• How to manage maintenance/bug-fix branches in Subversion when setup projects need to be built?

  We have a suite of related products written in VB6, with some C# and VB.NET projects, and all the source is kept in a single Subversion repository. We haven't been using branches in Subversion (although we do tag releases now), and simply do all development in trunk, creating new releases when the trunk is stable enough. This causes no end of grief when we release a new version, issues are found with it, and we have already begun working on new features or major changes to the trunk. In the past, we would address this in one of two ways, depending on the severity of the issues and how stable we thought the trunk was: Hurry to stabilize the trunk, fix the issues, and then release a maintenance update based on the HEAD revision, but this had the side effect of releases that fixed the bugs but introduced new issues because of half-finished features or bugfixes that were in trunk. Make customers wait until the next official release, which is usually a few months. We want to change our policies to better deal with this situation. I was considering creating a "maintenance branch" in Subversion whenever I tag an official release. Then, new development would continue in trunk, and I can periodically merge specific fixes from trunk into the maintenance branch, and create a maintenance release when enough fixes are accumulated, while we continue to work on the next major update in parallel. I know we could also have a more stable trunk and create a branch for new updates instead, but keeping current development in trunk seems simpler to me. The major problem is that while we can easily branch the source code from a release tag and recompile it to get the binaries for that release, I'm not sure how to handle the setup and installer projects. We use QSetup to create all of our setup programs, and right now when we need to modify a setup project, we just edit the project file in-place (all the setup projects and any dependencies that we don't compile ourselves are stored on a separate server, and we make sure to always compile the setup projects on that machine only). However, since we may add or remove files to the setup as our code changes, there is no guarantee that today's setup projects will work with yesterday's source code. I was going to put all the QSetup projects in Subversion to deal with this, but I see some problems with this approach. I want the creation of setup programs to be as automated as possible, and at the very least, I want a separate build machine where I can build the release that I want (grabbing the code from Subversion first), grab the setup project for that release from Subversion, recompile the setup, and then copy the setup to another place on the network for QA testing and eventual release to customers. However, when someone needs to change a setup project (to add a new dependency that trunk now requires or to make other changes), there is a problem. If they treat it like a source file and check it out on their own machine to edit it, they won't be able to add files to the project unless they first copy the files they need to add to the build machine (so they are available to other developers), then copy all the other dependencies from the build machine to their machine, making sure to match the folder structure exactly. The issue here is that QSetup uses absolute paths for any files added to a setup project. However, this means installing a bunch of setup dependencies onto development machines, which seems messy (and which could destabilize the development environment if someone accidentally runs the setup project on their machine). Also, how do we manage third-party dependencies? For example, if the current maintenance branch used MSXML 3.0 and the trunk now requires MSXML 4.0, we can't go back and create a maintenance release if we have already replaced the MSXML library on the build machine with the latest version (assuming both versions have the same filename). The only solution I can think is to either put all the third-party dependencies in Subversion along with the source code, or to make sure we put different library versions in separate folders (i.e. C:\Setup\Dependencies\MSXML\v3.0 and C:\Setup\Dependencies\MSXML\v4.0). Is one way "better" or more common than the other? Are there any best practices for dealing with this situation? Basically, if we release v2.0 of our software, we want to be able to release v2.0.1, v2.0.2, and v.2.0.3 while we work on v2.1, but the whole setup/installation project and setup dependency issue is making this more complicated than the typical "just create a branch in Subversion and recompile as needed" answer.

• Partial view links not working in Fire Fox

  I have a MVC4 asp.net application, I have two layouts a main layout for the main page and a second layout for the nested pages. The problem I have is with the second layout, on this layout I call a partial view which has my navigation links. In IE the navigation menu displays fine and when each item is clicked it navigates as expected. However in FF when the page renders the navigation bar is displayed but it has no 'click functionality' if you will its as if its simply text. I have an existing Invoice entity (which I create on a separate form) and then I have a LogHours view that I'd like to use to save InvoiceLog's, which are child entities of Invoice. • Passing integer lists in a sql query, best practices

  I'm currently looking at ways to pass lists of integers in a SQL query, and try to decide which of them is best in which situation, what are the benefots of each, and what are the pitfalls, what should be avoided :) Right now I know of 3 ways that we currently use in our application. 1) Table valued parameter: Create a new Table Valued Parameter in sql server: CREATE TYPE [dbo].[TVP_INT] AS TABLE( [ID] [int] NOT NULL ) Then run the query against it: using (var conn = new SqlConnection(DataContext.GetDefaultConnectionString)) { var comm = conn.CreateCommand(); comm.CommandType = CommandType.Text; comm.CommandText = @" UPDATE DA SET [tsLastImportAttempt] = CURRENT_TIMESTAMP FROM [Account] DA JOIN @values IDs ON DA.ID = IDs.ID"; comm.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("values", downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).ToDataTable()) { TypeName = "TVP_INT" }); conn.Open(); comm.ExecuteScalar(); } The major disadvantages of this method is the fact that Linq doesn't support table valued params (if you create an SP with a TVP param, linq won't be able to run it) :( 2) Convert the list to Binary and use it in Linq! This is a bit better.. Create an SP, and you can run it within linq :) To do this, the SP will have an IMAGE parameter, and we'll be using a user defined function (udf) to convert this to a table.. We currently have implementations of this function written in C++ and in assembly, both have pretty much the same performance :) Basically, each integer is represented by 4 bytes, and passed to the SP. Both these methods are theoretically unlimited, so you can pass millions of ints at a time :) 3) The simple linq .Contains() It's a more simple approach, and is perfect in simple scenarios. But is of course limited by this. using (var db = new DataContext()) { var accounts = db.Accounts .Where(a => downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).Contains(a.ID)); } The biggest drawback of this method is that each integer in the downloadResults variable will be passed as a separate int.. In this case, the query is limited by sql (max allowed parameters in a sql query, which is a couple of thousand, if I remember right). So I'd like to ask.. What do you think is the best of these, and what other methods and approaches have I missed?

Please could someone help me in constructing a proper unordered list based on my depth,itemid coulumns? Thanks.

However, it doesnt always work for the same query. Looking at the raw xml I can see the namespaces change, e.g. sometimes ns2="http://www.intuit.com/sb/cdm/qbo" (works) and other times ns2 = "http://www.intuit.com/sb/cdm/v2" (doesnt work). I thought by using the namespaces array I could handle that issue but its not working. • Nginx + PHP-FPM executes script, but returns 404

  I am using Nginx + PHP-FPM to run a Wordpress based site. I have a URL that should return dynamically generated JSON data for use with the DataTables jQuery plugin. The data is returned properly, but with a return code of 404. I think this is a Nginx config issue, but I haven't been able to figure out why. The script 'getTable.php' works properly on the production version of the site which is currently using Apache. Anyone know how I can get this to work on Nginx? • A little bit of Ajax goes a long way

  ..except when you're having problems. My problem is this: I have a hierarchical list of categories stored in a database which I wish to output in a dropdown list. The hierarchy comes into place when the subcategories are to be displayed, which are dependent on a parent id (which equals out to the first seven or so main categories listed). My thoughts are relatively simple: when the user clicks the dynamically allocated list of main categories, they are clicking on an option tag. For each option tag, an id (i.e., the parent) is listed in the value attribute, as well as an argument which is sent to a Javascript function which then uses AJAX to get the data via PHP and sends it to my 'javascript.php' file. The file then does magic, and populates the subcategory list, which is dependent on the main category selected. I believe I have the idea down, it's just that I'm implementing the solution improperly, for some reason. I also receive an "undefined index" error (which refers to the key I set for the data type). I'm thinking that for some reason, the data is being sent to my form.php file, or my default.php file which includes both the form.php and javascript.php files via a function. Is there something specific that I'm missing here? Just looking up basic AJAX syntax (via jQuery) hasn't helped out, unfortunately.

So, test-context.xml is under src/test/resources/, how do I indicate this in the pom.xml so that 'mvn test' command will work? Thanks, UPDATE: Thanks for the reply. Cannot load context file error was caused by I moved the file arround in different location since I though the classpath was the problem. • Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. • Techniques for modeling a dynamic dataflow with Java concurrency API

  Is there an elegant way to model a dynamic dataflow in Java? By dataflow, I mean there are various types of tasks, and these tasks can be "connected" arbitrarily, such that when a task finishes, successor tasks are executed in parallel using the finished tasks output as input, or when multiple tasks finish, their output is aggregated in a successor task (see flow-based programming). By dynamic, I mean that the type and number of successors tasks when a task finishes depends on the output of that finished task, so for example, task A may spawn task B if it has a certain output, but may spawn task C if has a different output. Another way of putting it is that each task (or set of tasks) is responsible for determining what the next tasks are. Sample dataflow for rendering a webpage: I have as task types: file downloader, HTML/CSS renderer, HTML parser/DOM builder, image renderer, JavaScript parser, JavaScript interpreter. File downloader task for HTML file HTML parser/DOM builder task File downloader task for each embedded file/link If image, image renderer If external JavaScript, JavaScript parser JavaScript interpreter Otherwise, just store in some var/field in HTML parser task JavaScript parser for each embedded script JavaScript interpreter Wait for above tasks to finish, then HTML/CSS renderer (obviously not optimal or perfectly correct, but this is simple) I'm not saying the solution needs to be some comprehensive framework (in fact, the closer to the JDK API, the better), and I absolutely don't want something as heavyweight is say Spring Web Flow or some declarative markup or other DSL. To be more specific, I'm trying to think of a good way to model this in Java with Callables, Executors, ExecutorCompletionServices, and perhaps various synchronizer classes (like Semaphore or CountDownLatch). There are a couple use cases and requirements: Don't make any assumptions on what executor(s) the tasks will run on. In fact, to simplify, just assume there's only one executor. It can be a fixed thread pool executor, so a naive implementation can result in deadlocks (e.g. imagine a task that submits another task and then blocks until that subtask is finished, and now imagine several of these tasks using up all the threads). To simplify, assume that the data is not streamed between tasks (task output-succeeding task input) - the finishing task and succeeding task won't exist together, so the input data to the succeeding task will not be changed by the preceeding task (since it's already done). There are only a couple operations that the dataflow "engine" should be able to handle: A mechanism where a task can queue more tasks A mechanism whereby a successor task is not queued until all the required input tasks are finished A mechanism whereby the main thread (or other threads not managed by the executor) blocks until the flow is finished A mechanism whereby the main thread (or other threads not managed by the executor) blocks until certain tasks have finished Since the dataflow is dynamic (depends on input/state of the task), the activation of these mechanisms should occur within the task code, e.g. the code in a Callable is itself responsible for queueing more Callables. The dataflow "internals" should not be exposed to the tasks (Callables) themselves - only the operations listed above should be available to the task. Note that the type of the data is not necessarily the same for all tasks, e.g. a file download task may accept a File as input but will output a String. If a task throws an uncaught exception (indicating some fatal error requiring all dataflow processing to stop), it must propagate up to the thread that initiated the dataflow as quickly as possible and cancel all tasks (or something fancier like a fatal error handler). Tasks should be launched as soon as possible. This along with the previous requirement should preclude simple Future polling + Thread.sleep(). As a bonus, I would like to dataflow engine itself to perform some action (like logging) every time task is finished or when no has finished in X time since last task has finished. Something like: ExecutorCompletionService<T> ecs; while (hasTasks()) { Future<T> future = ecs.poll(1 minute); some_action_like_logging(); if (future != null) { future.get() ... } ... } Are there straightforward ways to do all this with Java concurrency API? Or if it's going to complex no matter what with what's available in the JDK, is there a lightweight library that satisfies the requirements? I already have a partial solution that fits my particular use case (it cheats in a way, since I'm using two executors, and just so you know, it's not related at all to the web browser example I gave above), but I'd like to see a more general purpose and elegant solution.

• Preventing multiple repeat selection of synchronized Controls ?

  The working code sample here synchronizes (single) selection in a TreeView, ListView, and ComboBox via the use of lambda expressions in a dictionary where the Key in the dictionary is a Control, and the Value of each Key is an Action<int. Where I am stuck is that I am getting multiple repetitions of execution of the code that sets the selection in the various controls in a way that's unexpected : it's not recursing : there's no StackOverFlow error happening; but, I would like to figure out why the current strategy for preventing multiple selection of the same controls is not working. Perhaps the real problem here is distinguishing between a selection update triggered by the end-user and a selection update triggered by the code that synchronizes the other controls ? Note: I've been experimenting with using Delegates, and forms of Delegates like Action<T>, to insert executable code in Dictionaries : I "learn best" by posing programming "challenges" to myself, and implementing them, as well as studying, at the same time, the "golden words" of luminaries like Skeet, McDonald, Liberty, Troelsen, Sells, Richter. Note: Appended to this question/code, for "deep background," is a statement of how I used to do things in pre C#3.0 days where it seemed like I did need to use explicit measures to prevent recursion when synchronizing selection. My problem is that the exception that i am throwing to handle in the error handler doesn;t get the exception passed to it. My service implementation simply calls a method on another class that throws ArgumentOutOfRangeException - however this exception never gets handled by the handler.   I have this code, but can't get it all working. I am trying to get a json string into xml. So that I can get a list of items when i parse the data. Is there a better way to parse json into xml. If so what's the best way to do it, and if possible could you give me a working example? • LinkButtons Created Dynamically in a Repeater Don't Fire ItemCommand Event

  Hi. I've got a repeater that's used to display the output of a dynamic report that takes criteria from webcontrols on the page. Within the repeater's ItemDataBound method I'm adding controls (Linkbuttons for sorting by column values) dynamically to the header of the repeater based on values selected in a checkbox list and at this point setting the CommandArgument and CommandName properties of the linkbuttons. The issue is that when the linkbuttons are clicked they don't fire the ItemCommand event although they are clearly being correctly created and added to the header (there is some additional code to set the cssClass, text etc. and this works as expected.) The first column header in the repeater is set in the markup and the itemcommand event fires correctly on this one only. When the other column headers are clicked the repeater rebinds as programmed, but the columns are not dynamically re-generated. • eXML-PARSER output contains unwanted hash references

  So I wrote a parser routine to take one xml file and reparse into another one. This code I later modified to split a large xml file into many small xml files. I am having a problem with an output.   I did some googling and figured I'm probably experiencing so called "event bubbling" that I've never heard of but are not surprised by it's existance. I want it to fire only once and I'm wondering how to fix this. Basically, I have this small code snippet: $('.bggallery_images').click(function () { alert('test'); }); This is supposed to fire once from a php snippet that basically adds an image of each image from a specific folder. It then outputs an echo string where each image has the class of "bggallery_images".   Hello in my Asp.net web page (C# on backend) I use a Repeater, whose items consist of a title and a Flex chart (embedded .swf file). I am trying to export the contents of the Repeater to a Word document. My problem is to convert the SWF files into images and pass it on to the Word document. The swf object has a public function which returns a byteArray representation of itself (public function grabScreen():ByteArray), but I do not know how to call it directly from c#. I have access to the mxml files, so I can make modifications to the swf files, if needed.
