  • Making video from 3D gaphics in OpenGL

    What are some of the preferred methods or libraries for creating video from an OpenGL graphics simulation? For example, I want to create a visualization(video) of an N-Body gravity simulation by rendering non-real-time OpenGL frames. The simulation is already coded, I just don't know how to convert it to video. EDIT: I am also interested in providing the described functionality: The user can adjust parameters including the time step between captured frames and then initiate the simulation. The user waits for the simulation to complete, and then can watch the results. The user is able to increase or decrease the playback speed of the simulation whereas in slow motion, more frames are used i.e., you see higher resolution time steps, and when the speed is increased, you see lower resolution time steps at a higher rate, but the frames per second flashing on the screen is constant.

    If you have been living under a rock for the past year, you wouldn't have heard about cloud computing. Cloud computing is a loose term that describes anything that is hosted in data centers and accessed via the internet. It is normally associated with developers who draw clouds in diagrams indicating where services or how systems communicate with each other. Cloud computing also incorporates such well-known trends as Web 2.0 and Software as a Service (SaaS) and more recently Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). Its aim is to change the way we compute, moving from traditional desktop and on-premises servers to services and resources that are hosted in the cloud.  Benefits of Cloud Computing  There are clearly benefits in building applications using cloud computing, some of which are listed here:  Zero up- front investment:  Delivering a large-scale system costs a fortune in both time and money. Often IT departments are split into hardware/network and software services. The hardware team provisions servers and so forth under the requirements of the software team. Often the hardware team has a different budget that requires approval. Although hardware and software management are two separate disciplines, sometimes what happens is developers are given the task to estimate CPU cycles, disk space, and so forth, which ends up in underutilized servers.  Usage-based costing:  You pay for what you use, no more, no less, because you never actually own the server. This is similar to car leasing, where in the long run you get a new car every three years and maintenance is never a worry.  Potential for shrinking the processing time:  If processes are split over multiple machines, parallel processing is performed, which decreases processing time.  More office space:  Walk into most offices, and guaranteed you will find a medium- sized room dedicated to servers.  Efficient resource utilization:  The resource utilization is handed by a centralized cloud administrator who is in charge of deciding exactly the right amount of resources for a system. This takes the task away from local administrators, who have to regularly monitor these servers.  Just-in-time infrastructure:  If your system is a success and needs to scale to meet demand, this can cause further time delays or a slow- performing service. Cloud computing solves this because you can add more resources at any time.  Lower environmental impact:  If servers are centralized, potentially an environment initiative is more likely to succeed. As an example, if servers are placed in sunny or windy parts of the world, then why not use these resources to power those servers?  Lower costs:  Unfortunately, this is one point that administrators will not like. If you have people administrating your e-mail server and network along with support staff doing other cloud-based tasks, this workforce can be reduced. This saves costs, though it also reduces jobs.

Background In engineering, many times we measure several data points in an experiment, but then we need to predict a value that we have not measured which lies between two measured values, such as the problem statement above. If the relation between the measured parameters seems to be roughly linear, then we can use linear regression to find the relationship between those parameters. In the graph of the problem statement above, the relation seems to be roughly linear. Hence, we can apply linear regression to the above problem. Assuming y {y0, y1, …yn-1} has a linear relation with x {x0, x1, … xn-1}, we can say that: y = mx+b where m and b can be found with linear regression as follows: For the problem in this lab, using linear regression gives us the following line (in blue) compared to the measured curve (in red). As you can see, there is usually a difference between the measured values and the estimated (predicted) values. What linear regression does is to minimize those differences and still give us a straight line (blue). Other methods, such as non-linear regression, are also possible to achieve higher accuracy and better curve fitting. Requirements Your program should first print the table of the temperatures similar to the way it’s printed in the problem statement. It should then calculate the temperature at minute 1.5 and 4.3 and show the answers to the user.     I have read plenty of articles about multiplayer principles and I have basic client-server system set up. There is however one thing I am not clear on. When player enters input, it is sent to the server and steps back in time to check if what should have happened at the time of that input and it resimulates the world again. So far everything's clear. All articles took shooting as an example, because it is easy to explain and it is pretty straightforward, but I believe movement is more complicated. Imagine following situation: 2 players move towards each other. A------<------B Player A stops halfway towards the collision point, but there is lag spike so the command does not arrive on the server for a second or so. Current state of the world on the server (and on the other clients as well) at the time when input arrives is this: [1]: -------AB------- The command arrives and we go back in time and re-simulate the world, the result is this: [2]: ---AB----------- Player A sees situation [2] which is correct, but the player is suddenly teleported from the position in [1] (center) to the position in [2]. Is this how this is supposed to work? Point of the client prediction is to give lagged player feeling that everything is smooth, not to ruin experience for other players. Alternative is to discard timestamp on the player's input and handle it when it arrives on the server without going back in time. This, however, creates even more severe problems for lagged player (even if he is lagging just a bit)

    If I run a query on the Google Analytics API and set the dimension to ga:pagePathLevel1 and the metric to ga:avgTimeOnPage, I get results like this: { pagePathLevel1: /about, avgTimeOnPage: 28 }, { pagePathLevel1: /contact, avgTimeOnPage: 10 } I'm not completely sure how to interpret this. Is the value of avgTimeOnPage the average time spent by any user on all pages that match that path? Or is 28 seconds the average time spent by any user on any single page that matches that path? I'm looking for the average time spent across all pages matching that path, but the time estimates look shorter than I'd expect. I hope that question makes sense! Please tell me if it doesn't.

    Many of my TODO items in Emacs org-mode have a DEADLINE defined in the future (e. g. Friday) and are at the same time SCHEDULED today so that I already know I have to start working on this task. Then, this task will appear twice in my agenda. That's not nice but not necessarily a problem yet, but if then the task has assigned a time estimate for its duration and I go to column view with C-C C-X C-C to see how much time my tasks today will need, the time estimate for this task is counted twice, so e. g. if the time effort estimate is 2 hours, I'll have 4 hours in my daily agenda, as the item appears as well as scheduled today (or in the past) as also with its deadline in 3 days. How can I avoid counting an item twice?

    We are doing a big redesign work on our website, and at least 50% of the website folders will be moved to new places with different names (i.e. many URL will be changed). Sure, Google will need some time to index new pages and we expect our SERP positions will be not so good as they are now for some time. We also have an old idea to remove www from our domain name. It seems, it's the right time to do these two works together with publishing the website with updated contents. Or is it better from SEO perspective first publish the new contents, and only after some time, when our SERP positions will return to prior results, tell Google that the domain name without www is our preferred domain name?

  • How can I better manage far-reaching changes in my code?

    In my work (writing scientific software in C++), I often get asked by the people who use the software to get their work done to add some functionality or change the way things are done and organized right now. Most of the time this is just a matter of adding a new class or a function and applying some glue to do the job, but from time to time, a seemingly simple change turns out to have far-reaching consequences that require me to redesign a substantial amount of existing code, which takes a lot of time and effort, and is difficult to evaluate in terms of time required. I don't think it has as much to do with inter-dependence of modules, as with changing requirements (admittedly, on a smaller scale). To provide an example, I was thinking about the recently-added multi-user functionality in Android. I don't know whether they planned to introduce it from the very beginning, but assuming they didn't, it seems hard to predict all the areas that will be affected by the change (apps preferences, themes, need to store account info somehow, etc...?), even though the concept seems simple enough, and the code is well-organized. How do you deal with such situations? Do you just jump in to code and then sort out the cruft later like I do? Or do you do a detailed analysis beforehand of what will be affected, what needs to be updated and how, and what has to be rewritten? If so, what tools (if any) and approaches do you use?

    I'm currently working at a quite big Android project (a social network, you can see it here if is useful to answer the question). We decided to restyle the whole app, changing all the UI design. The code I actually have is complex, there are many controllers, and it's a little messy too. Is it "better" in terms of time and code cleanliness to take one controller per time, and rewrite it entirely, or to modify one controller per time? The layout change entirely anyway, so for that I know I've to restart from scratch. Maybe it could seem a stupid question, but with the "time" variable I really can't see the best way.

    For the last 4 months, I've working tirelessly on a project with my partner, who is a super programmer. He did 100% of the whole mechanism that makes our site work. My job is to take care of the cosmetic aspects of the site ... thus I should say I am good enough at CSS and html. However, since we are using Drupal to build our site, from time to time, I need his help in order to figure out how to do the customization. Sometimes, I got frustrated. I know that as a partner, I should know a little bit on how to program. However, during the crunch time when you have to deliver lightning fast (we have our site built from scratch to finish in 4 weeks ... and you are all welcome to come join the fun! It's a site for programmers!) there is no time to learn from the basics. All I can do is to pick up whatever I need at the moment. Now the site is launched, I am thinking it should be time to do some learning. So, where should I start? My partner always said I need to start with Python. What's your take on this? Thanks.

  • A programmer who doesn't get to program - where to turn? [closed]

    I'm in my mid 20's, and have been working as a full time programmer / developer for the last ~6 years, with several years of part-time freelancing before this, and three straight years of freelancing in the middle of this short career. I work mostly with PHP and the Drupal framework. By and large, I focus on programming custom pieces of functionality; these, of course, vary greatly from project to project. I've got years of solid experience with OOP (have done some Java & C# years ago, too) including intensive experience with front-end development, and even some design work. I've lead small teams (2-4 people) of developers. And of course, given the large amount of freelancing, I've got decent project- & client-management skills. My problem is staying motivated at any place of employment. In the time mentioned I've worked (full-time) at six local companies. The longest I've stayed at any company was just over a year. I find that I'll get hired and be very excited and motivated for the first few months, but the work quickly gets "stale." By that I mean that the interesting components (ie. the programming) get done, and the rest of the work turns into boring cleanup (move a button, add text, change colours, add a field). I don't get challenged, and I don't feel like I'm learning anything new. This happens repeatedly time and time again, and I always end up leaving for either a new opportunity, or to freelance. I'm wondering if perhaps I've painted myself into a corner with the rather niche work market (although with very high demand and good compensation) and need to explore other career choices. Another possibility is that I may be choosing the wrong places of employment, mostly small agencies, and need to look into working for a larger, more established firm. I find programming, writing code, and architecting solutions very rewarding. When I'm working on an interesting problem I lose all sense of time and 14-16 hours can fly by like minutes. I get the same exciting feeling when I'm doing high-level planning of a complex system, breaking up the work and figuring out how everything will tie-in together. I absolutely hate doing small, "stupid" changes that pose no challenge, yet seem to make up more and more of my work. I want to find a workplace where I will get to work on such tasks, be challenged, and improve in all areas of product development. This maybe a programming job, management, architecture of desktop apps, or may be managing a taco stand on a beach in Mexico - I don't know, and I need some advice and real-world feedback. What are some job areas worth exploring? The requirements are fairly simple: working with computers interacting with others challenging decent pay (I'm making just short of 90k / year with a month of vacation & some benefits, and would like to stay in this range, but am willing to take a temporary cut in pay for a more interesting position) Any advice would be much appreciated!

    I have a GUI game, which is driven by user every time it clicks the mouse. Every time user clicks a square on a board, the board state is updated (we re-compute the score, the player to make next move and legal movements it can make) and repainted. Both mouse click, state recomputation and painting are handled in the GUI thread. Now, suppose that I want to train AI to play without GUI. That is, game engine should consume next move by simply calling AI's makeMove function in one thread. This would allow to play millions of games per second automatically. GUI may just screenshot some arbitrary states time after time. How do you switch to this strategy?

  • Most simple way to do holiday calculation?

    I want to make a little free calendar program to help me and others calculate how much time we have got left in a project. I mean real working time, not just time. Time in a raw form is not saying much. Typically when my boss tells me that I have time until 05-05-2011 it doesn't tell me really how much time I have to do my job. You know...so many things stop me from work: A) beeing at home, not at work (so called "free time" or "spare time"). That is in my case I work exactly 8 hours a day and then the cleaning ladies throw me out of the office with their incredible loud industrial vacuum cleaners every evening (my boss accepts that as an excuse to go home in time, regularly). B) weekends, or more precisely saturdays and sundays C) official holiday rescuing me from having to go to work. what I want to do is make a little utility which tells me how many working hours I really have in a given time period. The first two things A and B are pretty easy to implement. But the last thing C scares my pants off. Holidays. OOOHHH man. You know what that means. Chaos. Pure chaos. The huge question is: HOW TO CALCULATE HOLIDAYS?! Since I want my program to be useful for anyone anywhere in the world, I can't just hardcode all holidays for my little town. So which options do I have? I) I could hand-craft downloadable lists of holidays. Users search them within the application and download them from an webserver. Or I ship all of them in the package. But I would get very, very old if I tried that by myself for every country, state and town. II) I make an initial data sheet with holidays for my town, and don't care about the rest. However, I make that sheet with an how-to public, so that everyone who feels like beeing very nice can provide holiday data for his country / region / whatever. Those are made public on a webserver and everyone can get the data packages he/she needs for the app. III) ? I care a lot about usability. I don't want to make an ugly linux hack style hard to use app that only computer freaks can use. So you need to tell me more about holiday science. I was never really clever at this. I assume every single country in the world has it's own set of holidays. In every country there may be several states. For example the US has some, and Germany has also some states. Holidays vary from state to state. But I know from an good programmer he told me never assume anything. So the questions about holiday science are: Which categories do I need to make holiday-data-packs searchable? A guy from India should find quickly his holiday data pack, and a guy from Sillicon Valley should find his pack as equally fast. It makes most sense to me to filter for COUNTRY STATE WHATEVER. Like a drill-down-search. Did I miss something? What would be the best data format to hold holiday information? A holiday has a start and end date and a name. That should be enough. Would I put all this stuff in thousands of XML files? How would you go about this? Any hint / help is highly welcome! Thanks to everyone!

    Given: vm - a WinXPsp3 virtual machine hosted by a Win7sp1 physical machine alice is the user on vm srv - a Win2008R2sp1 server bob is the user on srv quake - a linux server mark is the user on quake Both vm and srv have the same new installation of cygwin (1.7.9) and openssh. I have deleted the Tunnel adapters to keep the output minimal. If anyone thinks they matter, do tell so and I will post them as well. In addition ping output is given to show that DNS is correct.     I'm getting an "Error from Debugger: Error launching remote program: security policy error" when I try to run my app on my ipod touch. The provisions look in order, and the app builds to my iphone 3gs just fine. The app used to build just fine to my ipod touch, so I'm flustered what could have changed and wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what might be causing this issue. The build logs are below.   • Problem upgrading eclipse rcp app from 3.3 to 3.5 on Mac OS

    I previously had an eclipse rcp app based on eclipse 3.3 pugins deployed on both windows and mac OS X 10.4. i'm now trying to port the app to java 1.6 and eclipse 3.5 (Build id: 20100218-1602) plugins on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). I can launch the product from eclipse 3.5 on windows but not on Mac OS X. I have the 64bit cocoa eclipse IDE and java 6. In the launch configuration I set runtime JRE to JVM 1.6.0 and added required plugins. The plugins validate and everything else looks similar to windows configuration where it works, but when I launch i only get the following two lines in the console: 2010-03-16 13:29:32.742 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Enabled 2010-03-16 13:29:32.744 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Setting timeout for SWT to 0.100000 and then the program appears to just hang indefinitely.
