• Ubuntu 12.04 wallpaper problem when using two monitors

  I am using two monitors, the main resolution is 1920x1080 and the secondary is 1440x900. Everything seems to work fine (with default drivers, fglrx crashes bad), besides windows opening in the wrong monitor (even when the main is set correctly), but now what I am trying to fix is the wallpaper problem, here's an image to explain it easier: http://i.imgur.com/msLRR.jpg It also happens with gradients. The secondary monitor is physically aligned like in the image, lower than the other, the wallpaper on the main screen seems to keep the size of the lower resolution, and then it start at the correct resolution the last part at right. Any way to fix this? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome-Shell 3.4.1, the vga is a Radeon HD 6950 UPDATE I went to gnome-tweak-tool and disabled "Have file manager handle the desktop", now it looks ok on both monitors, but I can't have icons on my desktop, so I am still interested in solving it. UPDATE2 Disabling "Have file manager handle the desktop", in gnome-tweak-tool and then re-enabling it seems to work, but has to be done every time you turn on the PC.

• Mouse stopped responding after installing Ubuntu Server

  It was 2 operating systems on my machine, Windows 7 and Ubuntu Desktop 12.04, both 64bit version. All works well, firstly I installed Win, then the Desktop version of Ubuntu, lasts's GRUB rewrites windows's boot and of course added it as a variant to load. Yesterday I wish to play with Ubuntu Server 12.04, and install it as a third operating system. During the installation Server's GRUB seems to rewrite that which installed earlier (background color became black, was purple). Firstly, newly installed GRUB generates me overmuch load options for Ubuntu Desktop, by two for each kernel version (normal and recovery modes). OK, it's bearable, but most thing, that the mouse on this machine is totally stops responding, regardless which operating system I choose to load. Hope somebody help me. Thanks in advance!

• How to make a minimal upgrade?

  I use apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop to install minimal desktop. I want to upgrade my system to the latest version (12.04) with it still being minimal. How do I do that? What I tried:- I tried Update Manager, and it gave me the Option to upgrade to 11.10 first, then to 12.04. What happened after I upgraded to 11.10 is that my desktop got bloated, and instead of the system using 500MB of RAM, now it uses about 1.5GB I can't even start apps anymore.

• gnome-power-manager is running while trying to log in. How to get rid of it?

  After booting into the ubuntu login screen and clicking on my user name and entering the password, I get a dialog stating that gnome-power-manager is still running. The dialog presents 2 buttons, 1 to Cancel and other to Logout Anyway. This issue happens about 50% of the time and I don't remember doing anything related to power management recently. Also, even if I don't choose any option in the dialog it goes away after about 30s. This is happening on a desktop machine as well as a laptop. On the laptop I have configured power management for myself (not for gdm) whereas in desktop I have not configured power management for any user. This is only an annoyance but still I would like to fix it, especially on my desktop where I am interested in getting it auto-login ASAP into my userid. Any ideas why this could be happenning?

• Why do I have Unity and GNOME Classic running at the same time?

  I've recently updated and found that Unity shows on the gnome-classic/fallback desktop. Is this a new feature (which I doubt to be), or a bug? If it is a bug, tell me how to disable Unity because it interferes with the lower panel (i.e. I bring out Trash instead of showing the desktop when I try pressing the "Show desktop" button when the panel is not in focus). I don't encounter this problem in gnome-classic (No effects). Don't judge me. I like pokemon!

• All traffic is passed through OpenVPN although not requested

  I have a bash script on a Ubuntu box which searches for the fastest openvpn server, connects, and binds one program to the tun0 interface. Unfortunately, all traffic is being passed through the VPN. Does anybody know what's going on? The relevant line follows: openvpn --daemon --config $cfile --auth-user-pass ipvanish.pass --status openvpn-status.log There don't seem to be any entries in iptables when I enter sudo iptables --list. • Ubuntu Crashes @ Login Screen

  So, I've been having troubles with the newest Windows Installer for Ubuntu Desktop(http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer). When I start up up the operating system, i enter the login screen of Ubuntu. Everything is fine at that moment except my mouse and keyboard are frozen. Next I hear a "bongo" noise which is obviously the system looping and getting ready to crash. Soon enough, I enter a purple screen with white diagonal short lines in the background. I am then forced to unplug my desktop. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

• Ubuntu freezing after boot

  I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting with windows 7 on my laptop without any problems and felt like doing the same on my desktop. However now that I have installed Ubuntu on the desktop through Wubi, if I boot into ubuntu the log in screen is as far as I get. I see my username and the password box but everything is completely unresponsive. I can move the mouse around the screen fine I just can't click on anything and the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all as I've tried a few shortcuts and there's no response at all. I have done a some searches and I think it's a driver issue but I don't know how to fix them as I'm pretty new to ubuntu and cannot log in at all. Desktop specs if needed: Intel core i7 2700k, NVidia GTX 580, 8GB RAM. Thanks in advance

• PCManFM problems: shuts down unexpectedly, would not always start [closed]

  In Lubuntu 12.04 beta (final release in a few days). I do not remember doing something outrageous to my PCManFM but now it has has a lot of problems: "extract here" menu action wouldn't work (this problem never disappears) the program shuts without obvious reason making the desktop empty (the program can be started in run (alt-f2) but this does not alway restore the desktop) would not start sometimes from its /usr/share/applications.desktop file (or the "Aplication Launch Bar") although it starts in run (alt-f2) (the last problem is temporarily solved if the program is closed in task manager and than restarted with alt-f2) I have reinstalled it to no avail. Any ideas?

• Why Gsettings isn't enough to reset my nautilus settings?

  I'm trying to narrow down a bug (to eventually report it or give up if it'll turn out that resetting a simple setting will be enough to get rid of it) I noticed that with a brand new user the bug doesn't pop up so I tried to reset the config of my user's nautilus I renamed .config/nautilus I renamed .nautilus2 (strange name... why the 2?) and I did a gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.nautilus strangely enough, it didn't work: I previously set up to use my home as the desktop folder, and now the key has correctly been resetted $gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences desktop-is-home-dir false and yet on my desktop I see the contents of my home folder (meaning that the settings have not been resetted) I know that with the transition to gtk3 there've been lots of changes (before I should've used gconf... but now there's dconf and gsettings), so there're quite a bit of question about nautilus... but these unfortunately now seem to be outdated

I was using the following command to copy the file from my desktop to mounted directory. os.system("cp -f /home/Desktop/filename /media/folder_1"). It works fine. But the problem is while copying the file from my source to mounted directory(folder_1) if any interruption is happens like network down, then the system continuously keep on trying. It couldn't skip that process. Finally, when the network comes the files are again copy to my mounted directory. Due to this continuous trying, next time i try to move the content it throws "permission denied" error. How do i copy the file only once, if any network issues happen then it will not keep try to copy, instead of that, it throws the error. If you know, Let me. Its very useful to me.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyJkS8XjgA&feature=youtu.be I managed to take a video with what happens on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop when I play with the volume and hover with the mouse over the slider and when I press Ctrl + Alt + D (show Desktop/minimize all) The real bugs are those in which the panel becomes transparent on the down side, exactly above the volume slider (and not only when that slider appears, but also when brightness slider appears, and when blocking my touchpad applet appears) and when I have a maximized window, more maximized windows or a non maximized window that touches the panel, while I use Ctrl+Alt+D (show Desktop/hide all normal windows). Is there a way to solve this bug? PS: The other bugs are from Record My Desktop. I didn't have the mentioned bugs in ubuntu 12.04, but I like more the graphics in 12.10.

The music is coming from ext4 partition which I am happy to share on the LAN. It should use WiFi not bluetooth (because I hope to use the bluetooth interface for other things, simultaneously). • How to have the game world get rendered on just a part of the screen?

  I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

• ssh tunneling with visualsvn

  I have been asked to setup visualsvn for visual studio 2008 Due to firewall restrictions and server configuration. I need to use ssh tunneling. My problem is this. The local machine needs to connect to a gateway machine via ssh then connect to the subversion server so Local machine ---{ssh}--- gateway ---{ssh}-- subversion server I am not exactly sure of the correct process to do this. It appears that I must start a ssh process using plink to open a local port and forward that to the remote subversion server. eg: plink user@gateway -L 22:192.168.1.1:22 Then when visualsvn starts it uses tortoiseplink to make the actual connection through to the subversion server using svn+ssh://username@localhost:22/myrepo This seems very very clunky. firstly it needs several steps to setup the connection secondly I need plink running which leaves a command prompt on the desktop (clutter = yuck) lastly I need to use two different programs that do the same thing. (plink + tortoiseplink) The problem is that tortoiseplink doesn't run in the background. As soon as I connect to the ssh gateway and enter the password it closes again. So I can't use it to create the initial connection. If I use plink instead of tortoiseplink in visualsvn then I never get prompted for the password. so it just hangs with an open command prompt and no password request. Is there a way to setup visualsvn so that everything happens in one command line? I have searched high and low for a suitable and clean method to tunnel from visualsvn to the remote server and have found very little. it all either assumes one hop (not two like mine) or it glosses over all the hard bits.   I have a system with the following setup: I use: Windows CE 6 R3 Microsoft's Bluetooth stack including all profiles Motorola H500 The Audio Gateway service is up and running (checked through services list in cmd) GSM Module is functional - I am able to set outgoing calls and to answer calls. Bluetooth is functional - the A2DP profile plays music to Motorola headphones (can't remember the model right now) I want to hold a conversation using a headset device. I have included all Bluetooth components in the catalog. I pair the device using the Control Panel applet. When I press the button on the Motorla device to answer a call I get a print by the Audio Gateway: BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: SCOListenThread_Int - Connection Event. BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: SCOListenThread_Int - Connection Event. BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: A Bluetooth peer device has connected to the Audio Gateway. BTAGSVC: Could not open registry key for BT Addr: 2. BTAGSVC: The peer device was not accepted since the user has never confirmed it as a device to be used. So my questions are as follows: What do I need to do to pair the device with the Audio Gateway? Once my device is paired, do I need to set anything else up? (except for the GSM module of course)

The problem is that when I send the Moneris gateway to return a POST array to my new file (cart.php) it gets a 500 Internal Server Error. Here is my dilemma: I have a script (ImageFolio Commerce) that hasn't been updated on our server since.. probably 2003. The script had a Payment Gateway (Moneris) manually added to it by the company who offers the script. This costs $1000 to get them to add a gateway. I now have a new client who purchased this business from the previous owner. While switching the account to the new owner's Moneris account, we found out that things have been updated. Long story short.. The Moneris gateway can send 3 types of responses: POST with XML Data POST GET I imagine it is easiest to just use the POST array. I have the file that it sends the response to. As of now the file responds with a Internal Server error, but it does process the order. What I want to do is determine what the POST array is that is being sent, so that I can take it and echo it in a logical manner. Is there a way to capture and echo the entire POST? This is my controller where I get the purchase attirbutes and create a PaypalExpressResponse object def checkout total_as_cents, purchase_params = get_setup_params(Schedule.find(params[:schedule]), request) setup_response = @gateway.setup_purchase(total_as_cents, purchase_params) redirect_to @gateway.redirect_url_for(setup_response.token) end @gateway is my PaypalExpressGateway object which I create using this method in my controller def assign_gateway @gateway = PaypalExpressGateway.new( :login => api_user, :password => api_pass, :signature => api_signature ) end I got the api_user, api_pass, and api_signature values from my developer.paypal.com account, when I logged in for the first time there was already a sandbox user created as a merchant which is where I got the api credentials from. And finally here is my get_setup_params method: def get_setup_params(schedule, request) purchase_params = { :ip => request.remote_ip, :return_url => url_for(:action => 'review', :only_path => false, :sched => schedule.id), :cancel_return_url => register_path, :allow_note => true, :item => schedule.id } return to_cents(schedule.fee), purchase_params end How ever when I click on the checkout button, I get redirected to a sandbox paypal page saying "This transaction is invalid. Please return to the recipient's website to complete your transaction using their regular checkout flow." I'm not sure exactly what's wrong, I think the problem lies in the credentials but don't know why. Any help will be appreciated. • Errors when switching to specific static IP

  I had a Fedora box running using my static IP 69.169.136.6, etc, all configured according to what the ISP required. Just recently the hard drive failed (and I should have been keeping better backups) - while it is being recovered I would like to put up a webpage on my Archlinux PC explaining the problem - I presently do not have sufficient access to change the DNS record assigned to the domain. When I change my ip address while my system is running to 69.169.136.6, ifconfig reports the new ip address, but http://whatismyip.com/ does not. When I change it and reboot, I can't ping - the message I recieve is "connect: Network is unreachable" (when given one of google.com 's IP addresses - hostnames give me ping: unknown host xxx). Until I have access to the DNS system, what can I do to make this work? Edit: With new IP address, same problem, IP is now 69.169.136.29.
