• New CentOS/cPanel servers showing high load averages at idle

  I have taken delivery of two identically specced CentOS/cPanel servers, showing the same behaviour of a resting load average of 1.30, 1.21, 1.16 and yet the CPU is sitting 100% idle. A kernel/driver conflict perhaps? I don't see any processes in R or D state that might inflate the load averages artificially, I realise it may be considered low in an 8 thread system but its higher at idle than any normal behaviour I've previously come across. • 403 Error when accessing vhost directive

  I'm having some troubles with setting up my webserver (Centos 5.8). It's a brand new server and I'm trying to set a vhost to the following dir: /home/exo/public_html However whenever I restart httpd I get the following warning: Code: Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/home/exo/public_html] does not exist Yes the directory does exist. So whenever I visit the domain exo-l.com it gives me a 403 error. This is my config file (I put this inside my httpd.conf because the files in conf.d were not included for some reason. • VMWare - Windows XP guest licensing

  Hi, If I have a VMWare ESXi server with 4 Windows XP guests running on it, I understand that I need a separate license for each guest. Is there a way to simplify license compliance on these VMs? For example, I want to create a master VM image and boot it 4 times. By default those 4 VMs will have the same Windows activation key installed. Is there a simple solution for this?   I've got sendmail running on a linux box. Let's say the hostname of the box is bar.com. If I run the following command, I don't receive the email (which is hosted with a third party), presumably due to the hostname pointing to the local machine. echo "Test Body" | mail -s "Test Subject" [email protected] Is there any way to get this to work so that I can receive emails at my third party email address even though it has the same hostname? Do I have to change the hostname of this server (not preferred)? It may be worth noting that I created a user "foo" on my machine and noticed that the mailbox for that account is empty. • Linux NFS create mask and force user equivalent

  I have two Linux servers: fileserver Debian 5.0.3 (2.6.26-2-686) Samba version 3.4.2 apache Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (2.6.32-23-generic) Apache 2.2.14 I have a number of Samba shares on fileserver so that I can access files from Windows PCs. I am also exporting /data/www-data to the apache server, where I have it mounted as /var/www. The setup is okay, except for when I come to create files on the NFS mount. I end up with files that cannot be read by Apache, or which cannot be modified by other users on my system. With Samba, I can specify force user, force group, create mask and directory mask, and this ensures that all files are created with suitable permissions for my Apache web server. I can't find a way to do this with NFS. Is there a way to force permissions and ownership with NFS - am I missing something obvious? Although I've spent quite a bit of time with Linux, and am weaning myself off Windows, I still haven't quite got to grip with Linux permissions... If this is not the right way to do things, I am open to alternative suggestions.

  I've bought a new computer and like always it comes with windows 7 pre-installed. I'm a linux user by default but i still keep a virtual windows installation around. Is it possible to install my linux distribution, and use the OEM license that came with the computer to create the virtual instance? I have no intention of moving the license off the physical machine so i'm sure i could argue that i'm not violating the license but i don't expect that this would work and activate without great legal battles. So in the event that this doesn't work what other options do i have? Can i shrink the physical partition and have Qemu boot it? My thoughts are that windows would detect the change in hardware and fail. What can i do with this windows install as a linux user?

• How Would I Restrict a Linux Binary to a Limited Amount of RAM?

  I would like to be able to limit an installed binary to only be able to use up to a certain amount of RAM. I don't want it to get killed if it exceeds it, only that that would be the max amount that it could use. The problem I am facing is that I am running an Apache 2.2 server with PHP and some custom code that a developer is writing for us. The problem is that somewhere in there code they launch a PHP exec call that launches ImageMagick's 'convert' to create a resized image file. I'm not privy to a lot of details to the project or the code, but need to find a solution to keep them from killing the server until they can find a way to optimize the code. I had thought that I could do this with /etc/security/limits.conf and setting a limit on the apache user, but it seems to have no effect. This is what I used: www-data hard as 500 If I understand it correctly, this should have limited any apache user process to a maximum to 500kb, however, when I ran a test script that would chew up a lot of RAM, this actually got up to 1.5GB before I killed it. • SSD Performance for PHP?

  My programmer just built an application with PHP using Doctrine ORM (will be a high traffic social networking website), and it's very heavy in PHP/Apache and CPU. The queries are wonderfully fast, and MySQL is barely using any CPU, it's just Apache. I was curious to if an SSD would help speed up PHP/Apache, because I know the bottleneck is in PHP reading multiple files, class files, and loading up a bunch of data. So common sense makes me think if PHP is reading multiple PHP files, an SSD would only help as far as read/write? I was thinking of doing a high performance SSD for the PHP application, but for user image uploads, I would just continue using a 15k SAS. Is there any performance issues regarding using an SSD in this kind of situation? And would it prove to help speed up PHP/Apache, and help the CPU problem out?

  I set the following ACL on my web directory: setfacl -R -d -m mask:002 /var/www and then created a file as root that I expected to be readable by the default (apache) group. -rw--w-r--+ 1 root apache 0 Dec 17 22:32 newfile.py When I run getfacl on the file, I get: # file: newfile.py # owner: root # group: apache user::rw- group::rwx #effective:-w- mask::-w- other::r-- I'm not sure how to read this- but all I know is that the webserver is throwing a permissions error because apache can't read the file. Can anyone explain what is going on here?

  I have a web server and I'm uploading files using an FTP client. Because of that the owner and the group of the file are taken from the user used during the upload. Now I have to make this file writable by the web server (apache/apache). One way would be to just change the owner and the group of the uploaded file to apache/apache, but that way I cannot modify the file using the FTP account. Another way would be to give the file 777 permissions. Both approaches seem not very professional and a little bit risky. Are there any other options? In Windows I can just add another user to the file. Can something similar done with Linux?

• Redirecting HTTP traffic from a local server on the web

  Here is the situation: I have a webserver (let's call it C1) that is running an apache/php server and it is port forwarded so that I can access it anywhere. However there is another computer within the webserver LAN that has a apache server too (let's call it C2). I cannot change the port forwarding nor I can change the apache server (a.k.a. install custom modules). My question is: is there a way to access C2 within a directory of C1? (e.g. going to www.website.org/random_dir will allow me to browse the root of C2 apache server.) I am trying to change as little as possible of the config/other (e.g. activating modules etc.) Is there a possible solution? Thanks in advance.

  I am newbie struggling to move a file on a Linux VPS using PuTTY. I can log in with a user in PuTTY at this point I can navigate to see the file I wish to move (~/servers/apache-solr-3.6.2/example/webapps/solr.war). By using cd .. a couple of times from the directory I begin at when I first log in to PuTTY I can then navigate to the location I wish to move the file to: usr/local/jakarta/apache-tomcat-5.5.36/webapps/ I know that I need to use cp to copy the file and have tried variations on: cp ~/servers/apache-solr-3.6.2/example/webapps/solr.war usr/local/jakarta/apache-tomcat-5.5.36/webapps However each time I get 'No such file or directory' I have tried excluding the ~/ and the start and I have tried specifying solr.war at the end of the command. Please excuse the newbie question, but I would really appreciate some advice on what I am doing wrong here.

  I know this problem is plastered all over the web but I've been searching and trying for hours with no luck. Can someone please give me some help? I originally installed Apache 2.0.64 along with PHP 5.2.17, I went through all of the steps in this tutorial with no luck, I found that the culprit was the LoadModule line. After looking on the internet I found a whole bunch of stuff but a lot of it was referring to PHP 5 and Apache 2.2. Since there seemed to be more info on apache 2.2 I removed apache 2.0.64 and installed 2.2. I added the code to LoadModule in the conf file but I got the same problem. I then followed the steps in this tutorial because it was slightly different with some things I hadn't tried yet but still I get the same problem. If I comment out LoadModule... it works fine but otherwise I get "The requested operation has failed!". This is what I ended up keeping since it works only having to comment one line. LoadModule php5_module "c:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" <IfModule mod_php5.c> AddType application/x-httpd-php .php PHPIniDir "c:/php" DirectoryIndex index.php </IfModule> EDIT: How can I stop getting this error message? UPDATE: Also, please note that I took note of the message in the PHP site that stated if PHP 5.2 was to be run with Apache to use the VC6 and not VC9. I had VC9 so I replaced it with VC6, the file is labeled php-5.2.17-nts-Win32-VC6-x86.zip

But I do not want to have a Apache infront of the cluster. So how do my client access the cluster??
