• How can I sort du -h output by size

  I need to get a list of human readable du output. However, du does not have a "sort by size" option, and piping to "sort" doesn't work with the human readable flag. For example, running: du | sort -n -r Outputs a sorted disk usage by size (descending): du |sort -n -r 65108 . 61508 ./dir3 2056 ./dir4 1032 ./dir1 508 ./dir2 However, running it with the human readable flag, does not sort properly: du -h | sort -n -r 508K ./dir2 64M . 61M ./dir3 2.1M ./dir4 1.1M ./dir1 Does anyone know of a way to sort du -h by size?

• Installing ruby 1.9.1 on OS X with RVM, getting error I can't make sense of

  I'm trying to update my ruby install on Leopard to at least 1.9.1. I found a tutorial that tells me how to do it with RVM and I get as far as downloading, configuring and compiling the version I want, but during the compile I get errors. • How to backup data on debian vps to dropbox?

  I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? Also is it possible to incorporate backup into script for cron job?

• ASP.NET MVC hosting recommendations

  I'm looking for recommendations for hosting an asp.net MVC application. Obviously, we need to be able to have access to configure IIS directly - I'd prefer not to have to go thru a control panel. The web server needs to have a dedicated IP, since some clients will be accessing it via IP. We need at least a SQLServer 2005 database, ideally on the same box. Load and usage will be pretty low, so a virtual machine will probably be fine. Does any one have any recommendations that meet the above constraints?

• Not able to access other machines on network

  Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

I’m interested in those that are relevant in a typical home network and used over the Internet explains in detail how ADSL Internet connections work to the level of depth necessary so that I’m able to tweak and measure performance settings starts from the beginning but attempts to provide proper understanding rather than idiot-oriented steps to follow Basically, I’m interested in how these technologies work and tend to be implemented in hardware and software rather than “here’s what to do if…” I’m interested in Computer Networking by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

• Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

• inetmgr missing after vista iis7 install

  I have installed IIS7 on Vista with all options from Programs and Features->Turn on/off windows features. I have searched for inetmgr accross the whole system with no luck. It is also not present in C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv. The IIS Admin Service is shown as running in the list of all services. Might anyone know what the problem is? My initial problem before this was that after installing IIS and trying to view any arbitrary page via localhost/*filename*, i recieved the error HTTP Error 404.4 - Not Found The resource you are looking for does not have a handler associated with it.

  How to access Windows Registry from DOS? I need to access registry from DOS, while I boot from DOS bootable disk. I've searched all the internet, and found only Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, which can not be used in DOS, as I understand. Also I've found RegView (from many mirrors), which isn't working too (I've tried many instructions). Is there any easy-in-usage tool, like reg.exe, which is able to load registry hives, so that I can change registry values?? Or any working instructions ?? Note: I already have a bootable drive, which can read/write to NTFS drives. Thanks in advance!

• Restrict Overriding memory_limit in php.ini

  We have a issue that just came to our notice, some of our developers used ini_set('memory_limit', -1) to over-ride the php.ini memory_limit settings in their code files. Due to which sometimes our Memory/CPU usage is way far more than usual and we even have experienced server hanging/crashing many times. Is there any way to restrict these changes for certain params like memory_limit, upload_max_filesize & post_max_size? Users should not be able to edit them after a certain limit set? Sorry if i asked a dumb question, tried searching but there was no reference to this only found answers asking for increasing these parameters.

• VMWare Server :: VM set to 2gb RAM but vmware process shows 100mb physical, 1900mb virtual

  I've set up a VMWare instance to run CastIron Integration Appliance. I allocated 2gb of memory to the instance, assuming it would take this as physical memory (my server has 8gb total). When I view top however on the server, the vmware-vmx process has about 100m Resident memory and 1900m Virtual. Running CastIron it reports that the appliance often hits 50% memory usage. Does this mean I'm using 900mb of harddrive space as memory? I wanted VMWare to use 2gb of physical memory, no swap. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this?   I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!

• Can I use a Google Appliance/Mini to crawl and index sites I don't own?

  Maybe this is a stupid question, but... I am working with this company and they said they needed to get "permission" to crawl other people's sites. They have a Google Search Appliance And some Google Minis and want to point them at other sites to aggregate content. The end result will be something like a targeted search engine. (All the indexed sites relate to a specific topic) The only thing they will be doing is: Indexing Content from the other sites/domains Providing search functionality on their own site that searches the indexed content (like Google, displaying summaries and not the full content) The search results will provide links back to the original content Their intent is not malicious in nature, and is to provide a single site/resource for people to reference on their given topic. Is there anything illegal or fishy about this process?

• sp_releaseapplock timeout expired cause?

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server.   I have an e-commerce site with 300,000 products and 20,000 categories. It is slow and currently in production. I decided to install Varnish to speed up. The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity. I say that there may be a specific configuration with plesk. Has anyone already installed Varnish on a ubuntu 10.04 server with plesk 10? Does anyone have a better resource? • Blender Render Cycles

  I get a very poor Render in cycles. Not just minor problems, but just a cloud of of black and white dots and no contour at all. I read a lot about this now and couldn't get it to work. Does anybody know how to get the settings right. Or better what do I have to pay attention to get better renders. I also tried external renderer like Lux, which increased my CPU usage to 98 % (just the default cube and clicking on Lux and load materials). Is this normal and what could i do to improve that. I have various versions of Blender (2.61,2.62,2.63) on Mac OS X. Thanks for the time.

  Hi, I have a web application written by asp.net (c#) sql server 2005. we host it on 2 dedicated server ( IIS and SQL server ) From some month ago , in some days of week we have many reports about speed issue. we have some other application on this server using same database. when we have speed problem all aplication on these server have this problem, but applications on other server in same data center work correctly. ram and cpu usage are ok. how can I check that the problem related to internet connection or my application design? which parameters must be checked. Some other information In applications users can upload several files to server , each file up to 3 MB. we use a sql web admin application, on same server that has same problem, this is a standard application which work perfectly on other servers. • Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

  We are installing the Windows Resource Kit, and that installs RoboCopy. We want to have access to a few windows scripts that uses RoboCopy so we can start from those to build something else. Any ideas on where I can find a few samples? NOTE 1: A bit of information. Every time we try to copy D drive to E drive (new drive) we get an error that says: ERROR 32 (0x000000020) Copying File d:\pagefile.sys The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Waiting 30 seconds. Just to help figure it out.

When running 2nd pass , the CPU seems to be at 98% usage, but first pass run totally ignores "-threads" option. Using libx264 . • Missing disk space in Windows XP

  On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?
