  When I tried to run the Ubuntu install disc i get a purple screen with some little images down the bottom, then a flashing cursor for a second and then the screen goes black like there is no in I have tried changing BIOS settings that supposedly interfere, different disk drives and trying to access the advanced menu all to no avail! All the answers for black screens require you to be able to get the menu which i cant! Help would be much appreciated!

• Triple monitor setup in linux

  I'm hoping there are some xorg gurus out there. I'm trying to get a three monitor setup working in linux. I have 2 lcd monitors and a tv, all different resolutions. I'm using 2 video cards; a 9800 GTX and 7900Gt. I've seen a lot of different posts about people trying to make this work, and in every case, they either gave up, or Xinerama magically solved all their problems. Basically, my main problem is that I cannot get Xinerama to work. Every time I turn it on in the options, my machine gets stuck in a neverending boot cycle. If I disable Xinerama, I just have three Xorg screens, but I can't drag windows from one to the other. I can get the 2 lcds on Twinview, and the tv on a separate Xorg screen no problem. But I don't really like this solution. I'd rather have them all on separate screens and stitch them together with Xinerama. Has anyone done this? Here's my xorg.conf for reference. p.s. This took me all of 30 seconds to set up in Windows XP! p.s.s. I've seen somewhere that maybe randr can solve my problems? But I'm not quite sure how? • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • Cannot exit X server, restart, shutdown or drop to tty when VGA monitor active

  I have a strange problem. If I connect an external VGA monitor to my laptop, exiting the X environment in any way crashes the computer. For example, say I am working with my two monitors (the laptop's and one connected to my VGA port) active. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F Key should take me down to a tty. What actually happens is that the VGA screen goes blank, as you would expect, but the laptop screen, although still on, shows nothing. I know the screen is on because it is slightly more illuminated than when it is off. When in this state, I can do nothing to regain access to the machine. I have tried: Ctrl+F Key (and even Ctrl+Alt+F Key, just in case) combinations and none seem to have any effect. Ctrl+Alt+Del : Nothing Magic SysRq key: Nothing Blindly typing my username and password and trying to reboot/shutdown or restart GDM or MDM: Nothing The only thing that works is a hard reset. The exact same behavior occurs when kiling the X server through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, rebooting or shutdown. There is no difference if I reboot/shutdown/log out using the WM's graphical menu or if I use the shutdown or rebootcommands. It is also not WM-dependent. I have the same problem using Cinnamon, Gnome 3, MATE and xfce4. It is, however, VGA dependent. I have tried connecting another VGA monitor and have the same problem. I do not, however, have this problem if a screen is connected to the DisplayPort. It is, therefore, a VGA specific issue. To make things even stranger, this only occurs when both screens are active. If either the laptop screen or the VGA monitor is inactive the problem goes away. Finally, this problem arose when I installed the latest Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). It did not occur with the previous release of LMDE. I am not sure what has changed since I used the same kernel version in both releases (I had upgraded the kernel while on the previous release) and, I think, the same nvidia drivers. Oh, and yes, I have updated the nvidia driver. • kvm and qemu host: Is there a limit for max CPUs (Ubuntu 10.04)?

  Today we encountered a really strange behaviour on two identical kvm and qemu hosts. The host systems each have 4 x 10 Cores, which means that 40 physical cores are displayed as 80 within the operating system (Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64 Bit). We started a Windows 2003 32 Bit VM (1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, we changed those values multiple times) on one of the nodes and noticed that it took 15 minutes until the boot process began. During those 15 minutes, a black screen is shown and nothing happens. libvirt and the host system show that the qemu-kvm process for the guest is almost idling. stracing this process only shows some FUTEX entries, but nothing special. After those 15 minutes, the Windows VM suddenly starts booting and the Windows logo occurs. After a few seconds, the VM is ready to be used. The VM itself is very performant, so this is no performance issue. We tried to pin the CPUs with the virsh and taskset tools, but this only made things worse. When we boot the Windows VM with a Linux Live CD there is also a black screen for several minutes, but not as long as 15. When booting another VM on this host (Ubuntu 10.04) it also has the black screen problem, and also here the black screen is only shown for 2-3 minutes (instead of 15). So, summerinzing this: Each guest on each of those identical nodes suffers from idling a few minutes after being started. After a few minutes, the boot process suddenly starts. We have observed that the idling time happens right after the bios of the guest was initialized. One of our employees had the idea to limit the amount of CPUs with maxcpus=40 (because of 40 physical cores existing) within Grub (kernel parameter) and suddenly the "black-screen-idling"-behaviour disappeared. Searching the KVM and Qemu mailing lists, the internet, forums, serverfault and other various sites for known bugs etc. showed no useful results. Even asking in the dev IRC channels brought no new ideas. The people there recommend us to use CPU pinning, but as stated before it didn't help. My question is now: Is there a sort of limit of CPUs for a qemu or kvm host system? Browsing the source code of those two tools showed that KVM would send a warning if your host has more than 255 CPUs. But we are not even scratching on that limit. • Windows 7 Administrator HomeUsers Account

  I'm trying to login to my Windows 7 PC from another PC so that I can transfer files to the Windows 7 PC. I've just installed Visual Studio 2008 on my new PC, and I wan't to transfer all of my work from my old machine to my new one. When I first set up a user on the Windows 7 PC after a reformat, the account created had a Group field that read "HomeUsers; Administrators" when viewing it from the User Accounts screen. You get to this screen by typing "netplwiz" in the search field of the Start Menu. I changed the Group of this account to Administrators before I realized that it was assigned to two Groups -- "HomeUsers; Administrators" as I mentioned above. I was trying to make sure that it was an Administrator account so I didn't have to type in a password everytime I wanted to install software. I can use this computer normally without being asked for an administrator password all the time when I want to install new software, but I can't log in to this PC from another PC because I don't have an account that has a Group of "HomeUsers". I should have left the account alone; everything would've been fine. But there doesn't seem to be a way to assign it to two groups after the initial assignment that take place automatically when you are setting up your computer for the first time. If you assign "HomeUsers" to the account, the Group field on the User Accounts screen will just read "HomeUsers". If you assign "Administrators" to the account, the Group field on the User Accounts screen will just read "Administrators". There's no way to make it read "HomeUsers; Administrators" again. If you don't have at least one account that is a "HomeUsers" account, you cannot log in to the PC from another PC on the network. If you don't have an account that is an "Administrators" account, you cannot install software on your machine without being asked for an Administrator password all the time, which is very annoying. I want an account on my Windows 7 PC that I can use to install software without being asked for a password AND that I can log into from another PC on the network to transfer files. If I could make the Group field read "HomeUsers; Administrators" of my primary account on the Windows 7 PC when I go to the User Accounts screen by typing "netplwiz" in the search field of the Start Menu, my primary account would do what I want it to do. Does anybody know how to make an account in Windows 7 a "HomeUsers" account AND an "Administrators" account? As I said before, Windows 7 does this for you automatically when you first set up your computer. But if you change it inadvertently, there is no way to change it back. • Triple monitor setup in linux

  I'm hoping there are some xorg gurus out there. I'm trying to get a three monitor setup working in linux. I have 2 lcd monitors and a tv, all different resolutions. I'm using 2 video cards; a 9800 GTX and 7900Gt. I've seen a lot of different posts about people trying to make this work, and in every case, they either gave up, or Xinerama magically solved all their problems. Basically, my main problem is that I cannot get Xinerama to work. Every time I turn it on in the options, my machine gets stuck in a neverending boot cycle. If I disable Xinerama, I just have three Xorg screens, but I can't drag windows from one to the other. I can get the 2 lcds on Twinview, and the tv on a separate Xorg screen no problem. But I don't really like this solution. I'd rather have them all on separate screens and stitch them together with Xinerama. Has anyone done this? Here's my xorg.conf for reference. p.s. This took me all of 30 seconds to set up in Windows XP! p.s.s. I've seen somewhere that maybe randr can solve my problems? But I'm not quite sure how?   I'm trying to implement my own emoji icon keyboard and have some problems. I'm trying to draw emoji icons at the same size as on native iOS emoji keyboard, but when doing simple drawing (standard unicode characters like "\ue415") icons always appear at original size. When trying to increase the font - emoji icons stay of the same size. When applying CGAffineTransform for scaling - drawn icons are bigger, but pixelated and blurred. How should I go about drawing emoji icons bigger, but sharper?

  I realize that ItemFocusIn is somehow only applicable to editable datagrids in flex, nevertheless I want to fire an event anytime the user selects a new row in a non-editable datagrid. I have successfully used the CLICK event, but this event is not fired when the user uses the keyboard to select a different row in the datagrid. What do I have to do to cause an event to fire whenever the currently highlighted row in the datagrid changes, regardless of weather it was changed by the mouse or by the keyboard?

The iPhone doesn't provides a keyboard that's specific for this purpose - only a number pad and a keyboard with numbers and symbols.   I have a ListView with several columns, let's say column A,B,C,D in that order, sorted by column A. In long lists I could press a letter on my keyboard and scroll down to the first item in column A that begins with the letter pressed. A new column has been inserted at the beginning, yet I still want to be able to press a letter on my keyboard and scroll according to the values in column A which is now the second column. How can I set the focus back to column A without making it the first column?

• Make a Button Appear Focused When Not

  The Find and Replace dialog in Visual Studio is a perfect example of what im trying to accomplish. Notice how the "Find what" text field has keyboard focus but the "Find Next" button appears bluish as if it has keyboard focus also even though it does not. How can I accomplish this myself? I've tried messing with FocusManager and Focus Scopes without much luck. I suspect i may be barking up the wrong tree? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks
