• lubuntu issues with desktop directory

  My lubuntu 12.04 is upgraded from the 11.10 version and I'm a Chinese user. What surprises me is that the directory shown on the initial screen is always changing! recently It seems to be mapped with the directory called w in my home directory(~). However when using pcmanfm to open the directory it usually shows odd string as to the name of the folder that cannot be print, which I think may be some Chinese characters.The directory also sometimes fails to appear in the window appeared first when logged in. I know the lxde has no conception of the shown folder and I think the lubuntu team has done some optimization. Can someone tell me what's happening?Thanks in advance.

• How to change Shift + <Keypad Key> behavior ?

  I am used to use the numeric keypad for navigation (e.g. : [KP7] - Start, [KP1] - End, [KP4] - Left, etc... ). I am also used to use it for selection (e.g. : Shift+[KP7] - Select from cursor position to beginning of line, Shift+[KP1] - Select from cursor position to end of line, etc...) With the keyboard configuration installed with Ubuntu, though, Shift+[KP7] prints the character "7", Shift+[KP1] prints "1", etc... How can I change this so that Shift+[KP-key] is not mapped to [key], but to Shift+[KP-key] ?

• Map function+backspace to delete

  I'm used to Apple laptops, on which Function + Backspace is mapped to Delete. I'm also okay with Shift + Backspace. Is there a way to obtain this? Note, I'm using Xmonad and have some keyboard modifications set up with xmodmap but have very little understanding of how it works. I've tried xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace KP_Delete BackSpace BackSpace", which works in some applications but is ignored by my terminal. I've seen this question but it seems KDE-specific. I would prefer not to have to use some GUI.

• Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

  I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX

• can you have too many dto/bo - mapping method

  I have a windows service, 2 web services and a web interface that need to follow the same path (data wise). So I came up with two ways of creating my solution. My concern is the fact that the UI/WS/etc will have their own kind of DTO (let's say the model in ASP.Net MVC) that should be mapped to a DTO so the SL can then map it to a BO then mapping it to the proper EF6 DTO so that I can save it in a database. So I'm thinking of doing it this way to remove one level of mapping. Which one should I take? Or is there a 3rd solution?

• Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts when virtualising OS X

  Seriously, I have no idea why this took me so long to actually sort out.So in Windows 8 you have new keyboard shortcuts for accessing search (Win+Q), charms (Win+C), settings (Win+I), etc. Problem is that some of those collide with standard OS X mapping - for example Win+Q will close down VMware, Win+C will issue copy, etc.You can add additional mappings into VMware. Use the Preferences panel to do that. Here you can see that I've mapped Win+Shift+C to Win+C. (OK, that assumes you use a Windows keyboard with a Mac, like I do. If you use a Mac keyboard, you're mapping Apple+Shift+C to Win+C.)

  I have view, for example GameView which extends SurfaceView . I have integrated Box2D physics in GameView. I have two widths , GameView width, height and Box2D physics world width ,height. I need to get the position of box2d world with the GameView co-ordinates. For example, Total width of screen = 240 Total height of screen = 320 Screen points needed to be mapped onto box2d co-ordinates (x,y) = 127, 139 For this i need to get the max width and height of the Box2d physics world. Is there is any way to get the max width and height of Box2d world. or Can i limit the width and height of box2d world within the screen resolution.

• Keep user and user profile in different tables?

  I have seen in a couple of projects that developers prefer to keep essential user info in one table (email/login, password hash, screen name) and rest of the non essential user profile in another (creation date, country, etc). By non-essential I mean that this data is needed only occasionally. Obvious benefit is that if you are using ORM querying less fields is obviously good. But then you can have two entities mapped to same table and this will save you from querying stuff you don't need (while being more convenient). Does anybody know any other advantage of keeping these things in two tables?

  I want to make some simple 2D game on iOS to familiarize myself with OpenGL ES. I started with Ray Wenderlich tutorial (How To Create A Simple 2D iPhone Game with OpenGL ES 2.0 and GLKit). That tutorial is quite good, but I miss some parts of a puzzle. Ray creates orthographic projection using some magic numbers like 480 and 320. It is not clear to me why did he take these numbers, and as far as I can see - sprite is not mapped to the ipad simulator screen one-to-one pixel. I tried to play with parameters with which ortho matrix is created, but I cannot figure out what math is here. How can I calculate numbers (bottom, top, left, right, close, far) which will be parameters to orthographic projection matrix creation and have sprite on the screen shown in its original size?

• Configuring Compiz Grid?

  Disclaimer: I'm three days into Ubuntu, and am loving it so far. Except for this one thing. Apparently there is a way to get an 'Areo Snap' feature with the Grid Plugin for Compiz. I've downloaded the advanced configuration files and have selected the plugin in the Compiz Configuration - even re-mapped the keys because I don't have a numpad. Regardless of what I do, I can't get it to work, either by dragging the windows or using the assigned keys. Is there something I need to do in addition to these things? Am I simply missing something?

• Mouse wheel scrolls down, but not up?

  I've set up a new machine with Ubuntu 12.04 (x64) and have notice that the mouse wheel scrolls down fine, but when I scroll up, it pages down! I've run xev and have verified that scroll up is registering as button 4 and scoll down is button 5. So everything there is fine. I think that button 4 is somehow mapped to page down instead of scroll up. Any idea how to fix? • How do I make my monitors show up as two separate monitors? - NVidia GeForce GTX 550 ti

  I've got a dual-monitor setup, with the monitors configured through the "Nvidia X Server Settings" application. In the Ubuntu Display settings, the monitors show up as one extra-wide monitor labelled "Laptop". Until now, this really hasn't been a problem, but now I'm trying to set up a Wacom tablet. The Ubuntu tablet settings allow the tablet to be mapped to a specific monitor, but since the OS "thinks" that I have only one monitor, I can only map the tablet to both of them. This is a problem. Is there any way to have Ubuntu recognize the monitors separately?

• Infinite terrain shadows

  I'm creating an infinite terrain engine, which generates the terrain either with fractals or noise. How can I make dynamic shadows for the sun on this terrain, if I don't know in advance what will be rendered in front of the sun. My terrain: The sun is the only light, it is directional, my terrain is generated on a plane which is positioned before the camera, frustum culled and fits the size of the viewing frustum. • Windows VirtualBox can't browse network

  I'm running Windows XP as a VirtualBox guest OS under Ubuntu 11.10, and I can't browse the Windows network. It seems like I can connect to some specific network shares, maybe only ones that are already mapped to drives. If I disable ufw, it all works fine, and when I enable it again, the network browsing continues to work. I tried looking at /var/log/ufw.log and saw it blocking port 138. When I allowed that port, then I saw it blocking port 137. I found this answer, and it led me to bug 360975. The bug originally asked for both nf_conntrack_pptp and nf_conntrack_netbios_ns to be added to the defaults, but in comment 11, Jamie decided not to include nf_conntrack_pptp in the fix. I tried adding it in, and it seemed to solve my problem, but then the problem came back. How can I let the Windows guest OS browse the local network?

• Can I get the classic "run command" window

  I love unity but I hate it when alt+f2 brings up the dash. Is it possible to just remap alt+f2 so that the thing looks like exactly the old alt+f2 I know what I want is like going back in time but I really loved that fast command runner in old gnome. I can bring up terminal using ctrl+alt+T and run anything I want but it sometimes is a overkill to bring up something like that for small things. And I used to like the fact that older window was fast, had autofill and would disappear after launching the command. Or is there a utilty that looks somewhat like that and can be installed and mapped to some key.

• Processing Text and Binary (Blob, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView) Payload in WebSocket - (TOTD #185)

  The WebSocket API defines different send(xxx) methods that can be used to send text and binary data. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will show how to send and receive text and binary data using WebSocket. TOTD #183 explains how to get started with a WebSocket endpoint using GlassFish 4. A simple endpoint from that blog looks like: @WebSocketEndpoint("/endpoint") public class MyEndpoint { public void receiveTextMessage(String message) { . . . } } A message with the first parameter of the type String is invoked when a text payload is received. The payload of the incoming WebSocket frame is mapped to this first parameter. An optional second parameter, Session, can be specified to map to the "other end" of this conversation. For example: public void receiveTextMessage(String message, Session session) {     . . . } The return type is void and that means no response is returned to the client that invoked this endpoint. A response may be returned to the client in two different ways. First, set the return type to the expected type, such as: public String receiveTextMessage(String message) { String response = . . . . . . return response; } In this case a text payload is returned back to the invoking endpoint. The second way to send a response back is to use the mapped session to send response using one of the sendXXX methods in Session, when and if needed. public void receiveTextMessage(String message, Session session) {     . . .     RemoteEndpoint remote = session.getRemote();     remote.sendString(...);     . . .     remote.sendString(...);    . . .    remote.sendString(...); } This shows how duplex and asynchronous communication between the two endpoints can be achieved. This can be used to define different message exchange patterns between the client and server. The WebSocket client can send the message as: websocket.send(myTextField.value); where myTextField is a text field in the web page. Binary payload in the incoming WebSocket frame can be received if ByteBuffer is used as the first parameter of the method signature. The endpoint method signature in that case would look like: public void receiveBinaryMessage(ByteBuffer message) {     . . . } From the client side, the binary data can be sent using Blob, ArrayBuffer, and ArrayBufferView. Blob is a just raw data and the actual interpretation is left to the application. ArrayBuffer and ArrayBufferView are defined in the TypedArray specification and are designed to send binary data using WebSocket. In short, ArrayBuffer is a fixed-length binary buffer with no format and no mechanism for accessing its contents. These buffers are manipulated using one of the views defined by one of the subclasses of ArrayBufferView listed below: Int8Array (signed 8-bit integer or char) Uint8Array (unsigned 8-bit integer or unsigned char) Int16Array (signed 16-bit integer or short) Uint16Array (unsigned 16-bit integer or unsigned short) Int32Array (signed 32-bit integer or int) Uint32Array (unsigned 16-bit integer or unsigned int) Float32Array (signed 32-bit float or float) Float64Array (signed 64-bit float or double) WebSocket can send binary data using ArrayBuffer with a view defined by a subclass of ArrayBufferView or a subclass of ArrayBufferView itself. The WebSocket client can send the message using Blob as: blob = new Blob([myField2.value]);websocket.send(blob); where myField2 is a text field in the web page. The WebSocket client can send the message using ArrayBuffer as: var buffer = new ArrayBuffer(10);var bytes = new Uint8Array(buffer);for (var i=0; i<bytes.length; i++) { bytes[i] = i;}websocket.send(buffer); A concrete implementation of receiving the binary message may look like: @WebSocketMessagepublic void echoBinary(ByteBuffer data, Session session) throws IOException {    System.out.println("echoBinary: " + data);    for (byte b : data.array()) {        System.out.print(b);    }    session.getRemote().sendBytes(data);} This method is just printing the binary data for verification but you may actually be storing it in a database or converting to an image or something more meaningful. • The Dreaded Startup Repair Loop on Win 7

  For most people, upgrading to Windows 7 has been a relatively painless process.  Not me.  I am in the unlucky 1% or less who had a somewhat less pleasant experience.  First, I cloned my entire onto a larger (and much faster) solid state hard drive, only experiencing minimal problems. Then, I bought the Retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate, took a deep breath and... oh yeah, I almost forgot - BACK UP THE COMPUTER.  The next morning I upgraded to Win 7 and everything seemed fine, until... I rebooted the system, the nice Windows 7 launch graphics come up, it's about to launch and AWWW, are you kidding me?!?!  Back to the BIOS splash screen?  Next comes the sequence of failure - attempt repair - unable to repair - do you want to wipe your hard drive decisions. Because I purchased the retail version, a number is provided where I could call Microsoft Tech support.  When I did, they instructed me to click "Install" from my installation CD, which did not work.  When I tried the "Upgrade" option, it reaches an impasse, telling you that yoiu have a newer version of Win 7, and thus cannot Upgrade.  If you choose "Install" you willl lose everything... files, programs, EVERYTHING.  Or at least this is what it tells you.  I was not willing to take the risk. To make things worse, I had installed a new antivirus software application before I realized my system was unstable (Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security), and this was causing additional problems. One interesting thing, and the only saving grace as it turns out, was that my system WOULD successfully reboot into the OS if I chose to restart it, rather than shut it down.  If I chose to shut down, I would have to go through the loop again until I was given the option to restart. As it turned out, I needed to update my BIOS.  I assumed that since I had updated my BIOS a long time ago to settings that were stable under Windows Vista Ultimate x64, I incorrectly expected Win 7 to adopt the same settings and didn't expect there to be any problems.  WRONG. My BIOS had a setting to halt the boot cycle if various kinds of errors were detected.  Windows Vista didn't care about this, but forget it under Windows 7.  I turned immediately corrected that BIOS setting.  Next, there were the two separate BIOS settings: enable USB mouse and enable USB keyboard.  The only sequence of events that would work were to start my reboot process over from stratch with a hard-wired non-usb keyboard and mouse.  Whent the system booted under these settings, it doesn't detect any errors due to either the mouse or keyboard, and actually booted for the first time in a long while (let me tell ya, that's an amazing experience after fiddling with settings for two entire weekends!) Next step: leave your old mouse and keyboard connected, but also connect your other two devices (mouse, keyboard) that use USB connections.  During the boot cycle, the operating system will not fail due to missing requirements during startup, and it will then pick up the new drivers necessary to use your new hardware. If you think you are in the clear here, you are wrong.  The next VERY IMPORTANT step is to remember to change your settings in the BIOS upon next startup.  Specifically, yoiu will need ot change your BIOS to enable USB mouse and enable USB keyboard input.  If you don't, Windows will detect an incompatibility upon the next startup, and you will be stuck once again in the endless cycle of reboot/Startup Repair/reboot/Startup Repair, without ever reaching a successful boot. Here's the thing - the BIOS and the drivers registered in Win 7 need to match.  If they don't, you're going to lose another weekend worrying and fiddling, all the while wondering if you've permanently damaged your hard drive beyond repair. (Sigh).  In the end, things worked out.  I must note that it is saddening to see how many posts there are out there that recommend just doing a clean install, as if it's the only option.  How many countless poor souls have lost their data, their backups, their pictures and videos, all for nothing other than the fact that the person giving advice just didn't know what to do at that point? My advice to you, try having a look at your BIOS settings first and making sure Win 7 can find your BIOS settings, and also disabling in your BIOS anything that might halt your system boot-up process if it encounters errors.

• Evoluent Vertical Mouse - Re-mapping Buttons?

  I have the Evoluent Vertical Mouse at work and at home. One is wired, the other wireless. Ubuntu maps their buttons differently and it makes me crazy when I switch locations. I use 12.10, but same has applied to every Ubuntu version since 9.10. The wired mouse is as desired: top finger button is left-click, scroll wheel is middle click and scroll, middle finger button is a right-click. On the wireless version, bottom finger button is mapped to right-click and the middle finger button is center-click. • What X keysym to use for rfkill / flight mode?

  On my laptop Fn+F12 toggles flight mode in windows. I'd like the same functionality in Linux and am looking for the appropriate X keysym that will invoke the equivalent of rfkill block all when mapped with xmodmap. I can see there is XF86WLAN and XF86Bluetooth, but they are not what I'm after. I want it to kill/enable all radio devices. I'm not after the script that would do this (see here for example), but wondering if Ubuntu has this functionality already hooked up and if so, what keysym to set up in xmodmap.

• How do I configure multiple domain names on my IIS server? [closed]

  We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

• My Herokuapp is inaccessible from custom domain name

  I have a Heroku app that is located at myapp.herokuapp.com. I have mapped a domain name to this app, using the A properties. I followed the instructions on Heroku's website to the letter, and it worked for a few days. Now when I try to access the site from the custom domain, it's timing out! On Chrome, I am getting "Oops! Google Chrome could not find that page!" message. I tried pinging the name as well, but I got this error: ping: cannot resolve yourhostname.org: Unknown host The app itself is working and I don't see any error messages from Heroku. Or from new Relic. What's going on here? Also tried running host and this was the error message: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

• Domain mapping issues

  I have two domain names - .com & .co.uk bought with 123-reg and just one student Windows hosting pack associated with the .co.uk domain. The .com domain is the main one which people would be trying to access, so I just mapped the domain to the hosting this morning. The problem is that I would really like it to be functional by tomorrow morning and the usual waiting time is 24-48 hours. Is there point in stopping the process and trying with forward it with CNAME record instead, does it take less time? (I can just go back and do proper domain mapping during the weekend) Also, is there a possible way to check whether the domain mapping has been done correctly before these 24-48 hours? From some computers I get 404 Error on homepage.

• KeyTouch remaps the delete key

  I installed KeyTouch, but it decided that the delete key should be the KeyTouch hot key. So, when I pressed deleted, KeyTouch came up. Next I uninstalled KeyTouch and now the delete key doesn't do anything. Is there any way to remap the delete key to actually delete? Notes: I tried reinstalling KeyTouch, and the same thing happens. KeyTouch does not allow the user to map the delete key. EDIT xev shows keycode 119 when I press the delete key xmodmap shows keycode 119 mapped to Delete NoSymbol Delete running xmodmap -e "keycode 119 = Delete" from the command line does not resolve the issue

• Powermapper alternatives and google analytics?

  Whats a good application to map the hierarchical structure of a website and maybe get some google analytic action going on? Powermapper is pretty expensive and the trial version didnt seem particularly good at importing google analytics CSV files as advertised. In fact, out of the 1000 pages mapped, exactly 0 were successfully imported. I dont really need all the features Powermapper offers anyway, so the price tag is a bit much. All I really need is like, a simple visual representation of my (automatically generated) site structure (like a hierarchical site structure) and the ability to integrate my google analytic stats (page views mostly) with it.
