  • Sending SPAM free mail through my website

    - by Sara
Hi, I've been battling with this issue for couple of months. I need to send bulk mail (not spam) through my social network to users in situations like newsletters, site invitations (when user imports their address book contacts) I'm using shared hosting and it limits 500 mails per hour. Even though i manage to send mails most of them end up in user's spam box. After researching these are the solutions that i finally came up with. 1) Use Google Apps SMTP (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/features.html) 2) Move into VPS 3) Use shared hosting with throttle enabled Please advise me on what to choose. Will using Google Apps prevent mail being sent as spam? I can't use other 3rd party SMTP like iContact or Aweber as "invitation sending script" will send emails to thousands of contacts, depending on user's addressbook. Thanks in advance

  • Preventing Email Spoofing

    - by DT
I use Google Apps with my domain. Recently, we have begun to receive spam that gets past Google's spam filters. They are from our own email addresses. I am wondering how to prevent this kind of email spoofing. We use an SPF record with the "~all" setting. I'm wondering if I can upgrade that to "-all". However, Google Apps recommends against it. Also, I'm not 100% sure that our SPF record is complete. Any suggestions? Thank you ever so much.

  • Are there mapping utilities out there that will let me import geo position data (lat/long) and plot the points on a map?

    - by GregH
I have a data file with a bunch of lat/long positions. Is there any mapping software out there (google maps, etc) that will allow me to import the positions from the file and plot them on a map? I would be this can be done through google maps but I'm not sure how to do it. I just want something that I can use quickly with a minimal amount of programming to do. I don't need to annotate anything. Just view where the points are on the map. I'm just wondering if there is something already available out there to import into google maps.

  • How do I replicate autohotkey hotstrings in Chrome OS

    - by IThink
Google gave me a Cr-48 about a month ago. I like it. Its simple and powerful. The temptation to fuss and muss has been removed. However, one of the things I miss a lot is hotstrings that I set up in autohotkey. So for instance typing "asap" will autoexpand to "as soon as possible" no matter what software I am in. I cannot do that in Chrome OS. Google Docs has something under toolspreferencesautomatic substitution but that is only specific to Google Docs. I want to have hotstrings everywhere.

  • Programmatically query route planner for travel time/distance?

    - by Rich
Hi I would like to achieve something whereby I have a spreadsheet such that the columns are: Column A - place name Column B - place name Column C - distance by road between places in columns A and B Column D - travel time by road between places in columns A and B I thought it might be possible using Google Docs' spreadsheet and its 'Google' functions, but I've not found any that might do the trick. In the end I could knock up an app to do it using the Google Maps API but would rather avoid it if I can. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Rich

  • How to create a chart from mysql data?

    - by user187580
    Hello, I have some data and want to create some dynamic charts. I have looked on Google visualisation api .. It looks great but the problem is I am not very familiar with it. Any ideas, how I can set the data.setValue from mysql data. <script type='text/javascript'> google.load('visualization', '1', {'packages': ['geomap']}); google.setOnLoadCallback(drawMap); function drawMap() { var data = new google.visualization.DataTable(); data.addRows(6); data.addColumn('string', 'Country'); data.addColumn('number', 'Popularity'); data.setValue(0, 0, 'Germany'); data.setValue(0, 1, 200); data.setValue(1, 0, 'United States'); data.setValue(1, 1, 300); data.setValue(2, 0, 'Brazil'); data.setValue(2, 1, 400); data.setValue(3, 0, 'Canada'); data.setValue(3, 1, 500); data.setValue(4, 0, 'France'); data.setValue(4, 1, 600); data.setValue(5, 0, 'RU'); data.setValue(5, 1, 700); var options = {}; options['dataMode'] = 'regions'; var container = document.getElementById('map_canvas'); var geomap = new google.visualization.GeoMap(container); geomap.draw(data, options); }; </script> I can create chart using some other methods but just interested in using Google Visualisation API. Thanks.

  • Making a simple searchable directory of people and their skills in a day - Which technologies?

    - by gav
Hi All, I am working with a small theatre company. Currently they have a list of people on paper with notes about their skills next to each one. I want to create a database / directory for them so that they can add, delete, update and search for people. It is a very simple and common scenario I know but the issue here is that I only have a day to build a working solution. The search has to be very simple At first I was thinking LAMP but I'd rather not have to create it all from scratch and host it myself. That lead me to Google Spreadsheet as a database, this has the advantage that they already use google docs for everything and if my front end goes tits up they can still get to the data. Presuming none of you can think of some existing software which does exactly what I want the next step is to make a front end for the database. You can create forms for Google Spreadsheets but they only let you add new entries, I can make a Google Gadget but that will only let me implement the search as the Google Visualisation API provides read only access. It's at this point I'm stuck, should I just create a Java Servlet front end for the Google Spreadsheet and use the Java API to add, search and update? I know this is a broad question but I'm just asking 'What would you do?' to implement this system with a day's development time? Gav

  • Chrome: automatically redirect me to highest ranking search result, like Firefox does

    - by Siim K
How to emulate the Firefox (I'm using v3.6) address bar search redirection in Google Chrome? For example, if I type... imdb moon ...to the address bar and press Return in Firefox then it redirects me straight to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/ (and I've not visited the page before) When I try this is Chrome then I just get the google search page http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=imdb+moon So seems like Firefox redirects automatically to the highest ranking search result URL - is there a setting or add-on for Chrome to achieve the same behaviour?

  • outgoing mail for web app (multiple domains as sender)

    - by solid
I have a web app "myapp.com" that users can use to set up their own websites. Our application is written in php and should be able to do the following: send mails to our own users "from: [email protected]" send mails from our clients to their clients "from: [email protected]" We don't need to take care of incoming mails, just send out mails with the correct from and reply-to addresses. We cannot make this work using Google Apps (limited to our own domain in the from-field) and we cannot make google apps or google apps domains for all our clients, so we are looking for another simple to manage and set up solution. Does anyone have experience with this, please let me know! Thanks

Would I need to setup IIS to do this? The site is writeen in C# ASP.NET. So Could I perhaps just update the web.config file to route mail via google apps?

  • How is a Chromebook better than using Chrome browser on another OS?

    - by bigpopakap
I'm looking into getting a Chromebook as a lightweight device to use for basic functions. I'm fully aware of some of the limitations like no native apps, limited functionality while offline (though this is getting better with Google Drive's offline capabilities). Currently, I have a Windows machine on which I've installed Google Drive, so files in that folder are synced. And I use Chrome as my browser. So I have access to all the same apps (Drive, Calendar, Gmail, Google Music, etc.). Is there any advantage to having a Chromebook over my current setup, other than the speed of the lightweight Chrome OS?

  • Open mail-links with gmail in Chrome 9

    - by moose
it happens quite often, that I click a link over a persons name, just to see that it launches the default mail client of my system. I thought it would be a normal link, but it was a "mailto:"-link. I would like Chrome to start gmail, not my default email client. For Firefox, I had only to paste this in the URL-Bar: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail") Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Chrome 9. I have found this tutorial for Ubuntu, but I would like a solution in Chome. If it is only in Chrome, I can sync the settings. (So How do I make mailto: links open gmail in Ubuntu? doesn't fit) http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=2aad08042607a4eb&hl=en could be related to my problem, but there is no answer. Gnome: $ gnome-default-applications-properties set Email-Client to gnome-open https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s

  • Is OpenID too complicated?

    - by John Leidegren
I'm beginning to seriously doubt the OpenID community despite that fact that it works. I'm in the process of currently evaluating OpenID as an authentication service for 'this' site and while the promises are great, I just can't get it to work. And I'm really lost. I ask of the SO community to help me out here. Give me answers and show me examples so I can leverage this in the way it was meant to be. My scenario is very typical. I want to authenticate users through a specific Google Apps domain. If you have access to this Google Apps domain, then you have access to my web application. Where I get lost, is all the prerequisites and dependencies involved. What is XRD? What is Yadis? Why do I need XRD and Yadis? What do I need to do to deploy OpenID authentication on my website? Also, this is really important to me. When I login to SO, I use my Google Account. When I click the login button I'm presented with this confirmation page. Where I'm granting SO the right to use my Google Account credentials. Somehow, Google knows that it's "Stackoverflow.com" that's asking me if it's okay to login. And I wish to know what manner of control I have over this little text. I intend to deploy OpenID on several different domains but I would prefer if they would all work without having to be individually configured with special parameters, such as secret API keys and what not. However, I don't know for sure if this is a prerequisite of OpenID, that or the Federated Login API that Google provides.

  • Firefox: how to block cookies by name, not by site?

    - by deepc
Firefox allows to block all cookies on a site-by-site level. This is ok for the most part. However, it does not help with blocking only Google Analytics cookies. The GA cookie names start with __ut. Is there a Firefox add-on which can block all __ut* cookies? I know there are many cookie related add-ons for Firefox - but apparently all of them simply fine tune cookie site-by-site blocking, according to their descriptions. Hopefully I missed the one who can do this... I also know about Google's plugin to opt out of analytics. Installing a specific plug-in for that purpose (as opposed to an add-on) seems a bit overdone. Plus, I would have to trust Google with that and that is exactly what I don't.

  • Problems parsing Google Data Booksearch API XML in Ruby

    - by FrogBot
I'm trying to parse some XML I've gotten from the Google Data Booksearch API and I'm having trouble trying to target a specific element. Currently my code looks like so: require 'gdata' client = GData::Client::BookSearch.new feed = client.get("http://books.google.com/books/feeds/volumes?q=Foundation").to_xml books = [] feed.elements.each('entry') do |entry| book = { :title => entry.elements['title'].text, :author => entry.elements['dc:creator'].text, :book_id => entry.elements['dc:identifier'].text } books.push(book) end p books and that all works fine, but I want to add a thumbnail URL to the book hash. The tag with each book's thumbnail URL looks like so: <feed> <entry> ... <link rel="http://schemas.google.com/books/2008/thumbnail" type="image/x-unknown" href="http://bks6.books.google.com/books?id=ID5P7xbmcO8C&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&edge=curl&source=gbs_gdata"/> ... </entry> </feed> I want to grab the contents of the href attribute from this element and I'm not exactly sure how. Can anyone help me out here?

  • 100% height with fixed footer and embedded Google Map

    - by Carl
    I have a problem with a layout - it's not online anywhere, just local, but if you copy and paste the code below into an html page and run it locally you will see the same page I do. It's very nearly there. What I'm trying to achieve is a page with no scrollbars using up all available vertical space. Yes, I can set "overflow:hidden" on the container declaration and that helps, but it's not quite right. I want to actually have the google map surrounded with a 1em border. I have this on 3 sides but the 100% height declaration on the content div crashes the bottom border. If you don't realise the implications of a percentage-sized google map div, then the parent HAS to have a height declared for it to work. As the footer is absolute and outside of the flow, there is no "bottom" border to work to and the layout just doesn't work. The content div 100% height basically seems to take its size from the viewport and not the containing div. It's driving me mad... just can't seem to work out how to do this and I'd really appreciate some input. Start here: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head><title>Google map test</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false"></script> <style type="text/css"> html,body { margin:0; padding:0; height:100%; /* needed for container min-height */ background:fff; font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:small; color:#666; } h1 { font:1.5em georgia,serif; margin:0.5em 0; } h2 { font:1.25em georgia,serif; margin:0 0 0.5em; } div#container { position:relative; /* needed for footer positioning*/ margin:0 auto; /* center, not in IE5 */ width:960px; background:#fff; border-left:1px solid #ccc; border-right:1px solid #ccc; /*height:auto !important; real browsers */ height:100%; /* IE6: treaded as min-height*/ min-height:100%; /* real browsers */ } div#header { border-bottom:1px solid #ccc; border-left:1em solid #ccc; height:108px; position:relative; } div#header h1 { position:absolute; bottom: 0; left:0.5em; } div#header2 { border-bottom:1px solid #ccc; border-left:1em solid #999; height: 40px; position: relative; } div#header2 p { position:absolute; bottom: 0; left:0.5em; } div#headerInternal { border-bottom:1px solid #ccc; border-left:1em solid #cc3300; height: 40px; position: relative; } div#headerInternal p { position:absolute; bottom: 0; left:0.5em; } div#headerInternal2 { height: 40px; position: relative; } div#headerInternal2 p { position:absolute; bottom: 0; left:0.5em; } div#rightCol { float:right; width:29%; padding-bottom:5em; /* bottom padding for footer */ } div#content { float:left; width:70%; height:100%; /* fill that hole! */ border-right:1px solid #ccc; } div#content p { } div#footer { position:absolute; clear:both; width:100%; height:40px; bottom:0; /* stick to bottom */ background:#fff; border-top:1px solid #ccc; } div#footer p { padding:1em; margin:0; } .paddedContent { height:100%; margin: 1em; } </style> <script type="text/javascript"> function initialize() { var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(52.397, 1.644); var myOptions = { zoom: 8, center: latlng, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP }; var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions); } </script> </head> <body onload="initialize()"> <div id="container"> <div id="header"> <h1>Title here...</h1> </div> <div id="header2"> <p>Secondary menu...</p> </div> <div id="rightCol"> <div id="headerInternal2"> <p>Right Header</p> </div> <p class="paddedContent">This is the right column</p> </div> <div id="content"> <div id="headerInternal"> <p>Page Context Menu</p> </div> <div class="paddedContent"> <div id="map_canvas" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></div> </div> <div id="footer"> <p>This footer is absolutely positioned</p> </div> </div> </div> </body> </html>

  • How to "select file" with Python script? . Google App Engine . Python .

    - by draconisthe0ry
I'm trying to create an online application for a python function i have created. in my script, i input the path of my file for the computer (input_path = '/users/user/desktop/input.txt') but i'm not sure how to go about this using Google App Engine . I have the choice between 3 templates: flask, django, and bottle . I really do believe this question is relevant for people transitioning from scripts to web-based applications. Do I need to incorporate GUI stuff from Tkinter or something? There has to be a way to simply select a file to use for the input path in an interactive way using python scripts

  • Alert visualization recipe: Get out your blender, drop in some sp_send_dbmail, Google Charts API, add your favorite colors and sprinkle with html. Blend till it’s smooth and looks pretty enough to taste.

    - by Maria Zakourdaev
I really like database monitoring. My email inbox have a constant flow of different types of alerts coming from our production servers with all kinds of information, sometimes more useful and sometimes less useful. Usually database alerts look really simple, it’s usually a plain text email saying “Prod1 Database data file on Server X is 80% used. You’d better grow it manually before some query triggers the AutoGrowth process”. Imagine you could have received email like the one below.  In addition to the alert description it could have also included the the database file growth chart over the past 6 months. Wouldn’t it give you much more information whether the data growth is natural or extreme? That’s truly what data visualization is for. Believe it or not, I have sent the graph below from SQL Server stored procedure without buying any additional data monitoring/visualization tool.   Would you like to visualize your database alerts like I do? Then like myself, you’d love the Google Charts. All you need to know is a little HTML and have a mail profile configured on your SQL Server instance regardless of the SQL Server version. First of all, I hope you know that the sp_send_dbmail procedure has a great parameter @body_format = ‘HTML’, which allows us to send rich and colorful messages instead of boring black and white ones. All that we need is to dynamically create HTML code. This is how, for instance, you can create a table and populate it with some data: DECLARE @html varchar(max) SET @html = '<html>' + '<H3><font id="Text" style='color: Green;'>Top Databases: </H3>' + '<table border="1" bordercolor="#3300FF" style='background-color:#DDF8CC' width='70%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='3'>' + '<tr><font color="Green"><th>Database Name</th><th>Size</th><th>Physical Name</th></tr>' + CAST( (SELECT TOP 10                             td = name,'',                             td = size * 8/1024 ,'',                             td = physical_name              FROM sys.master_files               ORDER BY size DESC             FOR XML PATH ('tr'),TYPE ) AS VARCHAR(MAX)) + '</table>' EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail @recipients = '[email protected]', @subject ='Top databases', @body = @html, @body_format = 'HTML' This is the result:   If you want to add more visualization effects, you can use Google Charts Tools https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/index which is a free and rich library of data visualization charts, they’re also easy to populate and embed. There are two versions of the Google Charts Image based charts: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/gallery/chart_gall This is an old version, it’s officially deprecated although it will be up for a next few years or so. I really enjoy using this one because it can be viewed within the email body. For mobile devices you need to change the “Load remote images” property in your email application configuration.           Charts based on JavaScript classes: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery This API is newer, with rich and highly interactive charts, and it’s much more easier to understand and configure. The only downside of it is that they cannot be viewed within the email body. Outlook, Gmail and many other email clients, as part of their security policy, do not run any JavaScript that’s placed within the email body. However, you can still enjoy this API by sending the report as an email attachment. Here is an example of the old version of Google Charts API, sending the same top databases report as in the previous example but instead of a simple table, this script is using a pie chart right from  the T-SQL code DECLARE @html  varchar(8000) DECLARE @Series  varchar(800),@Labels  varchar(8000),@Legend  varchar(8000);     SET @Series = ''; SET @Labels = ''; SET @Legend = ''; SELECT TOP 5 @Series = @Series + CAST(size * 8/1024 as varchar) + ',',                         @Labels = @Labels +CAST(size * 8/1024 as varchar) + 'MB'+'|',                         @Legend = @Legend + name + '|' FROM sys.master_files ORDER BY size DESC SELECT @Series = SUBSTRING(@Series,1,LEN(@Series)-1),         @Labels = SUBSTRING(@Labels,1,LEN(@Labels)-1),         @Legend = SUBSTRING(@Legend,1,LEN(@Legend)-1) SET @html =   '<H3><font color="Green"> '+@@ServerName+' top 5 databases : </H3>'+    '<br>'+    '<img src="http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?'+    'chf=bg,s,DDF8CC&'+    'cht=p&'+    'chs=400x200&'+    'chco=3072F3|7777CC|FF9900|FF0000|4A8C26&'+    'chd=t:'+@Series+'&'+    'chl='+@Labels+'&'+    'chma=0,0,0,0&'+    'chdl='+@Legend+'&'+    'chdlp=b"'+    'alt="'+@@ServerName+' top 5 databases" />'              EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail @recipients = '[email protected]',                             @subject = 'Top databases',                             @body = @html,                             @body_format = 'HTML' This is what you get. In the example below, the sp_send_email procedure uses the parameter @query which will be executed at the time that sp_send_dbemail is executed and the HTML result of this execution will be attached to the email. It can be used for applicative reports if you need high levels of customization that you cannot achieve using standard methods like SSRS. If you need more information on how to customize the charts, you can try the following: Image Based Charts wizard https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_wizard  Live Image Charts Playground https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_playground Image Based Charts Parameters List https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_params Java Script Charts Playground https://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/?type=visualization Use the above examples as a starting point for your procedures and I’d be more than happy to hear of your implementations of the above techniques. • An alternative to Google Talk, AIM, MSN, et al [closed]

    - by mkaito
I'm not entirely sure whether this part of stack exchange is the most adequate for my question, but it would seem to me that people sharing this kind of concern would converge either here, or possibly on a more unix-specific sub site. Either way, here goes. Background Feel free to skip to The Question, below. This should, however, help those interested understand where I'm coming from, and where I expect to get, messaging-wise. My online talking place-to-go has been IRC for the last fifteen years. I think it's a great protocol, and clients out there are very good. I still use, and will always continue to use IRC for most of my chat needs. But then, there is private instant messaging. While IRC can solve this with queries and DCC chats, the protocol just isn't meant to work too well on intermittent connections, such as a mobile device, where you can often walk around places with low signal. I used MSN for a while, but didn't like it. The concept was awesome, but I think Microsoft didn't get the implementation quite right. When they started adding all that eye candy, and my buddies started flooding me with custom icons and buzzing my screen to it's knees, I shut my account and told folks that missed me to just email or call me. Much whining happened, I got called many weird things for not using MSN, but folks eventually got over it. Next, Google Talk came along, and seemed to be a lot better than MSN ever was. The protocol was open, so I could use whatever client I felt a fancy for. With the advent of smart phones, I just got myself a gtalk client on the phone, and have had a really decent integrated mostly-universal IM solution. Over the last few months, all Google services have been feeling flaky. IMs will often arrive anywhere between twenty minutes and one hour after being sent, clients will randomly disconnect, client priorities seem to work sometimes, and sometimes just a random device of those connected will get an IM. I think the time has come to look for greener grass. The Question It's rather hard to put what I'm looking for into precise words. I guess I just want something that is kind of like MSN/Gtalk, but that doesn't let me down when I need it. IRC is pretty much perfect, but the protocol just isn't designed to work well on mobile devices. Really, at this point I'm considering sticking to IRC for desktop messaging, and SMS/email on the phone, but I hope that in this day and age there is something better out there.

  • Display tracert on Google or Bing Maps

    - by WebDevHobo
Is there a program of perhaps website that can display a list of ip-adresses on Google or Bing maps? For instance, if I do tracert -d www.youtube.com, I'll get a bunch of IP-addresses, displaying the path my request travelled. I'd think it funny to see this on a map, but I find it hard to enter all these IP-addresses manually. Does anybody know a program that can do this?

  • Google Indexed an Unlinked Page

    - by Yar
Google indexed a page on a site of mine that was not linked from any other page, ever. No one has ever put a link to it, and the directory contents were not browsable. How could this happen? I thought crawlers have no way to include a page that is not linked.
