• apache server not working after installing zend server

  i have apache installed in my redhat 5.3 server machine. and i was trying to install zend server. i installed zend server with install.sh file in directory /var/zend. in my windows machine after installling zend server community edition i was able to access apache server as well as zend server. but in my linux machine localhost displays nothing and localhost:10081 shows zend server. what can i do to run my localhost? or should i seperately install apache?

• How to get Windows Server 2008 VM to use multiple cores

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors. • Blogging from Office RT

  During the last Build conference all attendees were given a brand new sparkling exciting Surface RT device (I love that machine despite its name but that's beside the point). On it came a version of Office 2013 RT, or better: the preview version. Now, I translated that term "Preview" to "Beta". Which is OK, since I've been using a lot of beta products from Microsoft and they all were great. And then I wanted to post a blogposting from Word. I knew I could, I have been doing this for a long time (I prefer Live Writer but that isn't available on Windows 8 RT). So I wrote the entry and hit "Publish". Instead of my blogsite I got a nice non-descriptive error telling me I couldn't post. So I fired up my other (Intel based) Win8 tablet, opened Word RT Preview, it loaded my blogpost (you've got to love the automatic synchronization through Skydrive) and tried from that machine. Same error. So, I installed Live Writer (remember, the other machine is Intel based) and posted from there. That worked like a charm. Apparently, there was something wrong with Word. I gave up and didn't think about it anymore. Yet… what you're reading now is written in Word 2013 RT on my Surface RT. So what did do? Simple: I updated from the Preview version to the final version. That's all there was to it. So…. If you're still on the preview I urge you to upgrade. You need to go to the "classic desktop update" window instead of going through the Windows Store App style update since Office is a desktop system, but once you do that you'll have the full version as well. Lets say you have a simple unix operating system that you need only build and run on, but you want to do all of the development on another machine. • Windows File Sharing - Long Initial Delay

  I have two Windows 7 machines connected to a router. I created a shared folder on machine A, and I can access it from machine B. The transfer speed is great. However, there is sometimes a long initial delay when I try to access the shared folder from machine B. I'll click to open the folder, and windows explorer pauses for a few minutes before actually loading the contents of the folder. After it loads, however, I can navigate the subfolders and edit files with no noticeable delay. Then, some time later, I will get the huge delay on saving a file, after which subsequent saves have no delay. What is the problem here, and how can I fix it?

• Virtualbox will run from 32bit installation CD but not 64bit.

  I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.

• How can create the smallest possible mirror of the archive?

  I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. This is how the final thing will look like. The host and client are both going to be my laptop, I Googled and came across apt-mirror and some other packages. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ Any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree. Which is where I have to do this work. So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors. So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.

• MAAS/JuJu Clarifications

  I really love the concept of MAAS underlying an OpenStack implementation, but there are a few questions about MAAS that I am not entirely clear on. Should all hosts be set to network boot at all times or after they have been registered and allocated as a service, should they boot to disk? After juju bootstrap is executed, I turn on the machine that has been allocated (note WoL isn't working, I suspect it's being blocked on the network), the machine boot's up and then juju status executes correct, agent running and all that good stuff. If I 'reboot' the machine (testing power failure/problem whatever), juju status comes back but the agent-state is no longer in running state, and so far I have to destroy the environment and restart. In all cases I have never been able to deploy any services to any of the other nodes. I deploy the service with juju, note which node it was assigned, and then start the system. The system just boots up into a basic node. If I SSH to it I have to enter password, so it's not setting up the ssh key or anything. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS systems and HP GL360G7 hosts. The MAAS management server is running as a VM but all on the same network. At this point I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or if there is a problem somewhere else. Is the idea that anytime a host is rebooted it should be rebuilt from the ground up, or is something else going on behind the scene to tell it to boot the local image. If the latter, why doesn't the agent start on a system that has been successfully setup before (juju bootstrapped system)?

• Assign PowerShell script to run at startup using PowerShell on Window Server 2012

  I'm trying to write a PowerShell script that will run when a Windows 2012 instance is created on AWS using the configuration tools provided by AWS. My problem is that I want to change the name of the machine once it has started up, restart the machine and carry on set up process after. The main reason for this is that one of the applications, Boundary, installed in the set up process takes the name of the server when first installed. It is then doesn't seem possible to change it's name in their portal. Ideally I would have two PowerShell scripts, one to start the set up process, initialised through AWS and another that runs the first time the machine restarts. This second script would ideally be queued to run on the next start by the initial set up script. So I guess my question are: Is this possible? How would I go about doing this. My Google foo is letting me down here so any answers would be appreciated.

• New Oracles VM RAC template with support for oracle vm 3 built-in

  The RAC team did it again (thanks Saar!) - another awesome set of Oracle VM templates published and uploaded to My Oracle Support. You can find the main page here. What's special about the latest version of DeployCluster is that it integrates tightly with Oracle VM 3 manager. It basically is an Oracle VM frontend that helps start VMs, pass arguments down automatically and there is absolutely no need to log into the Oracle VM servers or the guests. Once it completes, you have an entire Oracle RAC database setup ready to go. Here's a short summary of the steps : Set up an Oracle VM 3 server pool Download the Oracle VM RAC template from oracle.com Import the template into Oracle VM using Oracle VM Manager repository - import Create a public and private network in Oracle VM Manager in the network tab Configure the template with the right public and private virtual networks Create a set of shared disks (physical or virtual) to assign to the VMs you want to create (for ASM/at least 5) Clone a set of VMs from the template (as many RAC nodes as you plan to configure) With Oracle VM 3.1 you can clone with a number so one clone command for, say 8 VMs is easy. Assign the shared devices/disks to the cloned VMs Create a netconfig.ini file on your manager node or a client where you plan to run DeployCluster This little text file just contains the IP addresses, hostnames etc for your cluster. It is a very simple small textfile. Run deploycluster.py with the VM names as argument Done. At this point, the tool will connect to Oracle VM Manager, start the VMs and configure each one, Configure the OS (Oracle Linux) Configure the disks with ASM Configure the clusterware (CRS) Configure ASM Create database instances on each node. Now you are ready to log in, and use your x node database cluster. x No need to download various products from various websites, click on trial licenses for the OS, go to a Virtual Machine store with sample and test versions only - this is production ready and supported. • Why does Windows 7 need hardware virtualization to run XP mode?

  I have a MacBook Pro and I've run VMware Fusion's unity mode and Parallels' cohesion mode along side the Mac OS X, and both work pretty seamlessly. I figured XP Mode in Windows 7 would be something similar, but I then learned my machine requires hardware virtualization support, which it does not have. My machine is an HP dc7800. That's a dual core 2.2GHz machine with 4GBs of RAM. Certainly it has the horsepower to run a virtual environment alongside the primary OS. I'm wondering: 1) Why Microsoft decided to make hardware virtualization a requirement and 2) What am I missing? Is the experience similar to Parallel's cohesion mode / Fusion's unity mode? Thanks!

• How to remove the graphical user interface?

  Ok my question is that, I want to run a heavy application, on a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox) with just 2 GB RAM (Windows 7 32Bit Host has 4 GB, 3.5 GB effective). Initially I thought of installing Ubuntu Server 12.04.1, which doesn't come with a GUI, so I thought it would be efficient in performance, but I have only Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop. My question is, is it possible to remove the GUI parts in Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (Not Server), keeping only the core OS, after installation in a virtual machine? Or, is there anyway to improve the performance of the OS? If you need more information, I am ready to provide. I don't want the GUI or anything, even a small terminal window is fine for me, I can access files through FTP.

• OpenSuSE 11 iscsi target: HFS+ partition not seen by clients

  I have an openSuSE machine as a file server, which has an Areca 1880i inside. It contains several partitions. There is a dm-0 and a dm-1 partition, for example. The partitions are formatted as EFI system partitions, with HFS+ file systems. My opensuse could not read them but the iscsitarget exported them for my Macs. This worked for more than a year. For some reason now, after some network problems which were "solved", my dm-0 partition is not seen anymore! I suspect it is a problem on the iscsi target side, i.e. the OpenSuSE machine. Can anyone suggest what I should look into? Any logs, any settings on the linux machine? None of my macs can access the partition, and they use different client software!! Thanks!

• Packet loss with all adapters on one PC only on the LAN

  I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine that is losing up to 20% of IP packets on both adapters - wireless & LAN. Browser traffic appears to be affected the most, but it is happening to all protocols. All other computers on the network are functioning fine. If I ping from my faulty machine to any machine on the LAN (wired or wirelessly), including the router/gateway and internet sites, I get up to 20% packet loss. If I do the following commands: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew then I sometimes get my network performance back for a matter of a few seconds to less than a couple of minutes. Rebooting also works for a short period of time. This problem has been occurring for a couple of months and is getting worse. The computer used to work just fine. I updated the wireless adapter firmware the other day with no effect. Does anyone know what is happening?

• MaaS minimum requirements with juju-jitsu?

  I've browsed through so many different sites and found so much contradictory information. As I am getting tired of this and do belive this question affects many other users, so I would like to collect the "once and for all times" answer. Unfortunately, the documentation on MaaS and Juju is ... well, not the best, sorry to say that. What are the minimum system requirements for setting up a MaaS cluster, which is going to be orchestrated with juju-jitsu? Do they need to have the exact system specifications or can I just combine different hardware? What are the minimum requirements for the master machine? E.g. "You need at least 8GB of RAM, a dual core CPU with at least 3.0 GHz." How many machines to I need to deploy MaaS on? I've read six machines, nine machines, and so on. I clearly want to know: "You need one for the Master and e.g. five nodes." Do I need to attach as many NICs (network interface cards) to my master machine as there are nodes, or can I simply attach two NICs and a switch? One NIC for connecting to the internet, one for handling the MaaS tasks, connected to a switch, which connects my nodes to the master? Is Juju now ready for local deployment? The last time I experimented with juju and had to reboot my machine, the services orchestrated by juju were gone. This was an issue I also found on the official juju site. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the documentation is not the best, so I could not find the necessary info on that again. So: Can I use juju on a local environment or will a reboot break my setup?

• How can we control the device driver load order in Windows XP ?

  We are trying to install both an HP scanner and a Kodak scanner on an XP machine and the problem is that that HP's scanner driver always places itself into the first and default scanner device position. We are using an automation software on that machine which must use the Kodak scanner as the default scanner. The HP flatbed isn't needed to be the default scanner on that machine. It will always be used manually and through its own software. Our developers did some research 2 years ago couldn't find a solution. Nowadays we are preparing to expand our user base and this problem did surface again on machines with the same configuration. I did a more aggresive search pn the net and found some tips like this one : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115486 I couldn't realize how to suit this solution to my scenario. Could someone please point me to the right direction ?

• SceneManagers as systems in entity system or as a core class used by a system?

  It seems entity systems are really popular here. Links posted by other users convinced me of the power of such system and I decided to try it. (Well, that and my original code getting messy) In my project, I originally had a SceneManager class that maintained needed logic and structures to organize the scene (QuadTree, 2D game). Before rendering I call selectRect() and pass the x,y of the camera and the width and height of the screen and then obtain a minimized list containing only visible entities ordered from back to front. Now with Systems, originally in my first attempt my Render system required to get added all entities it should handle. This may sound like the correct approach but I realized this was not efficient. Trying to optimize It I reused the SceneManager class internally in the Renderer system, but then I realized I needed methods such as selectRect() in others systems too (AI principally) and make the SceneManager accessible globally again. Currently I converted SceneManager to a system, and ended up with the following interface (only relevant methods): /// Base system interface class System { public: virtual void tick (double delta_time) = 0; // (methods to add and remove entities) }; typedef std::vector<Entity*> EntitiesVector; /// Specialized system interface to allow query the scene class SceneManager: public System { public: virtual EntitiesVector& cull () = 0; /// Sets the entity to be used as the camera and replaces previous ones. virtual void setCamera (Entity* entity) = 0; }; class SceneRenderer // Not a system { vitual void render (EntitiesVector& entities) = 0; }; Also I could not guess how to convert renderers to systems. My game separates logic updates from screen updates, my main class have a tick() method and a render() method that may not be called the same times. In my first attempt renderers were systems but they was saved in a separated manager, updated only in render() and not in tick() like all other systems. I realized that was silly and simply created a SceneRenderer interface and give up about converting them to systems, but that may be for another question. Then... something does not feel right, isn't it? If I understood correctly a system should not depend on another or even count with another system exposing an specific interface. Each system should care only about its entities, or nodes (as optimization, so they have direct references to relevant components without having to constantly call the component() or getComponent() method of the entity).

• Should I disable write caching on my Windows 2008 VM?

  I have a Windows Server 2008 x64 Standard virtual machine that runs on a machine with a hardware RAID controller, a Perc 6/i, which has a battery on-board. Doing everything I can for additional performance, I think I should disable this. Is this very dangerous though? My understand is that Battery Backed Write Caching gives a performance boost to the host OS, telling it the write was complete when they are still sitting in flash waiting to be written. However, I can't see how it would be detrimental to performance, but is there a gain (even if marginal) to enabling it / disabling it? P.s. There machine has a backup power. • Importing Outlook 2007 rules error

  I'm trying to move an Outlook 2007 account (POP3, no Exchange) to a new machine and I'm having trouble importing the rules from the old machine to the new one. Here is the deal, I imported the .pst file on the new machine but when I try to import the rules, every single one of them brakes. The folders and sub-folders hierarchy is preserved upon the import of the .pst but the rules don't point to the right folder in the respective rule. Instead it points to "the specified folder". Same OS (Windows XP), same mail client (Outlook 2007) and the .psf file is about 8 GB. Any help i greatly appreciated.

  I have a Server 2008 machine called OTTO I recently, by mistake, booted up an old machine, also called OTTO (the hardware was unstable, so the new one was set up to take it's place) I shut down the old machine, turned it off, and recycled it (it won't ever be back on) Now, whenever i try to log in to the real OTTO with the domain account (mydomain\Administrator) i get the following error: The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation What can I do to fix this? It doesn't appear in active directory any more I've added it, but I'm guessing this had no effect, due to a different SID I can log in as the local administrator however

• Synergy client drops and reconnects at UAC dialog

  I've been using Synergy for a while at work to connect my XP machine (the host) to my Win 7 laptop (the client). I previously was having issues with using Synergy and the UAC prompt, as described in this question, and have had no issues since, until recently. I upgraded to Synergy 1.4.10 and now am seeing odd behavior whenever a UAC prompt appears on my laptop. When the UAC prompt appears on my laptop, Synergy momentarily drops its connection to my laptop, causing my mouse and keyboard focus to revert to my host machine (the XP machine). After about a second or so, though, the connection gets re-established and I am able to type and use the mouse buttons in the UAC prompt. Once the prompt clears, the connection drops again for a second, and then gets re-established again. Is this something to do with configuration or perhaps should I just chalk it up to a change in behavior in version 1.4.10?
