• How can I create a bootable DVD iso from a USB drive?

  There seems to be a lot of questions / answers about doing the reverse, but not as much info for USB - DVD. Problem I created a bootable USB drive using YUMI. The USB drive is working great, and contains the following: Linux Mint 13 Linux Mint Debian Debian 6 Ubuntu 12.04.1 Fedora 17 A bit of a mix of DVD and Live versions. I have a spindle of DVD+R DL blank DVD's. I would like to create a bootable .iso from this USB drive so I can burn multiple copies of it to pass around to friends! I've created an iso using Folder2ISO, but it coastered my DVD because it wasn't bootable. I don't really want to waste a whole spindle! How would you go about doing such a thing?

• How to create a new user group and add user to it in Ubuntu 12.04

  My OS is Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop version (32bit). I want to create a new group called restricted which allows its users to use Audio devices and Video devices only, and I want to add a user called visitors to that group. By using Users and Groups, I was able to create a new user account called visitors, and a new group called restricted. But I can't figure out how to add those settings to the group restricted, and add the visitors user account to that group. I tried Google-ing, but every search result was about accessing root privileges and all, and I couldn't find answers on this specific topic.

• Emacs: Prevent TRAMP connection closing

  I'm using emacs with TRAMP ( C-x C-f /ftp:[email protected]:/ ), and randomly, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes, ~12 seconds (no exaggerating) my connection will close (I think). I'll try to type, or list a dir, and it will say "Opening FTP connection to site.com...". Is there a way to tell it to just keep the connection open until I exit? Or is it the webserver killing the connection? I'm just using standard FTP. Thanks.

• NFS of NAS server blocks in cluster environment

  In our department we have an Iomega NAS (px4-300d) connected to a Supermicro cluster with 5 nodes (12 cores per node). Each node mounts a share on that NAS by using NFS. Unfortunately after some time (several minutes) of permanent read/write operations (from all nodes) the NAS starts to block and a bit later freezes completely. We tried several options of the mount command, but nothing helped (async, intr, wsize, rsize). The NAS itself doesn't allow many options (better to say none). Do you have any recommendation how to integrate a NAS using NFS in a cluster environment?

• group write permission ignored in ubuntu

  Its probably my stupidy here but i'm stuck on this and would appreciate the help. I want my user to have full access to the local apache root folder, and i also want the apache to have full access to the same folder. What i did was create a new group called DevGroup and i added my username and www-data there. also i changed the permissions to 770 to allow full group access but now it wont allow me or the apache any kind of access to the folder. here is what i get with ls drwxrwx--- 12 root DevGroup 4096 Sep 27 17:34 testFolder which seems perfect but when i try as a user to access the file i get this var/www$ ls testFolder/ ls: cannot open directory testFolder/: Permission denied also when i try to access the a page in the folder from browser [Thu Sep 27 17:47:16 2012] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] PHP Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required '/var/www/testFolder/foo.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear') in Unknown on line 0

• Refreshing Windows Media library by command line

  Many file download managers allow you to run a command after your download finishes. Is there a command line to run a Windows Media Player 12 library refresh? Videos don't show up in the available list on my PS3 until the library is refreshed. Right now, I manually open Windows Media Player after the downloads finish, watch the bottom-right corner for the refresh to complete (ie. Update Complete), then close the player. This works, but there has to be a better way. Yes, I know PS3 Media Server would do the trick, and I do use it when I need to transcode something, but WMP is running all the time, so I'd like to take advantage of it.

Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual). Before enabling "RRA" I had to unshare internet connection (wan interface) and was able to setup network. Now how do I setup a network within "RRA" and share internet with private network?   I have a few machines set up on my internal 192.168.1.* network and i have one public ip, my router is links all ports to on internal linux machine on my network 192.168.1.3. I want to know how to configure the DNS server on my linux box to forward to internal LAN ip's depending on the host name. EG. computer4.83.22.56.12 would find my box then forward to 192.168.1.4 on the local network. This is so i can run multiple web server under one ip. btw, i use Ubuntu. Thanks Dave

• crontab still sending emails even with > /dev/null

  I have a crontab (root) that runs a script and output is set to /dev/null but I always get the emails whenever it runs. I only want to receive error emails. # Rackspace driveclient update (12pm MST) 0 12 * * * /root/scripts/driveclient-update > /dev/null The only way I can get it to turn off is to use /dev/null 2&1 but then I won't get error emails. This is happening on three different CentOS servers, two are 6.3 and one is 6.4. NOTE: I have read over and over that /dev/null is supposed to send stdout there and prevent the email if there is nothing but stdout from the script, so at works for at least some people; I cannot figure out why it is not working on these servers.   In my ~ dir, I have some symlinks that point to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/..." and I want to find them all recursively. A look at the man page for 'find' says the '-lname' argument will search the symbolic link contents. It appears to work, but not recursively: $ pwd /Users/myusername $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' $ cd Documents/ $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' ./Documents on Win7 ./work.rtf What's going on? How can I make this work recursively? -- The 'find' program is supposed to always work recursively. • How to link to an Excel pivot table that will expand over time in Word 2007?

  I have a pivot table in Excel 2007 which I’ve pasted it into Word 2007 using Paste Special (Paste link) - Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Object. The pivot table appears in Word and the link to Excel is working. The problem is that if the pivot table expands (for example, due to showing 12 months of data rather than six months) the link to the pivot table in Word will only show the range cells that were originally copied over with the pivot table. I understand why this happens. When I paste as a link to Word the underling field codes look like this: {LINK Excel.Sheet.8 "C:\Users\myAccount\Documents\testexcel.xlsx" "Sheet2!R1C1:R8C2" \a \p} The codes refer to a fixed area (e.g., Sheet2!R1C1:R8C2 ) of the Excel spreadsheet, and so when the pivot table expands, the expanded cells fall outside the area that is defined in the field codes. Is there some way to have the link refer to the pivot table itself rather than the cell range that happened to be originally copied over from Excel?

• Apache Ubuntu SSL Configuration

  Where besides the vhost configuration can SSL be configured? I see an SSL configuration in sites-available but it's not an enabled vhost (and the certificate it points to is expired). Using apache2 -V shows me the configuration directory is /etc/apache2 but I can not for the life of me find the SSL configuration and it's driving me crazy.   So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this. • Restore Point area getting deleted

  Hi, I'm running a multi-boot scenario (which I have been successfully on a number of machines for a number of years). I have Windows 7 (32 bit) on one partition and Windows 7 (64 bit) on another and a common data partition (which happens to store the user hives for each OS instance). For some reason, on one particular machine (a HP Pavilion notebook) the restore points get trashed after a reboot. I can create them (both manually and automatically), but after some (but not all) reboots the restore points get trashed. I have all three partitions set (on both OSs) to hold restore information. This setup has worked successfully on other machines for at least 12 months. I'm out of ideas... I DO need the restore points as I do "bleeding edge" stuff and they've saved my bacon on other machines in the past... TIA, Paolo

• Why won't Windows use the other CPU cores?

  In Windows Task Manager the Performance tab shows the first CPU maxed out, the other 7 just idling along with the occasional spike. What gives? More info: I've got 8GB and only 4.5GB are being used. The Processes tab has no indication of any process hogging processing power. In fact System Idle Process is 98-99. When I program stuff and have like 8 to 12 applications going (several directly unrelated to programming of course) my computer slows to a crawl.   My company provides private research tools (sites) for companies. Each site has its own domain name and users. These sites need to be able to send outbound mail for notifications such as password reminders. We started using Google Apps for this purpose, but lately we are having tremendous problems with mailing, especially to hotmail. I added the SPF record as required. Mxtoolbox says my domains are not in any blacklists. I was told to contact https://postmaster.live.com/snds/addnetwork.aspx and add my network. Given that I am using google's mail servers for sending mail, should I add their IP address for registering my domain? Or should I add my server's IP even though I am not hosting the mail server on it? • Windows 2008 R2 on ESXi 4.1 cpu utilization kernel high

  I have a Win2k8 guest running on ESXi 4.1. The host has 12 cores and the problem happens even if the guest is the only VM on the host. We have 4 cores dedicated to the guest. We noticed that network starts chocking when the CPU load goes up. After some testing we noticed that when running a simple CPU hogging tool set up to run 3 threads at 100% the regular CPU load goes to 75% like it should and the "kernel times" graph in task manager goes up to 25%. My intuition tells me that the network problem and kernel times problem are the same. This is confirmed by another similar VM we created on the same host which doesn't have either of the problems. VMWare tools are obviously installed. The nic is e1000. What else can we do to troubleshoot this?

• How is the PHP extensions/modules file structure logic based?

  I'm trying to configure/build PHP 5.3.10 on Linux/Slackware 12 but the extensions appear in the wrong directory when I run make install. In the php.ini file is the extension dir defined: /usr/lib/php/extensions Problem is that when I run "make install" the newly built extensions are copied to a subfolder in extensions directory: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626 What am I supposed to do with this... copy the files down from the no-debug-non-zts-20090626 directory into the extensions directory, create symlinks from extensions to the modules in the no-debug-non-zts-20090626 directory (which will take a lot of time) or what? (I know I can do any of them, but I want to know the correct way...)

• VLC stream with trickplay

  The idea is to start a video stream from one computer and watch it on another with the ability to start/stop the stream. I think I could do this with VLC but i haven't been able to figure out how. I've tried the following: (From the official forum) Stream with RTSP and RTP: on the server, run: % vlc -vvv input_stream --sout '#rtp{dst=192.168.0.12,port=1234,sdp=rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp}' on the client(s), run: % vlc rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp But this doesn't give me the ability to start/stop the stream from the client. According to the VLC release note something called "Trick play" was added in version 1.0. This seems to be what I'm looking for but i can't find any documentation that descibes how to use it.
