Big, appreciative thanks for everyone's collective questioning and answering here and at stackoverflow, it's helped me quite a lot over the time I've been learning answers through these sites! I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

• Silverlight: how to modify the width of ListBox Items in response to user input?

  I have a simple Silverlight 3 UserControl whose width increases or decreases based on user input. The controls become more wide or more narrow as desired, except for the ListBox items. The ListBox Items grow horizontally to fit their content regardless of HorizontalContentAlignment being set to 'Stretch'. Should I be able to set a property on ListBox.ItemContainerStyle to tell it to widen/narrow with the parent ListBox? There needs to be no horizontal scrolling within this Listbox. Or is there a way to specify the ItemTemplate's StackPanel width that can be modified at runtime? I have bound this to a StaticResource, but do not understand whether I should be able to change the resource value. Can I create and bind to a DependencyProperty of the UserControl itself? • How does one track down an error using the YII Framework?

• Visitor and templated virtual methods

  In a typical implementation of the Visitor pattern, the class must account for all variations (descendants) of the base class. There are many instances where the same method content in the visitor is applied to the different methods. A templated virtual method would be ideal in this case, but for now, this is not allowed. So, can templated methods be used to resolve virtual methods of the parent class? The implementation above is my suggestion for alerts when the derived visitor implementation hasn't implement an optional method. Is this legal by the C++ specification? (I don't trust when some says that it works with compiler XXX. This is a question against the general language.)

• Correct way to edit and update complex viewmodel objects using asp.net-mvc2 and entity framework

  I have a table in my database with a one to many relationship to another table: ParentObject ID Name Description ChildObject ID Name Description ParentObjectID AnotherObjectID The objects are mapped into Entity Framework and exposed through a data access class. Investigation on StackOverflow and generally googling led me to this blog post that seems to describe my problem: TryUpdateModel() does not correctly handle nested collections. Apparently, (and stepping through the debugger confirms this) it creates a new ChildObject instead of associating with the EF objects from my instantiated context. My hacky work around is this: if (viewModel.ChildObjects.Count > 0) { foreach (ChildObject modelChildObject in viewModel.ChildObjects) { ChildObject childToUpdate = ParentObject.ChildObject.Where(a => a.ID == modelChildObject.ID).First(); childToUpdate.Name = modelChildObject.Name; } } This seems to work fine. My question to you good folks: Is there correct way to do this? I tried following the suggestion for making a custom model binder per the blog link I posted above but it didn't work (there was an issue with reflection) and I needed to get something going ASAP. PS - I tried to cleanup the code to hide specific information, so beware I may have hosed something up. I mainly just want to know if other people have solved this problem. Thanks!

• Object hierarchy returned by WCF Service is different than expected

  Good Day Everyone... My understanding may be wrong, but I thought once you applied the correct attributes the DataContractSerializer would render fully-qualified instances back to the caller. The code runs and the objects return. But oddly enough, once I look at the returned objects I noticed the namespacing disappeared and the object-hierarchy being exposed through the (web applications) service reference seems to become "flat" (somehow). Now, I expect this from a web-service…but not through WFC. Of course, my understanding of what WFC can do may be wrong. ...please keep in mind I'm still experimenting with all this. So my questions are… Q: Can I do something within the WFC Service to force the namespacing to render through the (service reference) data client proxy? Q: Or perhaps, am I (merely) consuming the service incorrectly? Q: Is this even possible? DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost.Copy(DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost) So looking in the sourcecode: DirectoryPost postInLimbo = DirectoryPostFactory.Instance().GetDirectoryPost(LdapConfigReader.Instance().GetConfigValue("LimboDN"), idGenPerson.ID.UserId); if (postInLimbo != null) newPost.Copy(postInLimbo); This code is looking for another post in OU=limbo with the same UserId and if it finds one it copies the attributes to the new post. In this case it does and it fails with personalprescriptioncode. I've looked in Active Directory under OU=Limbo and the post exist there with the attribute personalprescriptioncode=31243. Question 1: Why does it display no data for some of the PARAMETERS and LOCALS? Is it the GC who has cleaned up before the memorydump had been created. Question 2: Is there anymore i can do to get to the solution to this problem?

  Hi, I'm porting a medium-sized CRUD application from .Net to Qt and I'm looking for a pattern for creating persistence classes. Unfortunately, in my case they provide too abstract an interface. I need at least transactions support and control over individual commits which QSqlTableModel doesn't provide. Could you give me some hints about solving this problem using Qt or point me to some reference materials? Update: Based on Harald's clues I've implemented a solution that is quite similar to the .Net classes above. Now I have two classes. My DAO classes accept both an EntityManager and EntityManagerFactory via the @PersistenceContext attribute, and they work find if I load them up and run them without the @ContextConfiguration attribute (i.e. if I just use the XmlApplcationContext to load the DAO and the EntityManagerFactory directly in setUp ()). • How to parse HTML with TouchXML or some other alternative.

  Hi, I'm trying to parse the HTML presented below with TouchXML but it keeps crashing when I try to extract certain attributes. I'm totally new to the parser world so I apologize for being a complete idiot. I need help to parse this HTML. What I'm trying to accomplish is to parse each attribute and value or what not and copy them to a string. I've been trying to find a good parser to parse HTML and I believe TouchXML is the best I've seen because of Tidy. Speaking of Tidy, How could I run this HTML through Tidy first then parse it? I'm not sure how to do this. Here is the code that I have so far that doesn't work due to it's not pulling everything I need from the HTML. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.   Is there a guide on the metrics required to obtain a certain Windows Experience Index? A Microsoft guy said in January 2009: On the matter of transparency, it is indeed our plan to disclose in great detail how the scores are calculated, what the tests attempt to measure, why, and how they map to realistic scenarios and usage patterns. Has that amount of transparency happened? Is there a technet article somewhere? If my score was limited by my Memory subscore of 5.9. A nieve person would suggest: Buy a faster RAM Which is wrong of course. From the Windows help: If your computer has a 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) and 4 gigabytes (GB) or less random access memory (RAM), then the Memory (RAM) subscore for your computer will have a maximum of 5.9. You can buy the fastest, overclocked, liquid-cooled, DDR5 RAM on the planet; you'll still have a maximum Memory subscore of 5.9. So in general the knee-jerk advice "buy better stuff" is not helpful. What i am looking for is attributes required to achieve a certain score, or move beyond a current limitation. • Creating a menu using xslt for Umbraco

  I've created a menu in umbraco using XSLT. The menu is using the usual ul and li elements and I'm displaying only the first level of the menu. The aim is to create a menu that expands to show the sub menu when I click a parent node (in the top level). I am after the xslt I would need to expose the sub menu when clicked. I think I would need to make use of ancestor-or-self to detect the current menu and parent menu and display them and also the $currentPage variable. • Writing more efficient xquery code (avoiding redundant iteration)

  Here's a simplified version of a problem I'm working on: I have a bunch of xml data that encodes information about people. Each person is uniquely identified by an 'id' attribute, but they may go by many names. For example, in one document, I might find <person id=1>Paul Mcartney</person> <person id=2>Ringo Starr</person> And in another I might find: <person id=1>Sir Paul McCartney</person> <person id=2>Richard Starkey</person> I want to use xquery to produce a new document that lists every name associated with a given id. i.e.: <person id=1> <name>Paul McCartney</name> <name>Sir Paul McCartney</name> <name>James Paul McCartney</name> </person> <person id=2> ... </person> The way I'm doing this now in xquery is something like this (pseudocode-esque): let $ids := distinct-terms( [all the id attributes on people] ) for $id in $ids return <person id={$id}> { for $unique-name in distinct-values ( for $name in ( [all names] ) where $name/@id=$id return $name ) return <name>{$unique-name}</name> } </person> The problem is that this is really slow. I imagine the bottleneck is the innermost loop, which executes once for every id (of which there are about 1200). I'm dealing with a fair bit of data (300 MB, spread over about 800 xml files), so even a single execution of the query in the inner loop takes about 12 seconds, which means that repeating it 1200 times will take about 4 hours (which might be optimistic - the process has been running for 3 hours so far). Not only is it slow, it's using a whole lot of virtual memory. I'm using Saxon, and I had to set java's maximum heap size to 10 GB (!) to avoid getting out of memory errors, and it's currently using 6 GB of physical memory. So here's how I'd really like to do this (in Pythonic pseudocode): persons = {} for id in ids: person[id] = set() for person in all_the_people_in_my_xml_document: persons[person.id].add(person.name) There, I just did it in linear time, with only one sweep of the xml document. Now, is there some way to do something similar in xquery? Surely if I can imagine it, a reasonable programming language should be able to do it (he said quixotically). The problem, I suppose, is that unlike Python, xquery doesn't (as far as I know) have anything like an associative array. Is there some clever way around this? Failing that, is there something better than xquery that I might use to accomplish my goal? Because really, the computational resources I'm throwing at this relatively simple problem are kind of ridiculous.

I'm new to Python but figured this would be a good exercise to try a new language. My main loop isn't parsing the CSS as I thought it would. I populate a list with selectors parsed from the CSS files to return the CSS rules in order. • What is "elegant" code?

  I see a lot of lip service and talk about the most "elegant" way to do this or that. I think if you spend enough time programming you begin to obtain a sort of intuitive feel for what it is we call "elegance". But I'm curious. Even if we can look at a bit of code, and say instinctively "That's elegant", or "That's messy", I wonder if any of us really understands what that means. Is there a precise definition for this "elegance" we keep referring to? If there is, what is it? Now, what I mean by a precise definition, is a series of statements which can be used to derive questions about a peice of code, or a program as a whole, and determine objectively, or as objectively as possible, whether that code is "elegant" or not. May I assert, that perhaps no such definition exists, and it's all just personal preference. In this case, I ask you a slightly different question: Is there a better word for "elegance", or a better set of attributes to use for judging code quality that is perhaps more objective than merely appealing to individual intuition and taste? Perhaps code quality is a matter of taste, and the answer to both of my questions is "no". But I can't help but feel that we could be doing better than just expressing wishy washy feelings about our code quality. For example, user interface design is something that to a broad range of people looks for all the world like a field of study that oughtta be 100% subjective matter of taste. But this is shockingly and brutally not the case, and there are in fact many objective measures that can be applied to a user interface to determine its quality. A series of tests could be written to give a definitive and repeatable score to user interface quality. (See GOMS, for instance). Now, okay. is Elegance simply "code quality" or is it something more? Is it something that can be measured? Or is it a matter of taste? Does our profession have room for taste? Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions altogether. Help me out here. Bonus Round If there is such a thing as elegance in code, and that concept is useful, do you think that justifies classifying the field of programming as an "Art" capital A, or merely a "craft". Or is it just an engineering field populated by a bunch of wishful thinking humans? Consider this question in the light of your thoughts about the elegance question. Please note that there is a distinction between code which is considered "art" in itself, and code that was written merely in the service of creating an artful program. When I ask this question, I ask if the code itself justifies calling programming an art. • Asp.Net Export to Excel - Japanese Characters

  I am currently using Visual Studio 2008 for my ASP .NET application. I am trying to Export some reports with Japanese Characters to Excel via the Response object. When I try to Export, all the Japanese characters looks garbled. It works fine with Chinese Characters. Here is what I tried: I tried Installed Japanese Language Pack / Encoding to UTF-8 / UTF-7 / Shift-JIS / Globalization (Web.Config) .. but no luck. Any Ideas how this can be fixed ? • Can someone code review my small SDL app? Want to make sure I didn't make any beginner mistakes

  In an effort to teach myself the SDL library (hence my stack overflow handle :) ) I wanted to try my hand at a side-scroller. My code is complete but I want some feedback (mostly because I have an atrocious amount of if and else statements for what seems like some simple logic). My "program" is a c++ side-scroller where you move a single sprite across the screen. No jumping, bad guys, guns, scores, levels or anything. I wanted to use this as a base to build up upon. So I figured if my base is wrong I could end up with some pretty bad future apps. It's also multi-threaded. Next up on this I would like to make the person sprite animated (so it looks like he's walking rather than sliding) as well as make the person go faster when the arrow buttons are held down longer). • MIME "Content-Type" folding and parameter question regarding RFCs?

  Hello, I'm trying to implement a basic MIME parser for the multipart/related in C++/Qt. So far I've been writing some basic parser code for headers, and I'm reading the RFCs to get an idea how to do everything as close to the specification as possible. Unfortunately there is a part in the RFC that confuses me a bit: From RFC882 Section 3.1.1: Each header field can be viewed as a single, logical line of ASCII characters, comprising a field-name and a field-body. For convenience, the field-body portion of this conceptual entity can be split into a multiple-line representation; this is called "folding". The general rule is that wherever there may be linear-white-space (NOT simply LWSP-chars), a CRLF immediately followed by AT LEAST one LWSP-char may instead be inserted. Thus, the single line Alright, so I simply parse a header field and if a CRLF follows with linear whitespace, I simply concat those in a useful manner to result in a single header line. Let's proceed... From RFC2045 Section 5.1: In the Augmented BNF notation of RFC 822, a Content-Type header field value is defined as follows: content := "Content-Type" ":" type "/" subtype *(";" parameter) ; Matching of media type and subtype ; is ALWAYS case-insensitive. [...] parameter := attribute "=" value attribute := token ; Matching of attributes ; is ALWAYS case-insensitive. value := token / quoted-string token := 1*<any (US-ASCII) CHAR except SPACE, CTLs, or tspecials> Okay. So it seems if you want to specify a Content-Type header with parameters, simple do it like this: Content-Type: multipart/related; foo=bar; something=else ... and a folded version of the same header would look like this: Content-Type: multipart/related; foo=bar; something=else Correct? Good. As I kept reading the RFCs, I came across the following in RFC2387 Section 5.1 (Examples): Content-Type: Multipart/Related; boundary=example-1 start="<[email protected]>"; type="Application/X-FixedRecord" start-info="-o ps" --example-1 Content-Type: Application/X-FixedRecord Content-ID: <[email protected]> [data] --example-1 Content-Type: Application/octet-stream Content-Description: The fixed length records Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-ID: <[email protected]> [data] --example-1-- Hmm, this is odd. Do you see the Content-Type header? It has a number of parameters, but not all have a ";" as parameter delimiter. Maybe I just didn't read the RFCs correctly, but if my parser works strictly like the specification defines, the type and start-info parameters would result in a single string or worse, a parser error. Guys, what's your thought on this? Just a typo in the RFCs? Or did I miss something? Thanks!

• jquery-ui .draggable is not a function error

Two graphs should be displayed, both with draggable thin horizontal red lines. Re-open the options panel and de-select R50 Random Walk, now click Show/Refresh Graphs again, 1 graph is removed and the other updated; now re-select R50 Random Walk and click Show/Refresh, you will find the still checked R25 graph gets updated ok the above error occurs and i cant figure out why. Initially, when displaying the first 2 graphs it uses the same code and it works just fine.
