• Should I use WPF or ASP.NET for my next Web Application development?

  We have a web application that has been built using MySQL / PHP / Javascript+JQuery, with server-side HTML generation. The problem is that of the 10 software developers that work for the company, none are PHP experts (we're all .NET / C# developers). I need to make a recommendation to my management team on which technologies to use as the platform for the next generation of web application products. I want to leverage the .NET / C# expertise which the company has and is otherwise building, and so am inclined to recommend some Microsoft technologies. We don't want a client-side plugin, and we don't need flashy animations/multimedia, so I'm ruling out Silverlight. Is WPF ready for primetime? Is ASP.NET deprecated by WPF? How do I choose between these two technologies? Big Question, I know... I can refine it based on your comments if necessary. Thanks for taking the time.

  I'm using dwilkie's foreigner plugin for rails. I have a table creation statement that looks like: create_table "agents_games", :force => true, :id => false do |t| t.references :agents, :column => :agent_id, :foreign_key => true, :null => false t.references :games, :column => :game_id, :foreign_key => true, :null => false end However, this generates the following SQL: [4;35;1mSQL (2.7ms)[0m [0mCREATE TABLE "agents_games" ("agents_id" integer NOT NULL, "games_id" integer NOT NULL) [0m I want the columns to be called agent_id and game_id - not agents_id and agent_id. How can I prevent Rails from pluralizing the columns? I tried the following in my enviornment.rb file, which didn't help: ActiveSupport::Inflector.inflections do |inflect| inflect.uncountable "agent_id", "game_id" end

• jQuery UI sortable issue with helper offset value being same as scroll offset on FireFox only

  I have a problem with a jQuery UI 1.7.2 sortable list in Firefox, IE7-8 work fine. When I'm scrolled down a bit, the helper element seems to have an offset of the same height that I'm scrolled down which makes it impossible to see which item you originally started dragging. How do I fix this or work around the issue? If there is no fix what is a really good alternative drag-able plugin? • List of objects to JSON to Html Table?

  If I have a list of objects IEnumerable<MyType> myTypes; Is it possible for me to return this to the client as JSON return Json(myTypes); and if so, is it possible for me to convert this (now JSON format) list to a when it gets to the client? Is there any jQuery plugin to do this? The thing is, there's loads of other stuff I need to send as JSON also, so generating a table with a PartialView and embedding that into the JSON is a extra complexity that I'd like to avoid.   Hi all, I'm just getting started with JQuery and the treeview plugin so this should be a relatively easy question: The example code for adding branches to the tree: var newnodes = $("<li><span class='folder'>New Sublist</span><ul>" + "<li><span class='file'>Item1</span></li>" + "<li><span class='file'>Item2</span></li></ul></li>").appendTo("#browser"); $("#browser").treeview({ add: branches }); Works fine for me, but adds the new branch at the end of the tree - instead what I want is to be able to select a specific node and add to that branch. I've managed to get the node being added by using the id of the particular node instead of the whole treeview in - appendTo("nodeID") However I can't get the tree to render correctly, either with: $("nodeID").treeview({ add: branches }); or $("browser").treeview({ add: branches }); or calling it on both without arguments.   Hello all, I am trying to connect to a SVN server in order to import my project into it with svn+ssh authentication method. I am using the NetBeans IDE (6.8) with subversion plugin installed on Windows XP SP2. I have plink installed with its path set in the Windows PATH env variable. When I use the similar looking repository URL (XXXX and YYYY replaced with sensible things) svn+ssh://XXXX@YYYY/home/dce/svn/trunk along with this external tunnel command plink -l <myUserName> -i C:\\privateKey.ppk I keep getting this error: org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: Network connection closed unexpectedly I searched about it on the Internet and tried many things but didn't work out. Please help if anybody has some idea what may be going wrong. Thanks a lot in advance.

• How to express inter project dependencies in Eclipse PDE

  I am looking for the best practice of handling inter project dependencies between mixed project types where some of the projects are eclipse plug-in/OSGI bundle projects (an RCP application) and others are just plain old java projects (web services modules). Few of the eclipse plug-ins have dependencies on Java projects. My problem is that at least as far as I've looked, there is no way of cleanly expressing such a dependency in Eclipse PDE environment. I can have plug-in projects depend on other plug-in projects (via Import-Package or Require-Bundle manifest headers), but not of the plain java projects. I seem to be able to have project declare a dependency on a jar from another project in a workspace, but these jar files do not get picked up by neither export nor launch configuration (although, java code editing sees the libraries just fine). The "Java projects" are used for building services to be deployed on an J2EE container (JBoss 4.2.2 for the moment) and produce in some cases multiple jar's - one for deploying to the JBoss ear and another for use by client code (an RCP application). The way we've "solved" this problem for now is that we have 2 more external tools launcher configurations - one for building all the jar's and another for copying these jar's to the plug-in projects. This works (sort of), but the "whole build" and "copy jars" targets incur quite a large build step, bypassing the whole eclipse incremental build feature and by copying the jars instead of just referencing the projects I am decoupling the dependency information and requesting quite a massive workspace refresh that eats up the development time like it was candy. What I would like to have is a much more "natural" workspace setup that would manage dependencies between projects and request incremental rebuilds only as they are needed, be able to use client code from service libraries in an RCP application plug-ins and be able to launch the RCP application with all the necessary classes where they are needed. So can I have my cake and eat it too ;) NOTE To be clear, this is not so much about dependency management and module management at the moment as it is about Eclipse PDE configuration. I am well aware of products like [Maven], [Ivy] and [Buckminster] and they solve a quite different problem (once I've solved the workspace configuration issue, these products can actually come in handy for materializing the workspace and building the product)

For example, take a look at Google's number of MB of free storage on the Gmail homepage, under the heading that reads "Lots of space". It has a starting number in a <span> tag, and slowly counts upward every second. I'm looking for something similar, but I'd like to be able to specify: The start number The end number The amount of time it should take to get from start to end.   Adobe released projector, debugger and plugin for Flash 10.1 yesterday. on my Mac i've installed the standalone player and debugger in Adobe Flash CS4/Players/ and Adobe Flash CS4/Players/Debug respectively. however, i think i need to download the globalplayer.swc for 10.1 so that Flash CS4 IDE is directed to use the new players. i've searched but i could only find the globalplayer.swc that was released during the 10.1 betas, and i'm not sure if that's the .swc i should use for the final 10.1 release. Adobe's site doesn't mention anything about replacing the .swc to use 10.1 in CS4, so i'm not sure if it's necessary. i've tried creating actionscripts to include flash.ui.Multitouch and flashx.textLayout and neither can be found. i have no idea how to make Flash Professional CS4 use the new APIs available in Flash Player 10.1 suggestions?

• How to escape HAML for Javascript in Sinatra

  I would like to return a list/combobox from an ajax request ("Which on of these do you like?" type thing). I would like to write that little snippet in HAML, which converts it to HTML, but when I do, the page goes blank. I'm assuming this is because the HTML isn't escaped. Is there a way to escape HAML so I can do $("#mydiv").html(response);? Here's the method: post "/something" do # process... haml :"partials/_select", :layout => false, :locals => {:collection => choices} end ... the haml template: %select - collection.each do |item| %option{:value => item.to_s}= item.to_s ... and the javascript: success: function(responseText, statusText, xhr, $form) { $(".dialog_content").append(responseText); } I have tried the sinatra_more plugin and the escape_javascript method, but there's problems with the haml buffer in sinatra.   Hi , I am looking at validation of some text boxes for somethings like required, minlength, max length, email etc... I am able to get examples that work fine on submit button on page. I want to do this validation on a button click which will only raise a ajax request and not submit of page. On internet all the sample is found was with submit button. Is there a easy way to change this code a little bit o make it work for non submit button click or any new jquery or java plugin to do the same. I am using the jquery.validation.js for now. • Using jQuery to listen for an AJAX load that is not loaded using jQuery.AJAX

  Okay, have a bit of a tricky one (for me anyway, i'm pretty rubbish at jQuery/JavaScript). I'm pulling in data using standard AJAX (ie, NOT using a framework like jQuery or whatnot... there is a reason for it) However, I then need to load up a jQuery script as soon as the page has been loaded in. So, here is the question, how do I bind the script once the DOM has been updated? I have been using Ariel Fleser's listen plugin (http://flesler.blogspot.com/2007/10/jquerylisten.html) for picking up on events such as clicks which works a treat, but I can't see how this can be used to listen for a load event. Any ideas? I'm pretty stumped on this one!!

I installed acts-as-commentable-with-threading ( GitHub ), i made and ran the migration like the install instructions said. I have added acts_as_commentable to my Posts model and i have a Comments controller When i add @comment = Comment.build_from(params[:id],1, params[:body] ) I get the error. undefined method `build_from' for # Clearly i am doing something terribly wrong, and i don't really get the example. What should i be feeding to build_from? Can somebody explain this plugin step by step? :) Or is there an easier way to get simple threaded comments?

• StreamWriter Problem - 2 Spaces Written as Hex '20 c2 a0' instead of Hex '20 20'

  I'm writing a bunch of strings to a file using a string writer but I've discovered a problem when I look at the file created in hex, and that is that one of the spaces (x20) is replaced with a non-breaking space instead (xc2 a0) when there are 2 spaces separating words. I don't know if this is a big deal but I would like to know if there is an easy resolution to this? Here's what I'm seeing: 20 c2 a0 53 57 45 45 50 Dump = "  SWEEP" But I would like it to always be: 20 20 53 57 45 45 50 Dump = " SWEEP" Note that the c2 a0 aren't visible here but the dump looks something like 'A.' when I use the Notepad++ Hex Plugin.   So I'm using the ProgressBar JQuery plugin (http://t.wits.sg/misc/jQueryProgressBar/demo.php) to create some static progress bars. What I want to achieve is to from this markup: <span class="progress-bar">10 / 100</span> produce a progress bar with maximum value of 100 and current value of 10. I am using html() method to get the contents of the span and then split() to get the two numbers: $(document).ready(function() { $(".progress-bar").progressBar($(this).html().split(' / ')[0], { max: $(this).html().split(' / ')[1], textFormat: 'fraction' }); }); That doesn't work, any suggestions? I'm pretty sure the problem is with $(this).html().split(' / ')[0] and $(this).html().split(' / ')[1], is that a correct syntax?

  We're developing applications for AppExchange and are trying to figure out the best way to do development and release management. There are several issues around this: 1) Package Prefixes. We are developing code in unmanaged mode and releasing as managed, so we have to add all the package prefixes into the code. Is there a way to do this dynamically at runtime? Right now we're using an Ant script, which stops us benefitting from the force.com IDE plugin. 2) Resource files... We are doing some ajax-ey stuff and as a result have a few different resource files we upload, some of which are multiple file resources (zip files). Has anyone automated the building of these resources using ANT, and does that work well? Our environment seems very fragile and works for some developers and not others; have other people had this problem? How did you resolve it?

• ANTLR parser hanging at proxy.handshake call

  I am attempting to get a basic ECMAScript parser working, and found a complete ANTLR grammar for ECMAScript 3, which appears to compile ok and produces the appropriate Lexer/Parser/Walker Java files. (Running inside ANTLR IDE plugin for Eclipse 3.5) However, when actually trying to use it with some simple test code (following guide on ANTLR wiki), it just hangs when trying to create the parser: CharStream MyChars = new ANTLRFileStream(FileName); // FileName is valid ES3Lexer MyLexer = new ES3Lexer(MyChars); CommonTokenStream MyTokens = new CommonTokenStream(MyLexer); MyTokens.setTokenSource(MyLexer); ES3Parser MyParser = new ES3Parser( MyTokens ); // hangs here ES3Parser.program_return MyReturn = MyParser.program(); I've tracked down the problem to inside the ES3Parser constructor, where it's calling the function proxy.handshake() - before this line I can successfully do System.out.println("text") but after it I get nothing. So, how do I go about finding out why it's hanging, and stopping it - or even just bypassing this section (can/should I disable debugging?) - so long as that lets it work and allows me to get on with doing useful stuff.

• Regasm writes mscoree.dll into Registry key InprocServer32

  When I register my .NET Assembly with regasm.exe the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{111E32AD-4BF8-495F-AB4D-6C61BD463EA4}\InprocServer32 is set to "mscoree.dll". However, I am trying to mimic an existing COM-Server that was written in C. When registering this old COM-server the InprocServer32 is set to the full path to this component. Unfortunately the existing system (a plugin host that I can not change) reads and use this value - an is confused by the "mscoree.dll" value. My solution might be to patch this registry entry manually - but I would like to understand why regasm writes "mscoree.dll" into InprocServer32 .

  Is it possible (and does it make sense) to use the JDO Level 2 Cache for the Google App Engine Datastore? First of all, why is there no documentation about this on Google's pages? Are there some problems with it? Do we need to set up limits to protect our memcache quota? According to DataNucleus on Stackoverflow, you can set the following persistence properties: datanucleus.cache.level2.type=javax.cache datanucleus.cache.level2.cacheName={cache name} Is that all? Can we choose any cache name? Other sources on the Internet report using different settings. Also, it seems we need to download the DataNucleus Cache support plugin. Which version would be appropriate? And do we just place it in WEB-INF/lib or does it need more setup to activate it?

  Hi Team, Using: http://home.aland.net/sundman/ to split a complex form in to 4 steps. As well as as the 'next, back and submit' form buttons, I have created a menu above the form: step 1, step 2, step 3, step 4 linking to the hash tags #: #, #1, #2, #3 so the visitor can decide which step they want to view / edit. This works fine in firefox, but in IE and Chrome it does not seem to work. Anyone have experience with hte jQuery history plugin that can tell me the best way to accomplish this? I would like to link to the form but it is in a password protected area and subject to our NDA. If need be I could try and replicate the issue with a form on our server and link here. Thanks, Jack
