  Here is the few links on which andre had demonstrateddifferences-of-handling-jboexception-in handling-exceptions-in-oracle-ui-shell However in this post we can see how to display exception in popup being in the same page. I use similar usecase as andre however we'll not be using Exception Handling property from taskflow, instead we use popup and invoke the same programmatically. This is a dynamic region example where user can select jobs or locations links to edit the records of corresponding tables being in the same page and click commit to save changes. To generate exception we deliberately change commit to CommitAction in commit action binding code created in the bean (same as andre) and catch the exception and add brief description of exception into #{pageFlowScope.message}. • What’s new in SQL Prompt 6.3?

  This post describes some of the improvements we’ve made in the latest version of SQL Prompt. Code suggestions In recent months, the focus of the SQL Prompt development team has been to remove annoyances and improve code suggestions. Here’s just a few of the improvements to code suggestions we’ve made in SQL Prompt 6.3: The suggestions box is no longer shown when there are no suggestions Suggestions are now shown if you continue to type a half-completed word More suggestions for new SQL Server 2014 syntax Improvements to partial match suggestions Improved suggestion ordering As well as improving suggestions, we’ve also added some new features. Select in Object Explorer You can now use SQL Prompt to select an object in the Object Explorer from a query window. This is useful because many SSMS features are available from an object’s Object Explorer context menu (eg select top 1000 rows, design, script as). To select an object in the Object Explorer, place the cursor over the object you want to select and press Ctrl + F12: Here’s a short video of the feature in action. $SELECTIONSTART$ and $SELECTIONEND$ placeholders You can now use $SELECTIONSTART$ and $SELECTIONEND$ placeholders in your snippet code. The code between these placeholders is selected when you insert the snippet. • Getting Started with ASP.NET MVC 3 and Razor

  I had a chance to give a talk on ASP.NET MVC 3, Razor and jQuery today at a company and wanted to post the slides and demos from the talk. The focus was on getting started with ASP.NET MVC 3 projects and .cshtml files including creating pages using the new Razor syntax (which I personally love….never going back to the Web Forms View Engine) as well as working with jQuery.   When Ubuntu was using gnome I was able to create a popup banner like the banner below before the login screen using zenity in the /etc/gdm/Init/Default. • Open Multiple Sites Without Reopening the Menus in Firefox

  Are you frustrated with having to reopen your menus for each website that you need or want to view? Now you can keep those menus open while opening multiple websites with the Stay-Open Menu extension for Firefox. Stay-Open Menu in Action You can start using the extension as soon as you have installed it…simply access your favorite links in the “Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Awesome Bar, or History Menu” and middle click on the appropriate entries. Here you can see our browser opening the Productive Geek website and that the “Bookmarks Menu” is still open. As soon as you left click on a link or click outside the menus they will close normally like before. Note: Middle clicked links open in new tabs. The only time during our tests that a newly opened link “remained in the background” was for any links opened from the “Awesome Bar”. But as soon as the “Awesome Bar” was closed the new tabs automatically focused to the front. A link being opened from the “History Menu”…still open while the webpage is loading. Options The options are simple to sort through…enable or disable the additional “stay open” functions and enable automatic menu closing if desired. Conclusion If you get frustrated with having to reopen menus to access multiple webpages at one time then you might want to give this extension a try.   What does people normally use to stress test their GPU on ubuntu 12.04? I tried installing Phoronix Benchmark suite ubuntu .deb but it tries to install freeglu3-dev and at the same time complains about $ phoronix-test-suite benchmark pts/opencl The following dependencies are needed and will be installed: freeglut3-dev This process may take several minutes. Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... Reading state information... freeglut3-dev is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 90 not upgraded. There are dependencies still missing from the system: - OpenGL Utility Kit / GLUT 1: Ignore missing dependencies and proceed with installation. 2: Skip installing the tests with missing dependencies. 3: Re-attempt to install the missing dependencies. 4: Quit the current Phoronix Test Suite process. Missing dependencies action: 4 so even if it is installing freeglu3, it still complains about missing GLUT. You can't win against GLUT it seems So, what does people use for this? i mean, really, because i have tried googling for an hour and it is not paying up Thanks!

• Read-only file system

  The title might not be as descriptive as I would like it to be but couldn't come up with a better one. My server's file system went into Read-only. And I don't understand why it does so and how to solve it. I can SSH into the server and when trying to start apache2 for example I get the following : username@srv1:~$ sudo service apache2 start [sudo] password for username: sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/username/1: Read-only file system * Starting web server apache2 (30)Read-only file system: apache2: could not open error log file /var/log/apache2/error.log. Unable to open logs Action 'start' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. When I try restarting the server I get : username@srv1:~$ sudo shutdown -r now [sudo] password for username: sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/username/1: Read-only file system Once I restart it manually it just start up without any warning or message saying something is wrong. I hope somebody could point me into the right direction to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance!

• ASP 3.0 Folder/File Permissions Settings (ASP Classic)

  Dear Stack Exchange, Hi, I have built a form input page in HTML that has an action to post to an ASP handler/processor .asp file. The form handler/processor .asp file contains only <% Insert VBScript Here % and no HTML output whatsoever. The .asp file was never intended to be a "web viewable" .asp file like an .asp home page file or html file would. It's supposed to be for my eyes only- not the public's however it does need to take info posted by the public and do something with it on it's end. I have used VBScript/ASP3.0 to build the form handler/processor file and would like to know how to keep someone from viewing the actual VBScript in the handler/processor .asp file. I am aware of obfuscation but I would like to know how to keep prying eyes from even being able to take a look at the obfuscated code in the handler/processor file. I realize that the server executes the .asp file first before outputting anything to the browser so I guess that my main concern is mostly that someone may could "download" the form handler/processor .asp file, then view it's contents on their machine. Assuming the form handler .asp file is where it is, behind the root, and is on a windows server (no htaccess approach) how could one protect it so that it could never be viewed or simply pulled down via anonymous ftp or something like that? Is there something like "script only" permissions that the system administrator could set up for a particular folder? Remember, with shared hosting I can't go above the root. If so, would the form still be able to post? How would any of you guys go about protecting the asp file in addition to obfuscation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ASP Pee-Wee

• Special thanks to everyone that helped me in 2010.

  2010 has been a very good year for me and I wanted to create a list and thank everyone for what they have done for me.  I also wanted to thank everyone for reading and subscribing to my blog. It is hard to believe that people actually want to read what I write. I feel like I owe a huge thanks to everyone listed below. Looking back upon 2010, I feel that I’ve grown as a developer and you are part of that reason. Sometimes we get caught up in day to day work and forget to give thanks to those that helped us along the way. The list below is mine, it includes people and companies. This list is obviously not going to include everyone that has helped, just those that have stood out in my mind. When I think back upon 2010, their names keep popping up in my head. So here goes, in no particular order.  People Dave Campbell – For everything he has done for the Silverlight Community with his Silverlight Cream blog. I can’t think of a better person to get recognition at the Silverlight FireStarter event. I also wanted to thank him for spending several hours of his time helping me track down a bug in my feedburner account. Victor Gaudioso – For his large collection of video tutorials on his blog and the passion and enthusiasm he has for Silverlight. We have talked on the phone and I’ve never met anyone so fired up for Silverlight. Kunal Chowdhury – Kunal has always been available for me to bounce ideas off of. Kunal has also answered a lot of questions that stumped me. His blog and CodeProject article have green a great help to me and the Silverlight Community. Glen Gordon – I was looking frantically for a Windows Phone 7 several months before release and Glen found one for me. This allowed me to start a blog series on the Windows Phone 7 hardware and developing an application from start to finish that Scott Guthrie retweeted.  Jeff Blankenburg – For listening to my complaints in the early stages of Windows Phone 7. Jeff was always very polite and gave me his cell phone number to talk it over. He also walked me through several problems that I was having early on. Pete Brown – For writing Silverlight 4 in Action. This book is definitely a labor of love. I followed Pete on Twitter as he was writing it and he spent a lot of late nights and weekends working on it. I felt a lot smarter after reading it the first time. The second time was even better. John Papa – For all of his work on the Silverlight Firestarter and the Silverlight community in general. He has also helped me on a personal level with several things. Daniel Heisler – For putting up with me the past year while we worked on many .NET projects together in 2010. Alvin Ashcraft – For publishing a daily blog post on the best of .NET links. He has linked to my site many times and I really appreciate what he does for the community. Chris Alcock – For publishing the Morning Brew every weekday. I remember when I first appeared on his site, I started getting hundreds of hits on my site and wondered if I was getting a DOS attack or something. It was great to find out that Chris had linked to one of my articles. Joel Cochran – For spending a week teaching “Blend-O-Rama”. This was my one of my favorite sessions of this year. I learned a lot about Expression Blend from it and the best part was that it was free and during lunchtime. Jeremy Likness – Jeremy is smart – very smart. I have learned a lot from Jeremy over the past year. He is also involved in the Silverlight community in every way possible, from forums to blog post to screencast to open source. It goes on and on. The people that I met at VSLive Orlando 2010. I had a great time chatting with Walt Ritscher, Wallace McClure, Tim Huckabee and David Platt. Also a special thanks to all of my friends on Twitter like @wilhil, @DBVaughan, @DataArtist, @wbm, @DirkStrauss and @rsringeri and many many more. Software Companies / Events / May of gave me FREE stuff. =) Microsoft (3) – I was sent a free coupon code by Microsoft to take the Silverlight 4 Beta Exam. I jumped on the offer and took the exam. It was great being selected to try out the exam before it goes public even though Microsoft eventually published a universal coupon code for everyone. I am still waiting to find out if I passed the exam. My fingers are crossed. Microsoft reaching out to me with some questions regarding the .NET Community. I’ve never had a company contact me with such interest in the community. Having a contest where 75 people could win a $100 gift certificate and a T-Shirt for submitting a Windows Phone 7 app. I submitted my app and won. All of the free launch events this year (Windows Phone 7, Visual Studio 2010, ASP.NET MVC). Wintellect – For providing an awesome day of free technical training called T.E.N. Where else can you get free training from some of the best programmers in the world? I also won a contest from them that included a NETAdvantage Ultimate License from Infragistics. VSLive – I attended the Orlando 2010 Conference and it was the best developer’s conference that I have ever attended. I got to know a lot of people at this conference and hang out with many wonderful speakers. I live tweeted the event and while it may have annoyed some, the organizers of VSLive loved it. I won the contest on Twitter and they invited me back to the 2011 session of my choice. This is a very nice gift and I really appreciate the generosity. BarcodeLib.com – For providing free barcode generating tools for a Non-Profit ASP.NET project that I was working on. Their third party controls really made this a breeze compared to my existing solution. NDepend – It is absolutely the best tool to improve code quality. The product is extremely large and I would recommend heading over to their site to check it out. Silverlight Spy – I was writing a blog post on Silverlight Spy and Koen Zwikstra provided a FREE license to me. If you ever wanted to peek inside of a Silverlight Application then this is the tool for you. He is also working on a version that will support OOB and Windows Phone 7. I would recommend checking out his site. Birmingham .NET Users Group / Silverlight Nights User Group – It takes a lot of time to put together a user group meeting every month yet it always seems to happen. I don’t want to name names for fear of leaving someone out but both of these User Groups are excellent if you live in the Birmingham, Alabama area. Publishing Companies Manning Publishing – For giving me early access to Silverlight 4 in Action by Pete Brown. It was really nice to be able to read this awesome book while Pete was writing it. I was also one of the first people to publish a review of the book. Sams Publishing and DZone – For providing a copy of Silverlight 4 Unleashed by Laurent Bugnion for me to review for their site. The review is coming in January 2011. Special Shoutout to the following 3rd Party Silverlight Controls It has been a great pleasure to work with the following companies on 3rd Party Control Giveaways every month. • Upgrading from 2005 to R2

  We're about to take the plunge and upgrade our servers from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2. Real world accounts of people upgrading to R2 are a bit hard to find so I thought it might be useful to blog what happens. (I don't count marketing 'case studies' that just say stuff like "The process was effortless and the upgrade will pay for itself by the end the week.") We're using the database engine, Analysis Services and Reporting Services so upgrading by a major version number was looking a bit daunting. I wasn't expecting much trouble on the engine side of things but, as most of the action in 2008 and R2 appears to have been on the Reporting and BI front, I expected to have quite a bit of work to do. But our testing so far has been one nice surprise after another: The 2005 backups restore cleanly onto R2. R2's BI Studio upgraded the Reporting and Analysis Services solutions without any issues. The cubes all deployed and processed just fine. R2 BI Studio interacts fine with TFS 2008 version control. I'll blog some more as things develop.

• SQL SERVER – Attach or Detach Database – SQL in Sixty Seconds #068

  When we have to move a database from one server to another server or when we have to move a database from one file to another file, we commonly use Database Attach or Detach process. I have been doing this for quite a while as well. Recently, when I was visiting an organization I found that in this organization lots of developers are still using an older version of the code to attach the database. I quickly pointed that out to them the new method to attach the database, however it was really interesting to find out that they really did not know that sp_attach_db is now a deprecated method to attach the database. This really made me to do today’s SQL in Sixty Seconds. I demonstrate in this SQL in Sixty Seconds how to attach or detach the database using a new method of attaching database. • Manipulating Human Tasks (for testing) by Mark Nelson

  A few months ago, while working on a BPM migration, I had the need to look at the status of human tasks, and to manipulate them – essentially to just have a single user take random actions on them at some interval, to help drive a set of processes that were being tested. To do this, I wrote a little utility called httool.  It reuses some of the core domain classes from my custom worklist sample (with minimal changes to make it a remote client instead of a local one). I have not got around to documenting it yet, but it is pretty simple and fairly self explanatory.  So I thought I would go ahead and share it with folks, in case anyone is interested in playing with it. You can get the code from my ci-samples repository on java.net: git clone git://java.net/ci4fmw~ci-samples It is in the httool directory. I do plan to get back to this “one day” and enhance it to be more intelligent – target particular task types, update the payload, follow a set of “rules” about what action to take – so that I can use it for more driving more interesting test scenarios.  If anyone is feeling generous with their time, and interested, please feel free to join the java.net project and hack away to your heart’s content. • Log shipping and shrinking transaction logs

  I just solved a problem that had me worried for a bit. I'm log shipping from three primary servers to a single secondary server, and the transaction log disk on the secondary server was getting very full. I established that several primary databases had unused space that resulted from big, one-off updates so I could shrink their logs. But would this action be log shipped and applied to the secondary database too? I thought probably not. And, more importantly, would it break log shipping? My secondary databases are in a Standby / Read Only state so I didn't think I could shrink their logs. I RTFMd, Googled, and asked on a Q&A site (not the evil one) but was none the wiser. So I was facing a monumental round of shrink, full backup, full secondary restore and re-start log shipping (which would leave us without a disaster recovery facility for the duration). Then I thought it might be worthwhile to take a non-essential database and just make absolutely sure a log shrink on the primary wouldn't ship over and occur on the secondary as well. So I did a DBCC SHRINKFILE and kept an eye on the secondary. Bingo! Log shipping didn't blink and the log on the secondary shrank too. I just love it when something turns out even better than I dared to hope. (And I guess this highlights something I need to learn about what activities are logged.)

• My old Conchango blog posts are currently not accessible

  Some of you reading this may be aware that I used to blog at http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson. That URL later changed to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson after Conchango (my employer) got taken over by EMC. In my last post on that site: I stated that I had 676 blog posts on that site. Unfortunately, as of today, those 676 posts are inaccessible. If you try to get to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson today you will see this: I am not the only one affected either; it seems that EMC have taken the same action for many blog sites of my old colleagues (e.g. http://consultingblogs.emc.com/merrickchaffer is also inaccessible). Early indications are that EMC have removed all blog posts by any former employees although that is yet to be confirmed.   A few of us former employees are endeavouring to get this situation rectified so watch this space. I am aware that many people in the SSIS community still refer to those old blog posts so please be aware that any attempt to access any of them will be futile for the foreseeable future. @Jamiet UPDATE: Looks like I managed to get through to the right person. its back http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson/

• New version of SQL Server Data Tools is now available

  If you don’t follow the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) blog then you may not know that two days ago an updated version of SSDT was released (and by SSDT I mean the database projects, not the SSIS/SSRS/SSAS stuff) along with a new version of the SSDT Power Tools. This release incorporates a an updated version of the SQL Server Data Tier Application Framework (aka DAC Framework, aka DacFX) which you can read about on Adam Mahood’s blog post SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (September 2012) Available. DacFX is essentially all the gubbins that you need to extract and publish .dacpacs and according to Adam’s post it incorporates a new feature that I think is very interesting indeed: Extract DACPAC with data – Creates a database snapshot file (.dacpac) from a live SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database that contains data from user tables in addition to the database schema. These packages can be published to a new or existing SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database using the SqlPackage.exe Publish action. Data contained in package replaces the existing data in the target database. In short, .dacpacs can now include data as well as schema. I’m very excited about this because one of my long-standing complaints about SSDT (and its many forebears) is that whilst it has great support for declarative development of schema it does not provide anything similar for data – if you want to deploy data from your SSDT projects then you have to write Post-Deployment MERGE scripts. This new feature for .dacpacs does not change that situation yet however it is a very important pre-requisite so I am hoping that a feature to provide declaration of data (in addition to declaration of schema which we have today) is going to light up in SSDT in the not too distant future. • Observable Collections

  I didn't think it was possible, but .NET surprised me yet again with a cool feature I never knew existed: The ObservableCollection. This became available in .NET 3.0. In essence, an ObservableCollection is a collection with an event you can connect to. The event fires when the collection changes. As usual, working with the .NET classes is so ridiculously easy, it feels like cheating. The following is small test program to illustrate how the ObservableCollection works. To start, create an ObservableCollection and then store it in the Session object so it will persist between page post backs. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe What does that mean to Asp.Net developers? Then I did: sudo visudo and added this row: myusername ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /home/scriptname rebooted and... Multitouch works but wifi not. When I manually launch the script it asks for sudo password so I thought it was because of modprobe and insmod commands and I've added those commands to sudo visudo. Nothing. What am I doing wrong?

• Some SharePoint NDA Information

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Many years ago, at the last to last to last MVP summit, Microsoft was kind enough to share with us what they were thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead! I specially remember John Durant talking about the specific enhancements planned for SharePoint 2010 development experience. If you haven’t seen John Durant talking on stage, the guy has more enthusiasm than tiger woods in Amsterdam! The energy of his presentations is simply amazing. So, I pulled out my phone, and I snapped a picture! And, I emailed that picture to everyone in the MVP land, and Microsoft land, saying “We have evidence”, i.e. here are the promises that were made, and dammit we’ll see by the time you release SP2010 how many of these do you actually release. Here is the picture ladies and gentlemen -     It’s a good karate chop action shot isn’t it? Of course, we were all immediately warned not to share any of this seriously strictly NDA information at the time. Well, now that the information is out in the world, I can finally share now, this small tidbit of how far ahead Microsoft is thinking in their plans. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised, if today that they have a very clear idea what SharePoint vNext will be all about, or should I say vNextvNext? Have fun! Comment on the article ....
