• Minimizing calls to database in rails

  Hi guys, i am familiar with memcached and eager loading, but neither seems to solve the problem i am facing. My main performance lag comes from hundreds of data retrieval calls from the database. The tricky thing is that I do not know which set of users i need to retrieve until i have several steps of computation. I can refactor my code, but i was wondering how you experts handle this situation? I think it should be a fairly common situation def newsfeed - find out which users i need - retrieve those users via DB - find out which events happened for these users - for each of those events - retrieve new set of users - find out which groups are relevant - for each of those groups - retrieve new set of users - etc, etc end

• What should I put in the href when I prototype?

  When protyping we often do empty anchors. A very common way to do this is to do something like: <a href="#">Go here</a> But if the client clicks this link, the page will scroll to the top. But if we leave out the href attribute, the link won't behave like a link. I've see stuff like: <a href="javascript;">Go here</a> But it doesn't look right. Any other ideas?

  I put this into a qmake file: QTPLUGIN += component LIBS += -L../lib -lmodule -lcomponent -lnetworking But qmake reorders the libraries behind my back: g++ -m64 -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--as-needed,-z,relro -o testb .obj/constants.o .obj/main.o .obj/qrc_application.o -L/usr/lib -L../lib -lmodule -lnetworking -lcomponent -lQtGui -lQtNetwork -lQtCore -lpthread Probably because component is a static plugin. But it has a static dependency on the networking library and hence the reordering causes a link error. It is a static dependency and hence is ok in my opinion. How to work around this? I'm using qt 4.8.1.

• Cross platform, Interactive text-based interface with command completion

  Does anyone know of a C++ library that will provide a text-based interactive interface? I want to create two versions of an application; a console based program that will perform whatever actions are given on the command line or interactively at the console as well as a GUI based program (Mac Cocoa and Windows MFC). Both versions will share a common C++ backend. For the console based program I would like similar history abilities to readline (which I cannot use as this application will be closed source) with command completion (Tab-activated for example). Perhaps there is something like this already available?

• PHP/MySQL - an array filter for bots

  Hello, I'm making a hit counter. I have a database and I store the IP and $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; of the visitors. Now I need to add a filter, so I can put away the hits, that are made by bots. I found out, that many bots usually keep some common words in the $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; , so I's like to make and array of words, that would keep the bot from displaying in the results. Here is what I have now: while($row = mysql_fetch_array($yesterday, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { <-- Here I need a code, that would run through an array and check, if it containts the keywords and if it doesn't ... just count++; -- } Also if you know any other way of detecting and removing the bots from the results, I'd be verry thankful.   Hello, I have a mysql table. It has auto increment on the id. but I regularly delete rows so the numbers are all over the place. I need to get the last n rows out, but because of deletions, the common way of using the max of the autoincremented id column doesn't work well... 1 - Is their another way to get the bottom 50? 2 - Is their a way to get rows by actual row number? so if I have 4 rows labelled 1,2,3,4 delete row 2 then it will become 1,2,3 rather than 1,3,4?

• Is there a way to embed an mp3 player in a website that isn't flash based (so that the website is iP

  I did a lot of searching for what I thought would be a pretty common question, but I came up with nothing. If there is another thread with a similar topic, please let me know. Basically, I'm looking for a way to have an .mp3 file play in a website without relying on a flash-based player. I've searched w3 schools and every forum I can think of, but every media player I've found so far has been some sort of proprietary flash player. Doesn't HTML support some sort of native player? I've found some that rely on Windows Media Player which is close, but I want the player to work on an iPhone and something tells me WMP won't get that done... PS, as I'm thinking more about this this idea just popped into my head: a javascipt player and inside the <noscript> tag, put a flash player? I'm running a music blog (@ http://www.freshoncampus.com) so the less code per post, the better...

  It is a common pattern I see where the error codes associated with an exception are stored as Static final ints. when the exception is created to be thrown, it is constructed with one of these codes along with an error message. This results in the method that is going to catch it having to look at the code and then decide on a course of action. The alternative seems to be- declare a class for EVERY exception error case Is there a middle ground ? what is the recommended method ?

• Continue Drupal processing after page send.

  I need to do some additional processing after a Drupal page has been sent. I know I could fire a background shell command, but I need the current Drupal execution context to be maintained. I've spent a lot of time looking, but I can't find any documentation in this regard. This is surprising because it must surely be a common requirement. The only real idea I have is to fire up Drupal (again) via a shell command (exec, etc) and supply it with a pseudo path which would invoke the continued processing. But this seems unnecessarily complex/wasteful. Any pointers greatly appreciated, tks.

  Hi, I have seen many regular expressions for Url validation. In my case I want the Url to be simpler, so the regex should be tighter: Valid Url prefixes look like: http[s]://[www.]addressOrIp[.something]/PageName.aspx[?] This describe a prefix. I will be appending ?x=a&y=b&z=c later. I just want to check if the web page is live before accessing it, but even before that I want to make sure that it is properly configured. I want to treat bad url and host is down conditions differently, although when in doubt, I'd rather give a host is down message, because that is an ultimate test anyway. Hopefully that makes sense. I guess what I am trying to say - the regex does not need be too aggressive, I just want it to cover say 95% of the cases. This is C# - centric, so Perl regex extensions are not helpful to me; let's stick to the lowest common denominator. Thanks!

• Is it possible to deploy a Ruby app on a plain clean Passenger setup?

  I'm thinking to something really similar on what you can do with mod_php: drop an application in some way inside Apache and making it run with Passenger, without adding anything inside httpd.conf (no vhost, nothing except the basic Passenger configuration). It's something very similar to Wordpress or many other frameworks: just unzip/svn checkout it inside a folder and run it. I know that it's possible with CGI and FCGI, but I'm wondering if it's also possible to tap in the speed of Passenger. I've tried fiddling with the Rack instructions on the official website trying to find a specific .htaccess and config.ru configuration, but nothing so far. I know it's not common, but... is it even possible?

  I'm trying to accomplish the following ridiculous task: I have a text file containing a set of fully qualified filesnames. I want to iterate through the file and append each line to a common variable, that can be passed to a command line tool. For example, the file might be: C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text3.txt and I'd like to assign them to some variable 'a' such that: a = "C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text2.txt" A secondary question is - what is a good batch file reference? I'm finding some stuff in the Windows material, and a lot of home-grown websites, but nothing particularly complete. Thanks!

• Controlled hyperlink hijaxing

  I am working on a web application. I have a data grid with a 'commands' column that has hyperlinks for some common CRUD operations (Edit, Delete, etc). When a user clicks on say the Edit hyperlink, I retrieve the unique identifier for the data grid row and load a modal form dialog (i am using jQuery UI) so the user is able to edit the row data and subsequently close the modal form dialog at which point I refresh the page. Now, before the page is done refreshing, there's a chance that a user might click on the edit link again, and whenever that happens, 'hijaxing' fails. My question is how can i check that if a user clicks on a hyperlink and the page is refreshing, i delay until it is done refreshing, then i allow the 'hijax' to kick in.

• Installed service starting and then stopping immediatly

  Hey guys, I am trying to install a service with a setup project. So through a normal setup/msi file, the service should be installed in services. So it works, but when i press start, i get the error/fault shown in the picture below. Does anyone know what causes it and most of all how i can solve it? I've read the message, but can't seem to find the origin. I don't know the most common things that would cause this error. Thanks in advance. ps: Other post is not helping to solve the problem

• Can hash tables really be O(1)

  It seems to be common knowledge that hash tables can achieve O(1) but that has never made sense to me. Can someone please explain it? A. The value is an int smaller than the size of the hash table, so the value is its own hash, so there is no hash table but if there was it would be O(1) and still be inefficient. B. You have to calculate the hash, so the order is O(n) for the size of the data being looked up. The lookup might be O(1) after you do O(n) work, but that still comes out to O(n) in my eyes. And unless you have a perfect hash or a large hash table there are probably several items per bucket so it devolves into a small linear search at some point anyway. I think hash tables are awesome, but I do not get the O(1) designation unless it is just supposed to be theoretical.

• Method for demonstrating iPad application in online meetings

  We have recently developed an iPad application and now need to start demonstrating it to customers and prospects as part of our overall product suite during webinars. As part of our Agile methodology, we also need to periodically review the application with key customers without having to distribute it since the application is not a standalone application and requires a connection to web services installed at each customer site. We have searched high and low for any solution that doesn't involve rooting the device but have been unable to find one. The most common suggestion seems to be to point a webcam at the device, but that comes across as very unprofessional. I know that there are VGA out adapters that can be plugged into the iPad and we have used these to present through a projector when the customer is physically present, but this is a relatively rare occurrence. Perhaps there are solutions that we are unaware of that can be used to send VGA output back into a desktop device for screen sharing?

• Boost.Log - Multiple processes to one log file?

  Reading through the doc for Boost.Log, it explains how to "fan out" into multiple files/sinks pretty well from one application, and how to get multiple threads working together to log to one place, but is there any documentation on how to get multiple processes logging to a single log file? What I imagine is that every process would log to its own "private" log file, but in addition, any messages above a certain severity would also go to a "common" log file. Is this possible with Boost.Log? Is there some configuration of the sinks that makes this easy? I understand that I will likely have the same "timestamp out of order" problem described in the FAQ here, but that's OK, as long as the timestamps are correct I can work with that. This is all on one machine, so no remote filesystem problems either.

• Any way to make GetTypes() less brittle.

  I'm iterating through all the types in GAC, GAC_32 and GAC_MSIL looking for specific types, fundamentally to match those using clauses in my source code, so when I compile the source. I'll know exactly what assembly dll's to provide. I'm getting all the file names from each of those directory and applying GetTypes to each assembly in turn and comparing the returned types against my using list. But the problem I have is that GetTypes() keeps crapping out with an exception, when it can't load the types from a loaded assembly. Is their any way to make GetTypes() less brittle. For instance, when parsing this assembly on my box, {blbmmc, Version=6.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35}, it craps out. Any suggestions welcome. I know this is a fairly lengthly process, but I figure i'll eventually use a subset of common assemblies to search, or possibly cache the list of types-assembly dll name at program start. Thanks.

  I have two projects in my solution   1- asp.net web project.   2- wcf serivce project.   3- other common projects between two listed above Current on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way i can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance and also be able to debug my asp.net web project. ? I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one. For example, let's say a component receives a click on one of its buttons to save data. Should the save request be delegated up that component's ancestors, with the uppermost ancestor ultimately passing the request to a controller? Or are models/datastores in a GUI application typically singletons, so that a component at any level of a hierarchy can directly get/set data? Or is a controller injected as a dependency down the hierarchy of components, so that any given component is only one intermediary away from the datastore/model?

  Given a Java or JavaScript program, after its execution, print out a sequence of calls. The calls are in invocation order. E.g. main() { A(); } A() { B(); C(); } Then the call trace should be: main -> A() -> B() -> C() Is there any tool that can profile and output this kind of information?   At work, we are using SVN, CVS, and GIT because there any many projects that were started at various times. Anyway, a common sequence that occurs is as follows: Working on task A, making changes to project Has new task B, some bug or functionality needs to be done on project, independent of task A but may affect same set of files Check in task B Check in task A Unfortunately, what I do at this time is two maintain 2 working copies of each project. So I can always work on task B from a clean copy. As you can imagine, this is wasteful and also, does not scale well (task C, D, E, etc.) For each of these versioning systems, are there commands that can help me do the following: "Save" task A, reverting working copy to current repository Work on task B, check in changes "Restore" task A changes back to working copy
