  • Web application date time localization best practice at 201x

    Hi all, I have worked for various web projects but correct date time localization have not been done and considered throroughly so I want to ask this very typical problem here and I want to hear comments from expert in this problem What is the correct strategy for storing a date/time value from client from server As I understand, because of locale and timezone so we have to do the conversion, I have heard about GMT or UTC time and after do some search it seems that UTC is more accurate ? so we will convert from client time - UTC+0 when saving and when we read the value from server to client, we convert from server time back to client time again ? However, I see in some website, at the bottom have the sentence "All times are in UTC", "All times are in GMT" and also "All times are in your local time". So maybe not all the sites do the convertion back and forth ? And in that case the user has to manually do the date/time conversion ? How to display the date/time convenient to user based on his locale and region How to provide personalization on date/time value ? I had one time depends on vbscript to do the display and the format is read from windows regional and format settings automatically. But without vbscript how can we determine a date/time pattern for a user of a specific locale. Do we have to store a mapping between a locale and pattern somewhere and do the conversion at the server side ? Although date/time conversion is needed in most case, there's situation where only date matter for example if my birthday is 2 Feb 1980, it should be the same for all locale and no conversion should be done. How can we address this issue.

  • Best Practice - Validating Input In Simple GUI Application?

    I'm writing a GUI app with wxwidgets in C++ for one of my programming classes. We have to validate input and throw custom exceptions if it doesn't meet certain conditions. My question is, what is best practice when it comes to this? Should I write a seperate function that checks for errors, and have my event handler's call that function? Or should I do my error-checking in my event handlers? Or does it really matter? Thanks!

  • How should Application.Run() be called for the main presenter of a MVP WinForms app?

    I'm learning to apply MVP to a simple WinForms app (only one form) in C# and encountered an issue while creating the main presenter in static void Main(). Is it a good idea to expose a View from the Presenter in order to supply it as a parameter to Application.Run()? Currently, I've implemented an approach which allows me to not expose the View as a property of Presenter: static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); presenter.Start(); Application.Run(); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter: public void Start() { view.Start(); } public void Stop() { view.Stop(); } The Start and Stop methods in View (a Windows Form): public void Start() { this.Show(); } public void Stop() { // only way to close a message loop called // via Application.Run(); without a Form parameter Application.Exit(); } The Application.Exit() call seems like an inelegant way to close the Form (and the application). The other alternative would be to expose the View as a public property of the Presenter in order to call Application.Run() with a Form parameter. static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); Application.Run(presenter.View); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter remain the same.   • IntelliJ IDEA :: Deploy android application onto Samsung S5300

    I'm trying to deploy the app onto my phone (Samsung S5300) I created project in IDEA and it works well in Android emulator. Now I want to deploy it onto my phone. I did the following: plugged USB enabled development mode and checked all options (USB, location etc) on the phone launched the same configuration but specified the device from the plugged devide (choose a running device) nothing happened, I don't see any errors neither in IDEA, not on the phone. What am I missing and how to fix the problem? The API SDK seems to be correct (2.3)

  • Lego-Style Cocoa Workflow Application

    Hi, I currently have to develop a system very similar to MIT's Scratch's UI. In case you don't know it, here a screenshot: http://kidconfidence.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/scratch1.png Basically you have bricks in the library on the left you can drop into the window on the right side. The problem I have is that I'm new to Cocoa and not sure what would be the best way to accomplish that. Because you can nest these bricks sometimes and other times stick them together I wonder if there is something that would help implementing that. I recognize this is not a very common interface that there are probably no implementations of that around, but maybe there are helpers for parts of this. Regards, Armin

  • Preferred way of application initialization

    Do you guys have your own little framework for project startups ? I mean, every time one needs to do the same things at the beginning: Context initialization - ideally after arguments are processed. Sometimes without interactive user input, sometimes with input reader. Sometimes we need to load properties, sometimes not. Then we need to get a class out of context and run its method. Programming....programming until writing shell script to place everything on classpath. It's true that it differs according to the actual needs. But it seems to me, that I'm doing always almost the same, again and again from the scratch. Sometimes I realize that I'm postponing my work just because I don't want to do these annoying startups. It would be great if there was some kind of universal Main class doing reflection to specified bean, context initialization, argument parsing, interactive user input reading and have the programmer do the important things...All setup might be done via spring configuration. I think I'll have to do it by myself. I'd appreciate your ideas

    Hi, I'm working on a online quiz client where we use a dedicated custom-made linux distro which contains only the quiz client software along with text editors and other utility software. When the user has started the quiz, I want to prevent him/her from minimizing the window/closing it/switching to the desktop or other windows. The quizzes can be attempted using only the mouse, so I need the keyboard to be completed disabled for the period of the quiz. How could I do this, using Qt or Mono?     Hi, The company I am working now has developed a Rule-based Expert System. It is a web-based system and supports Flow Chart, Decision Table, Fuzzy Rules and Forward Chaining Rules. It is something like iLog but less complex and powerful. However, one serious problem we are facing now is that we have NO CUSTOMER so far. We have spent 4 yrs to develop that product. Because my company is a start-up and has no reference, no one is confident in our product. Without feedback, we cannot improve our product. I am wondering if we should change our product into SAAS and make it free for people to try, or it has NO MARKET at all. (I will lose my job then..) Please give me some suggestions. Many Thanks!

    Hi Guyz, i want to integrate maps using map kit in iphone, and i am successful at that, but now the problem which i am facing is i have 2 locations coordinates, Location1 and Location2, now i want those two points to be shown on map but i want that they appear on the screen both at 1 time, means if they are very far then the zoom level goes to that point and show those two points on the map, if they are near to each other then zoom level shows from that angel (i mean very near). now i know that using longitude delta and latitude delta i can fix this problem, but i cant find a way to make it dynamic, so that i dont have to hardcode the delta value Any Help appreciated.     I'm using wxWidgets to write cross-plafrom applications. In one of applications I need to be able to load data from Microsoft Excel (.xls) files, but I need this to work on Linux as well, so I assume I cannot use OLE or whatever technology is available on Windows. I see that there are many open source programs that can read excel files (OpenOffice, KOffice, etc.), so I wonder if there is some library that I could use? Excel files it needs to support are very simple, straight tabular data. I don't need to extract any formatting except column/row position and the data itself.

I know using @media print in CSS, PDF based solution or iTextSharp but they are not really easy (except @media print) but alignment is little tricky if receipt contains barcodes or if I have to format for A5 etc., Is there anything new in HTML5 which will support this?     Greetings Guys.. Iam 32 years old, I graduated from university in 2005 but from that time I didnt work in my career as a developer,and I dont have any experience in that major. My current career is software testing, but actually iam not satisfied in that job since i dont see any future for it and i dont know its path (to where will I arrive). Now i decided to take extra cources in VB.net, asp.net since I want to change my career to become webdeveloper. But 1 thing that always desturb me is that I feel that time is passed iam iam too old to become web developer.
