• Antenna Aligner Part 6: Little Robots

  A week ago I took temporary ownership of a HTC Desire S so that I could start testing my app under Android. Support for Android was not in my original plan, but when Nomad added support for it recently, I starting thinking why not! So with some trepidation, I clicked the Build for Android button on the Nomad toolbar... nothing. Hmm... that's not right, I was expecting something to build. After a bit of faffing around I finally realised that I hadn't read the text on the Android setup page properly (yes that's right, RTFM!), and I needed a two-part application identifier, separated by a dot. I did this (not sure what the two part thing is all about, that one my list to investigate!) After making the change, the Android build worked and created the apk file. I uploaded this to the device and nervously ran it... it worked!!!  Well, more or less! So, there was not splash screen, but this was no surprise because I only have the iOS icons and splash screen in my project at the moment. What was more concerning was the compass update didn't seem to be working. I suspect this is a result of using an iOS specific option in the Phonegap compass watcher. Another thing to investigate. I've also just noticed that the css gradient background hasn't worked either... These issues aside, it was actually more successful than I was expecting, so happy days! Right, lets get Googling...   Next time: Preparing for submission to the App Store! :-)

• Why is my model's scale changing after rotating it?

  I have just started a simple flight simulator and have implemented Roll and pitch. In the beginning, testing went very well; however, after about 15-20 seconds of constantly moving the thumbsticks in a random or circular motion, my model's scale begins to grow. At first I thought the model was moving closer to the camera, but i set break points when it was happening and can confirm the translation of my orientation matrix remains 0,0,0. Is this a result of Gimbal Lock? • New Feature! Automatic Categories for Geekswithblogs.net

  One of the features we have been working on is a way to categorize posts without the need of all our bloggers getting on the same page with what categories we have and making them select the categories.  Johnny Kauffman, one of our team members at AJI Software, developed what we call the Sherlock Project over the past few months.  Sherlock is a category suggestion engine based on the content within the posts.  Now, after a post is published, Sherlock will investigate the content and come up with the suggested categories that content fits in.  This will now allow you to go to the specific topics you are interested in and see all the related posts. This is just the beginning, so many more opportunities will arise now that we have our content organized.  One of the first features I will be adding is RSS feeds for each category and sub category.  If you are into ALM, we will have a feed for that! • How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

  I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015. Update 2: In SystemPrefsMouse there's a lightbulb icon for testing double-click speed. Every working button can turn the bulb on&off, but the missing buttons can't. It would seem that Ubuntu isn't aware of these buttons and thus doesn't register their clicks. I guess I need to hunt for a driver, though a mainstream mouse is probably the easier way.

• Getting Started With Tailoring Business Processes

  In this article, and for the sake of simplicity, we will use the term “On-Premise” to mean a deployment where you have design-time development access to the instance, including administration of the technology components, the applications filesystem, and the database. In reality this might be a local development instance that is then supported by a team who can deploy your customizations to the restricted production instance equivalents. Tools Overview Firstly let’s look at the Design-Time tools within JDeveloper for customizing and extending the artifacts of a Business Process. In essence this falls into two buckets; SOA Composite Editor for working with BPEL processes, and the BPM Studio. The SOA Composite Editor As a standard extension to JDeveloper, this graphical design tool should be familiar to anyone previously worked with Oracle SOA Server. With easy-to-use modeling capability, backed-up by full XML source-view (for read-only), it provides everything that is needed to implement the technical design. In simple terms, once deployed to the remote SOA Server the composite components (like Mediator) leverage the Event Delivery Network (EDN) for interaction with the application logic. If you are customizing an existing Fusion Applications BPEL process then be aware that it does support MDS-based customization layers just like Page Composer where different customizations are used based on the run-time context, like for a specific Product or Business Unit. This also makes them safe from patching and upgrades, although only a single active version of the composite is available at run-time. This is defined by a field on the composite record, available in Enterprise Manager. Obviously if you wish to fire different activities and tasks based on the user context then you can should include switches to fork the flows in your custom BPEL process. Figure 1 – A BPEL process in Composite Editor The following describes the simplified steps for making customizations to BPEL processes. This is the most common method of changing the business processes of Fusion Applications, as over 400 BPEL-based composite applications are provided out-of-the-box. Setup your local Fusion Applications JDeveloper environment. The SOA Composite Editor should be installed as part of the Fusion Applications extension. If there are problems you can also find it under the ‘Check for Updates’ help menu option. Since SOA Server is not part of the JDeveloper integrated WebLogic Server, setup a standalone WebLogic environment for deploying and testing. Obviously you might use a Fusion Applications development instance also. Package the existing standard Fusion Applications SOA Composite using Enterprise Manager and export it as a complete SOA Archive (SAR) file, resulting in a local .jar file. You may need to ask your system administrator for this. Import the exported SAR .jar file into JDeveloper using the File menu, under the option ‘SOA Archive into SOA Project’. In JDeveloper set the appropriate customization layer values, and then change from the default role to the Fusion Applications Customization Developer role. Make the customizations and save the application project. Finally redeploy the composite application, either to a direct Application Server connection, or as a fresh SAR (jar) file that can then be re-imported and deployed via Enterprise Manager. The Business Process Management (BPM) Suite In addition to the relatively low-level development environment associated with BPEL process creation, Oracle provides a suite of products that allow business process adjustments to be made without the need for some of the programming skills.  The aim is to abstract much of the technical implementation and to provide a Business Analyst tools for immediately implementing organization changes. Obviously there are some limitations on what they can do, however the BPM Suite functionality increases with each release and for the majority of the cases the tools remains as applicable as its developer-orientated sister. At the current time business processes must be explicitly coded to support just one of these use-cases, either BPEL for developer use or BPM for business analyst use. That said, they both run on the same SOA Server in much the same way. The components bundled in each SOA Composite Application can be verified by inspection through Enterprise Manager. Figure 2 – A BPM Process in JDeveloper BPM Suite. BPM processes are written in a standard notation (BPMN) and the modeling tools are very similar to that of BPEL. The steps to deploy a custom BPM process are also essentially much the same, since the BPM process is bundled into a SOA Composite just like a BPEL process. As such the SOA Composite Editor  actually has support for both artifacts and even allows use of them together, such as a calling a BPM process as a partnerlink from a BPEL process. For more details see the references below. Business Analyst Tooling In addition to using JDeveloper extensions for BPM development, there are run-time tools that Business Analysts can use to make adjustments, so that without high costs of an IT project the system can be tuned to match changes to the business operation. The first tool to consider is the BPM Composer, deployed with the middleware SOA Server and accessible online, and for Fusion Applications it is under the Business Process icon on the homepage of the Application Composer. Figure 3 – Business Process Composer showing a CRM process flow. The key difference between this and using JDeveloper is that the BPM Composer has a Business Catalog prepopulated with features and functions that can be used, mostly through registered WebServices. This means no coding or complex interface development is required, simply drag-drop-configure. The items in the business catalog are seeded by either Oracle (as a BPM Template) or added to by your own custom development. You cannot create or generate catalog content from BPM Composer directly. As per the screenshot you can see the Business Catalog content in the BPM Project browser region. In addition, other online tools for use by Business Analysts include the BPM Worklist application for editing business rules and approval management configuration, plus the SOA Composer which focuses on non-approval business rules and domain value maps. At the current time there are only a handful of BPM processes shipped with Fusion Applications HCM and CRM, including on-boarding workers and processing customer registrations.  This also means a limited number of associated BPM Templates provided out-of-the-box, therefore a limited Business Catalog. That said, BPM-based extension is a powerful capability to leverage and will most likely develop going forwards, especially for use in SaaS deployments where full design-time JDeveloper access is not available. • Book Review: Professional ASP.Net MVC4

  The past few weeks have been particularly busy as I continue to dedicate a bigger portion of my free time to refreshing my memory and enhancing my knowledge of best practices pertaining to technologies we plan on using for a major upcoming project. In this blog post, I will be providing a brief overview of my latest reading “Professional ASP.Net MVC4” by Jon Galloway, Phil Haack, Brad Wilson and K. Scott Allen. This book is a must read for web developers looking to enhance their MVC expertise with best practices and tips shared from recognized industry experts. This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project.  All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. Chapter 5 covers additional extension methods (Helpers) provided to speed and ease the use of common HTML elements such as forms, textboxes, grids, to name a few… Chapter 6 tackles built-in validation while providing examples and use cases on implementing custom validation that plugs into the MVC framework. Chapters 7 thru 13 discusses the latest on Membership, Ajax, Routing, NuGet and the ASP.Net Web API. Chapters 12 (Dependency Injection) and 13 (Unit Testing) demonstrate a big competitive advantage of MVC with its ease of test-ability and plug-ability. • Input/Output console window in XNA

  I am currently making a simple game in XNA but am at a point where testing various aspect gets a bit tricky, especially when you have to wait till you have 1000 score to see if your animation is playing correctly etc. Of course i could just edit the starting variable in the code before I launched but I have recently been interested in trying to implement a console style window which can print out values and take input to alter public variables during run-time. I am aware that VS has the immediate window which achieves a similar thing but i would prefer mine is an actual part of the game with the intention that the user may have limited access to it in the future. Some of the key things i have yet to find an answer to after looking around for a while are: how i would support free text entry how i would access variables during runtime how i would edit these variable I have also read about using a property grid from windows form aps (and partially reflection) which looked like it could simplify a lot of things but i am not sure how I would get that running inside my XNA game window or how i would get it to not look out of place (as the visual aspect of is seems to be aimed just for development time viewing). All in all I'm quite open to any suggestions on how to approach this task as currently I'm not sure where to start. Thanks in advance.

• Are R&D mini-projects a good activity for interns?

  I'm going to be in charge of hiring some interns for our software department soon (automotive infotainment systems) and I'm designing an internship program. The main productive activity "menu" I'm planning for them consists of: Verification testing Writing Unit Tests (automated, with an xUnit-compliant framework [several languages in our projects]) Documenting Code Updating wiki Updating diagrams & design docs Helping with low priority tickets (supervised/mentored) Hunting down & cleaning compiler/run-time warnings Refactoring/cleaning code against our coding standards But I also have this idea that having them do small R&D projects would be good to test their talent and get them to have fun. These mini-projects would be: Experimental implementations & optimizations Proof of concept implementations for new technologies Small papers (~2-5 pages) doing formal research on the previous two points Apps (from a mini-project pool) These kinds of projects would be pre-defined and very concrete, although new ideas from the interns themselves would be very welcome. Even if a project is too big or is abandoned, the idea would also be to lay the ground work so they can be retaken by another intern or intern team. While I think this is good in concept, I don't know if it could be good in practice, as obviously this would diminish their productivity on "real work" (work with immediate value to the company), but I think it could help bring aboard very bright people and get them to want to stay in the future (which, I think, is the end goal for any internship program). My question here is if these activities are too open ended or difficult for the average intern to accomplish and if R&D is an efficient use of an interns time or if it makes more sense for to assign project work to interns instead.

• How to run multiple distros using lvm

  I've seen quite a few posts around about running multiple distros but not sure they apply to using LVM (and without Windows). I'm using a machine that's about 3 years old. Setup: Intel Core i7 2.8GHz 8GB Ram 1TB SATA HDD At this point, I'd like to install 12.10 and Mint 14, leaving the option open to install additional distros down the road. I could be way off, but I'm thinking about creating at least 2 primary /boot partitions (1 for 12.10 and 1 for Mint) and another partition for LVM leaving room for additional /boot partitions. Then creating a VG and separate LVs for Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14. I understand I can share partitions between the 2 installs, but I'm only using this for testing and I have tons of space to play with. LVM seemed logical considering I may want to install and test additional distros. I guess I could share the /swap partition across the board without problems, right? I'm unclear about GRUB2. How do I handle the bootloader situation? Install 12.10 and get it running then make changes to grub.cfg after installing Mint? And do I not install GRUB for Mint or do I install it in a different location? Any guidance would be appreciated.

  Oracle's Secure Enterprise Search is part of PeopleSoft now.  It is provided as part of the Peopltools platform as an appliance, and is used with applications starting with release 9.2.  Secure Enterprise Search is a rich and powerful search product that can enhance search and navigation in PeopleSoft applications.  It also provides useful features like facets and filtering that are common in consumer search engines.Several questions have arisen about the deployment of SES and how to administer it and insure optimum performance.  People have also asked about what versions are supported on various platforms.  To address the most common of these questions, we are posting this list of tips.Platform SupportSES 11.1.2.2 does not support some of the platforms supported by PeopleTools, such as Windows 2012 and AIX 7.1. However, PeopleSoft and SES can use different operating system platforms when SES is deployed on a separate machine.SES 11.2.2.2 will have the required platform support for PT 8.53 in the future. We are planning to certify PT 8.53 once the testing is complete in 8.54 development and all platform support is released for 11.2.2.2.ArchitectureWe recommend running SES on a separate machine (from your apps) for two reasons:1.    SES bundles specific WebLogic, Java, and Oracle DB versions and might need different OS patches at a minimum than PeopleSoft. By having SES run on a different machine, these pre-requisites can be managed better through their lifecycle independenly for PeopleSoft and SES.2.    SES is resource intensive - it runs it's own WebLogic and Oracle database. By having SES run on its own machine, sufficient resources can be allocated to SES and free the PeopleSoft servers from impacts of SES load patterns.We will be providing a comprehensive red paper covering PeopleSoft/SES administration in the near future, but until that is published, we'll post tips on this blog.

• Data Center Modernization: Harness the power of Oracle Exalogic and Exadata with PeopleSoft

  Author: Latha Krishnaswamy, Senior Manager, Exalogic Product Management   Allegis Group - a Hanover, MD-based global staffing company is the largest privately held staffing company in the United States with more than 10,000 internal employees and 90,000 contract employees. Allegis Group is a $6+ billion company, offering a full range of specialized staffing and recruiting solutions to clients in a wide range of industries.   The company processes about 133,000 paychecks per week, every week of the year. With 300 offices around the world and the hefty task of managing HR and payroll, the PeopleSoft system at Allegis  is a mission-critical application. The firm is in the midst of a data center modernization initiative. Part of that project meant moving the company's PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR Modules as well as Custom Time & Expense module) to a converged infrastructure.     The company ran a proof of concept with four different converged architectures before deciding upon Exadata and Exalogic as the platform of choice.   Performance combined with High availability for running mission-critical payroll processes drove this decision.  During the testing on Exadata and Exalogic Allegis applied a particular (11-F) tax update in production environment. What job ran for roughly six hours completed in less than 1.5 hours. • UNESCO, J-ISIS, and the JavaFX 2.2 WebView

Currently, it looks as follows, though note that the menu bar is under development and many menus you see there will be replaced or removed soon: About one aspect of the application, the browser, which you can see above, Jean-Claude Dauphin, its project lead, wrote me the following: The DJ-Native Swing JWebBrowser has been a nice solution for getting a Java Web Browser for most popular platforms. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• Cannot Enter Repro Admin Web Interface at Port 5080

  I have followed the instructions on this website www.rtcquickstart.org to set up my firewall, DNS settings, TLS, and have installed the TURN server and repro proxy as instructed, and have restarted repro. However, I am not able to access the web interface of repro on port 5080, either at localhost:5080 / 127.0.0.1:5080 or at the server's IP address: IPADDRESS:5080 (I have set the server's IP for binding in repro.config). I get the browser error message: 'Unable to connect to server' whenever trying to connect to the web interface via port 5080. I initially had Apache2 installed, which loaded pages correctly at port 80 / address root, and when checked it 'listened' at port 5080 after it was configured in /etc/apache2/ports.conf, however the repro web interface still did not work at port 5080. I have tried uninstalling Apache2 in case that was conflicting with repro's web server, but the problem persists, and testing port 5080 now shows that nothing is 'listening' on port 5080. I have tried reinstalling / purging repro but it has not helped. My router is correctly set to allow all ports; port 5080 is open and forwarding correctly. I can connect to the internet and ping all websites through the server and everything else is working correctly. I would be gateful if anyone could offer advice on how to solve this problem.

• Need help eliminating dead code paths and variables from C source code

  I have a legacy C code on my hands, and I am given the task to filter dead/unused symbols and paths from it. Over the time there were many insertions and deletions, causing lots of unused symbols. I have identified many dead variables which were only being written to once or twice, but were never being read from. Both blackbox/whitebox/regression testing proved that dead code removal did not affected any procedures. (We have a comprehensive test-suite). But this removal was done only on a small part of code. Now I am looking for some way to automate this work. We rely on GCC to do the work. P.S. I'm interested in removing stuff like: variables which are being read just for the sake of reading from them. variables which are spread across multiple source files and only being written to. For example: file1.c: int i; file2.c: extern int i; .... i=x;

• How can I get started using TDD to code some simple functionality?

  I basically have the gist of TDD. I'm sold that it's useful and I've got a reasonable command of the MSTEST framework. However, to date I have not been able to graduate to using it as a primary development method. Mostly, I use it as a surrogate for writing console apps as test drivers (my traditional approach). The most useful thing about it for me is the way it absorbs the role of regression testing. I have not yet built anything yet that specifically isolates various testable behaviors, which is another big part of the picture I know. So this question is to ask for pointers on what the first test(s) I might write for the following development task: I want to produce code that encapsulates task execution in the fashion of producer/consumer. • How to make and restore incremental snapshots of hard disk

  I use Virtual Box a lot for distro / applications testing purposes. One of the features I simply love about it is virtual machines snapshots, its saves a state of a virtual machine and is able to restore it to its former glory if something you did went wrong without any problems and without consuming your all hard disk space. On my live systems I know how to create a 1:1 image of the file system but all the solutions I'v known will create a new image of the complete file system. Are there any programs / file systems that are capable of taking a snapshot of a current file system, save it on another location but instead of making a complete new image it creates incremental backups? To easy describe what I want, it should be as dd images of a file system, but instead of only a full backup it would also create incremental. I am not looking for clonezilla, etc. It should run within the system itself with no (or almost none) intervention from the user, but contain all the data of the file systems. I am also not looking for a duplicity backup your all system excluding some folders script + dd to save your mbr. I can do that myself, looking for extra finesse. I'm looking for something I can do before doing massive changes to a system and then if something when wrong or I burned my hard disk after spilling coffee on it I can just boot from a liveCD and restore a working snapshot to a hard disk. It does not need to be daily, it doesn't even need a schedule. Just run once in a while and let it its job and preferably RAW based not file copy based.

• TDD with SQL and data manipulation functions

  While I'm a professional programmer, I've never been formally trained in software engineering. As I'm frequently visiting here and SO, I've noticed a trend for writing unit tests whenever possible and, as my software gets more complex and sophisticated, I see automated testing as a good idea in aiding debugging. However, most of my work involves writing complex SQL and then processing the output in some way. How would you write a test to ensure your SQL was returning the correct data, for example? Then, say if the data wasn't under your control (e.g., that of a 3rd party system), how can you efficiently test your processing routines without having to hand write reams of dummy data? The best solution I can think of is making views of the data that, together, cover most cases. I can then join those views with my SQL to see if it's returning the correct records and manually process the views to see if my functions, etc. are doing what they're supposed to. Still, it seems excessive and flakey; particularly finding data to test against...

• Screencast not producing files

  I'm using Gnome 3 on 12.04 and trying to create a screencast. I start the screencast using the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R shortcut and the red light appears in the bottom right corner. I go about my business then press the key combination again when done. The problem is that the screencast file gets generated maybe 1 out of 10 times. Is there a log file I can look at to determine the issue? How about a settings file? UPDATE: I did some additional testing. What's happening is that the screencast does work but it appends the new video to the existing file. Even if the file is renamed or moved to trash. Emptying trash does not create a new file either. Not sure where the video gets recorded to then. The only reliable way I've found to have a new file created is to log out of the session and log back in. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to force screencast to create a new file every time Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R is pressed?

• Balancing dependency injection with public API design

  I've been contemplating how to balance testable design using dependency injection with providing simple fixed public API. My dilemma is: people would want to do something like var server = new Server(){ ... } and not have to worry about creating the many dependencies and graph of dependencies that a Server(,,,,,,) may have. While developing, I don't worry too much, as I use an IoC/DI framework to handle all that (I'm not using the lifecycle management aspects of any container, which would complicate things further). Now, the dependencies are unlikely to be re-implemented. Componentisation in this case is almost purely for testability (and decent design!) rather than creating seams for extension, etc. People will 99.999% of the time wish to use a default configuration. So. I could hardcode the dependencies. Don't want to do that, we lose our testing! I could provide a default constructor with hard-coded dependencies and one which takes dependencies. That's... messy, and likely to be confusing, but viable. I could make the dependency receiving constructor internal and make my unit tests a friend assembly (assuming C#), which tidies the public API but leaves a nasty hidden trap lurking for maintenance. Having two constructors which are implicitly connected rather than explicitly would be bad design in general in my book. At the moment that's about the least evil I can think of. Opinions? Wisdom?

• Name for Osherove's modified singleton pattern?

  I'm pretty well sold on the "singletons are evil" line of thought. Nevertheless, there are limited occurrences when you want to limit the creation of an object. Roy Osherove advises, If you're planning to use a singleton in your design, separate the logic of the singleton class and the logic that makes it a singleton (the part that initializes a static variables, for example) into two separate classes. That way, you can keep the single responsibility principle (SRP) and also have a way to override singleton logic. (The Art of Unit Testing 261-262) This pattern still perpetuates the global state. However, it does result in a testable design, so it seems to me to be a good pattern for mitigating the damage of a singleton. However, Osherove does not give a name to this pattern; but naming a pattern, according to the Gang of Four, is important: Naming a pattern immediately increases our design vocabulary. It lets us design at a higher level of abstraction. (3) Is there a standard name for this pattern? It seems different enough from a standard singleton to deserve a separate name. Decoupled Singleton, perhaps?
