  Latest roll up patch for 10.1.3.4.1 is now out in the wild. Yep, there are bug fixes but the guys have implemented some great enhancements. I'll be covering some of them over the coming weeks, from collapsing bookmarks in your PDFs to better MS AD support to 'true' Excel templates, yes you read that correctly! Patch is available from Oracle's support site. Just search for patch 9546699. Here's the contents and readme, apologies for the big list but at least you can search against it for a particular fix. • Creating a dynamic proxy generator – Part 1 – Creating the Assembly builder, Module builder and cach

  I’ve recently started a project with a few mates to learn the ins and outs of Dependency Injection, AOP and a number of other pretty crucial patterns of development as we’ve all been using these patterns for a while but have relied totally on third part solutions to do the magic. We thought it would be interesting to really get into the details by rolling our own IoC container and hopefully learn a lot on the way, and you never know, we might even create an excellent framework. The open source project is called Rapid IoC and is hosted at http://rapidioc.codeplex.com/ One of the most interesting tasks for me is creating the dynamic proxy generator for enabling Aspect Orientated Programming (AOP). In this series of articles, I’m going to track each step I take for creating the dynamic proxy generator and I’ll try my best to explain what everything means - mainly as I’ll be using Reflection.Emit to emit a fair amount of intermediate language code (IL) to create the proxy types at runtime which can be a little taxing to read. It’s worth noting that building the proxy is without a doubt going to be slightly painful so I imagine there will be plenty of areas I’ll need to change along the way. Anyway lets get started…   Part 1 - Creating the Assembly builder, Module builder and caching mechanism Part 1 is going to be a really nice simple start, I’m just going to start by creating the assembly, module and type caches. The reason we need to create caches for the assembly, module and types is simply to save the overhead of recreating proxy types that have already been generated, this will be one of the important steps to ensure that the framework is fast… kind of important as we’re calling the IoC container ‘Rapid’ – will be a little bit embarrassing if we manage to create the slowest framework. The Assembly builder The assembly builder is what is used to create an assembly at runtime, we’re going to have two overloads, one will be for the actual use of the proxy generator, the other will be mainly for testing purposes as it will also save the assembly so we can use Reflector to examine the code that has been created. An AssemblyBuilder is then constructed with the current AppDomain and depending on the overload used, it is either just run in the current context or it is set up ready for saving. It is then added to the DynamicModuleCache. I’ve spent a fair amount of time thinking about the type of collection I should use to store the types and have finally decided that for the time being I’m going to use a generic dictionary. This may change when I can actually performance test the proxy generator but the time being I think it makes good sense in theory, mainly as it pretty much maintains it’s performance with varying numbers of items – almost constant (0)1. Plus I won’t ever need to loop through the items which is not the dictionaries strong point. Hopefully they should be clear enough, the Get is a TryGet as I do not want the dictionary to throw an exception if a proxy doesn’t exist within the cache. Other than that I’ve decided to create a key using the SHA1CryptoServiceProvider, this may change but my initial though is the SHA1 algorithm is pretty fast to put together using the provider and it is also very unlikely to have any hashing collisions. (there are some maths behind how unlikely this is – here’s the wiki if you’re interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA_hash_functions)   Anyway, that’s the end of part 1 – although I haven’t started any of the fun stuff (by fun I mean hairpulling, teeth grating Relfection.Emit style fun), I’ve got the basis of the DynamicProxy in place so all we have to worry about now is creating the types, interceptor classes, method invocation information classes and finally a really nice fluent interface that will abstract all of the hard-core craziness away and leave us with a lightning fast, easy to use AOP framework. • Adjust timezone of an AVM Fritz!Box 7390

  It's been a while that I purchased an AVM Fritz!Box 7390 but since I'm using this 'PABX' here in Mauritius, I'm not really happy about the wrong time in the logs or handsets connected. Lately, I had some spare time to address this issue, and the following article describes how to adjust the timezone settings in general. The original idea came from an FAQ found in c't 21/11 (for a 7270 written in German language) but I added a couple of things based on other resources online. The following tutorial may be valid for other models, too. Use your common sense and think before you act. Brief introduction to AVM Fritz!Box devices The Fritz!Box series of AVM has been around for more than a decade and those little 'red boxes' have a high level of versatility for your small office or home. High-speed connections, secure WLAN and convenient telephony make a home network out of any network. Whether it's a computer, tablet or smartphone, any device can be connected to the FRITZ!Box. And best of all, installation is so simple that users will be online in a matter of minutes. If you want to have peace of your mind in your small network then a Fritz!Box is the easiest way to achieve that. I'm using my box primarly as WiFi access point, VoIP gateway and media server but only because it came in second after my Linux system. Limitations in the administrative Web UI Unfortunately, there are no possibilities to adjust the timezone settings in the Web UI at all - even not in Expert mode. I assume that this is part of the 'simplification' provided by AVM's design team. That's okay, as long as you reside in Central Europe, and the implicit time handling is correct for your location. Adjusting the timezone I got my device through an order at Amazon Germany already some time ago, and honestly I wasn't bothered too much about the pre-configured (fixed) timezone setting - CET or CEST depending on daylight saving. But you know, it's that kind of splinter at the back of your head that keeps nagging and bothering you indirectly. So, finally I sat down yesterday evening and did a quick research on how to change the timezone. Even though there are a number of results, I read the FAQ from the c't magazine first, as I consider this as a trusted and safe source of information. Of course, it is most important to avoid to 'brick' your device. You've been warned - No support Tinkering with the configuration of any AVM devices seems to be a violation of their official support channels. So, be warned and continue onlyin case that you're sure about what you are going to do. The following solutions are 'as-is' and they worked for my box flawlessly but may cause an issue in your case. Don't blame me... Solution 1 - Backup, modify and restore That's the way as described in the c't article and a couple of other forum postings I found online, mainly from Australia. Login the administrative Web UI and navigate to 'System => Einstellungen sichern' (System => Backup configuration) and store your current configuration to a local file on your machine. Despite some online postings it is not necessary to specify a password in order to secure or encrypt your backup. IMHO, this only adds another unnecessary layer of complexity to the process. Anyway, next you should create a another copy of your settings and keep it unmodified. That's our safety net to restore the current settings in case that we might have to issue a factory setting reset to the box. Now, open the configuration file with an advanced text editor which is capable to deal with Unix carriage returns properly - Windows Notepad doesn't do the job but Wordpad or Notepad++. Personally, I don't care and simply use geany, gedit or nano on Linux. In total there are 3 modifications that we have to apply to the configuration file - one new line and two adjustments. First, we have to add an instruction near the top of file that overrides the device internal checksum validation. Without this line, your settings won't be accepted. Caution: The drectives are case-sensitve and your outcome should read something like this: **** FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7390 CONFIGURATION EXPORTPassword=$$$$<ignore>FirmwareVersion=84.05.52CONFIG_INSTALL_TYPE=iks_16MB_xilinx_4eth_2ab_isdn_nt_te_pots_wlan_usb_host_dect_64415OEM=avmCountry=049Language=deNoChecks=yes**** CFGFILE:ar7.cfg/* * /var/flash/ar7.cfg * Mon Jul 29 10:49:18 2013 */ar7cfg {... Then search for the expression 'timezone' and you should find a section like this one (~ line 1113): timezone_manual {        enabled = no;        offset = 0;        dst_enabled = no;        TZ_string = "";        name = "";} We would like to manually handle the timezone setting in our device and therefore we have to enable it and set the proper value for Mauritius. The configuration block should like so afterwards: timezone_manual {        enabled = yes;        offset = 0;        dst_enabled = no;        TZ_string = "MUT-4";        name = "";} We specify the designation and the offset in hours of the timezone we would like to have. Caution: The offset indicates the value one has to add to the local time to arrive at UTC. More details are described in the Explanation of TZ strings. Mauritius has GMT+4 which means that we have to substract 4 hours from the local time to have UTC. Finally, we restore the modified configuration file via the administrative Web UI under 'System => Einstellungen sichern => Wiederherstellen' (System => Backup configuration => Restore). This triggers a reboot of the device, so please be patient and wait until the Web UI displays the login dialog again. Good luck! Solution 2 - Telnet A more elegant, read: technically interesting, way to adjust configuration settings in your Fritz!Box is to access it directly through Telnet. By default AVM disables that protocol channel and you have to enable it with a connected telephone. In order to activate the telnet service dial the following combination: #96*7* #96*8* (to disable telnet again after work has been completed) If you're using an AVM handset like the Fritz!Fon then you will receive a confirmation message on the display like so: telnetd ein Next, depending on your favourite operating system, you either launch a Command prompt in Windows or a terminal in Linux, get your Admin password ready, and you connect to your box like so: $ telnet fritz.box Trying 192.168.1.1...Connected to fritz.box.Escape character is '^]'.password: BusyBox v1.19.3 (2012-10-12 14:52:09 CEST) built-in shell (ash)Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.ermittle die aktuelle TTYtty is "/dev/pts/0"Console Ausgaben auf dieses Terminal umgelenkt# That's it, you are connected and we can continue to change the configuration manually. In order to adjust the timezone setting we have to open the ar7.cfg file. As we are now operating in a specialised environment, we only have limited capabilities at hand. One of those is a reduced version of vi - nvi. Let's open a second browser window with the fine manual page of nvi and start to edit our configuration file: # nvi /var/flash/ar7.cfg In our configuration file, we have to navigate to the timezone directives. The easiest way is to search for the expression 'timezone' by typing in the following: /timezone    (press Enter/Return) Now, we should see the exact lines of code like in the backed up version: timezone_manual {                                                                            enabled = no;                                                          offset = 0;                                                         dst_enabled = no;                                                   TZ_string = "";                                                     name = "";                                                        } And of course, we apply the same changes as described in the previous section: timezone_manual {                                                                            enabled = yes;                                                          offset = 0;                                                         dst_enabled = no;                                                   TZ_string = "MUT-4";                                                     name = "";                                                        } Finally, we have to write our changes back to the file and apply the new settings. :wq    (press Enter/Return) # ar7cfgchanged That's it! Finally, close the telnet session by pressing Ctrl+] and enter 'quit'. Additional ideas... There are a couple of more possibilities to enhance and to extend the usability of a Fritz!Box. There are lots of resources available on the net, but I'd like to name a few here. Especially for Linux users it is essential to be able to connect to any device remotely in a  safe and secure way. And the installation of a SSH server on the box would be a first step to improve this situation, also to avoid to run telnet after all. Sometimes, there might be problems in your VoIP connections, feel free to adjust the settings of codecs and connection handling, too. I guess, you'll get the idea... The only frontiers are in your mind.

Isn't "Google Play services" app the same as the "Google Play" app? Another question I have, due to lack of documentation: what is the scope parameter for? • C# creating a queue to handle jobs triggered by FileSystemWatcher

  I have built a small tray app that will watch a folder and when a new file is added it runs a job. The job is to watch for video files and convert them to .mp4 using handBrakeCli. I have all this logic worked out. The problem I run into is that if there is more than one file I want it to queue the job til the prior one is complete. I am fairly new to c# and I am not sure of the best way to handle this. one idea is to create a queue somehow, a file to store the commands in order maybe, then execute the next one after the process is complete. We are dealing with large movie files here so it can take a while.   I searched, but surprisingly couldn't find an answer. I have a long NSString that I want to shorten. I want the maximum length to be around 20 characters. I read somewhere that the best solution is to use substringWithRange. Is this the best way to truncate a string? NSRange stringRange = {0,20}; NSString *myString = @"This is a string, it's a very long string, it's a very long string indeed"; NSString *shortString = [myString substringWithRange:stringRange]; It seems a little delicate (crashes if the string is shorter than the maximum length). I'm also not sure if it's Unicode-safe. Is there a better way to do it? Does anyone have a nice category for this?

  i am using visual studio team system 2008 and VSS 2005. I took a latest copy of a project from VSS. Now when i try to open that project, it is showing error "This version of visual studio does not support source control" and " Unexpected error enocountered. Restart the application Error : no such interfaces are supported File : vsee\internal\vscomptr.inl". When i open solution explorer, all projects are showing as unavailable. I tried VS--Tools--options-- source control--plugin selection and set plug in to Microsoft "Visual source safe" and when i open "Environment" tab it is showing "an error occured while loading this property page" Can someone help me???

• Troubleshooting .NET "Fatal Execution Engine Error"

  Summary: I periodically get a .NET Fatal Execution Engine Error on an application which I cannot seem to debug. The dialog that comes up only offers to close the program or send information about the error to Microsoft. I've tried looking at the more detailed information but I don't know how to make use of it. Error: The error is visible in Event Viewer under Applications and is as follows: .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3607 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A09795E) (80131506) The computer running it is Windows XP Professional SP 3. (Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 2.0 GB of RAM) Other .NET-based projects that lack multi-threaded downloading (see below) seem to run just fine. Application: The application is written in C#/.NET 3.5 using VS2008, and installed via a setup project. The app is multi-threaded and downloads data from multiple web servers using System.Net.HttpWebRequest and its methods. I've determined that the .NET error has something to do with either threading or HttpWebRequest but I haven't been able to get any closer as this particular error seems impossible to debug. I've tried handling errors on many levels, including the following in Program.cs: // handle UI thread exceptions Application.ThreadException += new ThreadExceptionEventHandler(Application_ThreadException); // handle non-UI thread exceptions AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += new UnhandledExceptionEventHandler(CurrentDomain_UnhandledException); Application.EnableVisualStyles(); Application.SetCompatibleTextRenderingDefault(false); // force all windows forms errors to go through our handler Application.SetUnhandledExceptionMode(UnhandledExceptionMode.CatchException); More Notes and What I've Tried... Installed Visual Studio 2008 on the target machine and tried running in debug mode, but the error still occurs, with no hint as to where in source code it occurred. When running the program from its installed version (Release) the error occurs more frequently, usually within minutes of launching the application. When running the program in debug mode inside of VS2008, it can run for hours or days before generating the error. Reinstalled .NET 3.5 and made sure all updates are applied. Broke random cubicle objects in frustration. Rewritten parts of code that deal with threading and downloading in attempts to catch and log exceptions, though logging seemed to aggravate the problem (and never provided any data). Question: What steps can I take to troubleshoot or debug this kind of error? Memory dumps and the like seem to be the next step, but I'm not experienced at interpreting them. Perhaps there's something more I can do in the code to try and catch errors... It would be nice if the "Fatal Execution Engine Error" was more informative, but internet searches have only told me that it's a common error for a lot of .NET-related items.

• MMC Snapin development: 'MMC not responding' - Is there a timeout that can be set for debugging?

  So I'm writing a snapin for MMC 3. Quite often I have the debugger attached and I'm stepping through some code. MMC has some kind of a fail safe for misbehaving snapins that automatically unloads them after a timeout. The message is 'This snap-in is not responding'. After that MMC can behave as though your snap-in has been unloaded. fair enough, it's not responding because I'm stepping through the debugger. However, the timeout is very small for development. Does anyone know of a way of increasing the timeout? I googled and couldn't find anything. Checking the MMC registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC and couldn't see anything there. I also checked the snap-in registry location under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns. No luck. I feel like there must be a way of increasing the timeout as this is something the devs as Microsoft must have encountered this problem.

  After installing and using Visual Studio 2010, I'm seeing some newer file types (at least with C++ projects ... don't know about the other types) as compared to 2008. e.g. .sdf, .opensdf, which I guess are the replacement for ncb files with Intellisense info stored in SQL Server Compact files? I also notice .log files are generated, which appear to be build logs. Given this, what's safe to add to my global ignore pattern? Off the bat, I'd assume .sdf, .opensdf, but what else?

  Hi I am running webapplication in tomcat 5.5.It will throw Invalid state Exception Eg: Illegal access: this web application instance has been stopped already. C ould not load com.mysql.jdbc.SQLError. The eventual following stack trace is ca used by an error thrown for debugging purposes as well as to attempt to terminat e the thread which caused the illegal access, and has no functional impact. java.lang.IllegalStateException at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1273) How to resolve this issue.

• iPad application crash in Apple review - cannot replicate in simulator, have crash log

I have tried repeatedly to submit an application to Apple (iPad in this case) that is crashing on their end when testing but I cannot replicated the situation on my end (obviously I only have the damned simulator to work with at this point). If retrieving the album cover fails for some reason the object is filled with a default image and then added. The last line of the code is what's showing up in the crash log. It runs fine in the simulator but crashes 100% in testing on device apparently. Can anyone tell me what I am missing here?

It starts with a ASIHttpRequest complete block. • Rails Resque workers fail with PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly

  I have site running rails application and resque workers running in production mode, on Ubuntu 9.10, Rails 2.3.4, ruby-ee 2010.01, PostgreSQL 8.4.2 Workers constantly raised errors: PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly. My best guess is that master resque process establishes connection to db (e.g. authlogic does that when use User.acts_as_authentic), while loading rails app classes, and that connection becomes corrupted in fork()ed process (on exit?), so next forked children get kind of broken global ActiveRecord::Base.connection I could reproduce very similar behaviour with this sample code imitating fork/processing in resque worker. (AFAIK, users of libpq recommended to recreate connections in forked process anyway, otherwise it's not safe ) But, the odd thing is that when I use pgbouncer or pgpool-II instead of direct pgsql connection, such errors do not appear. So, the question is where and how should I dig to find out why it is broken for plain connection and is working with connection pools? Or reasonable workaround?
