  • Should I go back to college and graduate with a poor GPA or try to jump into an entry-level development position? [closed]

    I once attended a top-10 American university but I am currently not in school for several different reasons. Chief among them is that I did very poorly two semesters and even failed one of them (got two F's) which put me in automatic suspension. My major is not CS but math. I am in a pickle at the moment. After I was suspended I got a job at a niche IT company in the area. I am employed as something of an IT generalist; my primary responsibilities are Windows systems administration/networking but I also do some Android, iOS, and .NET development. I have released a few apps to the app store under my name and my company's name, and we have done work for a few big clients. I started working at my job about 1.5 years ago and I am somewhat happily employed but I do not see it as a long-term fit because it is a small company with little opportunity to advance. I would like to move out to California and particularly to the Bay Area to get a job at a more reputable or exciting company, even at a lower rate of pay, but I am not sure if I should do that or try to go back to school. If I went back to school, it would take 1-1.5 years to graduate and some $. Best case scenario I would graduate with a 2.9 or 3.0 GPA. It is a top-10 school, but that's a crappy GPA. If I do not go back to school, I will be a field where most people have degrees, without a degree. If anything goes wrong I could be really screwed as I feel I will get no respect without a degree. On the other hand I really would like to get started in the field and get more serious about developing good development practices, learning new languages/frameworks, and working with people who know a lot more than I so I can learn and grow as a developer and eventually do my own thing. Basically, I am wondering: Should I just go back to school? How much does the bad GPA / good school reputation weigh in? What about the fact that I am a Math major and not a CS major (have never taken a CS course)? Does my skill set as something of a generalist bode well for me finding work at a start up in the Bay Area? If not (2), should I hunker down and focus on producing a really good (or a few medicore) iOS apps? Android apps? etc... How would you look at someone who did great in HS, kind of goofed off in college and eventually quit, and got into development? Thanks for any thoughts or input.

  • Places to start for system programmer transitioning to web programming

    So here's where I'm coming from: My background is in C#, C++, VB Script, php, javascript, PowerShell, T-SQL, and VB 6. I have some experience with python, and a brief introduction to Ruby On Rails. At work, we're transitioning to a web based UI in the next year or so, but in asp.net & SilverLight. I would like to, if possible, learn more open source web technologies on the side. And, hopefully, in a year and a half or so, I would like to transition to a more open source web technology position. I found that I do really like python, but I'm open to pretty much anything. And yes, I do know Linux (ubuntu and gentoo), as well. And, here's my question: What technologies, frameworks, IDEs, or systems should I be highly proficient in to become a prime candidate for a position doing web application development using non-Microsoft technologies?

  • GRUB- error: no such partition grub rescue and Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot > on pendrive

    I have dell inspiron, previously I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Windows 7 and made it dual boot. But since I want to upgrade my Ubuntu version and change the partition spacing, I deleted 11.10 partition directly and extended my hardrive space (Windows + Ubuntu) at that moment everything was fine. Then I prepared a 12.04 32bit USB and installed it . It was installed but isn't showing dual boot option like 11.10 and my machine directly boot into Windows 7. So instantly i again deleted my 12.04 partition . Now I login into Windows 7 but whenever I put USB ( with 12.04 ) to boot from it, I am facing error of "no such partition grub rescue" even though I try to put lower version(11.04) it showing another error "Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot " I have reinstall Windows 7 and reformat all partition, still I am facing same error :(

  • JqueryUI dialog box causes button to lose styling

    Hey everyone, I'm using JQueryUI dialog boxes and, while it works, it seems to remove any CSS styling on the button that opens the dialog. I have to manually refresh the page to get the styling back. An example button which launches the dialog: (button_submit is my CSS theme and launc_popup is used to detect the button click in JQuery. <asp:Button ID="btnLaunch" CssClass="button_sub launch_popup" runat="server" Text="Dialog..." CausesValidation="false" OnClientClick="return false;" /> My jquery: $('.launch_popup').click(function() { $("#dialog-form").dialog("open"); }); My dialog-form: $("#dialog-form").dialog({ autoOpen: false, height: 300, width: 300, modal: true, buttons: { 'Close': function() { $(this).dialog('close'); } } }); This happens to all the buttons that open dialogs. Is there a way to 'restyle' the button without refreshing the page? (It's in an updatepanel if that makes a difference, although this bit's client-side so not sure if that should affect it).     I am trying to get a modal confirmation dialog working when a user submits a form. My approach, I thought logically, would be to catch the form submission. This is because I'm pretty certain that the scope of the dialog needs to be at the same level as the function which calls it. However, the issue is that when you click 'Confirm' nothing happens. The submit action does not continue. I've tried $('#completeform').submit(); also, which doesn't seem to work. I have tried removing the .preventDefault() to ensure that the form submission isn't completely cancelled, but it doesn't seem to make a difference between that and returning false. Not checking the box, show and alert fine. Might change to dialog at some point ;), clicking 'Cancel' closes the dialog and remains on the page, but the elusive 'Confirm' buttons seems to not continue with the form submission event. If anyone can help, I'd happily share my lunch with you! ;)

  • mixing OpenGL and Interface Builder/ UI Controls - bad idea? Why? (iPhone)

    I've heard that OpenGL ES and standard iPhone UI controls don't play well together, but I'm wondering if anyone knows why, and what the effects are? I'm writing an OpenGL based game, and the view is loaded from a nib file with ui controls, and it seems to work ok, but the game is really simple at this point... does using ui controls cause some kind of performance hit?

  • Android: Error trying to edit button text after thread sleep

    (programming Android in Eclipse) I am trying to set up a delay in changing the text in a button. I am getting errors only after there is a delay and the text needs to be changed. Here is the simplified code without a while loop: final Button button_target = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button_target); Thread textChange = new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run(){ button_target.setText("fog"); try{ Thread.sleep(3000); }catch(InterruptedException e){} } }); textChange.start(); And now here is the code where a change of text on the button is required after the sleep which now causes and error and exit (forced): final Button button_target = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button_target); Thread textChange = new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run(){ button_target.setText("cat"); try{ Thread.sleep(3000); }catch(InterruptedException e){} button_target.setText("dog"); } }); textChange.start(); what am I doing to cause the error? Is there another method that I should do to be able to invoke a sleep or delay to the thread so that a text change operation can be performed? (the actual code has a while loop but I believe this form puts the error in highlight)

  • table cell background color change problem

    I work on another guy's code, and I try to change the table cell background color when mouse over the cell, and change back to the original background color when mouse leave. I use the following code: var bgcolor=$(".cell-el").css("background-color") $(".cell-el").hover( function(){ $(this).css("background-color", "#3c3c36")}, //mouse enter, bg-color change function(){ $(this).css("background-color", bgcolor) // mouse leave, bg-color change back }) Things are working fine, EXCEPT that when mouse first time enter the cell, the cell background color is not changed to "#3c3c36", but when mouse leave the cell after first entering and enter in the cell again, the cell's background color changed to "#3c3c36". That's the cell color never change for mouse first enter, after that, everything is working great. What's could be the cause of this problem?

  • Developing "Command Line" in .NET?

    Imagine a "search box" on the right top side of the UI Windows Application. When user types a desired action, a matching functionality is executed. Screen gets opened, or action gets performed. For example: user types "create" and intellisence offered next word options "client"/"product", user picks "client", and "Create New Client" screen opens up. So what I am looking for if there is a framework support for this. I assume that framework shall bind together text commands names, commands and show in intellisense. Same framework possibly could have been used in alternative "Command Line interface". I recall Microsoft had some recent framework that helps to setup "command Line Interface" environmental. It is hard to search on web for this keywords, so relying on intelligent help from you guys. Thanks in advance.

  • Positioning divs

    Hi all, I'm working with the Jquery accordion. So my code goes like this: <h3><a href="#">Test </a></h3> <div class="accordion" style="background-color:yellow;"> <div class="test_1"> my first dynamic content div </div> <div class="test_2"> my second dynamic content div </div> </div> So you see the H3 that's the 'accordian', if i click on that the div accordion opens with inside 2 seperate divs. That all works but the positioning of my 2 divs inside the accordion div fails. I should like to get them UNDER eachother, but both divs got generated dynamically what means that i don't know the size of the first div (test_1) so i can't position on pixels. I already tried with some br tags etc but nothing seems to work. Is there a way to do this in css maybe with float or something or should it be done inside the html ? ANy other ideas? Regards, T

  • How can one use the "Add view" dialog in Visual Studio efficiently when working with ASP.NET MVC?

    Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me? Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation. Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries. Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that?? Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example) EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784 Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.

  • How to make the value of one select box drive the options of a second select box

    I want to make an HTML form with 2 select boxes. The selected option in the first select box should drive the options in the second select box. I would like to solve this dynamically on the client (using javascript or jQuery) rather than having to submit data to the server. For example, let's say I have the following Menu Categories and Menu Items: Sandwiches Turkey Ham Bacon Sides Mac 'n Cheese Mashed Potatoes Drinks Coca Cola Sprite Sweetwater 420 I would have two select boxes, named Menu Category and Items, respectively. When the user selects Sandwiches in the Menu Category box, the options in the Items box will only show Sandwich options. I'm stuck as how I might approach this. Once I filter out the 2nd list one time, how do I "find" the list options once I change my menu category in the 1st list? Also, if I'm thinking in SQL, I would have a key in the 1st box that would be used to link to the data in the 2nd box. However, I can't see where I have room for a "key" element in the 2nd box. How could this problem be solved with a combination of jQuery or plain javascript?

Every 10 seconds the form is serialized and synchronized with the server. I now want to add an interactive form on one of the tabs: when a user enters a name in a field, this information is sent to the server and an id associated with that name is returned. This id is used as an identifier for some dynamically added form fields.     I have a javascript action on a div (asp.net panel) as an onkeypress attribute. This is the default action button on an asp.net Panel control. It contains the following: onkeypress="javascript:return WebForm_FireDefaultButton(event, 'ctl00_cp1_ucInvoiceSearch_btnSearch')" For some reason when I change my textbox to a jQuery textbox clicking enter no longer fires this div.   • Has anyone noticed that a WPF file dialog will pass through a click to the UI when double clicking t

    I have some buttons on my WPF UI and I also need to choose files from time to time. I kept noticing strange problems where when I double-click an item in the file dialog, a button on the main UI would also get clicked. After experimenting, it seems that if you line up an item in the file dialog with a button behind it on the main UI and double click to select the file, it will single-click the button behind it as well. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a freak bug with the way I have my UI laid out?

    I just found out that the jQueryUI now has it's own built-in auto-complete combo box. Great news! Unfortunately, the next thing I found is that making it multi-column doesn't seem nearly that simple (at least via documentation). There is a post here where someone mentions that they've done it (and even gives code), but I'm having trouble understanding what some of their code is doing.   • Can I use Visual studio for Python and Django development?

    I have been using Visual Studio for quite some time now, in fact from the VS 2005 version. Right now, I am not only comfortable but addict to using it(VS 2010) for all my development needs. Recently I have been learning Python and Django. In that getting the tutorial tasks up and running with IDLE seems very lame and outdated(I am following the Django Book). Therefore, I downloaded and configured Eclipse & PyDev. Eclipse seems good and fine but needs a bit of learning curve for itself. So, I am looking for a way to configure Visual Studio 2010 for Python and Django development if possible. Please tell me if that's possible and How ?
