  What are some rough performance limits (read/s, write/s) for a single database server (no master-slave architecture), assuming storage on disk? How many read/s, write/s, depending on the kind of disk? (SSD vs non-SSD) , assuming simple operations (select one row by primary key, update one row, correctly indexed). I assume this limit is dependent on disk seek/write. EDIT: My question is more about getting rough metrics of the number of operations a database supports: to be able to know for example, if a new feature triggering 300 inserts/s can be supported without scaling out with additional servers.

• Partitioning Software for Windows 7

  I used to use Patition Magic Pro from Norton to do disk partitioning. Now that I have Windows 7, I have been warned, by the OS itself and later confirmed on the internet, that Partition Magic Pro has compatibility issues with Windows 7. So, I am asking you which software partitioning software do you recommend. It would be great if it was freeware but I know it is hard to find a good parititioning app that's free, so, if you know a good one that's paid, there's no problem and please mention it in your reply. Thanks in advance. P.S. I am aware of "create and format disk partitions feature" of Windows 7, but that's not enough for me. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bits.

• Win7 backup fails with "The system cannot find the file specified" 0x80070002 - has worked before

  I have a 500 GB USB-disk which has been used as a backup device for a few years now, but now fails without telling me why. This is a Dell box with Intel USB-controllers (so the NVIDEA problem does not apply here). I have previously had problems with a Git package marking a non-existent directory for backup (adding it make the backup succeede). The inaccessible boot partition problem described in Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified" does not apply to me. I would appreciate hints on where to look to identify why my backup fails so I can fix it.

• Encryption of external HDD -- accessible from windows without installation

  I would like to use encryption on my external HDD but I would like to be able to access the encrypted data from Windows as well. As suggested in other questions, TrueCrypt is one option here, or I am using momentarily encfs, which is not available for Windows. But my question goes further: I would like to be able to access the encrypted partition from Windows without installation as I will be using it from different Windows machines for which I have no administrator access. My main OS is Linux and I have full root access to that computer. Is there a full disk or file based encryption which I can use cross platform and which does not require installation under Windows? ADDITION: It seems that TrueCrypt provides a portable mode which fulfills my requirements partly: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=truecrypt-portable, but still the TrueCrypt driver needs to be installed by an administrator... pitty Thanks

I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. • Cannot boot from a hard drive

  I have a problem booting from a hdd. I used to have it as my main drive before I bought an SSD, so I had been able to boot from it. But for some reason, now, half a year later, I can't get it to work. I completely erased it, deleting data and partitioning (using EASEUS Partition Master), then I installed Kubuntu (without changing anything in the installer), but it simply won't boot up. It always boots the drive with Windows and when I unplug this drive, it only gives me an error "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable", I guess it's trying to boot from LAN. I tried installing the system on a freshly deleted drive, without any other drives plugged in the pc, but the problems persist. This is how the drives look now (first one has Windows 7 installed, the second one Kubuntu): I am lost. I mean, after doing a fresh wipe and a clean install without altering anything, it should work. But it doesn't. What can be wrong here? Thanks

  I was enjoying a Movie when my Ubuntu suddenly hung. At the next reboot, here is the message: One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /home: waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/.... Press ESC to enter a recovery shell. Problems: When I enter recovery shell, I don't know that to do. If I press Ctrl+D, then the message above will reappear. What should I do? I checked with Ubuntu Live CD and my partition looks OK.

• Why does my computer show a black screen when booting into Windows Vista?

  Today, I removed some old software from dad's vista, and installed SP1. After which the computer restarted and it went into a "black" screen. I left it running for a few hours, and the laptop was really hot. I tried to get into safemode, start from last known good start up, but nothing seemed to work. i know it stops after loading \windows\system32\drivers\cplir.sys what's going on and how can I fix his computer? Update I'm still unable to fix my install. Repair and restoring the OS fail. The laptop has the vista partition built into it. I can't boot through a USB, and my other computer doesn't have a cd/dvd writer Update 2 I tried chkdisk /f and although it fixed some errors, I still get the black screen of death.

  Is there a Linux utility that can create NTFS symbolic links? That is, a link on an NTFS partition that points to another NTFS folder - one that will work within Windows 7, specifically. I wish to relocate a folder that is normally in-use while Windows is running. This machine can already dual-boot into Ubuntu, so I'd like to leverage that. Because the IT staffs in my 10 sites are not capable enough and the steps taken to setup those "in-house project" are also complicated What are the cons I can forsee ? I am able to mount the shares manually, but autofs is just not mounting them. Here are the files I am working with: At the end of /etc/auto.master, I have: ## Mount this test share: /test /etc/auto.test --timeout=60 In /etc/auto.test, I have: test -fstype=cifs,username=testuser,domain=domain.com,password=password ://server/test I then restart the autofs service. However, this does not work. ls-ing the directory does not return any results. I have followed all these guides on the web, and I either don't understand them, or they.just.don't.work. Thank You

• Excel: What formula combines this data into one COUNT amount?

  I have 30 colleagues who are answering questions over 3 time periods. Each has their own Excel workbook with the questions, and over the year they update it. I collate their worksheets into one master worksheet, but now need to combine their answers into a simple table. The questions, the time periods and then a COUNT of how many answered it. For example: I need a table that shows me how many people (not the persons name at this point) answered question 10 in time period 2. I can't use a database before someone mentions it ;).   I wonder is that possible for OS to make bad sectors on Hard Drive? Preface: I have bought new HDD on 1Tb WB Caviar Black. I have installed new OS on ext4 partition Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. After few days S.M.A.R.T. of the Ubuntu's Disk Utility show that my hard has bad sectors! I have checked on S.M.A.R.T. immediately after installing OS - all was OK. During new OS working I have noticed some strange with HDD - all OS was freezed from 20 sec to 1 min and I have heard like HDD's engine restarting. At the dmes I have found something like this: [40085.407947] ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0

• How to recover C:\Users folder

  Today I was moving C:\Users to another partition using symlink method. I had the great idea of making the symlink from C:\Users = U:\, instead of C:\Users = U:\Users. Sadly, I've deleted the original "Users" folder and now, when I try to login, it says that The User Profile Service failed the logon. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is because the root directory of user profiles isn't the system one, so now when I create C:\Users, I can't log into Windows and I get the above error message. How can create a new C:\Users directory and workaround the problem? Thank you in advance!

• Dovecot/Postfix-mysql e-mail Aliases are not correctly forwarded

  I recently set up Dovecot/postfix-mysql on my Debian Squeeze Server and I have a bit of a problem. When ever I send a email to an alias ([email protected] forwarded to [email protected] for example) Postfix (or Dovecot, I'm not quite sure) puts this email into a Mailbox rather than forwarding it to the real Mail-Adress. I have tested all the MySQL queries and they all behave the way I intend them to do. foobar dovecot: deliver([email protected]): msgid=<000001385b464c9a-e40af11e-3bf4-49f6-903d-1d2369f6bfb6-000000@barfoo: saved mail to INBOX master.cf main.cf Keep in mind that normal E-Mail sending and receiving works just fine! I have set up my MySQL Tables with Postfixadmin. Thanks for your help!

• Windows 7 Bootcamp to see data doubler SATA SSD in Optical Bay Connector

  Hi I purchased a OWC data doubler http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ ... Long story short it lets you add a second HD to your macbook pro in place of the cd/dvd drive (which is useless anyway, impossible to get stuff out when stuck). My current setup is 600gb intel SSD bootdrive 100gb partition for OSX / 500gb for Windows 7 Prof from Bootcamp (use 99 % of time). My desire is to have a second 300gb SSD to run disk intensive VM's off of. So I added a second 300gb intel SSD (again, NO desire to boot off of) on the sata optical port. I can see the drive no problem if I boot in to OSX, however, can't see it in disk management on Win7 ??? Any ideas similar experience ... Funny thing is I can see it in "Device Manager Disk Drivers" but not Disk Management ??? Also no I don't want to use Fusion/Parallels this is a waste of resources for me.

• RHEL raw device (over VMware RDM) performance issues

  I'm running RHEL 5.3 over vSphere 4.0U1. I configured multiple LUNs on my NetApp (Fibre) storage, and added the RDM on two (Linux) VMs, using the Paravirtual SCSI adapter. One LUN is 100GB in size, successfully mapped to /dev/sdb on both VMs, 5 more are 500MB in size (mapped to /dev/sd{c-g}. I also created one partition per device. I have encountered two issues: First, writing directly to /dev/sdb1 gives me ~50MB/s, while any of the /dev/sd{c-g}1 gives me ~9MB/s. There is no difference in configuration of the LUNs apart from their size. I am wondering what causes this but this is not my main problem, as I would settle for 9 MB/s. I created raw devices using udev pretty straightforwardly: ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sdb1", RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 %N" per device Writing to any of the new raw devices dramatically slows down performance to just over 900KB/s. Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? Thanks in advance, -- jifa

• DVD ROM not working only in windows?

  I have an Asus N53SV laptop, My DVD rom doesn't read any type of DVD in windows , but I just installed windows 7 from a bootable DVD , I think this problem occurred after I tried to change my partitioning with paragon partition magic , I was trying to shrink , join and so , after that my windows showed an error that windows cannot find [weird address] on hard disk every time on starts. windows itself says the DVD drive works correctly and driver is working properly, but no DVD or CD can be read , note that the DVD I'm trying to read is the same DVD which I used to install windows some minutes ago. I don't know what's the problem

• Why doesn't SuperGenPass work on some sites when I use Chrome?

  Bookmarklet SuperGenPass sometime fails to popup when I click the bookmark in Chrome. It does however work when on the same page works in Firefox; an example is http://www.engadget.com/login This behaviour also replicated on a new Chrome tab (understandably, there is no domain), but some sites just fail to launch it meaning you have to go to another site, open it up, enter in [something] to get the 'Regenerate password' link, enter the domain manually then finally enter your master password to get the generated password! Something about the makeup of the page seems to make SuperGenPass think that it isn't able/required to popup. The FAQ doesn't make any mention of this fact, neither does a quick Google turn up anything that looks relevant. Does anyone else have the same issue? How can it be fixed? I'm on Windows using the current release of Chrome (5.x at the moment, but probably 18.x by the time you read this next week based on Google's seemingly logarithmic release numbering).

  I'm having an issue regarding a disk imaging process. I have a WinPE image that will re-partition, the hard drive, and put a boot-able image on it. When I run the imaging process from an initial state, I get the following error remove disks or other media press any key to restart If I run the process subsequent times, It will work as desired, but I'm still interested in getting the process to work the first time. How do I figure out what's going on here? what should I be looking at? I'm a little bit out of my depth here, I don't know what to do next

• Clone a 2TB WD Green internal drive with bad sectors to a 3TB partitioned external

  I have a 2TB WD Black drive and would like to simply do a straight clone from a failing 3TB drive to it. Both are SATA. Will I be able to just install the new drive alongside the faulty one and then do the clone/rescue attempt with ddrescue or is there a better method? The faulty internal drive mentioned has bed sectors although am usually able to boot into Windows 7 Ultimate with it and navigate and access all my programs. I have been attempting some trials with an Ubuntu Live CD using ddrescue but am not sure I'm doing it right. I have a 3TB WD my book essential external which is GPT and have created a separate 2TB partition on it which I am trying to clone to. I assume I need to format the new drive first to NTFS? Can I do that via the Ubuntu Rescue Remix 12-04 live DVD that I've been booting with?
