• Check If Stored Procedure Returns Value

  Hello all, I am using Linq 2 Sql in VS 2010, and I have the following stored procedure to check a username and password ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.CheckUser ( @username varchar(50), @password varchar(50) ) AS SELECT * FROM Users Where UserName=@username AND Password=@password The problem I'm having is that it throws an exception if the username and password are incorrect. I'd like to perform a check to see if there is a return value, rather than using try/catch to determine whether the procedure returned a value. Should I do this check in code (C#)? Or is there a way to do it in SQL? Thanks.

  I have a jQuery that when you click on a select option it will show the next one, but you have to click, you cant just use the down arrow or "tab" to the next option. • How to Install Oracle Software on Remote Linux Server

  It is becoming more common these days to install Oracle software on remote Linux servers. This issue has always existed but was generally resolved either by silent installs or by someone physically going to the server to install the software. This is becoming more difficult with the popular virtualisation and cloud deployment strategies. This post provides the steps involved to install Oracle Software using the GUI interface on a remote Linux server. There are many ways to achieve this, the way I resolve this issue is via Virtual Network Computing (VNC) as it is shipped with RedHat and OEL out of the box. For this post I’m using OEL 5 deployed on a OVM guest. If not already done so download and install a client version of VNC so you can connect to the server. There are many out there, for the purpose of this post I use UltraVNC. You can download a free version from http://www.uvnc.com/download/index.html By default VNC Server is installed in your RedHat and OEL OS, but it is not configured. The way VNC works is when started it creates a client instance for the user and binds it to a specific port. So if have an account on the Linux box you can setup a VNC Server session for that user, you don’t need to be root. For the purpose of this document I’m going to use oracle as the user to setup a VNC Session as this is the user I want use to install the software. However to start the VNC Service you must be root. As the root user run the following command: service vncserver start Starting VNC server: no displays configured                [  OK  ] Login to the Linux box as the user  you wan to install the Oracle software [oracle@lisa ~]$ Run the command to create a new VNC server instance for the oracle user: vncserver You will be ask to supply password information. This is what you will enter when connecting from your desktop client. This password is also independent of the actual Linux user password. The VNC Server is acting as a proxy to this instance. You will require a password to access your desktops. Password: Verify: xauth:  creating new authority file /home/oracle/.Xauthority New 'lisa.nz.oracle.com:1 (oracle)' desktop is lisa.nz.oracle.com:1 Creating default startup script /home/oracle/.vnc/xstartup Starting applications specified in /home/oracle/.vnc/xstartup Log file is /home/oracle/.vnc/lisa.nz.oracle.com:1.log As you can see a new instance lisa.nz.oracle.com:1 has been created. If you were to run the vncserver command again another instance lisa.nz.oracle.com:2 will be created. If you are going through a firewall you will need to ensure that the port 5901 (port 1) is open between your client desktop and the Linux Server. Depending on the options chosen at install time a firewall could be in place. The simplest way to disable this is using the command. You will need to be root. service iptables stop This will stop the firewall while you install. If you just want to add a port to the accepted lists use the firewall UI. You will need to be root. system-config-security-level Now you are ready to connect to the server via the VNC. Using the software installed in step one start the VNC Client. You should be prompted for the server and port. If connectivity is established, you will be prompted for the password entered in step 5. You should now be presented with a terminal screen ready to install software Go to the location of the oracle install software and start the Oracle Universal Installer

  A quick tip for all you new enthusiastic users of the amazing new Azure. I struggled for a few minutes finding this, so I thought I’d share. The Azure dashboard doesn’t seem to give easy access to your FTP credentials, and they are not the login and password you use everywhere else. This is what you need to use in Filezilla or whatever you use to access your site remotely. Notice how the password looks encrypted. Well, it’s not really encrypted in fact. This is your password in clear text. It’s just crypto-random gibberish, which is the best kind of password. UPDATE: About 2 minutes after I posted that, David Ebbo mentioned to me on Twitter that if you've configured publishing credentials (for Git typically) those will work too. Don't forget to include the full user name though, which should be of the form nameofthesite\username. The password is the one you defined. That’s it. Enjoy.

• "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • Sending mails via Mutt and Gmail: Duplicates

  I'm trying to setup mutt wiht gmail for the first time. It seems to work pretty well, however when I send a mail from Mutt i appears twice in Gmail's sent folder. • How to Store State in Silverlight WCF RIA Services

  Hi All, I am developing a silverlight 3 application using WCF RIA services. I am using the AuthenticationBase class to handle my authentication. As I understand it under the hood this uses the ASP .NET authentication libraries. When I log into the site the authentication service handles login state so that if I close the site and open it straight away I am still logged in according to the server. When the webpage is refreshed or closed and reloaded I can call the method, WebContextBase.Current.Authentication.LoadUser() And it goes back to the authentication service (running on the server) and figures out whether I am still logged into the site. If a timeout has occured the answer will be no. If that is the case I can show a login dialog. The problem I want to solve is that the authentication service consumes the password, and there is no way I can ever retrieve that password again. If the user logs into the site I want to store the password on the server, and return a token to the client side to match up with that password. I have some other services on the server side that need that password. So where should I store that password on the server? How can that be done? How does the WCF authentication store state?

  The login page on a project i'm currently fixing up shows blank. i tried echoing some words to find out where the fault lied.   Hello! I'm investigating Zend Framework and currently stucked in counting resulting rows of sql query... Every method I try (from documentation and some blogposts and tutorials) returns an error (like Call to undefined function) or simply gives the incorrect value. I've tried this: $checkquery = $db->select() ->from('users', 'COUNT(*)') ->where('login = ?', $login) ->where('password = ?', $password) ->query(); $checkrequest=fetchRow($checkquery)->num; ...then this one: $checkquery = $db->select() ->from('users', '*') ->where('login = ?', $login) ->where('password = ?', $password) ->query(); $checkrequest=count($checkquery->fetchAll()); and even: $checkquery = $db->select() ->from('users', '*') ->where('login = ?', $login) ->where('password = ?', $password) ->query(); $checkrequest=$checkquery->fetchAll()->num; Also rowCount() and count(fetchRow()) and count(fetchAll()->toArray()). But always I got an error message or duplicate inserts in db in further insert function. So what is the correct way to do the resulting row calculation in select clause in Zend Framework 1.9 (I use this one) ?

• Double hashing passwords - client & server

  Hey, first, let me say, I'm not asking about things like md5(md5(..., there are already topics about it. My question is this: We allow our clients to store their passwords locally. Naturally, we don't want them stored in plan text, so we hmac them locally, before storing and/or sending. Now, this is fine, but if this is all we did, then the server would have the stored hmac, and since the client only needs to send the hmac, not the plain text password, an attacker could use the stored hashes from the server to access anyone's account (in the catastrophic scenario where someone would get such an access to the database, of course). So, our idea was to encode the password on the client once via hmac, send it to the server, and there encode it a second time via hmac and match it against the stored, two times hmac'ed password. This would ensure that: The client can store the password locally without having to store it as plain text The client can send the password without having to worry (too much) about other network parties The server can store the password without having to worry about someone stealing it from the server and using it to log in. Naturally, all the other things (strong passwords, double salt, etc) apply as well, but aren't really relevant to the question. The actual question is: does this sound like a solid security design ? Did we overlook any flaws with doing things this way ? Is there maybe a security pattern for something like this ?

• How to write these two queries for a simple data warehouse, using ANSI SQL?

  I am writing a simple data warehouse that will allow me to query the table to observe periodic (say weekly) changes in data, as well as changes in the change of the data (e.g. week to week change in the weekly sale amount). For the purposes of simplicity, I will present very simplified (almost trivialized) versions of the tables I am using here. The sales data table is a view and has the following structure: CREATE TABLE sales_data ( sales_time date NOT NULL, sales_amt double NOT NULL ) For the purpose of this question. I have left out other fields you would expect to see - like product_id, sales_person_id etc, etc, as they have no direct relevance to this question. AFAICT, the only fields that will be used in the query are the sales_time and the sales_amt fields (unless I am mistaken). I also have a date dimension table with the following structure: CREATE TABLE date_dimension ( id integer NOT NULL, datestamp date NOT NULL, day_part integer NOT NULL, week_part integer NOT NULL, month_part integer NOT NULL, qtr_part integer NOT NULL, year_part integer NOT NULL, ); which partition dates into reporting ranges. I need to write queries that will allow me to do the following: Return the change in week on week sales_amt for a specified period. For example the change between sales today and sales N days ago - where N is a positive integer (N == 7 in this case). Return the change in change of sales_amt for a specified period. For in (1). we calculated the week on week change. Now we want to know how that change is differs from the (week on week) change calculated last week. I am stuck however at this point, as SQL is my weakest skill. I would be grateful if an SQL master can explain how I can write these queries in a DB agnostic way (i.e. using ANSI SQL).

• NSApp Sheets question in cocoa

  Hi, Here's what I am trying to do. I need to prompt the user for a password prompt and until he enters the password and hits, say the Enter button on the sheet, I want to prevent the code being parsed in the background. Here's the code to run the sheet and when the user enters the password and hits Enter, endSpeedSheet is run. I am calling all of this from my Main() function. What I am noticing is that the when the main function runs, the sheet shows up, the user is prompted for a password. But in the background, I already see " Code gets here" has been run. This means the code has already run in the background. What I need is the code to wait at the password prompt and then use this password after the Sheet has been dismissed. • Rendering partial for table row with form_tag is getting crazy!

  I have 23(column)x6(row) table and change the row with link_to_remote function. each tr tag has its own id attribute. change link call change action and change action changes the row using render function wit partial. _change.html.erb <td id="row_1">1</td> . . omitted . . <td id="row_23">23</td> link_to_remote function <%= link_to_remote 'Change', :update => 'row_1', :url => change_path %> change action def change logger.debug render :partial => 'change' end If I coded like above, everything work okay. This means all changed-columns are in one row. But, if I wrap partial code with *form_for* function like below... <% form_for 'change' do %> <td id="row_1">1</td> . . omitted . . <td id="row_23">23</td> <% end %> Then, one column located in one row and that column is the first column. I've looked up the log file, but it was normal html tags. What's wrong?
