• A strange bug, is Mysql asynchronous?

  Hello, I have a strange bug. I launch a PHP Unit test Suite. At the beginning, it executes a big query to initialize the database. If I put a breakpoint just after the execution of the sql, there is no problem and my tests pass. If I don't put any break point, they don't pass and say that the tables don't exist! It works as if the sql query was asynchronous! Do you have an idea of the bug? Or how to debug that? Thanks a lot in advance for your help, I'm lost! Farf

• Is there another way to integrate PDF viewing in a Flex application?

  I'm looking at ways to embed PDF viewing in a Flex application. Currently the only option I've seen is by using the flash.html.HTMLLoader class, which only works if you're using AIR. This isn't a big deal -- I'm willing to use AIR if I have to -- but based on my experimentation with viewing a PDF this way it appears that AIR simply integrates the embedded Adobe PDF browser Plug-in for viewing, which not only shows the PDF page(s), but provides all of the manipulation controls as well (zooming, printing, etc.) which I don't want to see. I'm looking for something that works somewhat along the lines of the JPedal library for Java -- an embedded component that simply renders the PDF alone. Has anyone found a way to do this with either AIR's built-in component or via some other method?

  Hi, I have two questions about jQuery UI Dialog: (1) How can I open a big dialog with topleft corner at my mouseclick point (and if the point is very near the right-bottom corner of my viewport, the dialog will be partly outside the viewport)? I know I can set position for the dialog, but it seems the dialog always overrides my position specifications by bringing itself wholly back into the viewport. (2) If I have multiple dialogs open, how can I find the one that is currently topmost (and if there are several topmost ones that do not overlap, find any one of them)? Thanks!

• MySQL Full-text Search Workaround for innoDB tables

  I'm designing an internal web application that uses MySQL as its backend database. The integrity of the data is crucial, so I am using the innoDB engine for its foreign key constraint features. I want to do a full-text search of one type of records, and that is not supported natively with innoDB tables. I'm not willing to move to MyISAM tables due to their lack of foreign key support and due to the fact that their locking is per table, not per row. Would it be bad practice to create a mirrored table of the records I need to search using the MyISAM engine and use that for the full-text search? This way I'm just searching a copy of the data and if anything happens to that data it's not as big of a deal because it can always be re-created. Or is this an awkward way of doing this that should be avoided? Thanks.

• Referencing invalid memory locations with C++ Iterators

  I am a big fan of GCC, but recently I noticed a vague anomaly. Using __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator (ie, the most common iterator type used in libstdc++, the C++ STL) it is possible to refer to an arbitrary memory location and even change its value without causing an exception! Is this expected behavior? If so, isn't a security loophole? • We failed trying database per custom installation. Plan to recover?

  There is a web application which is in production mode for 3 years or so by now. Historically, because of different reasons there was made a decision to use database-per customer installation. Now we came across the fact that now deployments are very slow. Should we ever consider moving all the databases back to single one to reduce environment complexity? Or is it too risky idea? The problem I see now is that it's very hard to merge these databases with saving referential integrity(primary keys of different database' tables can not be obviously differentiated). Databases are not that much big, so we don't have much benefits of reduced load by having multiple databases.

  Hey There, I just came to realize, by reading some questions and answers on StackOverflow, that adding event handlers using += in C# (or i guess, other .net languages) can cause common memory leaks... I have used event handlers like this in the past many times, and never realized that they can cause, or have caused, memory leaks in my applications. How does this work (meaning, why does this actually cause a memory leak) ? How can I fix this problem ? Is using -= to the same event handler enough ? Are there common design patterns or best practices for handling situations like this ? Example : How am I supposed to handle an application that has many different threads, using many different event handlers to raise several events on the UI ? Are there any good and simple ways to monitor this efficiently in an already built big application ? Thanks in advance!

  To avoid spammers, what's a good strategy for imposing limits on users when sending email from our site? A count limit per day on individual IPs? Sender emails? Domains? In general terms, but recommended figures will also be helpful. Our users can send emails through our web page. They can register and log in but are also allowed to do this without logging in, but with a captcha and with a field for the senders email. Certainly, there is a header, "The user has sent you the following message.", limiting the use for spammers, so perhaps it's not a big problem. Any comments on what I'm doing will be greatly appreciated.

• Am I underestimating MySQL ?

  Hi I'm about to implement a feature on my website that recommends content to users based on the content they already have in their library (a la Last.fm). A single table holds all the records of the content they have added, so a row might look something like: -------------------- | userid | content | -------------------- | 28 | a | -------------------- When I want to recommend some content for a user, I use a query to get all the user id's that have content a added in their library. Then, out of those user id's, I make another query that finds the next most common content among those users (fx. 'b'), and show that to the user. My problem is when I'm thinking about the big picture here. Say that eventually my site will hold something like 500.000 rows in the table, will this make the MySQL response very slow or am I underestimating MySQL here?

• Preserve trailing whitespace Sybase

  I have a big chunk of textual data which I split and write multiple rows of a varchar(255) column of a table. Sometimes, the last character happens to be a space. When I read back this row, the trailing space is chopped and I get only 254 characters. This messes up my data when I append the next row to the end of this one. My code sends the full 255 char (incl space) to the DB API. How can I check that the trailing space is actually written to the table? I am not in a position to rewrite/redesign legacy code. Is there any setting - either in the DB, DB interface, read/write calls etc - that I can use to preserve the trailing space?

  AJAX autocomplete is fairly simple to implement. However, I wonder how to handle smart tag suggestion like this on SO. To clarify the difference between autocomplete and suggestion: autocomplete: foo [foobar, foobaz] suggestion: foo [barfoo, foobar, foobaz], or even better, with 'did you mean' feature: [barfoo, foobar, foobaz, fobar, fobaz] I suppose I need some full text search in tags (all letters indexed, not just words). There would be no problem to do it witch regex or other patterns for limited number of tags (even client side). But how to implement this feature for big number of tags? Is there any particular reason (besides URL) the tags on SO are dash separated? What about Unicode characters in tags? I store the tags in the table with the following columns: id, tagname. My SQL query returns objects with following fields: id, tagname, count

• Execution sequence inside a jquery event handler

  A while ago I worked on a MS-SQL project and I remember a "IS IN" thing. I tried it on a MySQL project and it did not work. Is there an equivalent? Workaround? How would you achieve that with MySQL (while trying to be efficient)?

  Hi, I'm looking at the buttons used on twitter's home page, specifically the big orange 'signup' button. I see it is defined like this: <p id="signup-btn"> <a id="signup_submit" href="/signup"> <span>Sign Up</span> </a> </p> are they just using css to give the orange button appearance (which may just be a jpg), and also using css to specify the roll-over appearance (another jpg), and finally a third state for mouse-click (another jpg) to give the impression of a real clickable button? If that's how it works, what should I look for to do the same thing?   Hello, I'm creating this (big?) project in high school where I'm programming the game Shithead (card game) (so that two people can play against eachother). I'll use mostly PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and Ajax. But I have never made a project like this before. I have only made like CMS-systems and so on. Do you guys have any tips on how I should structure this project? I'm also not so used to Object-oriented programming, but I guess I should consider this.   this is my assembly program which is just a function to swap *x *y. so first argument from main is address of x which is in 8(%ebp) and second one is address of y is in 12(%ebp). the program does swap x and y. I need 7 lines for doing this. can you make it 6 lines and there is a condition you can use only %eax,%ecx, and %edx 3 registers. I think about it so much.. but.. I can't make it 6 lines...there must be a way.. isn't it? this might be not a big deal.. but if there is a way to get it in 6lines. • Programatically determining file "size on disk" in advance

  I need to know how big a given in-memory buffer will be as an on-disk (usb stick) file before I write it. I know that unless the size falls on the block size boundary, its likely to get rounded up, e.g. a 1 byte file takes up 4096 bytes on-disk. I'm currently doing this using GetDiskFreeSpace() to work out the disk block size, then using this to calculate the on-disk size like this: GetDiskFreeSpace(szDrive, &dwSectorsPerCluster, &dwBytesPerSector, NULL, NULL); dwBlockSize = dwSectorsPerCuster * dwBytesPerSector; if (dwInMemorySize % dwBlockSize != 0) { dwSizeOnDisk = ((dwInMemorySize / dwBlockSize) * dwBlockSize) + dwBlockSize; } else { dwSizeOnDisk = dwInMemorySize; } Which seems to work fine, BUT GetDiskFreeSpace() only works on disks up to 2GB according to MSDN. GetDiskFreeSpaceEx() doesn't return the same information, so my question is, how else can I calculate this information for drives 2GB? Is there an API call I've missed? Can I assume some hard values depending on the overall disk size?

• how do i let text fit to UIButton?

  problem: Button size is enough, however when I change title, the title text cannot fit the button width. Any SDK function can solve this problem, or I need to manually code to solve it? Please refer to following pictures. design in the nib file. initial show in simulator when I change the title text tried some ways before _button.titleLabel.adjustsFontSizeToFitWidth = YES; the way will change my font size. I cannot accept the way. [_button setTitleEdgeInsets:UIEdgeInsetsMake(10.0, 10.0, 0.0,0.0)]; the way change label's position only, not label size. [_button.titleLabel sizeToFit]; result is same with picture(3). [_button sizeToFit]; title moved to upper left corner, and the title still the same result. Just confused, my button size is big enough, why title size is so small?

It it working in FF, Chrome/Safari but not in IE 7/8. Is there something I'm missing here? Big Picture: We're using a swf to render custom type and there is a link in the rendered (flash) content. We're hoping to catch the link action in the jQuery listener so we don't have to extend our swf have an optional param to return false on link click. We thought we got around it, until IE testing commenced... Let me know if any more info is needed. Thanks!

  Hi all, i am wondering how can i select specific number of child objects instead of taking them all with include? lets say i have object 'Group' and i need to select last ten students that joined the group. When i use '.Include("Students"), EF includes all students. I was trying to use Take(10), but i am pretty new to EF and programming as well, so i couldn't figure it out. Any suggestions? UPDATED: ok, i have Group object already retrieved from db like this: Group group = db.Groups.FirstOrDefault(x=>x.GroupId == id) I know that i can add Include("Students") statement, but that would bring ALL students, and their number could be quite big whether i need only freshest 10 students. Can i do something like this: var groupWithStudents = group.Students.OrderByDescending(//...).Take(10);? The problem with this is that Take< no longer appears in intellisense. Is this clear enough? • Safe ASCII char to replace whitespace before storing

  My code passes a big bunch of text data to a legacy lib, which is responsible for storing it. However, it tends to remove trailing whitespace. This is a problem when I read the data back. Since I cannot change the legacy code, I thought about replacing the all spaces with some uncommon ASCII character. When I read back the text, I can replace them back. Is this a bad idea, considering that I cannot touch the legacy storage code? Which character can I use as a substitute? I was considering some char upwards of 180. There will only be spaces - no tabs or newlines - in the data. The data is alphanumeric, with special characters.

  A lot of what I'm doing at the moment is figuring out other peoples code and adding or adapting functions, so currently I am debugging more than I am writing code of my own. I'm still new to this, Junior Developer, and I am always finding new ways to improve what I am doing. For example I recently found This Guide which had some excellent tips, such as overriding the ToString() method in your classes so children are readable from their parents. So I am looking for any other tips or tricks to make my debugging more efficient, as I recognise it as a big part of programming, that you more experienced programmers may have picked up or found. Anything appreciated, I can read websites just fine so no need to explain it yourself if you have a good link!
