• What are the factors affecting a new programming language?

  I am developing a new general-purpose programming language of my own design. It's currently my own personal project. I have read of some experts saying that new languages do not usually survive (unfortunately I can't find a reference to that right now). What are the most substantial problems that a new language faces? The language syntax is similar to C/Python families, it does not use S-expressions, and it is an imperative language, but I'm doing first-class functions in it to provide the facilities of currying. In particular, I am concentrating on translating the source language to an intermediate language for execution by an interpreter, but I'm not in a position to translate to native code yet. What would be the issues with that? I've not personally used many non-native code languages, so I'm not well aware of the performance issues on today's machines. I also can't decide upon a lexer and parser generator. What would be the pros and cons of Flex and Yacc vs. hand-made? And what benefits will LLVM provide? I need to get the interpreter ready as quickly as possible. Finally, what factors will affect the language's use post release? I am planning a small library of essentials and full documentation for the first phase.

• Communicating between PHP and Java using ActiveMQ/Stomp

  Background I have two services that need to communicate with each other over a message queue. One is a legacy service written in PHP and the other is in Java. Sooner than later, the PHP service will be rewritten in Java. The current way they communicate with each other is to write to a shared database, which the other service polls. This is what I'm trying to get away from and replace with a message queue. Problem The communication I'm working on right now is from the PHP service to the Java service. It needs to send a relatively complex object (strings and and integers and lists and maps of strings and integers). Ideally, the solution would be workable in PHP and ideal in Java, as that's going to be the legacy of this project. Possible Solutions 1.

• XNA and C# vs the 360's in order processor

  Having read this rant, I feel that they're probably right (seeing as the Xenon and the CELL BE are both highly sensitive to branchy and cache ignorant code), but I've heard that people are making games fine with C# too. So, is it true that it's impossible to do anything professional with XNA, or was the poster just missing what makes XNA the killer API for game development? By professional, I don't mean in the sense that you can make money from it, but more in the sense that the more professional games have phsyics models and animation systems that seem outside the reach of a language with such definite barriers to the intrinsics. If I wanted to write a collision system or fluid dynamics engine for my game, I don't feel like C# offers me the chance to do that as the runtime code generator and the lack of intrinsics gets in the way of performance. However, many people seem to be fine working within these constraints, making their successful games but seemingly avoiding any of the problems by omission. I've not noticed any XNA games do anything complex other than what's already provided by the libraries, or handled by shaders. Is this avoidance of the more complex game dynamics because of teh limitations of C#, or just people concentrating on getting it done? In all honesty, I can't believe that AI war can maintain that many units of AI without some data oriented approach, or some dirty C# hacks to make it run better than the standard approach, and I guess that's partly my question too, how have people hacked C# so it's able to do what games coders do naturally with C++?

• MultiCast Messages to multiple clients on the same machine

  Im trying to write a server/service that broadcasts a message on the lan ever second or so, Kind of like a service discovery. The message needs to be received by multiple client programs that could be on the same machine or different machines. But there could be more than one program on each machine running at the same time. Im using delphi7, with indy 9.0.18 where im stuck is if i should be using UDP or IP MultiCast or if its even possible... Ive managed to get it to work with IP Multi Cast with one client per machine, but even after many trys with different bindings.. max/min ports etc, i cant seem to find a solution.

• Seemingly useless debugging environment for Android

  I've just started debugging my first three line long android app and I can't seem to use the debug tool like I want to. Here's my code: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); int a = 1 / 0; } Now I expect the debugger to halt the thread and show me the line number of statement where the division by zero occurs. No, instead it shows some other method internal to the system for which I have no source. To make the matters worse, there is no exception message either. Prior to this app, I created one which would do something when a button was pressed. If any exception was raised, again no useful line number or exception message would be shown. As of right now, there is no way to debug my app. Any ideas? I'm using the latest SDK along with Eclipse ADT plugin and debugging on a real device (Nexus One).

For that i established connection to that remote server, and i can now see that database . but when i tried to restore database fro my local machine i'm getting an error message when i tried to give backup file location. Below is the error message The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_availablemedia', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. The user does not have permission to perform this action. • Proper way of utilizing gearman with my php application.

  For now I just want to use Gearman for background processing. For example, I need to email a recipient that they have a private message waiting for them once the sender submits their message into the DB. I assume I can run the worker/client and server on my primary server but I have no problems offloading some of the tasks to a different web server. Anyways, my question is how do I handle multiple "functions?" Let's say I need a job that handles the email portion and a job to handle image manipulation. Can I have multiple functions in the worker? I've followed a couple of examples I found online but each example only shows one function being initialized. Do I have to start up multiple "workers" to handle multiple functions?

When I send a normal request, everything works but adding a file as a parameter makes the signature invalid. Example: @access_token.post("http://.../imageresource", {:name=>"awesome cat"}) works great but gives me: <error> <message>images/POST: Request has neither file data nor a fileUrl from which to download data</message> </error> Any thoughts on this? • How can I block based on URL (from address bar) in a safari extension

  I'm trying to write an extension that will block access to (configurable) list of URLs if they are accessed more than N times per hour. From what I understand, I need to have a start script pass a "should I load this" message to a global HTML page (who can access the settings object to get the list of URLs), who will give a thumbs up/thumbs down message back to the start script to deny/allow loading. That works out fine for me, but when I use the usual beforeLoad/canLoad handlers, I get messages for all the sub-items that need to be loaded (images/etc..), which screws up the #accesses/hour limit I'm trying to make. Is there a way to synchronously pass messages back and forth between the two sandboxes so I can tell the global HTML page, "this is the URL in the window bar and the timestamp for when this request came in", so I can limit duplicate requests?   I have tester.php file which I want to run on the browser and I have created symlink to it in my public_html folder, but still when I try to run it, its not working and gives me following error message. Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.   I am trying to create a simple animation which includes face of a famous character. For example Santa Clause. The face and the lips of the character will act according to the given input message. For example if a string is inputed then the lips of the character will be opened and closed till the end of the string while the given input message is vocalized using a text to speech converter. Moreover if the " :) " is used the character in the animation will smile. How could I do this? I was told that I can create this type of animations using "smill". But this is not convenient for the other purposes therefore I need to use a different method. Could you give me any suggestions? Thanks in advence.

  I'm trying to use file_get_contentsO() to get the response from a server and this error was encountered. Could someone tell me what is the reason and how to fix it? The portion of the code is: $api = "http://smpp5.routesms.com:8080/bulksms/sendsms?username=$username&password=$password&source=$source&destination=$destin&dlr=$dlr&type=$type&message=$message"; $resp = file_get_contents($api); The server responded correctly while I pasted the url in the browser. I learned that this is caused by the server rejecting the client's HTTP version, but I have no idea why that is happening in my case. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

  1.) I have a main method Processing, which takes string as an arguments and that string contains some x number of tasks. 2.) I have another method Status, which keeps track of first method by using two variables TotalTests and CurrentTest. which will be modified every time with in a loop in first method(Processing). 3.) When more than one client makes a call parallely to my web service to call the Processing method by passing a string, which has different tasks will take more time to process. so in the mean while clients will be using a second thread to call the Status method in the webservice to get the status of the first method. 4.) when point number 3 is being done all the clients are supposed to get the variables(TotalTests,CurrentTest) parallely with out being mixed up with other client requests. 5.) The code that i have provided below is getting mixed up variables results for all the clients when i make them as static. If i remove static for the variables then clients are just getting all 0's for these 2 variables and i am unable to fix it. Please take a look at the below code.   Is there a way to detect if a httphandler has started transmitting? I'm trying to do large dynamic Excel Exports (in html table format). I can do this, but there's a long delay from the httphandler getting the message and starting the download. I have turned off the output buffer, so the delay seems to be waiting for the SQL server to dump the data into the sqldataset. Anyways, I'd like to send the user to a new page, have the page display a message, and automatically close once the httphandler has started sending the file. Is there a way to detect if the first file headers have been sent? Many thanks in advance!

• The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request - uploading less 2MB file size?

  The file succeed to upload when it is 2KB or lower in size. The main reason why I use streaming is to be able to upload file up to at least 1 GB. But when I try to upload file with less 1MB size, I get bad request. It is my first time to deal with downloading and uploading process, so I can't easily find the cause of error. • Save File to Sharepoint Server using JAX-WS

  I'm trying to save a file to a Sharepoint server using JAX-WS. The web service call is reporting a success, but the file doesn't show up. I used this command (from a WinXP) to generate the Java code to make the JAX-WS call: wsimport -keep -extension -Xnocompile http://hostname/sites/teamname/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx?WSDL I get a handle on the web service which I called port using the following: CopySoap port = null; if (userName != null && password != null) { Copy service = new Copy(); port = service.getCopySoap(); ((BindingProvider) port).getRequestContext().put(BindingProvider.USERNAME_PROPERTY, userName); ((BindingProvider) port).getRequestContext().put(BindingProvider.PASSWORD_PROPERTY, password); } else { throw new Exception("Holy Frijolé! Null userName and/or password!"); } I called the web service using the following: port.copyIntoItems(sourceUrl, destUrlCollection, fields , "Contents of the file".getBytes(), copyIntoItemsResult, copyResultCollection) The sourceUrl and the only url in destUrlCollection equals "hostname/sites/teamname/Tech Docs/Sub Folder". The FieldInformationCollection object named fields contains only one FieldInformation. The FieldInformation object has "HelloWorld.txt" as the value for displayName, internalName and value. The type property is set to FieldType.FILE. The id property is set to (java.util.UUID.randomUUID()).toString(). The call to copyIntoItems returns successfuly; copyIntoItemsResult contains a value of 0 and the only CopyResult object set in copyResultCollection has an error code of "SUCCESS" with a null error message. When I look into the "Tech Docs" library on Sharepoint, in the "Sub Folder" there's no file there. Why wouldn't it tell me what I did wrong? Did I just miss a step? Update (Feb 26th, 2011) I've changed my FieldInformation object's displayName and internalName properties to be "Title" as suggested. Still no joy, but a step in the right direction. After playing around with the urls for a bit, I got these results: With both the sourceUrl and the only destination URL equivalent, with no protocol, I get the SUCCESS response but no actual document appears in the document library. With both of the URLs equivalent but with an "http://" protocol specified, I get an UNKNOWN error with "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." as the message. With the source URL an empty string or null, I get an UNKNOWN error with " Value does not fall within the expected range." as the error message.
