• Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Researcher

- by Yolande
In a new interview titled “Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Research,” Garretón shares her first-hand experience developing with Java and Java 7 for very large-scale integration (VLSI) of computer-aided design (CAD). Garretón gives an insightful overview of how Java is contributing to the parallelism development and to the Electric VLSI Design Systems, an open source VLSI CAD application used as a research platform for new CAD algorithms as well as the research flow for hardware test chips. Garretón considers that parallelism programming is hard and complex, yet important developments are taking place. "With the addition of the concurrent package in Java SE 6 and the Fork/Join feature in Java SE 7, developers have a chance to rely more on existing frameworks and dedicate more time to the essence of their parallel algorithms." • I cannot rename files in bulk using ubuntu's rename feature

- by user254174
I cannot rename files in bulk using ubuntu's rename feature. The files are on a NTFS partition. I want to rename files that look like this: whatever pic george.jpg tacoma narrows bridge.jpg green bottle.jpg to: filename (1) filename (2) filename (3) And I cannot do this at all. I don't want to use the command line either. So I can permanently erase files after I have encrypted them without exposing their contents to people who use a file recovery tool. I also don't want a method that takes days or months to rename the file. That is, rename one file at a time. So if I have hundreds of files to rename, this won't be a option. I want to give a each file the same name and numbered in order like shown above. Pyrenamer is not an option for me, unless you can find how to do that in PyRenamer.

• Disable automount in Nautilus

- by jimmybondy
I have added my mount devices in /etc/fstab and they get correctly mounted (2nd partition with ntfs and nas-share with nfs). I have also disabled automount in Nautilus preferences by using dconf-editor (following this post): user@server:~$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.media-handling org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount false org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount-open false org.gnome.desktop.media-handling autorun-never false Now i see every mount device twice in Nautilus (the entry in fstab already mounted). When clicking on the other entry i get the eligible message mount.nfs: /media/nas_share is busy or already mounted How i can i disable the appearente of those devices in Nautilus? EDIT Regarding automount: I have only one line in /etc/auto.master: +auto.master

• Mount drives at `/drivename` from nautilus

- by Anwar Shah
I want to mount my other drives (mostly ntfs and fat) on /drivename by clicking on the drive icon in the nautilus side pane, where "drivename" refers to the label of the drive. By default nautilus (actually the udisks program) mounts drives in /media/ folder with drive name. How can I achieve this?. Note: Please do not suggest doing this by editing /etc/fstab file. I want this feature in nautilus and after clicking the drive should also be seen in the side pane. (should not be hidden). Edit: Seems to be some have misunderstood this. I don't want to mount in / but as /Main, where "Main" is the label of my ntfs partition. To make it clear, suppose I have two partitions named as "Work" and "Main". I want them to mount at /Work and /Main respectively, when clicked on their icon in nautilus

• Can find any /.ecryptfs dir to retrieve my encrypted home dir

- by Roberto de Armas
At firs sorry for my english, it isn't my native languaje. I've readed some questions similar but no the exactly whith the same problem. I've moved my home directory to a separated partitión (Ubuntu 11.10) following this tutorial http://www.ubuntu-es.org/node/58233 After checking that they were all my files and folders (forgetting that one of dirs was encrypted by ecryptfs) i've installed fedora 16. Well, suprised when in my home folder was an Readme.txt advising me that my folder was unmounted for security reasons and proposing to type in comand line "ecryptfs-mount-Private" (din't work) or make click on labeled icon "acces your private data desktop" (neither din't work). After three days reading all i could find on the internet, i follow The Dustin Kirkland tutorial in http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2011/04/introducing-ecryptfs-recover-private.html, but any /.ecryptfs was found. I'm sure that the data are somewere (the size of the moved dir is identical to the original one). Any help would by greatly appreciated. Thaks a lot.

• DBCC CHECKDB (BatmanDb, REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) – Are you Feeling Lucky?

- by David Totzke
I’m currently working for a client on a PowerBuilder to WPF migration. It’s one of those “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you” kind of clients and the quick-lime pits are currently occupied by the EMC tech…but I’ve said too much already. At approximately 3 or 4 pm that day users of the Batman[1] application here in Gotham[1] started to experience problems accessing the application. Batman[2] is a document management system here that also integrates with the ERP system. Very little goes on here that doesn’t involve Batman in some way. The errors being received seemed to point to network issues (TCP protocol error, connection forcibly closed by the remote host etc…) but the real issue was much more insidious. Connecting to the database via SSMS and performing selects on certain tables underlying the application areas that were having problems started to reveal the issue. You couldn’t do a SELECT * FROM MyTable without it bombing and giving the same error noted above. A run of DBCC CHECKDB revealed 14 tables with corruption. One of the tables with issues was the Document table. Pretty central to a “document management” system. Information was obtained from IT that a single drive in the SAN went bad in the night. A new drive was in place and was working fine. The partition that held the Batman database is configured for RAID Level 5 so a single drive failure shouldn’t have caused any trouble and yet, the database is corrupted. They do hourly incremental backups here so the first thing done was to try a restore. A restore of the most recent backup failed so they worked backwards until they hit a good point. This successful restore was for a backup at 3AM – a full day behind. This time also roughly corresponds with the time the SAN started to report the drive failure. The plot thickens… I got my hands on the output from DBCC CHECKDB and noticed a pattern. What’s sad is that nobody that should have noticed the pattern in the DBCC output did notice. There was a rush to do things to try and recover the data before anybody really understood what was wrong with it in the first place. Cooler heads must prevail in these circumstances and some investigation should be done and a plan of action laid out or you could end up making things worse[3]. DBCC CHECKDB also told us that: repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKDB Yikes. That means that the database is so messed up that you’re definitely going to lose some stuff when you repair it to get it back to a consistent state. All the more reason to do a little more investigation into the problem. Rescuing this database is preferable to having to export all of the data possible from this database into a new one. This is a fifteen year old application with about seven hundred tables. There are TRIGGERS everywhere not to mention the referential integrity constraints to deal with. Only fourteen of the tables have an issue. We have a good backup that is missing the last 24 hours of business which means we could have a “do-over” of yesterday but that’s not a very palatable option either. All of the affected tables had TEXT columns and all of the errors were about LOB data types and orphaned off-row data which basically means TEXT, IMAGE or NTEXT columns. If we did a SELECT on an affected table and excluded those columns, we got all of the rows. We exported that data into a separate database. Things are looking up. Working on a copy of the production database we then ran DBCC CHECKDB with REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS and that “fixed” everything up. The allow data loss option will delete the bad rows. This isn’t too horrible as we have all of those rows minus the text fields from out earlier export. Now I could LEFT JOIN to the exported data to find the missing rows and INSERT them minus the TEXT column data. We had the restored data from the good 3AM backup that we could now JOIN to and, with fingers crossed, recover the missing TEXT column information. We got lucky in that all of the affected rows were old and in the end we didn’t lose anything. :O All of the row counts along the way worked out and it looks like we dodged a major bullet here. We’ve heard back from EMC and it turns out the SAN firmware that they were running here is apparently buggy. This thing is only a couple of months old. Grrr…. They dispatched a technician that night to come and update it . That explains why RAID didn’t save us. All-in-all this could have been a lot worse. Given the root cause here, they basically won the lottery in not losing anything. Here are a few links to some helpful posts on the SQL Server Engine blog. I love the title of the first one: Which part of 'REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS' isn't clear? CHECKDB (Part 8): Can repair fix everything? (in fact, read the whole series) Ta da! Emergency mode repair (we didn’t have to resort to this one thank goodness) Dave Just because I can… [1] Names have been changed to protect the guilty. [2] I'm Batman. [3] And if I'm the coolest head in the room, you've got even bigger problems...

• Silverlight Cream for April 09, 2010 -- #835

- by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Tim Heuer, smartyP, and Kevin Moore. From SilverlightCream.com: Using XNA libraries in your Silverlight Windows Phone 7 applications Tim Heuer has a post up using XNA on WP7 to hook up sound to a 'normal' Silverlight WP7 app... so there ya go! Example Pivot Control for Windows Phone 7 smartyP acknowledges that he said he was done with the Pivot control for WP7 and yes he realizes we're most likely going to get one from Microsoft, but just like the rest of us, he just couldn't leave it alone :) Bag of Tricks Update (two years in the making) I found this via Cool view transitions using ZapScoller by Rudi Grobler, and it points at Kevin Moore's Bag of Tricks Update for Silverlight 4 and WPF ... just the fact that Robby Ingebretsen is using it means we should all rush to CodePlex and absorb it :) Stay in the 'Light! • How To Enlarge a Virtual Machine’s Disk in VirtualBox or VMware

- by Chris Hoffman
When you create a virtual hard disk in VirtualBox or VMware, you specify a maximum disk size. If you want more space on your virtual machine’s hard disk later, you’ll have to enlarge the virtual hard disk and partition. Note that you may want to back up your virtual hard disk file before performing these operations – there’s always a chance something can go wrong, so it’s always good to have backups. However, the process worked fine for us. • How to automatically mount hibernated NTFS to read-only?

- by Piotr
Is there any way to set up Ubuntu this way: If I can't mount the filesystem in rw mode, then mount it in ro mode in the same directory. In result I should not come across the notification that the system can't mount the filesystem (Skip or manual fix notification). SO when I start the system I should have my ntfs partitions mounted either in rw or ro mode depends if the windows is hibernated. fstab entry: #/dev/sda7 UUID=D0B43178B43161E0 /media/Dane ntfs defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 "mount -a" result: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda7': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. I have ubuntu 13.10 and win8. I use uefi secure boot.

• Performing a clean database creation using msbuild

- by Robert May
So I’m taking a break from writing about other Agile stuff for a post. :) I’m still going to get back to the other subjects, but this is fun too. Something I’ve done quite a bit of is MSBuild and CI work. I’m experimenting with ways to improve what I’ve done in the past, particularly around database CI. Today, I developed a mechanism for starting from scratch with your database. By scratch, I mean blowing away the existing database and creating it again from a single command line call. I’m a firm believer that developers should be able to get to a known clean state at the database level with a single command and that they should be operating off of their own isolated database to improve productivity. These scripts will help that. Here’s how I did it. First, we have to disconnect users. I did so using the help of a script from sql server central. Note that I’m using sqlcmd variable replacement. -- kills all the users in a particular database -- dlhatheway/3M, 11-Jun-2000 declare @arg_dbname sysname declare @a_spid smallint declare @msg varchar(255) declare @a_dbid int set @arg_dbname = '$(DatabaseName)' select @a_dbid = sdb.dbid from master..sysdatabases sdb where sdb.name = @arg_dbname declare db_users insensitive cursor for select sp.spid from master..sysprocesses sp where sp.dbid = @a_dbid open db_users fetch next from db_users into @a_spid while @@fetch_status = 0 begin select @msg = 'kill '+convert(char(5),@a_spid) print @msg execute (@msg) fetch next from db_users into @a_spid end close db_users deallocate db_users GO Once all users are booted from the database, we can commence with recreating the database. I generated the script that is used to create a database from SQL Server management studio, so I’m only going to show the bits that weren’t generated that are important. There are a bunch of Alter Database statements that aren’t shown. First, I had to find the default location of the database files in the install, since they can be in many different locations. I used Method 1 from a technet blog and then modified it a bit to do what I needed to do. I ended up using dynamic SQL because for the life of me, I couldn’t get the “Filename” property to not return an error when I used anything besides a string. I’m dropping the database first, if it exists. Here’s the code: IF EXISTS(SELECT 1 FROM [master].[sys].[databases] WHERE [name] = N'$(DatabaseName)') BEGIN drop database $(DatabaseName) END; go IF EXISTS(SELECT 1 FROM [master].[sys].[databases] WHERE [name] = 'zzTempDBForDefaultPath') BEGIN DROP DATABASE zzTempDBForDefaultPath END; -- Create temp database. Because no options are given, the default data and --- log path locations are used CREATE DATABASE zzTempDBForDefaultPath; DECLARE @Default_Data_Path VARCHAR(512), @Default_Log_Path VARCHAR(512); --Get the default data path SELECT @Default_Data_Path = ( SELECT LEFT(physical_name,LEN(physical_name)-CHARINDEX('\',REVERSE(physical_name))+1) FROM sys.master_files mf INNER JOIN sys.[databases] d ON mf.[database_id] = d.[database_id] WHERE d.[name] = 'zzTempDBForDefaultPath' AND type = 0); --Get the default Log path SELECT @Default_Log_Path = ( SELECT LEFT(physical_name,LEN(physical_name)-CHARINDEX('\',REVERSE(physical_name))+1) FROM sys.master_files mf INNER JOIN sys.[databases] d ON mf.[database_id] = d.[database_id] WHERE d.[name] = 'zzTempDBForDefaultPath' AND type = 1); --Clean up. IF EXISTS(SELECT 1 FROM [master].[sys].[databases] WHERE [name] = 'zzTempDBForDefaultPath') BEGIN DROP DATABASE zzTempDBForDefaultPath END; DECLARE @SQL nvarchar(max) SET @SQL= 'CREATE DATABASE $(DatabaseName) ON PRIMARY ( NAME = N''$(DatabaseName)'', FILENAME = N''' + @Default_Data_Path + N'$(DatabaseName)' + '.mdf' + ''', SIZE = 2048KB , FILEGROWTH = 1024KB ) LOG ON ( NAME = N''$(DatabaseName)Log'', FILENAME = N''' + @Default_Log_Path + N'$(DatabaseName)' + '.ldf' + ''', SIZE = 1024KB , FILEGROWTH = 10%) ' exec (@SQL) GO And with that, your database is created. You can run these scripts on any server and on any database name. To do that, I created an MSBuild script that looks like this: <Project xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003" ToolsVersion="4.0"> <PropertyGroup> <DatabaseName>MyDatabase</DatabaseName> <Server>localhost</Server> <SqlCmd>sqlcmd -v DatabaseName=$(DatabaseName) -S $(Server) -i </SqlCmd> <ScriptDirectory>.\Scripts</ScriptDirectory> </PropertyGroup> <Target Name ="Rebuild"> <ItemGroup> <ScriptFiles Include="$(ScriptDirectory)\*.sql"/> </ItemGroup> <Exec Command="$(SqlCmd) "%(ScriptFiles.Identity)"" ContinueOnError="false"/> </Target> </Project> Note that the Scripts directory is underneath the directory where I’m running the msbuild command and is relative to that directory. Note also that the target is using batching to run each script in the scripts subdirectory, one after the other. Each script is passed to the sqlcmd command line execution using the .Identity property on the itemgroup that is created. This target file is saved in the file “Database.target”. To make this work, you’ll need msbuild in your path, and then run the following command: msbuild database.target /target:Rebuild Once you’ve got your virgin database setup, you’d then need to use a tool like dbdeploy.net to determine that it was a virgin database, build a change script based on the change scripts, and then you’d want another sqlcmd call to update the database with the appropriate scripts. I’m doing that next, so I’ll post a blog update when I’ve got it working. • ASP.NET MVC Controllers & Actions In Regards To URLs And SEO

- by user1066133
The general idea is that if I were to create an MVC site, simple pages such as the contact and about pages will be placed under the Home Controller. So my URL would look like http://www.mysite.com/home/contact, and http://www.mysite.com/home/about. The above works just fine, but I really don't like the idea of having the "home" portion in the URL. So what negatives would there be if I decided to make a controller name of Contact and About and just added a single Index action so that way the URL would be simplified to http://www.mysite.com/contact and http://www.mysite.com/about. This method looks cleaner. Do any of you do the same or something similar? I've been trying to work on SEO for an escort service site I've developed and when you search for the females the link looks like http://www.mysite.com/escorts/female-escorts, and like-wise for males. I'm wondering if I should remove the Escorts Controller and just create a Female_Escorts Controller with an Index Action only so it comes out like the above as http://www.mysite.com/female-escorts.

• Is running "milli"-benchmarks a good idea?

- by Konstantin Weitz
I just came across the Caliper project and it looks very nice. Reading the introduction to microbenchmarks, one gets the feeling that the developers would not suggest to use the framework if the benchmark takes longer than a second or so. I looked at the code and it looks like a RuntimeOutOfRangeException is actually thrown if a scenario takes longer than 10s to execute. Could you explain to me what the problems are with running larger benchmarks? My motivation for using Caliper was to compare two join-algorithm implementations. Those will definitely run for quite some time and will do some disk IO, yet running the entire database would make it hard to do the comparison, because the configuration of the algorithms and the visualization of the results would be a pain.

• Screen goes nuts and unreadable

- by ChazD
Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions. • How to get Cinnamon working in Virtualbox?

- by kavoura
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (32-bit) in VirtualBox 4.1.8. I wanted to install Cinnamon, so I did and I have the option to choose it from the login screen, as well as GNOME options. If I choose Ubuntu I get Unity, which works fine. GNOME also works. But when I choose Cinnamon, the screen goes black and nothing responds and I have to reset the virtual machine. I have already installed Ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit) onto the PC in a separate partition (currently running 10.10 but trying out 11.10) and in that Cinnamon works perfectly. In VirtualBox I have 3D settings enabled and gave the virtual machine 128 MB graphics RAM, and 1024 MB system RAM. What settings should I change or what should I do to get Cinnamon working in Ubuntu in VirtualBox? I have also tried doing it in LinuxMint 12, but I get the same problem, just a black screen when selecting Cinnamon. So are Cinnamon and VirtualBox incompatible?

• WPF or WinForms for Game Development and learning resources?

- by Stephen Lee Parker
I'm looking to create a game framework for my own personal use... I want to use WPF, but I'm unsure if that is a wise choice... The games I will be writing should not require high performance graphics, so I am hoping to build on native classes... I do not want to rely on external DLL's unless I generate them myself. The games will be for young children, say 4 to 8. Most will be learning puzzles or simple shooters. The most advanced will be a platform game (non-scrolling screen like the old Atari Miner 2049er game). I think I know how to write something like the old Atari Chopper Command (partially written and my 4 year old loves it, but I used WinForms and GDI), Pac-Man, Tetris, Astroids, Space Invaders, Slider Puzzle, but I do not really know how to write the platform game... In my mind, I'm getting caught in collision detection and how to make a character jump and how to make a character walk up a slope or steps... Can anyone point me to information on developing a platform game in C#? Would you suggest WinForms or WPF for game development? I'm not looking for great graphics and speed, just entertaining game play...

• March 2010 Chicago Architects Group Wrap Up

- by Tim Murphy
I would like to thank everyone who came out to last night’s event and especially thank Mike Vogt for the presentation. I think at first everyone glassed over since very few of us spend a lot of time with Integration Architecture and most of us live more in the application architecture space. Learning about subject like BPEL and BPMN was refreshing. The discussion after Mike’s talk was lively and I think that everyone came away with a good idea of areas they might want to know more about. People stuck around long after the meeting was over. If you are interested in the topic you can find the slides here. Be sure to join us next month when Matt Hidinger talks about Onion Architecture. Details are coming soon. del.icio.us Tags: CAG,Chicago Architects Group
