  • CloudCruiser Chargeback in the cloud

    - by llaszews
Another company that does chargeback has just been pointed out to me: CloudCruiser There is interesting quote on this company's web site: "Accurate and transparent chargeback is a key requirement in this age of cloud computing. By 2015, we forecast more than 50% of the Global 2000 will charge back most IT costs using service-based pricing, up from less than 10% today. New integrated tools will be needed to implement IT service-based chargeback." - Jay Pultz, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst, Gartner

  • Help yourself . if you like

    - by rachelp
At Red Gate we enjoy talking to our customers. Really! If you've read recent blog posts by members of some of our customer-facing teams, you'll have spotted the pleasure they take in their work. In case you missed those posts, here they are: From our Finance team: Finance: Friends, not foes! From our reception desk: The Front line of Communication However, we recognise that sometimes our customers would like to be able to solve their problems or answer their questions without talking to us - they're in a hurry, it's outside office hours . or perhaps they just prefer not to pick up the phone and call.   Self-service customer care So we've begun a programme of work to enable more self-service; whether it's finding the answer to a "how do i.?" question or getting access to a record of what product licenses they own, we want to make it much easier for our customers to get hold of this information for themselves. If they want to.   Phase 1: make it easier to find information We decided to start by tackling findability. We've got loads of useful information on our website, but it's sometimes difficult to find, so we've been working on improving our site search. Step 1 has been to replace the search engine, clean up the search UI, and make it consistent across the site. We're nearly there! The idea is that if we improve the site search it will be easier - and much more pleasant - for people to find the information they need. The new search will go live some time in April, and then we'll be gathering feedback, looking at web analytics (more about this in an earlier article), and working out what improvements we still need to make. We'd love to hear what you think, so do give your feedback or drop us a line. Or pick up the phone and call, if you like.   What do you think? While I've got your attention, I'd love to hear what people think about self-service customer care. Do you like to call, email, live chat . or do you prefer to dig around and find out answers yourself? Who's getting it right: what self-service sites do you like? p.s. Watch this space for news of phase 2.

  • How to debug Ubuntu/Cisco VPN issues

    - by Joe Casadonte
I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing. When I try to connect, I get this message from libnotify: The VPN connection 'XXX' failed. which is not very helpful. I've scoured the system logs and all I can find is this: Dec 27 12:57:45 jcasadon-lap NetworkManager: <info> Starting VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc'... • NRPE Warning threshold must be a positive integer

    - by Frida
OS: Ubuntu 12.10 Server 64bits I've installed Icinga, with ido2db, pnp4nagios and icinga-web (last release, following the instruction given in the documentation, installation with apt, etc). • Open ports broken from internal network

    - by ksvi
Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP. Note: I know I could just use the internal IP inside of the network to access this service. But if I have a laptop that must be able to do this both from inside and outside it would be annoying to constantly switch between 1.2.3.4 and 192.168.1.100 in the software configuration. • Unusual Apache->Tomcat caching issue.

    - by iftrue
Right now, I have an Apache setup sitting in front of Tomcat to handle caching. This setup has been given to an external service to manage, and since the transition, I've noticed odd behavior. Specifically, when I request a swf file from the web server, I hit the Apache cache (good), but occasionally I'll receive a truncated file. Once I receive this truncated file, the cache will NOT refresh until I manually delete the cache and let the swf pull down from tomcat again. The external service claims that the configuration is fine, but I don't see any way this could be happening aside from improper configuration. Now, there are two apache and two tomcat servers under a load balancer, and occasionally one apache cache will break while another does not (leading to 50% of all requests getting bad, truncated data). Where should I start looking to debug this issue? What could POSSIBLY be causing this odd behavior? Edit: Inspecting the logs, tomcat throws this: java.io.IOException: Bad file number at java.io.FileInputStream.readBytes(Native Method) at java.io.FileInputStream.read(FileInputStream.java:199) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read1(BufferedInputStream.java:256) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read(BufferedInputStream.java:317) at java.io.FilterInputStream.read(FilterInputStream.java:90) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.copyRange(DefaultServlet.java:1968) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.copy(DefaultServlet.java:1714) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.serveResource(DefaultServlet.java:809) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.doGet(DefaultServlet.java:325) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:690) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:803) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.internalDoFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:290) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.doFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:206) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve.invoke(StandardWrapperValve.java:233) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContextValve.invoke(StandardContextValve.java:175) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHostValve.invoke(StandardHostValve.java:128) at org.apache.catalina.valves.ErrorReportValve.invoke(ErrorReportValve.java:102) at org.apache.catalina.valves.AccessLogValve.invoke(AccessLogValve.java:568) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardEngineValve.invoke(StandardEngineValve.java:109) at org.apache.catalina.ha.session.JvmRouteBinderValve.invoke(JvmRouteBinderValve.java:209) at org.apache.catalina.ha.tcp.ReplicationValve.invoke(ReplicationValve.java:347) at org.terracotta.modules.tomcat.tomcat_5_5.SessionValve55.invoke(SessionValve55.java:57) at org.apache.catalina.connector.CoyoteAdapter.service(CoyoteAdapter.java:286) at org.apache.jk.server.JkCoyoteHandler.invoke(JkCoyoteHandler.java:190) at org.apache.jk.common.HandlerRequest.invoke(HandlerRequest.java:283) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.invoke(ChannelSocket.java:767) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.processConnection(ChannelSocket.java:697) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket$SocketConnection.runIt(ChannelSocket.java:889) at org.apache.tomcat.util.threads.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run(ThreadPool.java:690) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) followed by access_log.2009-12-14.txt:1.2.3.4 - - [14/Dec/2009:00:27:32 -0500] "GET /myApp/mySwf.swf HTTP/1.1" 304 - access_log.2009-12-14.txt:1.2.3.4 - - [14/Dec/2009:01:27:33 -0500] "GET /myApp/mySwf.swf HTTP/1.1" 304 - access_log.2009-12-14.txt:1.2.3.4 - - [14/Dec/2009:01:39:53 -0500] "GET /myApp/mySwf.swf HTTP/1.1" 304 - access_log.2009-12-14.txt:1.2.3.4 - - [14/Dec/2009:02:27:38 -0500] "GET /myApp/mySwf.swf HTTP/1.1" 304 - So apache is caching the bad file size. What could possibly be causing this, and possibly separate, how do I ensure that this exception does not get written to cache?

  • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    - by Gravitas
Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows. Discovered that you can generate an error log if the service doesn't start - see here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/error-log.html

  • DJBDNS DNSCache configuration, svscan won't start

    - by SecurityGate
I've been wracking my brain the last few days trying to setup DJBDNS on my server. I haven't been having too much luck. I have been following the guide provided by the creator of DJBDNS: http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/run-server.html Here is a run-through of where I am: Both services are up: [root@Happycat tinydns]$ svstat /service/tinydns/ /service/tinydns/: up (pid 18224) 74454 seconds [root@Happycat tinydns]$ svstat /service/dnscache/ /service/dnscache/: up (pid 2733) 2184 seconds My /etc/resolv.conf file: nameserver 127.0.0.1 My $PATH: [root@Happycat ~]$ echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/var/qmail/bin/:/usr/nexkit/bin:/root/bin My tinydns/root/data records: ..:69.160.56.65:a:259200 .ns1.benwilk.com:69.160.56.65:a:259200 .ns2.benwilk.com:69.160.56.65:a:259200 .56.160.69.in-addr.arpa:69.160.56.65:a:259200 .56.160.69.in-addr.arpa:69.160.56.65:b:259200 =benwilk.com:69.160.56.65:86400 =openbarrel.net:69.160.56.65:86400 +www.openbarrel.net:69.160.56.65:86400 +www.benwilk.com:69.160.56.65:86400 Tiny dns can recognize the records set: [root@Happycat root]$ tinydns-get a benwilk.com 1 benwilk.com: 78 bytes, 1+1+1+1 records, response, authoritative, noerror query: 1 benwilk.com answer: benwilk.com 86400 A 69.160.56.65 authority: . 259200 NS a.ns additional: a.ns 259200 A 69.160.56.65 But then it comes to a grinding halt: svscan /service/tinydns/ supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to acquire log/supervise/lock: temporary failure supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to acquire log/supervise/lock: temporary failure supervise: fatal: unable to start env/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start supervise/run: file does not exist supervise: fatal: unable to start root/run: file does not exist I'm assuming I have to set something with DNScache, and to be honest, it gets a bit confusing. I'm not sure whether to set it's IP address to 127.0.0.1 or one of the other IP addresses on the system. What am I missing from here?

  • http://localhost/ always gives 502 unknown host

    - by Nitesh Panchal
My service for World Wide Web Publishing Service started successfully but whenever I browse to http://localhost/ I always get 502 Unknown host. Also, wampapache is installed side by side but when I stop IIS service and start wampapache from services.msc I get error and when I view it in System event log I get this error: - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Service Control Manager" Guid="{555908d1-a6d7-4695-8e1e-26931d2012f4}" EventSourceName="Service Control Manager" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">7024</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x8080000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2011-06-12T17:43:28.223498400Z" /> <EventRecordID>346799</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="456" ThreadID="3936" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>MACHINENAME</Computer> <Security /> </System> - <EventData> <Data Name="param1">wampapache</Data> <Data Name="param2">%%1</Data> </EventData> </Event> I am fed up of this error and it is driving me nuts. I feel like banging my head against the laptop. I am really serious. Without concentrating on my real application I am trying to solve this issue since 3 hours. I google various threads and few of them said that there could be issue of Reporting Services or Skype. But I have uninstalled Skype and Reporting Services are disabled. What more should I do? I have hosts file present in etc directory and it does have mapping for localhost to 127.0.0.1. What more could I do?

  • Network Services disabled (not starting) on Windows XP

    - by Rickesh John
I am currently running Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my system. But today, when I failed to connect to the internet, via a LAN cable, I realized that almost all of the vital network services had stopped functioning. Any attempts to start it through services.msc gives me the following message: Could not start the DNS Client Service on Local Computer Error 1068: The dependency service group failed to start All my software or services that are related to networking have stopped functioning, for example, Windows Firewall is turned off permanently, so is my Avast Anti-Virus' service of Real Time Shields and Web Shield. When I insert the LAN wire into my laptop, it registers itself, but this is what I get when I do a ping localhost C:>ping localhost Unable to contact IP driver, error code 2 Moveover, with ipconfig I get this : Windows IP Configuration An internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional Information: Unable to query host name On some further poking around, I saw that none of the "NETWORK SERVICE" process in task manager, except svchost.exe were running. Also, when I first opened the task manager, I saw some 20 processes running with username column empty for most of them. With some search in Google, I found out that these services were important, DHCP DNS Net logon Network connection Network location Awareness TCP/IP Net BIOS Helper none of them, except Network Connections are working, they do not start. The event viewer of my system shows a bunch of 7000 and 7001 event errors. I have tried re installing the network driver, booting in safe mode with networking and tried to enable those services mentioned above. I had disabled System Restore some time back, so I have no restore points for my system. I tried a lot of things from Google searches but none of them worked. Also, with such a long list of issue, I am a little confused as to what should I search on the internet. :( One more thing I would like to mention, previous morning, my anti-virus Avast detected a RootKit buried deep in my system folders. It was removed, but maybe this was a problem caused by the root kit. I did run a boot-time scan but no viruses were found. Please please please advice. Is formatting and re-installation of Windows my only option?

  • Mysql query help - Alter this mysql query to get these results?

    - by sandeepan-nath
Please execute the following queries first to set up so that you can help me:- CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Tutor_Details` ( `id_tutor` int(10) NOT NULL auto_increment, `firstname` varchar(100) NOT NULL default '', `surname` varchar(155) NOT NULL default '', PRIMARY KEY (`id_tutor`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=41 ; INSERT INTO `Tutor_Details` (`id_tutor`,`firstname`, `surname`) VALUES (1, 'Sandeepan', 'Nath'), (2, 'Bob', 'Cratchit'); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Classes` ( `id_class` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `id_tutor` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL default '0', `class_name` varchar(255) default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id_class`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=229 ; INSERT INTO `Classes` (`id_class`,`class_name`, `id_tutor`) VALUES (1, 'My Class', 1), (2, 'Sandeepan Class', 2); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Tags` ( `id_tag` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `tag` varchar(255) default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id_tag`), UNIQUE KEY `tag` (`tag`), KEY `id_tag` (`id_tag`), KEY `tag_2` (`tag`), KEY `tag_3` (`tag`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=18 ; INSERT INTO `Tags` (`id_tag`, `tag`) VALUES (1, 'Bob'), (6, 'Class'), (2, 'Cratchit'), (4, 'Nath'), (3, 'Sandeepan'), (5, 'My'); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Tutors_Tag_Relations` ( `id_tag` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL default '0', `id_tutor` int(10) default NULL, KEY `Tutors_Tag_Relations` (`id_tag`), KEY `id_tutor` (`id_tutor`), KEY `id_tag` (`id_tag`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1; INSERT INTO `Tutors_Tag_Relations` (`id_tag`, `id_tutor`) VALUES (3, 1), (4, 1), (1, 2), (2, 2); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Class_Tag_Relations` ( `id_tag` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL default '0', `id_class` int(10) default NULL, `id_tutor` int(10) NOT NULL, KEY `Class_Tag_Relations` (`id_tag`), KEY `id_class` (`id_class`), KEY `id_tag` (`id_tag`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1; INSERT INTO `Class_Tag_Relations` (`id_tag`, `id_class`, `id_tutor`) VALUES (5, 1, 1), (6, 1, 1), (3, 2, 2), (6, 2, 2); In the present system data which I have given , tutor named "Sandeepan Nath" has has created class named "My Class" and tutor named "Bob Cratchit" has created class named "Sandeepan Class". Requirement - To execute a single query with limit on the results to show search results as per AND logic on the search keywords like this:- If "Sandeepan Class" is searched , Tutor Sandeepan Nath's record from Tutor Details table is returned(because "Sandeepan" is the firstname of Sandeepan Nath and Class is present in class name of Sandeepan's class) If "Class" is searched Both the tutors from the Tutor_details table are fetched because Class is present in the name of the class created by both the tutors. Following is what I have so far achieved (PHP Mysql):- <?php $searchTerm1 = "Sandeepan"; $searchTerm2 = "Class"; mysql_select_db("test"); $sql = "SELECT td.* FROM Tutor_Details AS td LEFT JOIN Tutors_Tag_Relations AS ttagrels ON td.id_tutor = ttagrels.id_tutor LEFT JOIN Classes AS wc ON td.id_tutor = wc.id_tutor LEFT JOIN Class_Tag_Relations AS wtagrels ON td.id_tutor = wtagrels.id_tutor LEFT JOIN Tags as t1 on ((t1.id_tag = ttagrels.id_tag) OR (t1.id_tag = wtagrels.id_tag)) LEFT JOIN Tags as t2 on ((t2.id_tag = ttagrels.id_tag) OR (t2.id_tag = wtagrels.id_tag)) where t1.tag LIKE '%".$searchTerm1."%' AND t2.tag LIKE '%".$searchTerm2."%' GROUP BY td.id_tutor LIMIT 10 "; $result = mysql_query($sql); echo $sql; if($result) { while($rec = mysql_fetch_object($result)) $recs[] = $rec; //$rec = mysql_fetch_object($result); echo "<br><br>"; if(is_array($recs)) { foreach($recs as $each) { print_r($each); echo "<br>"; } } } ?> But the results are :- If "Sandeepan Nath" is searched, it does not return any tutor (instead of only Sandeepan's row) If "Sandeepan Class" is searched, it returns Sandeepan's row (instead of Both tutors ) If "Bob Class" is searched, it correctly returns Bob's row If "Bob Cratchit" is searched, it does not return any tutor (instead of only
