  • What affects video encoding speeds?

    FRAPs doesn't compress its videos when you record, so the files are enormous. In a long recording you can get up to a few hundred gigabytes. Obviously, usually you would need to convert/compress them. What affects the speed of this? I don't think the RAM does, as when I converted 600 gb my RAM usage only went to 6 gig, but the processor was at 100%, which is surprising as I have a 6 core processor @ 3.46 ghz. Would clock speed or cores help the most?

  • Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

    Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

  • Problems with blocking reads using libudev on Linux

    We are using the following routine (on Linux, with libudev) to read data from a PIC microcontroller configured as a USB HID device. The data is sent only when a button connected to the PIC microcontroller is pressed or released. The routine is missing messages from the PIC controller, and I suspect that this is because the call to poll below is not behaving as it should. The call to poll will reliably block for 1 second util the first message is read. As soon as the first message is read, the call to poll returns immediately instead of blocking for 1 second (1000 milliseconds) like it should. I have worked around this problem by closing and re-opening the device after each read.   • Windows Virtual PC File Copy from host very slow

    I have a Windows 7 desktop on which I've installed Windows Virtual PC and an instance Windows 7. I also have virtual XP instance on the same host. The problem I am having is that copying files from the host to the virtual machine is dog slow. I'm talking 17KB/sec. The host machine has a gigbit NIC. While using the XP virtual instance to do the same I didn't notice a huge difference but on the Window 7 virtual instance the time is really slowing me down. Is there something I need to do (settings) to fix this? I've attached an image of the Resource monitor (of the virtual Windows 7 instance) that shows my network traffic going in bursts rather than relatively steady. The files are on a "public" folder on my host machine.

  • Restrict Overriding memory_limit in php.ini

    We have a issue that just came to our notice, some of our developers used ini_set('memory_limit', -1) to over-ride the php.ini memory_limit settings in their code files. Due to which sometimes our Memory/CPU usage is way far more than usual and we even have experienced server hanging/crashing many times. Is there any way to restrict these changes for certain params like memory_limit, upload_max_filesize & post_max_size? Users should not be able to edit them after a certain limit set? Sorry if i asked a dumb question, tried searching but there was no reference to this only found answers asking for increasing these parameters.

  • Can I use a Google Appliance/Mini to crawl and index sites I don't own?

    Maybe this is a stupid question, but... I am working with this company and they said they needed to get "permission" to crawl other people's sites. They have a Google Search Appliance And some Google Minis and want to point them at other sites to aggregate content. The end result will be something like a targeted search engine. (All the indexed sites relate to a specific topic) The only thing they will be doing is: Indexing Content from the other sites/domains Providing search functionality on their own site that searches the indexed content (like Google, displaying summaries and not the full content) The search results will provide links back to the original content Their intent is not malicious in nature, and is to provide a single site/resource for people to reference on their given topic. Is there anything illegal or fishy about this process?

  • Where can I find ready to use windows scripts that used robocopy?

    We are installing the Windows Resource Kit, and that installs RoboCopy. We want to have access to a few windows scripts that uses RoboCopy so we can start from those to build something else. Any ideas on where I can find a few samples? NOTE 1: A bit of information. Every time we try to copy D drive to E drive (new drive) we get an error that says: ERROR 32 (0x000000020) Copying File d:\pagefile.sys The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Waiting 30 seconds. Just to help figure it out.

  • Generating my own SQL Server SSL Certificate

    I hear it's possible to make myself a test certificate with MakeCert from Windows SDK, but the beast is 1.5 GB, which I feel reluctant to download for a half-megabyte program. I do, however, have IIS Resource kit with me, which has selfssl to generate certificate for IIS. Will that work for SQL Server? Is there a more convenient way of generating myself an SSL certificate for SQL Server use? I even tried using CREATE CERTIFICATE with TSQL within SQL Server and then have it BACKUP into a file, but with no success. I must have confused the concept of certificate fundamentally. Any advice?

The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity.     I hope this is the correct place where I could ask this question. My mother is an accountant with a degree in economics. She works as a freelancer and she needs some licenses for her job. The biggest problem is adobe acrobat standard, which costs 400€, quite a lot. I want understand if she must buy it to create pdf files or she can use some free (even for commercial use) programs that she has because of her job (the chamber of commerce provide some advantages to accountants).   • Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

    Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

  • Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

    I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

    Note: I've viewed cron: can’t lock /var/run/crond.pid, otherpid may be 3759 but I believe my question is different (but with the same resulting problem.) I'm very new to cron. I setup a script to run a python script every minute to test that everything was working. I did use crontab to accomplish this. It worked great, so I wanted to switch it to run every 4 hour. I changed my * * * * * {...} to * */4 * * * {...} but the job is continues to run every minute. It's been like this for the last hour or so. When I attempt to run cron restart (thinking that would solve the problem), I receive the following error message: cron: can't lock /var/run/crond.pid, otherpid may be 2311: Resource temporarily unavailable Is my cron syntax wrong? And why might I not be able to restart cron?

  • Missing disk space in Windows XP

    On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. For this, I need a CLI-based monitoring tool that keeps me giving information about the resource usage of each VM, because it might be the case that due to over-provisioning of resources, VMs on a particular host are running very slowly depending on the benchmarks/programs each VM is running, and then I need to migrate a VM to another host and so on. I looked into libvirt-based tools like collects, MUNIN, Nagios-vert, etc.( http://libvirt.org/apps.html#monitoring ) I also looked into Ubuntu utility perf-kvm ( http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man1/perf-kvm.1.html ) I want to ask which CLI-based would be recommended by the community so that I can make a automated scheduler that takes care of the above situation.

  • How to backup data on debian vps to dropbox?

    I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? Also is it possible to incorporate backup into script for cron job?

    I am trying to push my server's CPU cores to the max, but no success. Encoding 2-pass style, set my "-threads" to 128 . When running 2nd pass , the CPU seems to be at 98% usage, but first pass run totally ignores "-threads" option. Using libx264 . Here is my preset: flags=+loop+mv4 cmp=256 partitions=+parti4x4+parti8x8+partp4x4+partp8x8+partb8x8 me_method=hex subq=7 trellis=1 refs=5 bf=3 flags2=+bpyramid+wpred+mixed_refs+dct8x8 coder=1 me_range=16 g=250 keyint_min=25 sc_threshold=40 i_qfactor=0.71 qmin=10 qmax=51 qdiff=4 Is there any reason why the 1st pass is not utilizing my CPUs ?
