• In what order do people build websites?

  For a website, you need to have an idea, you need to have a design and you need to have data, events and output, right? Whether it be a blog, web app, Q&A site, search engine... Anyway, that is only slightly related to my question. My question is, when designing a website, providing I know the purpose, what should I start with? Should I start with the CSS, design and look&feel using dummy data first, or should I program in the logic, events and output, and style it later? What is the design process of most websites that are built from the ground up?

• Java EE@Java Day Taipei 2014

  Java Day Taipei 2014 was held at the Taipei International Convention Center on August 1st. Organized by Oracle University, it is one of the largest Java developer events in Taiwan. This was another successful year for Java Day Taipei with a fully sold out venue. In addition to Oracle speakers like me, Steve Chin and Naveen Asrani, the event also featured a bevy of local speakers including Taipei Java community leaders. Topics included Java SE, Java EE, JavaFX and Big Data. I delivered a keynote on Java EE 7/Java EE 8 as well as a talks on aligning the JavaScript ecosystem with Java EE 7 and using NoSQL solutions in Java EE applications.   My blog has been quiet for quite a while. My inspiration comes from crunching/exchanging information which I should do more often. Gartner analysis tells us that by 2013 mobile phones will overtake PC’s as the most common Web access device worldwide. A few years back I would have said non sense, but apparently most Web users are comfortable with less processing power. Just take a look at the increasing business in Netbooks. Wouldn’t it be great to have a mobile phone which can connect wirelessly to my home TV, monitor, car display, mouse, keyboard, etc? And to have the processing power of the current Netbook generation? Where can I buy it? Why are we making our PC devices (for instance the slate) smaller while we can make our mobile device’s functionality bigger? What about the single responsibility principle? Does it apply to physical devices as well as good object-oriented software?

  The NetBeans HTML5 editor is pretty amazing, working on an extensive screencast on that right now, to be published soon. One thing missing is HTML Tidy integration, until now: As you can see, in this particular file, HTML Tidy finds 6 times more problems (OK, some of them maybe false negatives) than the standard NetBeans HTML hint infrastructure does. You can also run the scanner across the whole project or all projects. Only HTML files will be scanned by HTML Tidy (via JTidy) and you can click on items in the window above to jump to the line. Future enhancements will include error annotations and hint integration, some of which has already been addressed in this blog over the years.   Last week, I had the opportunity to talk about Java EE 7 in Nancy (Lorrraine - France) and Kiev (Ukraine). The first event was arranged by the local Lorraine JUG while the second one was a largest conference organised by the Ukraine Java User Group. Based on the overall feedback and discussions I had during those two events, it is clear that the WebSocket API (JSR 356) is really a hot topic.   I've worked with SharePoint for some time now, and I like to think that I know all there is to know about it.  Deep down I know that's not true, but it's a fun delusion.  However, I found out yesterday that there is a mechanism in SharePoint called the Scenario Framework that has been around for a while but that I had no idea ever existed.  It is used to maintain state between multi-page web forms and helps manage the navigation between those pages.  If building out multiple-page forms in SharePoint is in your plans, you can find more information about the Scenario Framework on Waldek Mastykarz blog entry on the subject.

Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered. So we thought it would be a good idea to create a series of small posts that deal with these "How do I" question directly. We will use a simple example each time, that shows exactly what commands and procedures should be used to address a given problem. • How to interpret Google's "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

• Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum?

  Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. This discussion resulted in a blog post and video http://elsewhat.com/2010/05/20/lazy-developers-hate-agile-and%C2%A0scrum/ I've gotten three comments which I've tried to answer in a neutral way, but they comments do point out that there are some people who loathe scrum (and I am always 100% certain they are not lazy developers). • Can't boot to Ubuntu 11.10 after installation with Windows 7

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a machine with Windows 7 already installed. I want to setup the dualboot environment. I have a block of unallocated disk space at the end of the disk (some blog post suggested to do so). Then I started installing Ubuntu 11.10 on that part of disk. I installed the boot loader to /boot partition and the installation finished successfully. However, after installation, Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't show up on boot menu. Then I searched on Internet and I used EasyBCD to add a grub2 boot to boot menu. After this, the boot entry does show up in the boot menu, however it only boot into some sort of grub console. I tried many times, and it doesn't work. It looks like the boot loader is not properly installed? I only have one 1.5TB disk and the first 800GB is NTFS partition with Windows 7. Does this work?
