• 1 year to learn as much as possile - How would you plan this time?

  I have been messing around with web development and programming in general for a couple of years now, working in web development agencies and the like. I have now decided that I want to move to more general programming and do this permanently and as a career and have set myself a goal of 1 year to learn as much as I can before I go out and find a 'proper' job as a programmer. Do any programmers out there have any opinions on how this time should be split and what the most important things to focus on will be over the year. The languages I will be focusing my learning on are: c, php, python and go - all of which i have varying degrees of familiarity with. The ultimate goal here is to gain as good as foundation as possible and to be of a good enough level to interview successfully for a decent company.

  Why do we use to talk about addresses and memory of variable in C, where in other languages (like in Java, .Net etc) we do not talk about variable address and memory in a program, we will directly use the variables. But in C Language we are listening the word address and memory. How to explain this? I hope C is high level language designed over the assembly language. So C is a thin layer over assembly language (in assembly language we will use memory locations to store a variable and track a variable). But in other languages these addresses and memory related things are wrapped in that specific language, so that we will not listen these words.

• Knockback enemy based off of direction sprite is facing

  Hey Everyone, Today I am trying to make it so if I hit the enemy then the enemy well be knocked backwards in the direction the sprite is facing. I am rotating the sprite around 360 degrees using a joystick on the screen and wanted to know the best practice or ways to accomplish this. I have come up with a few ideas but none of them make use of the sprites angle he is facing just a check to see if I hit the bottom then move him upward and so forth. I am just stumped on how to apply the sprites angle to the enemies x and y coordinate and move him accordingly. Has anyone tried this and have suggestions or things to look for? Thanks in advance.

• Issues with external mounting after pysdm removed

  So, I'm very new to ubuntu. I was having troubles getting my external hard drive to be read/write permission. It's owner is my macbook, and writing on the drive was repeatedly denied. In trying to sort this out, I tried the Nautilus commands (no success), installed the PYSDM application, changed some things (as suggested by this user in this forum http://askubuntu.com/a/113992 )but then found that I was getting an error message whenever I tried to mount an external storage device. The error is: Unable to mount DERPSTICK error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: [mntent]: line 14 in etc/fstab is bad mount: only root can mount /dev/sdc1/ on /media/sdc1 Others with similar problems put their fstab up here, but I'm not sure how to bring it up, or if I should even try. • Is the UX affected negatively by fully cacheable pages?

  I want to have fully cacheable pages in my websites, but one cannot do that if they contain user-specific data, like the userbar or things in the UI that can change depending on the permissions the user has. So I was thinking whether it was possible to pull everything that is user-specific via ajax, and update the UI accordingly. But I'm worried that this might be annoying for the user, and also it might be difficult to develop. What do you think? Is there a pattern or something I can follow to deal with this?

• System doesn't show option to select operating system during startup!

  i am new at linux and ubuntu, today i installed ubuntu 12.04 but during installation some problem happened, i don't remember what was that exactly (but can tell you that it was related to boot), so i reinstalled ubuntu (using usb stick both time) and ubuntu installation finished successfully, Now problem is that when I start my computer then system is directly selecting ubuntu as my operating system, i have installed it along with windows 7 in option during installation, so it should give me option to select which operating system i want to use. I don't know what may be the problem. Also, I want to know where ubuntu is installed (which directory)? i just selected default setting during installation as i am noob in these things.

• How do I install OSQA with limited access to the server?

  I would very much like to install OSQA on my host (provided/owned by my friend), but I can not make heads or tails of how I would go about doing it; a lot of the dependancies and such can't be installed with the current level of access (or most probably just knowledge) that I have. I can provide any further information required, and attempt to contact (friend) to see if he can do any of it for me, but I'm unsure as to how often I will be able to contact him. exec and shell_exec are not disabled on the server. If there are any other alternatives that I could use, please let me know! I tried Qwench but that was pretty buggy. I can usually deal with these kind of things, but this is my first foray into Python stuff!

I'm a novice php programmer, so while my application seems to work well, there may be inefficiencies or security vulnerabilities. I feel that I should have someone look over my code before making the application publicly available, but I'm hesitant to just post it online because it handles some rather sensitive things.   Certain windows are not opening in the last position/size I used them at. Opening "compose a message" with evolution through the message menu on the toolbar opens a window that is always in the top left of my screen. Opening Firefox 4.0 always opens maximized, even if i last used it in "windowed" mode. Other things I've tried that won't remember my custom positions: ccsm, terminal, gedit, sound recorder, calculator. Some other stuff works fine like banshee, empathy, shutter, deluge. Is this a bug? Is there a way to make these applications open in their last used positions/sizes?

• Help! Installer crashing

  I had ubuntu 12.04 installed on a Satellite l635. I wanted to start over with a fresh install because I had experimented with a bunch of different things, and computer was getting glitchy and random freezes. I used the same iso I used for original install, and it keeps say the installer crashed with a erron5 input/output error. Tried an older iso for 11.10 I had used in the past with same issue... To see if it was disc or computer (not a great idea) I tried the 12.04 iso on another laptop. Now I have 2 laptops with no os. Both discs however live boot on both systems. PLEASE HELP! I've searched forums and can't find the same problem.

• Can Agile/Scrum be used by 1 or 2 developers?

  Everything I've been reading and researching up to this point describes how Agile/Scrum works great with teams of about 4 to 6 members, maybe even more. In my current shop, we have about 8 developers or so, but given the nature of the volume of projects and the number of departments we support, we never have more than 1 or 2 folks assigned to a given project. Can I still use Agile/Scrum with a team of 1 or 2 developers? I'm working on making the pitch to my manager to start working with this methodology, but I need to be able to explain how to scale things back for a small developer crew, or convince them to make sure we get more members on a given project.

• Laptop suspend appears broken, what must I roll back?

  Question: What package contains the subprogram responsible for the KMenu option "sleep"? Background: I've been running KUbuntu 10.04.1 and I am completely updated. Recently (within the past month), the "sleep" menu item has stopped working. It just sits there waiting like I clicked nothing. I've check all of the logs in /var/log and nothing is added when I click sleep. I'm guessing that something I updated has bollux'ed things up, but I don't know which package contains the component that I need to roll back. In the meantime, I've installed uswsusp, but s2ram & s2both don't ask my password when the laptop resumes -- which really bothers me. So now that I've got a little time to track this down, I had to post -- any ideas??

• Do you need expensive servers and fancy hosting in order to make a multiplayer game?

  I've finished working on an RPG and it would seem so much more fun to make it multiplayer. SFML has a networking feature, I figured it's possible but then again, never in my life have I even tried something basic about networking, in fact my knowledge of it is very limited. What would it take to make a multiplayer game resource-wise? I'm not talking about an MMO, more like a co-op type of game.   I was always wondering about two things I tend to do in my little projects. Sometimes I will have this design: class FooClass ... self.foo = "it's a bar" self._do_some_stuff(self) def _do_some_stuff(self): print(self.foo) And sometimes this one: class FooClass2 ... self.do_some_stuff(foo="it's a bar") def do_some_stuff(self, foo): print(foo) Although I roughly understand the differences between functional and class approaches, I struggle with the design. For example, in FooClass the self.foo is always accessible as an attribute. If there are numerous calls to it, is that faster than making foo a local variable that is passed from method to method (like in FooClass2)? What happens in memory in both cases? If FooClass2 is preferred (ie. I don't need to access foo) and other attributes inside do not change their states (the class is executed once only and returns the result), should the code then be written as a series of functions in a module?

  I'm currently trying to use JavaScript to find out how far down the page the user has scrolled; for Firefox 8.0, the keyword is pageYOffset. To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position?   Coming from Windows, so that is what my expectations are based on. I have a Ubuntu desktop edition instance running as a virtual machine on a server. I would like to use it as my primary open source dev environment but the VNC tools I have used don't seem to be as rich as "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows. The two things that are missing for me: connecting/logging into a non-console user sessions dynamically resizing the graphical resolution based on the size of the remote desktop window device sharing (USB devices plugged into client shared with remote) Is there an appropriate client that I can run on Windows to connect to my ubuntu dev instance that provides these capabilities?

• How to load data for specific level at runtime?

  I'm trying to create a game with many levels loaded from XML files. In my game I have many objects in each level. At present my game contains 20 levels, and I load all the textures at once on startup. But I think the correct way to do it is to only load textures used in the current level. I don't know how to do that. So please explain this by providing some example code. At present I create a class for each type of entity by extending my Sprite class. This subclass loads the appropriate image. I know this is not the best way to do things. Basically I want to know how to load large levels efficiently in Andengine. What is the proper method for loading textures, level data and background images from files when the level is run?

• Y Axis inverted on vertex output

  I've got my project running and somehow it seems my vertex y components are inverted. 10 in the positive on Y goes down and 10 negative on the Y axis goes up. I can't find anything with the initialization and I am not doing any negative scaling in the view matrix. I've never had something like this happen before, does anyone have some tips or things to look for ? How I am sending verteces to the GPU ( Currently intermediate mode ) glVertex3f( x_pos_n, 10, z_pos ); I am using CG in the project but even without shaders the Y axis seems to be inverted.

• How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

  I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

• Should I keep separate client codebases and databases for a software-as-a-service application?

  My question is about the architecture of my application. I have a Rails application where companies can administrate all things related to their clients. Companies would buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my application/service. What should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision involves security (e.g. a user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc). For the sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base, but for the database I really don't know. What do you think is the best option?

• How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

  I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?
