• Javascript/PHP and timezones

  Hi, I'd like to be able to guess the user's timezone offset and whether or not daylight savings is being applied. Currently, the most definitive code that I've found for this is here: http://www.michaelapproved.com/articles/daylight-saving-time-dst-detect/ So this gives me the offset along with the DST indicator. Now, I want to use these in my PHP scripts in order to ouput the local date/time for the user....but what's best for this? I figure I have 2 options: a) Pick a random timezone which has the same offset and DST setting from the output of timezone_abbreviations_list(). Then call date_timezone_set() with this in order to apply the correct treatment to the time. b) Continue treating the date as UTC but just do some timestamp addition to add the appropriate number of hours on. My feeling is that option B is the best way. The reason for this is that with A, I could be using a timezone which although correct in terms of offset/dst, may have some obscur rules in place behind the scene that could give surprising results (I don't know of any but nonetheless I don't think I can rule it out). I'd then re-check the timezone using Javascript at the start of each session in order to capture when either the user's timezone changes (very unlikely) or they pass in to the DST period. Sorry for the brain dump - I'm really just after some sort of reassurance that the approaches above are valid. Thanks, James.

• Find actual value of PHP variable

  Hi all. I am having a real headache with reading in a tab delimited text file and inserting it into a MySQL Database. The tab delimited text file was generated (I think) from a MS SQL Database, and I have written a simple script to read in the file and insert it into an existing table in my MySQL database. However, there seems to be some problem with the data in the txt file. When my PHP script parses the file and I output the INSERT statements, the values in each of the fields are longer than they should be. For example, the first field should be a simple two character alphanumeric value. If I echo out the INSERT statements, using Firebug (in Firefox), between each of the characters is a question mark in a black diamond. If I var_dump the values, I get the following: string(5) "A1" Now, this clearly shows a two character string, but var_dump tells me it is five characters long!! If I trim() the value, all I get is the first character (in this case "A"). How can I get at the other characters, even if it is only to remove them? Additionally, this appears to be forcing MySQL to insert the value as a BLOB, not as a varchar as it should. Simon

  How would one typically create a dynamic factory method in PHP? By dynamic factory method, I mean a factory method that will autodiscover what objects there are to create, based on some aspect of the given argument. Preferably without registering them first with the factory either. I'm OK with having the possible objects be placed in one common place (a directory) though. • PHP Error handling in WordPress plugin

  I am a newbie to both PHP and Wordpress (but do ok in C#), and am struggling to understand the error handling in a custom plugin I am attempting to write. The basics of the plugin is to query an exsiting MSSQL database (note its not the standard MYSQL db...) and return the rows back to the screen. This was working well, but the hosting provider has taken my database offline, which led me to the error handling problem (which I thought was ok). The following code is failing to connect to the database (as expected), but puts an error onto the screen and stops the page processing. It does not even output the 'or die' error text.   I have a simple function on a php page that takes a url such as: http://myurl.com/mypage.html?param1=value1 and converts it to: http://myurl.com/searchpage.html?param1=value1 All it does it swap out the page.html portion. To do this, I use the following: $currentUrl = $this-getCurrentUrl(); // Grabs the current url, i.e 'http://myurl.com/mypage.html?param1=value1' // Derive a search pattern from the current url $pattern = "/" . str_replace(array("/", ".", "-"), array("\\/", "\\.", "\\-"), $currentUrl) . "/"; // get rid of the 'mypage.html' $newUrl = preg_replace($pattern, 'http://myurl.com/', $currentUrl); // replace the question mark with the correct page $newUrl = str_replace("/?", "/searchpage.html?", $newUrl); The above code is not the exact code but is a good representation. It works beautifully on one server, but when I push to production, the preg_replace does not work. I originally attempted to use str_replace. It also works on my local development machine, but not on the production server. I have confirmed that the URL variables are coming in correctly. Any ideas?

• Handling Errors in PHP

  I have a custom class that, when called, will redirect to a page and send a 'message_type' and 'message' variable via GET. When the page opens it checks for these variables and displays a 'success', 'warning', or 'error' message depending on the 'message_type' variable. I made it so the user thinks they stay on the same page. It also allows for other variables to be passed along with the message. Is this good practice, or should I just start using exceptions? Example: //Call a static function that will redirect to a page, with an error message RedirectWithMessage::go('somepage.php', MessageType::ERROR, 'Error message here.'); The following checkMessage() function is an include file: function checkMessage() { if((isset($_GET['message_type']) && strlen($_GET['message_type'])) && (isset($_GET['message']) && strlen($_GET['message_type']))) { DisplayMessage::display($_GET['message_type'], $_GET['message']); return true; } return false; } On the page that is redirected to, call checkMessage(); //If a message is received, display it. If not, do nothing checkMessage(); I know this might be vague, and I can supply more code if necessary. I guess the issue is that I don't have much experience using exceptions, but I think they seem cumbersome (writing try-catch blocks everywhere).   Hi! If I have understood Axis2 correct i can construct a WebService and then access it with any SOAP compatible client. I have a java class with a couple of methods that I have written in Eclipse, and then automatically constructed a service with the Axis2 plugin from WTP. This is the methods of my class. public int test(int i){ return i+2; } public Car CarTest(int speed){ return new Car("Biltest", speed); } public CarFactoryAdapter getCarFactory(){ carFact.getCars().add(new Car("Bmw", 250)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("seat", 350)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("saab", 150)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("volv", 50)); return new CarFactoryAdapter(carFact); } The code seems to work when I try it with soapUI and the Axis2-web interface has recognized the methods of my service. But when Iam trying the methods that receives parameters with PHP´s built in soapClient i get a Unknown exception. The getCarFactory methods works at least as expected, but it seems kind of crippled if I can´t send parameters. • PHP CodeIgniter Framework - Thoughts on developing with it?

  I've been reviewing different frameworks to use for my next couple of major web applications, and after days of research am almost set on using CodeIgniter. The reason I'm leaning towards CI is that so far it looks to be the best suited for me. It doesn't require constant command-line access (I am currently using shared hosting; the projects do not warrant a dedicate server yet), nothing special has to be installed on the server running it (you just upload the framework to the root of whatever your developing), and they appear to have some excellent documentation, videos, and tutorials on how to get started. Do any of you have experience with CodeIgniter? If so, what is your opinion of it and its features? What had you developed with it, and what types of applications is it best suited to create? I certainly don't want to get into a situation where I'm trying to bend a framework to do something that it isn't well-suited for. Both of my projects will be database-driven apps that will require user registration, the ability to manipulate data that is specific to their account (their posts, listings, user account details, etc), amongst other things. Also, if you have any other PHP framework suggestions, I am open to them. Thanks in advance for your help! -Sootah

  I have a simple problem but no matter what I try I can't see to get it to work. I have a form on a php page and I need to validate the qty value on my form so that it doesn't exceed $qty (value pulled from mySQL) and is not less than zero. Sounds easy--hmm wish it were..lol!   Hi, I am trying to do this regex match and replace but not able to do it. Example <SPAN class="one">first content here</SPAN> <SPAN class="two">second content here </SPAN> <SPAN class="three">one; two; three; and more.</span> <SPAN class="four">more content here.</span> I want to find each set of the span tags and replace with something like this Find <SPAN class="one">first content here</SPAN> Change to <one>first content here</one> same way the the rest of the span tags. class="one", class="two" and so on are the only key identifier which I use in the regex match expression. So if I find a span tag with these class then I want to do the replace. My main issue is that I am not able to find the occurrence of first closing tag so what it does is it finds from the start to end which is of no use. So far I have been trying to do this using notepad++ but just found that it has its limitations so any php help would be appreciated. regards

  I am very new to php/mysql and this is causing me to loose hairs, I am trying to build a multi level site navigation. But the second part does not work and I can't understand why. I am trying to match a category with a parent that is stored in it's own table, but it returns nothing even though the categories all have parents. Can anyone tell me why this is? p.s. The $categories variable contains the sub category id.

  I have a MySQL file which I want to import via PHP 5. In the name of user friendliness the user should not use tools like PHPmyadmin etc. Just hit a button and the file will get imported. I have already created code to upload the file to a location on the server. • PHP - "Fat Free Framework" Find Methods and Showing Results in Template

  Just started trying the "Fat Free Framework" I'm building a site using a MySQL DB with 265 fields, and 5000+ rows in the DB; I can load() a specific record easily, no problems. When using find(), afind(), and even "select()", template will show blank lines or lines with "filler" text, with the correct number of rows for the query results, but no text/data from the DB itself; Same problem whether using objects or simply arrays from result (afind() and find()). I've copied/pasted the code verbatim from examples and from documentation, with only the DB specific items changed. Still, no luck. • Convert a nested array into a flat array with PHP

  Hello all, I'm trying to create a generic database mapping class with PHP. Collecting the data through my functions is going well, but as expected I'm retrieving a nested set. A print_r of my received array looks like: Array ( [table] => Session [columns] => Array ( [0] => `Session`.`ID` AS `Session_ID` [1] => `Session`.`User` AS `Session_User` [2] => `Session`.`SessionID` AS `Session_SessionID` [3] => `Session`.`ExpiresAt` AS `Session_ExpiresAt` [4] => `Session`.`CreatedAt` AS `Session_CreatedAt` [5] => `Session`.`LastActivity` AS `Session_LastActivity` [6] => `Session`.`ClientIP` AS `Session_ClientIP` ) [0] => Array ( [table] => User [columns] => Array ( [0] => `User`.`ID` AS `User_ID` [1] => `User`.`UserName` AS `User_UserName` [2] => `User`.`Password` AS `User_Password` [3] => `User`.`FullName` AS `User_FullName` [4] => `User`.`Address` AS `User_Address` ) [0] => Array ( [table] => Address [columns] => Array ( [0] => `Address`.`ID` AS `Address_ID` [1] => `Address`.`UserID` AS `Address_UserID` [2] => `Address`.`Street` AS `Address_Street` [3] => `Address`.`City` AS `Address_City` ) ) ) ) To simplify things I want to recreate this nested array to a flat array so I can easily loop through it and use the 'columns' key to create my SELECT query. • Netbeans (PHP) catching syntax error on xml declaration

  Hello. I've just installed and configured Netbeans to work with PHP (including xdebug), and almost everything is working as intended, except that I've been getting "errors" in the IDE after I edited the default webpage template to comply with xhtml 1.1. The template is this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="${project.encoding}" ?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=${project.encoding}" /> <title></title> </head> <body> </body> </html> These are the errors I receive (I can't post images yet). Page is created OK, character encoding is inherited from project's settings as expected. It's probably something to do with the xml declaration on top of the document, but I don't really know how to "tune" Netbeans to ignore it and not show the 3 errors on every page I create. The warning is there because NB does not recognize the xhtml 1.1 DTD, so it falls back to html 4.01, which does not support the xmlns attribute in the html tag - and that's the only thing I could find searching around. It will be fixed in the next version, so I'm not worried about it. I know there's nothing wrong with the markup, but there's probably something I'm missing in NB configuration, and I would like to get rid of those messages because they pretty much take all the space I reserve for errors/warnings/tasks. So is there any way I can either make NB recognize this xml declaration or make it ignore these specific "errors"? Thanks.
