G32B32 floats. I create this texture in-program on D3D11, using DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32_FLOAT. Now I need to see the texture data for debug purposes, but it will not save to anything but dds, showing the error in debug output, "Can't find matching WIC format, please save this file to a DDS". So, I write it to DDS but I can't open it now! The DirectX texture tool says "An error occurred trying to open that file". I know the texture is working because I can read it in the GPU and the colors seem correct. How can I view an R32G32B32 texture in an image viewer?

  • How to play VOB files that were inside a DVD disc?

    I just downloaded a DVD which is for a movie. After uncompressing the DVD file I see .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files. If I open the first .VOB file it shows me the DVD menu but I can't interact with it. So, my question is... is Totem able to play those kind of files? If so, how can I achieve that? What other app could I use in order to reproduce those files? Edit Using VLC didn't work neither. I forgot to mention I have already tried that. Let me rephrase: if I open the first video file it shows the DVD menu, BUT I can't interact with it.

  • Ubuntu 12.10 64bit fresh install, wireless issue!

    Just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64bit on my laptop, run the update manager, restarted and suddenly I can't use my wifi anymore. Ubuntu software center installed automatically the wifi additional driver as you can see in my screenshot. If I mark the option "Do not use the device" and apply changes, restarting Ubuntu my wifi is back and I can use it. If I run iwconfig my terminal is showing this Now if I use Ubuntu for more than 20 minutes surfing the web my wifi it keeps to be connected but I don't receive any signal from it. Any page I try to open it simply don't open (just waiting icon). If I disconnect my wifi and connect it again, same issue, it doesn't work. The only way to make it work again is to restart Ubuntu. And the same story it happens again after aprox. 20, 30 minutes.   • BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

    If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Installation and Deployment: 1.       SQL Server: a.       Register the CLR assembly with .NET (CLR) code b.      Install the MSMQ Services 2.       BizTalk Server: a.       Install the MSMQ Services b.      Create the MSMQ queue c.       Create the WCF-NetMsmq receive port. Creating the MSMQ queue 1.       Start / Administrative Tools / Computer Management, on the left pane open the “Services and Applications”, open the “Message Queuing”, and open the “Private Queues”. 2.       Right-click the “Private Queues”; choose New; choose “Private Queue”. 3.       Type the Queue name as ’myapp.myqueue'; check the “Transactional” option. Creating the WCF-NetMsmq receive port I will not go through this step in all details. It is straightforward. URI for this receive location should be 'net.msmq://localhost/private/myapp.myqueue'. Notes ·         The biggest problem is usually on the step the “Registering the CLR assembly”. It is hard to predict where are the assemblies from the assembly list, what version should be used, x86 or x64. It is pity of such “rude” integration of the SQL with .NET. ·         In couple cases the new WCF-NetMsmq port was not able to work with the queue. Try to replace the WCF- NetMsmq port with the WCF-Custom port with netMsmqBinding. It was working fine for me. ·         To test how messages go through the queue you can turn on the Journal /Enabled option for the queue. I used the QueueExplorer utility to look to the messages in Journal. The Computer Management can also show the messages but it shows only small part of the message body and in the weird format. The QueueExplorer can do the better job; it shows the whole body and Xml messages are in good color format.

  • Building a plug-in for Windows Live Writer

    This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going to create a plug-in that generates a twitter message with your blog post name and a TinyUrl link to the blog post.  It will do all of this automatically after you publish your post. Once, we have a new projected created. We need to setup the references. Add a reference to the WindowsLive.Writer.Api.dll located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\ folder, if you are using X64 version of Windows. You will also need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms System.Web from the .NET tab as well. Once that is complete, add your “using” statements so that it looks like whats shown below: Live Writer Plug-In "Using" using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using WindowsLive.Writer.Api; using System.Web; Now, we are going to setup some build events to make it easier to test our custom class. Go into the Properties of your project and select Build Events, click edit the Post-build and copy/paste the following line: XCOPY /D /Y /R "$(TargetPath)" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins\" Your screen should look like the one pictured below: Next, we are going to launch an external program on debug. Click the debug tab and enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\WindowsLiveWriter.exe Your screen should look like the one pictured below:   Now we have a blank project and we need to add some code. We start with adding the attributes for the Live Writer Plugin. Before we get started creating the Attributes, we need to create a GUID. This GUID will uniquely identity our plug-in. So, to create a GUID follow the steps in VS2008/2010.     Hi Guys, few days back I needed to install few DLL  assemblies to GAC, since I hardly knew about this topic, so googled on the internet and here is what I learned; There is a utility named ‘gacutil.exe’ which is delivered with Visual studio and .NET framework ( search in your PC for gacutil.exe) or you can also download  from internet. Before installing the DLL to GAC , ensure that the DLL you want to install has a strong name. To assign a strong name follow these steps::   1) Open the visual studio and open your C# project 2) Right click on the project/Solution and click on properties. 3) Click on the ‘Signing’ tab 4) Select the check box Sign the assembly and select a strong key file . 5) You can also create a new key file by selecting new, click on new to create a key file, provide the name of the file and password 6) Now build your solution, the dll file generated has a strong name.

    All, Here's an interesting problem. I followed instructions provided online for installing Loki Games' Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (see http://www.swanson.ukfsn.org/loki/ and http://wtanaka.com/node/7641) and got it installed and patched to the latest version. However, every time I start it regardless whether the pulseaudio is running, I get the following error: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/Loki_Compat/ /usr/local/lib/Loki_Compat/ld-linux.so.2 /usr/local/games/Heroes3/heroes3.dynamic ALSA lib conf.c:3314:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default Couldn't open audio: My first soundcard is HDMI output and my second one is the actual soundcard (HP DM1 running 12.04 64-bit with latest updates). I did set up /etc/asound.conf as follows: asound.conf pcm.!default { type hw card 1 } ctl.!default { type hw card 1 } So, the default soundcard should work ok. Between Shadowgrounds that also stopped working and this it appears a there may be some unfinished business/regressions in 32-bit support on 64-bit systems in 12.04. Any thoughts?

    I have been looking around for resources that discuss about mentors, including questions in the stackexchange network. I see that the general response has been to join open source projects and/or check out local user groups if there exists any. Are we sure that joining open source project can get me a mentor? It can grab eyeballs, yes, if the project is exciting enough but a mentor? I am not so sure. What do you guys think?   • Trouble signing Code of Conduct

    So I've spent quite some time trying to sign this code of conduct and am on the verge of abandoning it. Got right to the sign the txt file stage https://launchpad.net/codeofconduct/1.1/+sign but now I get an error and am just tired of fighting with Ubuntu. It has to do with the clearsign thing in the terminal.   • Installed Ubuntu In a low Specs PC and it is too slow, even with LXDE

    I'm new with Linux and started with Ubuntu 11.10, I installed it in my PC (Core2Duo 2Ghz, 512Mb Ram DDR2, integrated video in Motherboard), I know the requirements for Unity are 1Gb Ram so I decided to download a Desktop environment more lightweight, so I Installed LXDE, it loads very fast, compared to the 3.5 min from login screen to open desktop in Unity, but it freezes every time I open a single program, I can't even navigate in Internet, it freezes, sometimes for a pair of minutes and the graph at bottom right is all green as if iyt were using 100% CPU, it happens with every program. As additional data it takes 3+ min to get from boot system selection screen to Login screen and 3.5 Min more to get into Ubuntu with Unity, with LXDE it turns to 30 secs aproximately. Is Ubuntu + LXDE Desktop Environment Package = Lubuntu? or should I download Lubuntu directly instead? I installed some other desktop environments, as Gnome but it doesn't log in, the screen just turns grey. Should I get an older Ubuntu version? I'm thinking about uninstalling Ubuntu but I'll try to deplete the options, thanks for your support.

  • Encrypting and decrypting single file with master password and passphrase

    Last night my system shutdown unexpectedly and when i restart it, it gave me superblock error. will then i fixed a little but. i was able to retrive my encrypted files which i encrypted my pgp public key but i was not able to retrive my private key or public key now i have ecrypted file which cannot be open because i have lost my private key. is there any way that i can encrypt my file by providing only master password and passphrase and no physical key or private key and when i am on another computer i can easily open it my same master password and passphrase. She complained, though, that she does not want to use Libre Office and is willing to use Microsoft Office instead. I was like, ok, then. Then, she asked: - Libre office is the default, right? - Right. - So, if someone gives me a document, by default it will open on Libre Office. Can you make it open on Microsoft Office by default instead? So, even if I get it working via Wine, can I do what she requested or is it an impossible task?

  • Can't boot freshly burned Ubuntu cd

    So I just burned a Ubuntu 12.04.1 powerpc .iso on a cd for my iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and it won't even recognize the cd. I burned it on my dad's Windows 7 laptop as the process is way easier (just 2 clicks). Mac OS X 10.4.11 gives me an error when it starts and when the CD is in saying "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". What's funny is that I burned a Ubuntu Minimal .iso on a CD and it would totally read that and even boot it though it gave me some errors afterwards and I couldn't install. I even tried going into openfirmware and hitting boot cd:,\tbxi but I get the error "Warning sector size mismatch can't OPEN cd:,\tbxi Can't open device or file" Was there something wrong with the .iso I burned? Mac OS X 10.4.11 won't even mount that .iso it tells me that the HFS file system is corrupt or something, but I know the .iso doesn't contain HFS file system. Any help? I downloaded the .iso from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso
