• Sun OS 5.10 not honoring .hushlogin

  I scp and ssh a zillion times a day, and because of our corporate policy I can't get rid of /etc/issue or /etc/motd on the destination machines. So whereas I just want to see the results of my scp or ssh, all I ever end up seeing is thousands of copies of the motd. .hushlogin doesn't seem to be honored. Any other ideas on how to get rid of the message display? Is there some sshd config setting I don't know about (though I probably couldn't change that either)? Is there some curiously sunos/solaris specific way to achieve the goal?

• APF, IPTABLES, Fedora 15 - Not blocking correctly

  I just got a new remote server which came with Fedora 15. I first tried to run APF but it gave me this error "apf(18031): {glob} unable to load iptables module (ip_tables), aborting.". Which I then set SET_MONOKERN="0" to SET_MONOKERN="1" to resolve the problem. However, with my config file showing BLK_P2P_PORTS="1214,2323,4660_4678,6257,6699,6346,6347,6881_6889,6346,7778" The ports show up as closed, instead of being filtered. • Restart single uWSGI application (when it's in emperor mode)

  I'm running uWSGI in emperor mode to host a bunch of Django sites based on their individual configs. These are supposed to update when it detects a change in the config file and this largely works when I just touch uwsgi.ini the relevant file. But occasionally I'll mess something up in the Django site and the server won't load. Yeah, yeah, I should be testing better but that's not really the point. When this happens, uWSGI seems to mark the site as dead and stops trying to run it (seems to make sense). Even after I fix the underlying issue, no amount of touching will get that site's uWSGI process up and running. I have to reload the whole uWSGI server (knocking dozens of sites out at once for a few seconds). Is there a way to force uWSGI to just reload one of its sites?

• Creating ip alias on bonded interface ie. bond0:1

  System: HP Proliant DL360 G5 running CentOS 5.4 Bonded interface is working fine for a long time. I just went to add an alias the way I always have on a regular interface, and on first check it works (pinging on the local box) but it is not accessable from outside (iptables is turned off). In addition with this setup the normal network response started to decline, hanging for around a minute before I could get a prompt on login.   Mailing lists and question/answers works great for problems that are independently encountered by several people. But sometimes we (as in experienced amateurs) run into problems that aren't so common, nobody has blogged about it and experts advice not readily available. For IT-admin related stuff can someone please recommend how can amateurs pay experts and get hands on advice. The kinds of problems I am talking about are like setting up nxserver or openvpn on freeBSD box. The install/config is not so simple, the documentation not easy for non-it professionals. • Failover of mirrored webservice

  We are using a webservice (over http) which has 2 mirrored servers, accessible as, say www.blah.com and www2.blah.com. Is there a software solution that would help us handle failover? Currently if one server becomes unavailable, I need to manually edit our config to point at the other server. Failover on their side is "in the works", so I don't want to do checking for server availability in code. On our side, we use a mix of linux and windows boxes, so we have both os's in the cage.

• Can't use HTTPS with ServerXMLHTTP object

  I am supporting a Classic ASP application that connects to a payment gateway via HTTPS. Up until recently there have been no issues. A few days ago this broke without the code, IIS config or anything local changing. Its broken on at least 3 separate servers. The last run of Windows Updates was in late November, but bringing the servers' updates up date has not resolved the problem. A code snippet is below. • Cannot connect to HTTPS port on Ubuntu

  I've installed a new SSL certificate and set up Nginx to use it. But requests time out when trying to hit HTTPS on the site. When I telnet to my domain on port 80 it connects, but times out on port 443. I'm not sure if there's some defaults on Ubuntu preventing a connection. • Unloading uwsgi dynamic app

  I have a uWSGI setup where I run dynamic mode and add applications to it. All applications are working off the same codebase, but each have their own settings file. Its working beautifully. Say for instance, i want to change a setting for one app that has already been loaded. Is there a way I can get uwsgi to reload the app, rather than restarting the whole uwsgi server? In emperor mode I could just touch the config file. How do I achieve the equivalent result in dynamic mode?

  I am looking for a way to make iptables only accept requests for my domain name and reject the others. • SQL Server Reporting authentication not working

  I'm not exactly sure what went wrong but our SQL Server Reporting Services authentication is no longer working correctly. When I try to load the site, it asks for a username and password, and mine doesn't work. I checked the service and it is using the NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService to logon. Since it is using NetworkService to logon, I read on Microsoft's site that I need to use these settings in the RSReportServer.config file: <AuthenticationTypes> <RSWindowsNegotiate /> </AuthenticationTypes> <EnableAuthPersistence>true</EnableAuthPersistence> Which is what I have set. It still asks for the password. When I set the Authentication to RSWindowsNTLM, it does login but everytime I click on a link, it asks for a password (the password doesn't seem to prevent anything from loading). Anyone know what is going on here? I'm not an expert to SQL Server so I may be missing something.

The website takes 80 and 443 traffic. I want to use IIRF to redirect all port 80 traffic EG; http://myserver/app1/page1/param1 http://myserver/app2/ http://myserver To the secure equivalent (https). • phpmyadmin error #2002 cannot connect to mysql server

  so i am getting this error when trying to connect to my mysql server. i have reinstalled MYSQL and php several times and tried a slew of command line work from info around the web.mysql is running and i know that my mysql.sock exists and is located in ~/private/tmp/ and also in ~/tmp/. i also have plenty of hard drive space. i have installed and setup phpmyadmin correctly only adding a password to 'Password for config auth'. AND i have connected to the server via Sequel Pro. so my question is what the heck is going on that i can't connect to the server via phpmyadmin? any guesses? also i'm on a 64-bit intel mac running snow leopard

  my computer can catch the signal for many Access Points for the same network, while the network has problem with internet connection in some APs and it's working in others "all APs have the same SSID" Please advice if as i user i can force my computer to connect with specific AP neither than to go with the one with higher power (through MAC adress or IP)?. • AWS VPC - why have a private subnet at all?

  In Amazon VPC, the VPC creation wizard allows one to create a single "public subnet" or have the wizard create a "public subnet" and a "private subnet". Initially, the public and private subnet option seemed good for security reasons, allowing webservers to be put in the public subnet and database servers to go in the private subnet. But I've since learned that EC2 instances in the public subnet are not reachable from the Internet unless you associate an Amazon ElasticIP with the EC2 instance. So it seems with just a single public subnet configuration, one could just opt to not associate an ElasticIP with the database servers and end up with the same sort of security. Can anyone explain the advantages of a public + private subnet configuration? Are the advantages of this config more to do with auto-scaling, or is it actually less secure to have a single public subnet?

• Sagem Router Wifi Key Issue

  Hi I have a multiservices sagem router which supports wifi as well, the pack came up with a default wifi configuration key and a WEP Key in the label of the package like this: WIFI Configuration key: abcd1234 WEP Key: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now, when i execute the wifi usb wizard in the official cd, it asks me for the WIFI key, i put the abcd1234 & it says it's incorrect, i try the long WEP key and it says that the key should only have 8 characters. When i go to the control panel of the router in the wifi config, i see that: Open Authentification System WEP 128 Bit Passphrase: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now since the wizard only accepts 8 characters, i try to change the 128bit to 64bit and put some 8 characters and it ends up saying that the new key should be 5 or 13, or 10-26 hex numbers. • Authentication in Apache2 with mod_dav_svn

  I'm having some trouble setting up authentication in Apache2 for a SVN repository that's being served using mod_dav_svn. Here is my Apache config for the directory: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn/repos AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dev.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I can use svn with the projects under /var/svn/repos, so I know that the DAV is working, but when I do svn updates or commits (or anything), Apache doesn't ask for any authentication... It does the exact same thing whether the Auth directives are there or not. The permissions on the repository directory (and all subdirectories/files) only give permission to www-data (the Apache2 user/group). I have also ensured that all relevant modules are enabled (in particular mod_auth is enabled, as are all mod_dav* modules). Any ideas why svn commands aren't authenticating? Thanks in advance.

• Do best-practices say to restrict the usage of /var to sudoers?

  I wrote a package, and would like to use /var to persist some data. The data I'm storing would perhaps even be thought of as an addition for /var/db. The pattern I observe is that files in /var/db, and the surrounds, are owned by root. The primary (intended) use of the package filters cron jobs - meaning you would need permissions to edit the crontab. Should I presume a sudo install of the package? Should I have the package gracefully degrade to a /usr subdir, and if so then which one? If I 'opinionate' that any non-sudo install requires a configrc (with paths), where should the package look (presuming a shared-host environment) for that config file? Incidentally, this package is a ruby gem, and you can find it here.
