• Storing millions of URLs in a database for fast pattern matching

  I am developing a web analytics kind of system which needs to log referring URL, landing page URL and search keywords for every visitor on the website. What I want to do with this collected data is to allow end-user to query the data such as "Show me all visitors who came from Bing.com searching for phrase that contains 'red shoes'" or "Show me all visitors who landed on URL that contained 'campaign=twitter_ad'", etc. Because this system will be used on many big websites, the amount of data that needs to log will grow really, really fast. So, my question: a) what would be the best strategy for logging so that scaling the system doesn't become a pain; b) how to use that architecture for rapid querying of arbitrary requests? Is there a special method of storing URLs so that querying them gets faster? In addition to MySQL database that I use, I am exploring (and open to) other alternatives better suited for this task.

• Integrating Hudson with MS Test?

  Is it possible to integrate Hudson with MS Test? I am setting up a smaller CI server on my development machine with Hudson right now, just so that I can have some statistics (ie. FxCop and compiler warnings). Of course, it would also be nice if it could just run my unit tests and present their output. Up to now, I have added the following batch task to Hudson, which makes it run the tests properly. "%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\MSTest.exe" /runconfig:LocalTestRun.testrunconfig /testcontainer:Tests\bin\Debug\Tests.dll However, as far as I know, Hudson does not support analysis of MS Test results, yet. Does anyone know whether the TRX files generated by MSTest.exe can be transformed to the JUnit or NUnit result format (because those are supported by Hudson), or whether there is any other way to integrate MS Test unit tests with Hudson?

• How do I get all data from a mysql table via php, and print out the contents of every cell ?

  Hi. I've got a database table with at least three rows in it. From php, I have successfully connected to my db and extracted all table information with 'SELECT * from mytable' . Now I want to loop through first each row, and then each cell, printing out the contents of each cell. I know this might be a simple task for a more experienced programmer, but I can't figure it out, and I can't find any examples online and it's driving me stark raving bonkers. How can I do this ?

• REGEX to extract word connected to nearest semicolon?

  I'm attempting to extract a series of data values from a text file. The values are in the format: <MODIFIER NAME1 VALUE; MODIFIER NAME2 VALUE;> For the purposes of the current task that I have, I only care about extracting the VALUE that is situated next to each semicolon. What would the REGEX command look like that would isolate each of these VALUES (preferably so that I backreference all values in the replacement part of my processing.) I believe that ^(.*?); is somehow used, but I'm not seeing how to isolate only the word that is attached to the semicolon in a group for backreference use. Thanks!

• Seam log4j credential logs

  In Seam, using log4, I would like to have my info, warn and error always logging the logged in user (if so) name to be logged with whatever the log message is. Being a consistant thing I do not want to have to grab the logged-in user name, and prefix the message. so I attempted to populate the log4j NDC to have it as a field of the log message. Pushing the user name on successful login: NDC.push(credentials.getUsername()); Which works, but the NDC is managed per thread, so once another thread processes a request from the same logged in user, the trace of this user name is lost. I was thinking that there should be a common pattern to accomplish this simple task which is attaching each log message to the logged user, using the NDC or not, to know exactly what user triggered what action. Anyone knows the appropriate way to accomplish this?

  I have a task to validate addresses entered into a system I am currently creating. The system requires that address entered are validated against a valid data source. In the UK the dataset comes from the Royal Mail and is expensive to access. The data needed is post code info for the whold of europe to start with accessed by an API into the web application. There are a number of companies that offer this service, QAS Capscan Postcode anywhere These all offer the service I require. However this is expensive and in some cases not a complete data set. e.g. not Ireland I was also wondering if there would be a way to utalis the google maps API to validate this data via postal code and country. Would the google maps method be possible or do I have to go down the line of one of these expensive companies? Any thoughts on what line I should take.

• Make a usable Join relationship with LINQ on top of a database CSV design error

  I'm looking for a way to fix and/or abstract away a comma-separated values (CSV) list in a database field in order to reconstruct a usable relationship such that I can properly join the two tables below and query them using LINQ and its Join method. Following is a sample showing the Person table and CsvArticleIds field having a CSV value to represent a one-to-many association with Article records. Now what I am trying to do is in a report I have the top 5 people who have visited the site and would like to then be able to drill down into what lessons they have clicked on.   This is the way I get to prevent funA,funB,funC, etc.. for being used before init #define INIT_KEY 0xC0DE //any number except 0, is ok static int initialized=0; int Init() { //many init task initialized=INIT_KEY; } int funA() { if (initialized!=INIT_KEY) return 1 //.. } int funB() { if (initialized!=INIT_KEY) return 1 //.. } int funC() { if (initialized!=INIT_KEY) return 1 //.. } The problem with this approach is that if some of those function is called within a loop so "if (initialized!=INIT_KEY)" is called again, and again, although it's not necessary. It's a good example of why constructors are useful haha, If it were an object I would be sure that when was created initialization was called, but in C, I don't know how to do it. Any other ideas are welcome!

• Why does File::Find finished short of completely traversing a large directory?

  A directory exists with a total of 2,153,425 items (according to Windows folder Properties). It contains .jpg and .gif image files located within a few subdirectories. The task was to move the images into a different location while querying each file's name to retrieve some relevant info and store it elsewhere. The script that used File::Find finished at 20462 files. Out of curiosity I wrote a tiny recursive function to count the items which returned a count of 1,734,802. I suppose the difference can be accounted for by the fact that it didn't count folders, only files that passed the -f test. The problem itself can be solved differently by querying for file names first instead of traversing the directory. I'm just wondering what could've caused File::Find to finish at a small fraction of all files. The data is stored on an NTFS file system.

• Rename files to increment filenumber using PowerShell?

  Hi, I've got a bunch of files named attachment.023940 attachment.024039 attachment.024041 attachment.024103 etc... I need to rename the files by incrementing the filenumber by a given number. (So that they match the right ID in a database) I guess I could write a C# application that uses RegEx to parse the filename, but I assume this is a task that could be accomplished in PowerShell as well? I've found several other threads on SO about using PowerShell to rename files, but none of them handled incrementing a filenumber. I'm on Win7, so PowerShell 2.0 is available.

• Jquery help for current time indication within a range

  I'm looking for a simple light-weight jquery plugin that'll help me show something like this in my website: Essentially, this is like a timeline. I know the start and end dates (in that, they don't change) and the position of today's date just gives an indication of how far along I am into a task I took up on Jun 1, 2012. That's all I need it for - a better visual indication of my current status. I've found a lot of jquery timeline plugins but they are too complex for what I'm trying to do. Any ideas or suggestions?   Hi, I need to create a handover document for a fairly large system consisting of all the stuff you'd expect from a telecom deployment: many servers, database clusters which copy some data between them in specific ways, tons of log files, both off-the-shelf and locally developed software, scripts, network configurations, local know-how, etc. It's really got as many sysadmin-typical elements, as development ones. The target of this document are in the first place sysadmins who take over the day-to-day operation tasks and some problem resolving, and in the second place people who want to learn about the system in general. Is there some place I can learn about how to write something like that? It could just as easily be a 10 page "what's where", as a 500 pages book about "all things telephony". Maybe it should be more than one document really. Please link some useful resources / books I could use for this task. PS: this is intended to be internal only, customer interactions etc. are out of scope here

  Simple task: Send a windows message with dynamically allocated data, e.g. an arbitrary length string. How would you manage the responsibility to free this data? The receiver(s) of the windows message could be responsible to free this data. But: How can you guarantee that all messages will actually be received and thus the linked data will be freed? Imagine the situation that the receiver is shutting down, so it won't process it's message queue any more. However, the message queue still exists (for some time) and can still accept messages, which won't be processed any more. Thanks!

• C++ networking simple send and receive

  I'm trying to link 10 computers together, the program i would like to write would have one 'control' computer. From what I've looked up this computer would take all the packets sent over the network and do a echo with them... right? The other computers would need to be able to send information (then echoed to the others) to the 'control' ... is there a easy! or simple way to do this? From what I've seen i want a non-blocking socket? I have looked into sockets and such but for an armature programmer like me, this seems like a daunting task :) I'm kind-of looking for an easy class implication that has a send() and an event driven recv(). I'm not going to be sending that much information over the network.

• Best datastructure for frequently queried list of objects

  Hello, I have a list of objects say, List. The Entity class has an equals method,on few attributes ( business rule ) to differentiate one Entity object from the other. The task that we usually carry out on this list is to remove all the duplicates something like this : List<Entity> noDuplicates = new ArrayList<Entity>(); for(Entity entity: lstEntities) { int indexOf = noDuplicates.indexOf(entity); if(indexOf >= 0 ) { noDuplicates.get(indexOf).merge(entity); } else { noDuplicates.add(entity); } } Now, the problem that I have been observing is that this part of the code, is slowing down considerably as soon as the list has objects more than 10000.I understand arraylist is doing a o(N) search. Is there a faster alternative, using HashMap is not an option, because the entity's uniqueness is built upon 4 of its attributes together, it would be tedious to put in the key itself into the map ? will sorted set help in faster querying ? I'm issues quite a lot of updates to it during a task that is running, however there are noticable periods where it is BLANK. There are no points when I am writing a blank to the status strip label either. QUESTION: Any ideas why I would be seeing period where the status strip label is blank, when I don't expect it to be? But along the way, I developed more passion for seeing the system work - actually, I wrote in my eDiary "...I want to see this child of mine grow...". The work did mature indeed, and is now a successful system employed in analysis of academic progress in my client's schools. What am really wondering is whether it might help me more (or even other programmers) if this notion of approaching software development as if it were a task of raising one's child could help deliver better software and probably more lovable software :)

• I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++) after a internet explorer 8 crash in Release m

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

  I would like to hear the best practices or know how people perform the following task in TFS 2008. I am intending on using TFS for building and storing web applications projects. Sometimes these projects can contain 100's of files (*.cs, *.acsx etc) During the lifetime of the website, a small bug will get raised resulting in say a stylesheet change, and a change to default.aspx.cs for example. On checking in these changes to TFS, and automated build would be triggered (great!), however for deploying the changes to the target production machine, I only need to deploy for example: style.css default.asx MyWebApplications.dll So my question is, can MSBuild be customized to generate a "code pack" of only the files which require deploying to the production server based on the changeset which cause the re-build?

• Minimizing Java Thread Context Switching Overhead

  I have a Java application running on Sun 1.6 32-bit VM/Solaris 10 (x86)/Nahelem 8-core(2 threads per core). A specific usecase in the application is to respond to some external message. In my performance test environment, when I prepare and send the response in the same thread that receives the external input, I get about 50 us advantage than when I hand off the message to a separate thread to send the response. I use a ThreadPoolExecutor with a SynchronousQueue to do the handoff. In your experience what is the acceptable delay between scheduling a task to a thread pool and it getting picked up for execution? What ideas had worked for you in the past to try improve this?

  I want to use auto-completion in a number of fields (5-7) in my forms. There is a screencast on auto-completion with Prototype library by Ryan Bates ( http://railscasts.com/episodes/102-auto-complete-association). On the other hand, I have noticed that quite many guys suggest jQuery for this task ( http://jquery.bassistance.de/autocomplete/demo/). And I guess, there was probably some development last year(s), so I ask you - what would you use nowadays to auto-complete your form fields and why? • WPF: Convert memory stream to BitmapImage?

  I have an image that was originally a PNG that I have converted to a byte[] and saved in a database. Originally, I simply read the PNG into a memory stream and converted the stream into a byte[]. Now I want to read the byte[] back and convert it to a BitmapImage, so that I can bind a WPF Image control to it. I am seeing a lot of contradictory and confusing code online to accomplish the task of converting a byte[] to a BitmapImage. I am not sure whether I need to add any code due to the fact that the image was originally a PNG. Can anyone provide the code to convert the stream to a BitmapImage? Thanks for your help.
