• SharePoint web part not displaying for site readers

  Hello - I've built a custom SharePoint 2010 web part and deployed it to the home page of a publishing site. It's a very simple web part that just displays items from a SP list in a drop down list. The web part works fine if I'm logged in as a site owner or a member but not if I'm just a reader. The web part doesn't render at all to readers. I don't get any of the web part chrome or title, just nothing. I have other web parts (out-of-box ones) in the same zone that are displaying fine so it's not an issue of the whole zone not displaying. As a reader, I can still view the list directly so it doesn't appear to be a problem with list permissions. My web parts are being deployed as a farm solution, not sand-boxed and the assembly is being deployed to the GAC. I feel like I must be missing something simple here but I'm stumped. Help.

  I am new to the Twitter API, and I looked at their whitelisting policies and I am a little confused... I'm basically writing a twitter aggregrator that crawls the public tweets of a set of users (not more than 200) hourly. I wanted to apply for whitelisting, and they seem to offer account based and IP based whitelisting. Since I am using a shared hosting, my outbound IP address might vary (and twitter does'nt allow IP ranges for whitelisting). So I am considering using account based whitelisting. However, while using OAuth, is it possible for me to use account based whitelisting for a background process that crawls the API hourly?

• Options for non-native form inputs for the web?

  I'm wondering if there are any good non-native form inputs for web development? I am currently using the built in <input> controls. They work just fine, but for my application they are too big (especially on OS X). I am wondering if there are any libraries that I can drop in as replacements. I am especially interested in ones that: Are a close to native control behavior as possible. Support for tabbing, highlighting current textbox, pressing up/down in <select>, etc. Have something that replicates <select> Look good and are compact I am aware that you can use CSS for some styling, but it's pretty minimal and looks different depending on the browser.   I'd like to control iTunes through Objective-C ( I just can't get Python appscript installed correctly on my OS/X 10.6.3 system ... that would have been my first choice ). From what I gather, the IPC on Cocoa is based on Apple Events : is there either: Online documentation on iTunes / Apple Events API ? Instrospection mechanism to get to iTunes API? I know about Applescript Editor / Open Dictionary functionality but I can't figure out how to translate the information I see into IPC calls. Note: I have already tried working out a solution through PyObjC but the main function I am after is track searching which I can't figure out. Disclaimer: OS/X super-newbie here.

• Dangers of Windows API and Administrator accounts?

  I wrote a game server plugin last night that allowed me to create a user account and set it as administrator, which is a huge problem. Of course the simple fix is to create a basic user account with limited privileges for the game servers, so they would not have access to do things like this. I wanted to find out if there's anything else in the Windows API that would create such a huge vulnerability though? I guess I want to just make sure that when the client's game servers accounts are moved to limited access accounts, we won't have to worry about any of them using the windows API to sabotage the machines. There is already enough exploits in the game itself to worry about, without having to worry about client's taking over the machines with plugins lol. Some of the questions relative would be... Can you disable/enable Remote Desktop from c++? Can you get a list of AD user groups from c++? (not that a user belongs to, but a complete list)

  I'm trying to convince my co-workers to switch from a web site project to a web application project, because I want the use of the project file. However I can't diffuse this argument against: The web site project allows each page to be compiled into a single dll. Their argument is this enables easy fixing of errors found after publishing. This is contrast to how the web application project compiles all code behind into a single dll. Is updating a single page's dll essentially different to updating the entire site's dll? Is there some way to compile each page's code behind into a seperate dll in the web application project? Are there some prohibitive (performance,memory?) costs to compiling each page's code behind into seperate dll's that we are unaware of? Why is the feature(?) to compile each page to separate dlls in web site projects and not web app projects?

  Hi all, I read some paragraphs in a book saying that it is not possible to do a partial postback for web, even AJAX is employed. Ajax will postback everything and update only ajaxfied controls. However, on pages I made using ajax, I used Fiddler to monitor the transportation. I found when the page initial load, it loaded everything include pictures .... However, when I click a button and do a ajax postback. I can only see the some data were loaded.... Looks like it doesn't need to reload the whole page again. I don't know if what I see is correct? I'm working on a Project with outdated, very old looking GUI (the used GUI framework is more than 10 years old) Since the used programming language is Eiffel, there are almost no good libraries for GUI development. Although Wrappers for C libraries exist, it's not that easy to wrap something like Qt with them. The current GUI framework uses the Windows API to create windows, widgets and so on. I just learned that some user disable javascript on their browser (I didn't even know that was possible and/or necessary). Now, here's my question: What happens to my web application if a user disable Javascript? For instance, I'd like to display some screens using Ajax and commands such as 'InsertBefore' to bring in live a DIV that will display the result.   I've built a class that derives from System.Web.UI.WebControl. It basically renders pagination links (same as what you see on top of GridView when enabled) for use above a repeater. I'm creating some anchor tags explicitly inside my nav control obviously, but they don't perform ajax postbacks. My understanding is that ajax requires POSTS to work right? Well, these would be GETs which I think is the problem. Is there a way to achieve what I'm trying to do? Thanks!

  Hi, Is there any way to write a MIDlet, but still use BlackBerry API classes and functions (including the APIs that require code signing)? In particular, I'm trying to use Kuix (http://www.kalmeo.org/projects/kuix). A pure MIDlet + Kuix (so without BlackBerry stuff) works perfectly after I converted the jar/jad to a cod file. As soon as I add BlackBerry API-stuff (CoverageInfo.COVERAGE_DIRECT in this case) I get a verification error when trying to run the cod file: Error starting $name: Module $name has verification error 2410 at offset 9a4f What can I do to solve this?

  Hi there, I am trying to use gwt-mobile-webkit, particularly its location api. It works well with iPhone (both device and simulator) and Firefox and on G1 with 1.6 Android, however, it does not work on G2 with Android 1.5 on it. In result I am getting onFailure callback with Permission Denied error. So it seems, that there is some geolocation API (gears or HTML5) in the browser available, but it just does not want to ask user for granting permissions. Do you know if there is any workaround or just enable it somewhere in settings?

  The portlet API deos not provide any reference to the enclosing servlet request and response objects. I know it is not the preferred model of interaction with the user, but it seems draconian to remove all access. I understand that for portlet driven interaction with the user, you want to use portlet URLs, and let the portlet container manage all the complexity. However if you have a number of portlets which are basically showing variants of the same data, it makes sense for them to be able to use the enclosing request to drive the data. We ended up using using a Liferay specific call to get the request, and it all seems to work as we wish. However I do feel the guilt. So my question really is, is there an underlying deep reason for the prohibition, or is it just to enforce the authors view of the API environment?

  Hi I'm trying to write a console program that reads characters from a file. i want it to be able to read from a Unicode file as well as an ANSI one. how should i address this issue? do i need to programatically distinguish the type of file and read acoordingly? or can i somehow use the windows API data types like TCHAR and stuff like that. The only differnce between reading from the files is that in Unicode i have to read 2 bytes for a character and in ASNSI its 1 byte? im a little lost with this windows API. would appretiate any help thanks
