• Catching an exception when trying to launch a URL service from within Safari on an iPhone

  Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows - if I have an iPhone app that is registered with a URL service (e.g. alocola://), which means another app can invoke it by calling its URL - is there any way to embed this URL in an HTML page, and catch the exception if the app is not installed on the user's iPhone? Or in other words / more details: I would like to write an app that conforms to some URL invocation (like alocola:// is doing), but would like this app to be launched from a web page read by mobile Safari. However, if the app is not installed on the user's iphone, I would like to be able to display a note saying "you must have the alocola app installed on your iPhone, please download it from the app store by clicking here". Is there a way (perhaps using javascript) to have Safari indicate that the URL cannot be invoked, and catch this in order to display an intelligent message? Thanks :-) Ariel

• Java type for date/time when using Oracle Date with Hibernate

  We have a Oracle Date column. At first in our Java/Hibernate class we were using java.sql.Date. This worked but it didn't seem to store any time information in the database when we save so I changed the Java data type to Timestamp. • C# threading pattern that will let me flush

  I have a class that implements the Begin/End Invocation pattern where I initially used ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem() to do thread my work. I now have the side effect where someone using my class is calling the Begin (with callback) a ton of times to do a lot of processing so ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem is creating a ton of threads to do the processing. That in itself isn't bad but there are instances where they want to abandon the processing and start a new process but they are forced to wait for their first request to finish. Since ThreadPool.QueueUseWorkItem() doesn't allow me to cancel the threads I am trying to come up with a better way to queue up the work and maybe use an explicit FlushQueue() method in my class to allow the caller to abandon work in my queue. Anyone have any suggestion on a threading pattern that fits my needs?

• Generating a Call Hierarchy for dynamicly invoked method

  Hello, Today's world of dynamic invoke, reflection and runtime injection just doesn't play well with traditional tools such as ctags, doxygen and CDOC. I am searching for a method call hierarchy visualization tool that can display both static and dynamic method invocations. It should be easy to use, light during execution and provide helpful detailed information about the recorded runtime session. Now I guess Callgrind could be considered a valid solution for the family C. What tool / technique could you suggest to create a call graph for both static and dynamic method invocation for JVM based bytecode? The intended end result is a graphical display (preferably interactive) which can show path from main() to each method that was invoked. During research for this post I stumbled upon javashot, it seems that this is the kind of approach I'm aiming at, I would prefer that this would be integrated into a kind of profiler or alike which than can be used from within my IDE (Eclipse, IntelliJ, Netbeans and alike). • Specify JDK for Maven to use

  Hi all. I am trying to build a Hudson plugin I've modified and it requires jdk1.6. This is fine, but I don't see how I can tell maven where the different jdk is. I've found few mentions on the internet but they don't seem to apply to me. Some suggest adding some config to .m2/settings.xml but I don't have a settings.xml. Plus, I don't want to use 1.6 for all maven builds. One kink is I am using mvn in cygwin, if that matters at all. It appears I should be able to make the specification in the project pom file, but the existing pom is pretty bare. So bottom line is, is there a way to specify a jdk for a single invocation of maven?

• Memory mapped files causes low physical memory

  I have a 2GB RAM and running a memory intensive application and going to low available physical memory state and system is not responding to user actions, like opening any application or menu invocation etc. How do I trigger or tell the system to swap the memory to pagefile and free physical memory? I'm using Windows XP. If I run the same application on 4GB RAM machine it is not the case, system response is good. After getting choked of available physical memory system automatically swaps to pagefile and free physical memory, not that bad as 2GB system. To overcome this problem (on 2GB machine) attempted to use memory mapped files for large dataset which are allocated by application. In this case virtual memory of the application(process) is fine but system cache is high and same problem as above that physical memory is less. Even though memory mapped file is not mapped to process virtual memory system cache is high. why???!!! :( Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• Non-reentrant C# timer

  I'm trying to invoke a method f() every t time, but if the previous invocation of f() has not finished yet, wait until it's finished. I've read a bit about the available timers (this is a useful link) but couldn't find any good way of doing what I want, save for manually writing it all. Any help about how to achieve this will be appreciated, though I fear I might not be able to find a simple solution using timers. To clarify, if x is one second, and f() runs the arbitrary durations I've written below, then: Step Operation Time taken 1 wait 1s 2 f() 0.6s 3 wait 0.4s (because f already took 0.6 seconds) 4 f() 10s 5 wait 0s (we're late) 6 f() 0.3s 7 wait 0.7s (we can disregard the debt from step 4) Notice that the nature of this timer is that f() will not need to be safe regarding re-entrance, and a thread pool of size 1 is enough here.

• How do I write x86 Debug registers from user space on OSX?

  I'd like to play around with the debug MSRs defined in the x86 spec (DR0-7) from my OSX user-space program. Unfortunately, these require CPL == 0 (aka ring 0). I've thumbed through the OSX syscalls and with the exception of kernel_debug nothing really jumps out as a way to access these. It may be the case that they are only available via some higher level interface like kernel_debug, but it's unclear to me if that's the case or if I just haven't found the magic invocation to get to them. Anyone know how to do this?

  Today I was bitten again by "Mutable default arguments" after many years. I usually don't use mutable default arguments unless needed but I think with time I forgot about that, and today in the application I added tocElements=[] in a pdf generation function's argument list and now 'Table of Content' gets longer and longer after each invocation of "generate pdf" :) My question is what other things should I add to my list of things to MUST avoid? Mutable default arguments Import modules always same way e.g. from y import x and import x are different things, they are treated as different modules. Do not use range in place of lists because range() will become an iterator anyway, the following will fail: myIndexList = [0,1,3] isListSorted = myIndexList == range(3) # will fail in 3.0 isListSorted = myIndexList == list(range(3)) # will not same thing can be mistakenly done with xrange: `myIndexList == xrange(3)`.   rdoc --help says: --accessor, -A accessorname[,..] comma separated list of additional class methods that should be treated like 'attr_reader' and friends. Option may be repeated. Each accessorname may have '=text' appended, in which case that text appears where the r/w/rw appears for normal accessors. Does anyone have any working examples of doing this (both the accessor method definition and the rdoc command invocation)? No matter what combination I try, my accessors will not show up in the RDoc output. Thanks.

  When designing an distributed application in Java there seams to be a few technologies that address the same kind of problem. I have briefly read about Java Remote Method Invocation and Java Message Service, but it is hard to really see the difference. Java RMI seams to be more tightly coupled than JMS because JMS use asynchronous communication, but otherwise I don't see any big differences. What is the difference between them? Is one of them newer than the other one? Which one is more common/popular in enterprises? What advantages do they have over eachother? When is one preferred over the other? Do they differ much in how difficult they are to implement? I also think that Web Services and CORBA address the same problem.

• EJB3 Caching Instance Variables

  Hi, I've noticed some strange code on a project I am working on - its a SLSB EJB3, and it uses a private instance variable to maintain a cache of data (it even calls it dataCache or something), with a getter/setter. For EJB2 and bellow, this was a typical EJB antipattern - SLSBs are not meant to retain state in between invocations, theres no guarantee you'll see the same data on a subsequent invocation. One of my colleagues said maybe its ok in EJB3 (we don't have much EJB3 experience), but still, its a Stateless Session Bean - why is it trying to maintain state, this doesn't make sense. Can anyone confirm if this is still a bad idea in EJB3 land, or if somehow it is ok? Thanks if you can help, Justin

• PHP SoapClient: Problems with Distributed WSDL File

  Hello, I have a problem using a distributed WSDL File ( scheme / other definitions are declared outside the actual wsdl) with php's SoapClient. This is the Fault Message I get: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: 'getSomeInfo' already defined. After some googling , it seems to be a bug inside php as someone else discovered exactly the same problem: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=45282 Has there been any bug fix(es)? Any solution to work around this bug? PS: I think posting a code snippet is senseless, since the invocation of the SoapClient ctor using just the WSDL is the only that fails. • cmake, gcc, cuda and -m32 wtf

  Hi all I figured out that CUDA does not work in 64bit mode on my mac (or couldn't get it running so far). Therefore I decided to compile everything for 32bit. I use cmake 2.8 and added the following options add_definitions(-Wall -m32) set(CUDA_64_BIT_DEVICE_CODE OFF) set(CMAKE_MODULE_LINKER_FLAGS -m32) However when it tries to link it it does something like this: /usr/bin/c++ -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 -Wl,-search_paths_first -headerpad_max_install_names CMakeFiles/SimpleTestsCUDA.dir/BlockMatrix.cpp.o CMakeFiles/SimpleTestsCUDA.dir/Matrix.cpp.o ./SimpleTestsCUDA_generated_SimpleTests.cu.o ./SimpleTestsCUDA_generated_BlockMatrix.cu.o -o SimpleTestsCUDA /usr/local/cuda/lib/libcudart.dylib /usr/local/cuda/lib/libcuda.dylib Which fails with a lot of "file is not of required architecture" warnings from ld. Now if I add manually -m32 to the command above it works. However I have no idea how to teach cmake to add -m32 to every gcc (or ld) invocation. So far it does it for nvcc and gcc, but not for linking..

  Hi, I've spent many many hours tonight reading up on implementing the event-based asynchronous pattern Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any articles at all on witting a class that only supports one Async invocation. Every example I've seen assumes that a method call will be called more than once and thus, should have a userState object passed into the MethodNameAsync You'll see that MS makes mention of this in the third bullet point on this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228974(VS.80).aspx under the "Simultaneously Executing Operations" heading. But I'm confused. Should I be using AsyncOperation and AsyncOperationManager classes to have asynchronous functionality where a method can only be called by one thread at a time? A link would also be nice :) Thanks

  Hi guys, I have a question about spring transaction propagation. If I use @Transactional(propagation = Propagation.REQUIRED) to annotate a method m1. When execution logic enter m1, if there is already a transaction, m1 will use that one. When after m1, what about the transaction? It ends or still open?(if I call m1 in another method, and after the invocation there is still other things to do). In summary, I want to know when exiting an annotated method, the transaction ends or still open? Great thanks.
