• If most of team can't follow the architecture, what do you do?

  Hi all, I'm working on a greenfields project with two other developers. We're all contractors, and myself and one other just started working on the project while the orginal one has been doing most of the basic framework coding. In the past month, my fellow programmer and I have been just frustrated by the design descisions done by our co-worker. Here's a little background information: The application at face value appeared to be your standard n-layered web application using C# on the 3.5 framework. We have a data layer, business layer and a web interface. But as we got deeper into the project we found some very interesting things that have caused us some troubles. There is a custom data access sqlHelper type base which only accepts dictionary key/valued entries and returns only data tables. There are no entity objects, but there are some massive objects which do everything and then are tossed into session for persitance. The general idea is that the pages (.aspx) don't do anything, while the controls (.ascx) do everything. The general flow is that a client clicks on a button, which goes to a user control base which passes a process request to the 'BLL' class which goes to the page processor, which then goes to a getControlProcessor, which at last actually processes the request. The request itself is made up of a dictionary which is passing a string valued method name, stored procedure name, a control name and possibly a value. All switching of the processing is done by comparing the string values of the control names and method names. Pages are linked together via a common header control that uses a combination of javascript and tables to create a hyperlink effect. And as I found out yesterday, a simple hyperlink between one page and another does not work because of the need to have quite a bit of information in session to determine which control to display on a page. My fellow programmer and I both believe that this is a strange and uncommon approach to web application development. Both of us have been in this business for over five years and neither of us have seen this approach. My question is this, how would we approach our co-worker and voice our concerns and what should we do if he does not want to accept the criteic? We both do not want to insult the work that has been done, but feel that going forward will create a nightmare for development. Thanks for your comments.

• Why can't Ubuntu find an ext3 filesystem on my hard-drive?

  This question is related to this question: Not enough components to start the RAID array? I'm trying to retrieve data from a "Western Digital MyBook World Edition (white light)" NAS device. This is basically an embedded Linux box with a 1TB HDD in it formatted in ext3. It stopped booting one day for no apparent reason. I have extracted the HDD from the NAS device and installed it in a desktop machine running Ubuntu 10.10 in the hope of accessing the files on the drive. I guess that last line is the punch line :) Why can't it find the ext3 filesystem on my drive? What do I need to do to mount this partition and copy its contents? • JCP.next.3: time to get to work

  As I've previously reported in this blog, we planned three JSRs to improve the JCP’s processes and to meet our members’ expectations for change. The first - JCP.next.1, or more formally JSR 348: Towards a new version of the Java Community Process - was completed in October 2011. This focused on a small number of simple but important changes to make our process more transparent and to enable broader participation. We're already seeing the benefits of these changes as new and existing JSRs adopt the new requirements. However, because we wanted to complete this JSR quickly we deliberately postponed a number of more complex items, including everything that would require modifying the JSPA (the legal agreement that members sign when they join the organization) to a follow-on JSR. The second JSR (JSR 355: JCP Executive Committee Merge) is in progress now and will complete later this year. This JSR is even simpler than the first, and is focused solely on merging the two Executive Committees into one for greater efficiency and to encourage synergies between the Java ME and Java SE platforms. Continuing the momentum to move Java and the JCP forward we have just filed the third JSR (JCP.next.3) as JSR 358: A major revision of the Java Community Process. This JSR will modify the JSPA as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons we expect to spend a considerable amount of time working on it - at least a year, and probably more. The current version of the JSPA was created back in 2002, although some minor changes were introduced in 2005. Since then the organization and the environment in which we operate have changed significantly, and it is now time to revise our processes to ensure that they meet our current needs. We have a long list of topics to be considered, including the role of independent implementations (those not derived from the Reference Implementation), licensing and open source, ensuring that our new transparency requirements are implemented correctly, compatibility policy and TCKs, the role of individual members, patent policy, and IP flow. The Expert Group for JSR 358, as with all process-change JSRs, consists of all members of the Executive Committees. Even though the JSR has just been filed we started discussions on the various topics several months ago (see the EC's meeting minutes for details) and our EC members - including the new members who joined within the last year or two - are actively engaged. Now it's your opportunity to get involved. As required by version 2.8 of our Process (introduced with JSR 348) we will conduct all our business in the open. We have a public java.net project where you can follow and participate in our work. All of our deliberations will be copied to a public Observer mailing list, we'll track our issues on a public Issue Tracker, and all our documents (meeting agendas and minutes, task lists, working drafts) will be published in our Document Archive. • Determining whether a visitor reached two different pages in one visit

  I have a funnel that I would like to track. Tracking this funnel won't work with the default "goal funnel" tracking in Google due to the fact that I am mixing events and pageviews. As such, I've created a series of reports: Visits to demo pages - An inclusion filter on "Page". Triggers an Event on these pages - An inclusion filter on "Page" and "Event Category". Does not bounce - An inclusion filter on "Page" and an exclusion filter on "Exit Page" for these same pages. Reach our storefront - ?? Purchase something - An inclusion filter on "Page" and a report that shows "Transactions". At a basic level, I need to track users who reached demo pages, then reached any page on our store. Intuitively, I created a segment, used two inclusive "Page" filters (one for the demo pages and one for any page in our store), and combined them with an "AND" operator. I thought this was working until I tried to do the same thing in a dashboard widget and on a custom report. When I tried the same thing in those areas, I got zero results. I figured this might be because widgets and custom report filters function differently from segment filters (the options are different for all of them), so I tried applying my "demo page && store page" segment to a report that gave me a general page list. All I saw was a list of the specific pages. I tried simplifying things by creating a custom report that showed all visits to store pages, then applied a segment that filtered for users who visited demo pages. This got me the same numbers as my "demo page && store page" segment, but showed a list of demo pages. This has led me to believe that the "demo page && store page segment" approach and the "demo segment && store report" functionally behave the same. However, this experience has left me questioning whether they're giving me what I want. Are these methods showing me all users who reached both sets of pages? Is there a better/easier/more standard way of doing this aside from looking at visitor flow reports? I'm trying to avoid a combination of custom variables/events and using the horizontal funnel approach since it would consume a large number of our limited goals and seems more complicated than is necessary for tracking this funnel.

• [AJAX Numeric Updown Control] Microsoft JScript runtime error: The number of fractional digits is out of range

  If you have using Ajax control toolkits a lot (which I will skip the parts on where to download and how to configure it in Visual Studio 2010), you might have encountered some bugs or limitations of the controls, or rather, some weird behaviours. I would call them weird behaviours though. Recently, I've been working on a Ajax numeric updown control, which i remember clearly it was working fine without problems. In fact, I use 2 numeric updown control this time. So I went on to configure it to be as simple as possible and I will just use the default up and down buttons provided by it (so that I won't need to design my own). I have two textbox controls to display the value controlled by the updown control. One for month, and another for year. <asp:TextBox ID="txtMonth" runat="server" CssClass="txtNumeric" ReadOnly="True" Width="150px" /> <asp:TextBox ID="txtYear" runat="server" CssClass="txtNumeric" ReadOnly="True" Width="150px" /> So I will now drop 1 numeric updown control for each of the textboxes. <asp:NumericUpDownExtender ID="txtMonth_NumericUpDownExtender"     runat="server" TargetControlID="txtMonth" Maximum="12" Minimum="1" Width="152"> </asp:NumericUpDownExtender>                          <asp:NumericUpDownExtender ID="txtYear_NumericUpDownExtender"     runat="server" TargetControlID="txtYear" Width="152"> </asp:NumericUpDownExtender>                                                  You noticed that I configure the Maximum and Minimum value for the first numericupdown control, but I never did the same for the second one (for txtYear). That's because it won't work, well, at least for me. So I remove the Minimum="2000" and Maximum="2099" from there. Then I would configure the initial value to the the current year, and let the year to flow up and down freely. If you want, you want write the codes to restrict it. • Usage of Pirated software at a company

  Hi, I am redirected from stack over flow since the topic is ethics rather than about programming. Thank you for letting me know that. and please give me advices. So, I started to work at a company as an engineer a couple of months ago. It's a small company and what they basically do is answering service on phones. Now they are switching from normal phones to IP phones so that computers take more important place in the work. However, all the computers used by workers are equipped with pirated software ,even their operating systems are. Moreover, they don't even buy one license to make copies for other computers. In other words, they do not spend any money for the software in office. I am not saying copying a licensed one is legit, but the situation is too much. There is one guy who did installing those pirated soft. He does not feel any sense of guilt and even justified when I asked about it. and he is not even a specialist. He just searched on the internet to install pirated software. Our boss does not have any knowledge of computers, so he took cheaper way. How do you guys think about this? Since I am still new to the company, I am not doing maintenance or managing on those cracked computers. But I have to use those software daily. And later on I will be doing support, help desk kind of staff. I really don't want to take responsibility for operating pirated software. and from an aspect of developer and engineer, pirated software are not able to get legal support and it may work unexpectedly. So, I am thinking about changing job. Am I thinking too much? should I wait until I have more credit from the boss and try to change his policy? So far, the boss does not take any words from me. • How bad does it look to have left a job soon after starting? [closed]

  I have a job I would like to leave. On advice from friends and parents I have stayed. Their primary concern is that it would look bad on my resume if I left only after a few months of joining. My concerns with the job are as follows: When I started it was preferred I provide and use my own equipment. Could be out of business in a few months from lack of cash flow Poor code quality: memory leaks and lack of error handling. The same mistakes continue to be made even though I have raised the issue. It has become evident that co-workers do not understand memory management rules of the platform and are not interested in learning them. Yet, there is still surprise from them when strange bugs continue to crop up. As a result don't feel I will learn from co-workers. Plus, fixing the the lingering bugs and trying to keep up on new feature development is like a game of whack-o-mole that never ends. I don't believe in the companies vision or its ability to execute on the ideas anymore. My ideas and suggestions for very small tweaks are quickly dismissed. And so more than half or so have come back as bugs that we end up needing to address. I have been told to wait on fixing bugs in codes until we can talk to the original author. I don't feel I am allowed to take initiative to just fix/change things and do what I think is best. Everything needs consensus even for a bug fix before any work is done. I am adopting a shut-up and just do what I am told approach to save myself from ulcers. Lots of meetings (I am personally not involved in all of them which is good) but the sheer amount reminds me of days at a big corporation. Why is everyone around me always meeting? It's a small company. I can count everyone on my toes and fingers. I can say with certainty I have no interest in working with any of them again. This is the first time I have truly worked with a group of so called "B and C players". Ultimately, I think it is my fault for not doing a better job evaluating the team and company before joining. But I have generated a better set of questions when probing companies in the future. My questions are: How bad does it look to have left a job soon (few months) after starting? What would be the best way to explain my concerns and reasons for leaving without badmouthing the company? Should I stick it out to what I believe will be the soon end of the company?

• Did I choose proper career path? [closed]

  I am a C# Junior. My company has it's own enterprise documents-flow system written, my job along with 10 other programmers is to write modules/add-ons for it. I am totally bored of this job, I dont like Microsoft's technologies stack (dont hate me here, just subjective), but it's plain boring, enterprise is boring (subjective again, everyone's tastes differ), days on this work last long and I am tired of it. In short - I dont like my job. In my spare time I am doing PHP-development and I totally like it. I am also doing web-design, so I am LAMP-kind of guy who loves his Ubuntu and does design aswell. I know that most programmers don't do design themselves, so some person is either all about design or all about coding, but I enjoy both and do both. I often get interesting sites orders, I love to make whole websites with all the design, I love the feeling of site completeness, I enjoy talking with customers. I like that PHP is simple and skill cap is lower than one of java, meaning I can become expert in it after some years. But C# (and J2EE also) pay more, and I am doing really good in C#. But I dont like it. I can go for J2EE, platform itself seems more fun to me rather than .NET, but EE development is still boring to me. But it seems higher payed, easier to find job (since PHP is too common for its easiness. But if you are expert in something it doesnt matter, right? Just a higher skillcap.) Question: I want to go on with freelance. I want to have an opportunity to start my own startup in web. Actually I have a browser-game already written by myself, it earns me around 500$ per month which I am really proud of since I am 21 only and still noob in coding. I want to find part-time PHP job. 3 days per week so I can get some stable income, I can work in team and learn from them, social factor matters aswell as ensurance and diversity. I also want my total income (freelance + part-time job + own startup maybe)to be not too much less than one I have working in EE development sector. Maximum of 25% lower, but not more. Is it all possible if I stick with web-development (LAMP + HTML/CSS/JS/Jquery/AJAX)? Or is it easier to reach my goals with EE development?

• iOS app with a lot of text

  I just asked a question on StackOverflow, but I'm thinking that a part of it belongs here, as questions about design pattern are welcomed by the faq. Here is my situation. I have developed almost completely a native iOS app. The last section I need to implement is all the rules of a sport, so that's a lot of text. It has one main level of sections, divided in subsections, containing a lot of structured text (paragraphs, a few pictures, bulleted/numbered lists, tables). I have absolutely no problem with coding, I'm just looking for advice to improve and make the best design pattern possible for my app. My first shot (the last one so far) was a UITableViewController containing the sections, sending the user to another UITableViewController with the subsections of the selected section, and then one strange last UITableViewController where the cells contain UITextViews, sections header help structure the content, etc. What I would like is your advice on how to improve the structure of this section. I'm perfectly ready to destroy/rebuild the whole thing, I'm really lost in my design here.. As I said on SO, I've began to implement a UIWebView in a UIViewController, showing a html page with JQuery Mobile to display the content, and it's fine. My question is more about the 2 views taking the user to that content. I used UITableViewControllers because that's what seemed the most appropriate for a structured hierarchy like this one. But that doesn't seem like the best solution in term of user experience.. What structure / "view-flow" / kind of presentation would you try to implement in my situation? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated! • DHCP settings out of range Internet shuts off after a few minutes

  I recently upgraded from windows eight to windows 8.1 I do not know if this has anything to do with anything I have a 64 bit OS. My Internet goes off by itself every 5 minutes even though my wireless icon at the lower right of the screen still shows connected I had an error message in the last event in it said that might DHCP settings were out of range. I get my internet at my house through a wireless portable hotspot through my smart phone. But i haven't ever had any problems before and i only have this problem on this network. If i turn airplane mode on and reset my network card, the internet will come back to life but soon die. i don't experience this problem while on a different network or if i'm on WiFi. • IPsec tunnel to Android device not created even though there is an IKE SA

  I'm trying to configure a VPN tunnel between an Android device running 4.1 and a Fedora 17 Linux box running strongSwan 5.0. The device reports that it is connected and strongSwan statusall returns that there is an IKE SA, but doesn't display a tunnel. I used the instructions for iOS in the wiki to generate certificates and configure strongSwan. Since Android uses a modified version of racoon this should work and since the connection is partly established I think I am on the right track. I don't see any errors about not being able to create the tunnel. • Connection speed drops from 1 Gbps to 10 Mbps (Vista 64)

  I recently got a Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart Server EX490) setup so I could do backups and other things. However, I am having trouble on my Vista 64 PC. The backup will be making great progress, then it will just slow down. At one point, I noticed the lights on my Netgear GS105 indicated it was not using a 1000 Mbps connection, but a 10 Mbps one. I checked the Status of Local Area Connection (Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection) and that also showed the same slow speed. This has happened several times in the last couple days. When I disabled the network device, and then enabled it, it established the 1 Gpbs connection again. However, some of the times the Sent Bytes Activity on the Status windows indicate that the data flow is still slow (100 to 1000 bytes every couple seconds). Obviously, at this rate I could backup faster to floppy disk. :) My question is how to diagnose and fix this problem. When I look at the Administrative Events, I do a Errors: Bonjour Service 456: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) And a Warning: e1yexpress Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected. I am suspicious there is some power saving mode. I found a post suggesting System Idle Power Saver(SIPS) may be the issue. I am going to try that, but looking for other suggestions or diagnostic advice. I have several new items in this configuration: server, client software, switch and cat6 cables.

• Gartner PCC Follow-up: Interview with Chaeny Emanavin, Usability Lead - Office of Information Develo

  Last week at the Gartner Portals, Content and Collaboration conference in Baltimore, Chaeny and I co-presented on Oracle Enterprise 2.0 and BIA's Citizen Portal. Chaeny's presentation about the BIA solution was very well received and I wanted to do a follow-up interview with Chaeny to discuss more details about their solution and its Enterprise 2.0 features. Ajay: What were the main objectives for the BIA Citizen Portal? Chaeny: The BIA Citizen Portal is designed to provide all the services of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to the community of 564 federally recognized tribes that include over 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. The BIA provides the same breadth of services that the entire U.S. Federal Government provides in one small Bureau. So, we needed a solution that was flexible enough to handle content ranging from law enforcement to housing to education. Key objectives for external users was to use the Web as a communications channel and keep them informed on what services are available. We also wanted to build an internal web presence and community for BIA's 5000 employees to ensure that they update their content, leverage internal experts and create single sources of truth for key policy documents. Ajay: How is the project being implemented? Chaeny: We are using a phased approach. In phases 1 & 2, interim internal and external sites were built to ensure usability and functional requirements are being met. In Phases 3 & 4, we built out a modern internal and external presence using Oracle WebCenter Suite and Oracle Universal Content Management (UCM), including enabling delegated content management for our internal business units. Phase 4 was completed in January 2010. Phase 5 will add deeper Enterprise 2.0 collaboration capabilities to the solution. Ajay: Are you integrating any existing sites into the new solution? Chaeny: Yes, we have a SharePoint implementation that we are using for document management. We needed more precise functionality however. We found that SharePoint would let individual administrators of a SharePoint site actually create new sites. In a 3 months span, we had over 200 new sites created and most were not being used. So, we had an enormous sprawl problem. Our requirements mandated increased governance and more granular control over the creation of sites and flexible user access to content. In SharePoint this required custom code and was very time-intensive which was unfeasible given our tight deadlines. We are piloting Oracle WebCenter Spaces as our collaboration solution to mitigate these issues. However, we must integrate our existing SharePoint investment which we can do easily by using the SharePoint connectors available in Oracle WebCenter and UCM. Ajay: What were the key design parameters for your solution? Chaeny: We wanted everything driven by standards and policies. We created a cross-functional steering group called the Indian Affairs Web Council to codify policies that were baked into the system. Other key design areas were focused on security/governance, self-service content management, ease of use, integration with legacy applications and seamless single sign-on. We are using Dublin Core as our metadata standard. We also are using Java, APEX, and ADF as our development standards. Ajay: Why was it important to standardize on a platform? Chaeny: We initially looked at best-of-breed solutions, but we faced a lot of issues getting the different solutions to work together. Going with an integrated solution was more economical, easier to learn and faster to deliver the solution. Ajay: What type of legacy applications are you integrating into the portal? Chaeny: Initially we are starting with administrative apps such as people directory and user admin and then we will integrate HR and Financial applications among others. Ajay: Can you describe some of the E20 collaboration features you are putting into the solution? Chaeny: We are adding Enterprise 2.0 using Oracle WebCenter Spaces to deliver different collaboration tools such as wikis, blogs and discussion forums. Wikis to create rapid, ad hoc monthly roll-up reports; discussion forums to provide context-specific help; blogs to capture tacit organization knowledge from experts, identify gurus and turn tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. Ajay: Are you doing anything specifically to spur adoption and usage? Chaeny: Yes, we did several things that I think helped us ramp quickly. First, we met our commitments for the new system launch date and also provided extra resources for a customer support "hotline" during the launch period. Prior to launch, we did exhaustive usability studies to capture user requirements around functionality, navigation and other key interaction areas. We also created extensive training programs so that the content managers in each business unit were comfortable using the content management tools and knew the best practices for usage. Finally, to launch the Enterprise 2.0 collaboration capabilities, we are working with a pilot group from the Division of Forestry and Wildland Fire Management of BIA. This group of people in the past have been willing early adopters and they have a strong business need to collaborate with many agencies both internal and external across State, County and other Federal jurisdictions. Their feedback is key to helping us launch Enterprise 2.0 successfully in our broader organization. Ajay: What were the biggest benefits to internal BIA employees and to the external community of users? Chaeny: For our employees, the new Enterprise 2.0-based solution will make it easier to find information; enhance employee productivity by embedding standard business processes into the system and create more of a community by creating connections with experts via social collaboration to ultimately provide better services more quickly. For the external American Indian and Alaska Native communities, we have a better relationship with the users and the new site has improved BIA's perception as a more responsive and customer-centric organization.

• Exim log and send all mail for a given domain through another server

  I administer a handful of shared web hosting servers. Recently, Yahoo has been deprioritizing/greylising all email sent from these servers. I am getting the dereaded 421 4.7.0 [TS02] Messages from my.ip.address temporarily deferred message from Yahoo and their postmaster has been unresponsive. I am unable to find any way to set up a feedback loop like AOL has for my IP address -- I did find a way to set up a feedback loop for a given domain, but we host hundreds of domains, and don't have the time to set up that many feedback loops. So what I'd like to do is twofold: Configure Exim to send all email destined to an @yahoo.com address to a relay, a new server which has an IP that yahoo is not blocking. Configure Exim (or maybe the relay) to log all emails sent to @yahoo.com, so I can review them and, in case one of my uses is violating ToS and sending SPAM to yahoo users, take the appropriate action. How could I accomplish these? Or, does anyone have any other advice for how to get mail to flow through Yahoo and ensure that any email generating complaints is brought to my attention? (For what it's worth, these servers are not listed on any major blacklists)

• BPM Suite 11gR1 Released

  This morning (April 27th, 2010), Oracle BPM Suite 11gR1 became available for download from OTN and eDelivery. If you have been following our plans in this area, you know that this is the release unifying BEA ALBPM product, which became Oracle BPM10gR3, with the Oracle stack. Some of the highlights of this release are: BPMN 2.0 modeling and simulation Web based Process Composer for BPMN and Rules authoring Zero-code environment with full access to Oracle SOA Suite’s rich set of application and other adapters Process Spaces – Out-of-box integration with Web Center Suite Process Analytics – Native process cubes as well as integration with Oracle BAM You can learn more about this release from the documentation. Notes about downloading and installing Please note that Oracle BPM Suite 11gR1 is delivered and installed as part of SOA 11.1.1.3.0, which is a sparse release (only incremental patch). To install: Download and install SOA 11.1.1.2.0, which is a full release (you can find the bits at the above location) Download and install SOA 11.1.1.3.0 During configure step (using the Fusion Middleware configuration wizard), use the Oracle Business Process Management template supplied with the SOA Suite11g (11.1.1.3.0) If you plan to use Process Spaces, also install Web Center 11.1.1.3.0, which also is delivered as a sparse release and needs to be installed on top of Web Center 11.1.1.2.0 Some early feedback We have been receiving very encouraging feedback on this release. I also like the fact that BPMN runs on the same service engine as BPEL. By that all known best practices for making a BPEL  process reliable are valid for BPMN processes as well. • Unable to install PEM/pkcs12 created by gnutls to Cisco ASA

  I've been pulling some hair out trying to figure out why cisco devices don't like my certificates. My primary need is to get a trustpoint set up with CA,cert,key on the ASA for VPN systems, however I'm having the same issues on my IOS devices. I created a pkcs12 with openssl a few months ago that imported with no issues, but now that I'm getting ready to move this lab to production I'm using gnutls certtool as I found it adds alt_dns and ip_address fields properly to the certificate, (which cost me a few more hairs trying to get to work with openssl's ca tool) I'm including the current test certs below, don't worry I'm not using these in production ;) The maddening thing is that after I thought gnutls was generating certs incorrectly, I tried making a pkcs12 for a printserver and it imported with no issues. Here's my command flow for creating these certs: certtool --generate-privkey --disable-quick-random --outfile nn-ca.key certtool --generate-self-signed --load-privkey nn-ca.key --outfile nn-ca.crt certtool --generate-privkey --disable-quick-random --outfile nn-g0.key certtool --generate-certificate --load-privkey nn-g0.key --outfile nn-g0.crt --load-ca-privkey nn-ca.key --load-ca-certificate nn-ca.crt openssl pkcs12 -export -certfile nn-ca.crt -in nn-g0.crt -inkey nn-g0.key -out nn-g0.p12 openssl enc -base64 -in nn-g0.p12 -out nn-g0.base64.p12 The password for the attatched pkcs12 is "ciscohelp" without quotes. • iSCSI SAN Implementation with several ESXi hosts and two Equallogic SANs

  I work for a small state college. We currently have 4 ESXi hosts (all made by Dell), 2 EqualLogic SANs (PS4000 and PS4100) and a bunch of old HP Procurve switches. The current setup is very far from being redundant and fast so we want to improve it. I read several threads but get even more confused. The Procurve Switches are 2824. I know they don't support Jumbo Frames and Flow Control at the same time, but we have plans to upgrade to something like Procurve 3500yl. Any suggestions? I heard Dell Powerconnects 6xxx are pretty good but I'm not sure how they compare to HPs. There will be a 4-port Etherchannel (Link Aggregation) between the switches, and all control modules on SAN will be connected to different switches. Is there anything that will make the setup better? Are there better switches then Procurves 3500yl that cost less than 5k? What kind of bandwidth can I expect between ESXi hosts (they will also be connected to 2824 with multiple cables) and SANs?

• Does water damage a fiber optic / cat5 cable

  One of the buildings I support recently had an adventure with a broken fire sprinkler. Lots of water everywhere. One of the "drains" the water used was the vertical risers between network closets. The cable plant in this building has bundles of cat5e as well as conduit with bundles of multimode fiber optic cables. The fiber is standard multi strand plenum rated stuff that terminates in boxes that have the patches to the switches. As far as I can tell, no water got near the ends of the cables (fiber or copper) but the conduit was saturated, and is likely still saturated because there isn't any air flow to dry the cables out. My gut reaction is that while it didn't do the cables any favors, it likely also isn't going to cause any problems. A little more reading / googling around leads me to believe that the water may cause problems down the road. Some pretty pictures so everyone knows what I'm talking about: Fiber conduit: Vertical riser, going down: Vertical riser, going up: Does anyone have any experience with this sort of damage and how to deal with it? Should we just ask the insurance adjuster to add "pull new structured cable" to the list of things to be replaced? And, if the opinion is "replace it because it'll start failing randomly over time" please include links that describe the specific failure modes, so I've got some ammo to use with the adjuster.

• Second ip address on same interface CentOS 6.3

  I tried to add a second LAN addresses in CentOS 6.3 on a brand new install and it's not working. I installed a new copy of CentOS 5.7 and tried the same and it worked right away. • Cooling for a small server room

  I have a server room about 12 feet square with an unfinished ceiling (exposed ducts and wiring). It houses a few servers (about ten, 1U and 2U) and some networking gear (four 1U switches, three routers, three modems, two cable boxes). With the door closed, it runs around 80 degrees Fahrenheit with half the servers turned on. When I turned on all the servers it reached 86 before I chickened out and propped the door open. The room is adjacent to air-conditioned office space, but does not itself have dedicated air conditioning. The ventilation for this room seems to be limited to one duct coming in at ceiling level, with a powered fan to draw air in, and one duct at ceiling level to allow air to flow out (it seems like it may just go into the drop ceiling cavity in the adjacent room). The adjacent office space stays fairly cool, but I'd prefer not to leave the door propped open all the time. There is both 110v and 208v service in the room, and plenty of power available. But there are no windows, and no floor drains (in a pinch we might be able to run a condensation hose through a small hole we'd drill in the wall to a nearby sink area, but only if absolutely necessary). I've considered portable A/C units, but I'm not sure on sizing and a lot less sure how we would run the exhaust hose(s). I suppose we could point one at the existing room exhaust duct (air return), but substantially modifying the duct is probably a no-no. I've also considered installing a fan box in the door of the room, but I'm concerned that this will only drop the temperature a little. Even right now, with all the equipment on, the room is at 83 degrees with the door open. And the main building A/C turns off daily at 6 PM to conserve energy, so the adjacent room temperature rises at night. How would you cool this room? Let's say the goal is to bring the temperature with everything running from a steady state of around 90 degrees down to 75 (equivalently, to offset the heat produced by ten 1U servers).
