  TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

  I have a small office with 3 computers running Linux Ubuntu. All the data are stored in a NAS drive (WD MyBook Live). I would like to - somehow - be able to access the email archives as well from each of these computers. For now, I don't really care if it would be possible for each user to access the email archives simultaneously (although that would be ideal). I have read about Portable Thunderbird over Wine as well as installing IMAP on the NAS drive. However, not only I haven't found a complete guide on how to do that but I am also not sure whether either of these solutions would work for me anyway.

  Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. I was thinking that perhaps I could upload the videos to Youtube with the privacy set to invite only and then delete the video from the hard drive automatically. Could this be done?

  I have two 150GB SATA drives in hardware RAID 0, on which I have my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps). I'm migrating to Windows 7, but I want to keep my XP system until I've got it all running smoothly. So I want to: break the RAID move C: and D: to one of the drives (there's enough room) use the other drive for Win 7 boot into one or the other Clearly I can't move C: and D: after breaking the RAID, so I'm assuming I need to image the two partitions first, then break the RAID and restore the images to one of the drives. So my questions are: Is this possible? If so, what would be a good (free) imaging/restore tool? How do I ensure that the drive will boot after restoring the images? What sort of gotchas should I look out for? If there's a better solution than this, I'd be grateful for suggestions. Thanks!

Since sdc1 and sdd1 change depending on the order in which they are plugged in, I decided to mount them using their UUID instead. These are my fstab entries UUID=d1b28578-451b-4f03-af28-2e8a6d5b7efb /media/Seagate ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users UUID=36bf5df4-934e-42d4-9e25-16a13971509c /media/Projects ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users They work fine, but when I unmount them and unplug the USB drives, they still show up in Nautilus (I'm running nautilus with X11 forwarding to an Ubuntu machine, btw). Now if I remove those entries from fstab, the drives disappear from Computer. If I add the entries back, they show up as an unmounted drive even when the drive is not plugged in. How do I do this so they don't show up when they're not plugged in?

  Hello. I have a 500 GB hard drive with one NTFS-partition on it. I can mount it with Ubuntu and view the contents. But when I try to copy something, I get an I/O error. Ok, I tried to make its image with dd. I/O error as soon as it starts. I have installed ddrescue, but its manual page says not to use it with drives, failing on I/O. Can I manage to get some information from this drive and how to do this?

  I'd like to force myself to use the correct (right side or left side) Shift, Ctrl, and Alt keys depending on what letter I'm typing. For instance I'd like to use the right Shift key when typing 'A' and the left Shift key when typing 'P'. I find myself using only the left side a lot and I'm looking for a way to set the mappings on my machine so that it only responds to correct pairings.   I was wondering if there is a relatively simple way to expand my HD space. My setup is 4 x 640 GB drives. Motherboard has 4 ports on 1 controller and 2 ports on another controller, however they cant be joined. I would like to somehow get more store space in raid configuration. One scenario that I can see working is replacing one 640 drive for a 2TB drive. Waiting for Raid to rebuild. Rinse and repeat. However, I have no idea if I would be able to even see/access the new space. All alternatives / ideas are welcome. Thank you

  I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. • How to meet Windows 8 upgrade's 20 GB requirement on a 40 GB SSD with a 22 GB Windows 7 install?

  A PC I have has Windows 7 installed on a 40 GB SSD, and I bought a Windows 8 upgrade for it. The current Windows folder on it however is 22 GB, that's after removing hibernation, turning off the pagefile and removing all extra programs/features. So even if I purge every other file and folder, the Windows folder itself takes more than half the disk. The PC also has a 1 TB HDD, but the upgrade installer didn't give me any options about choosing another drive. So, is my only option to reinstall Windows 7 on a larger drive, then proceed with the Windows 8 upgrade? Or is there anything I can remove from the Windows folder that while might be dangerous for long term usage, is fine for the few minutes I need to get Windows 8 installing?

  Possible Duplicate: How to force Windows XP to rename a file with a special character? I have a few files whose names have characters such as "?" and ":" that are forbidden by windows. I'm not sure how they managed to get there with these names, since I can't manually create files with these names. They're recovered from an HFS drive, but the tool that recovered them was running under windows and so should have been subject to the same restrictions while creating them, I would think. Anyway... now that they're here, I can open them, but I can't move, copy, rename, or delete them. I want to delete a few of them, but most I want to save and copy to another drive. How might I go about this?

And I have found out that copy speed is so slow, please look at picture below: I am just want to know, if this is because of I was tried to copy so many small files By the way. the SSD is Sata 3, but my mobo only has SATA 2 interface, I do not know if connect SATA 3 device to SATA 2 interface contributes to slow copy speed.

  I've heard numerous times in the web hosting industry that using "too much" disk space on a drive is bad for performance. Is this just a myth? Can someone explain why this is an issue, even in a situation where the amount of IO done to the drive would be the same at 10% as it would be at 90%? I'm especially curious in the case of virtual servers. If I set up 10 Logical volumes as the virtual disks for some VMs, is it going to run better if I "waste" 20% of the disk space?

  Hi, I've got a 2TB hard drive at home and one at work. I use my laptop to connect to them. I want these 2 hard drives to be exactly the same. But these hard drives will never be connected at the same time. Is this possible? It means that my laptop needs to track the changes AND copy all new files to its hard drive temporarily. My laptop should act as an intermediate between the 2 external hard drives. There are lots of syncing options if both drives are connected at the same time, but there seems to be no solution for my specific problem. Any ideas? FYI: I use a Mac.

During the installation I got this message: The partition you selected might contain files from a previous Windows installation. If it does, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you will not be able to use your previous version of Windows. The C:\ drive now has two (2) Windows folders: Windows (15.3 GB) Windows.old (15.7 GB) Don't see why I need the Windows.old taking over 15GB of space on my hard drive so I tried to delete it. It didn't work. How can I safely delete this folder?

  I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop. The location of the program is D:\Any_Folder\any_program.exe How do I start/execute that program via command prompt in Windows 8? I have tried the command line START any_program.exe, but it shows me an error that Windows cannot find 'any_program.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. By the way, it worked perfectly in Windows 7. And, if I type START notepad.exe or START firefox.exe (Firefox is not installed in C: drive), it works in Windows 8.

  Is there anyway to make a folder or a partition on a computer (Linux or Windows) act like a mass storage device to other computers or devices when connected with a Male-Male USB cable? For example, I have a Windows 7 computer with 2 partitions, C and D. I would then connect that computer to another computer or a Smart TV using a Male-Male USB cable, and the other computer or device recognizes a folder/partition on current computer as a mass storage device. Is this possible? If not, is there any USB switch that can connect an external hard drive or flash drive to both a computer and TV without the need to manually switch them? (I know about some USB switches, but they only support automatic switching with some certain types of printers, not with mass storage)

One way I've read about online is to go into developer mode to download and set up LAMP. I was wondering, wouldn't I be able to store the apache, mysql, php, and mediawiki files on the cloud (google drive)? • How can I move an existing VM's files to a new directory in the same datastore?

  Hi, I have some VMs deployed on ESX. In vSphere 4, I want to move these VMs into another directory in the datastore. So the VM directories are under root, but I want them in root/MyNewFolder. I tried this by turning off a VM, copying the VM's file (VMDK etc) into the directory I want, deleting the hard drive from the VM's settings, adding a new hard drive and then selecting the new path to the VMDK. When I press ok on the settings dialog box, having made this modification to the settings, I get the following error: not found. What I am trying to do also does not seem to be possible when making a new VM. I can only make VMs under root.

I'll be running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 I have a single 2 TB disk, and plan to make a partition for windows (100 GB) and use the rest for data. I know Readyboost will work nicely for the C drive, but am unable to find any information on whether it will accelerate a second drive or partition. Just to clarify, I'm NOT trying to use the harddrive instead of the usb sticks. I'm trying to speed up the second partition using the USB sticks So, will readyboost work for a secondary partion or harddrive?

• Resize a new database to predicted maximum size

  Currently I have a SQL Server database which is about 2 Gb. I know over the next year it's going to grow to a maximum of about 10Gb. Hard drive space is not an issue in the slightest. Is there a down side to resizing the datafile to 20Gb now, then defragmenting the hard drive? Should I resize the log file to 1Gb as well? Something ridiculously large so that fragmentation doesn't happen there either. With this question I would like to avoid the datafile becoming fragmented on the disk itself, but I don't want to negatively impact performance.
