• How to include javascript/css once with Struts 1.x

  If this is the wrong approach, please suggest something better, but my current efforts have been trying to find something that exists for a single page load, such that I can cache which javascript/css files have been included so as to only include them once. I thought in a TagSupport subclass I could use (HttpServletRequest)pageContext.getRequest().getParameterMap().put(srcKey,true) but the request is per jsp, not per page load so it was a failure. I could set up a filter in web.xml, but it seems I would have to search the response for duplicates and rewrite the response...pain. I could try to store things in the session, but there are headaches with clearing values... Any help would be appreciated.

• Avoiding Redundancies in XML documents

  I was working with a certain XML where there were no redundancies <person> <eye> <eye_info> <eye_color> blue </eye_color> </eye_info> </eye> <hair> <hair_info> <hair_color> blue </hair_color> </hair_info> </hair> </person> As you can see, the sub-tag eye-color makes reference to eye in it's name, so there was no need to avoid redundancies, I could get the eye color in a single line after loading the XML into a dataset: dataset.ReadXml(path); value = dataset.Tables("eye_info").Rows(0)("eye_color"); I do realise it's not the smartest way of doing so, and this situation I'm having now wasn't unforeseen. Now, let's say I have to read xml's that are in this format: <person> <eye> <info> <color> blue </color> </info> </eye> <hair> <info> <color> blue </color> </info> </hair> </person> So If I try to call it like this: dataset.ReadXml(path); value = dataset.Tables("info").Rows(0)("color"); There will be a redundancy, because I could only go as far as one up level to identify a single field in a XML with my previous method, and the 'disambiguator' is three levels above. Is there a practical way to reach with no mistake a single field given all the above (or at least a few) fields ?

• Using git branches for variations of a project

  I'm using git's branching feature to manage 5 variations of a small website. There are 5 versions that will all be live in different subdirectories on production. My approach to checking out the various branches to their respective folders was to: mkdir foo && cd foo git init git remote add origin git@...:project.git git fetch origin foo:foo Where "foo" is a given branch name. This was fine, except for that it pulled my entire repo (designs, as3 source, etc...) into those branch folders instead of just the public www folder, which is the only thing I really want on production. Is there a cleaner way to handle this? Git can't clone subdirectories right?

• How do I access variables with hyphenated names in Smarty?

  I've got a PHP page that parses an XML file with SimpleXml, then passes that object to a Smarty template. My problem is that the XML file has hyphens in its tag names, e.g. video-player. In PHP, this is no problem, I just use $xml->{'video-player'} and everything's fine. Smarty, on the other hand, throws a fit when I try to use that syntax. The only solution I've come up with so far is to use a variable to store the name, e.g., { assign var=name value="video-player" } { $xml->$name } But this isn't terribly graceful to say the least. Is there another, better, approach to referring to a hyphenated variable name in Smarty?

• Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

  My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it? • Using "class/object" MooTools-style events in jQuery

  One of the nice things about MooTools, is that it lets you easily assign/fire events to objects, for example: var playerSingleton = new (new Class({ Implements: [Events], initialize: function() {}, setVolume: function() { // do some stuff.. this.fireEvent('volumeChanged') } })); // Somewhere else... playerSingleton.addEvent('volumeChanged', function() { // do something when volume changes }); playerSingleton.setVolume(75); // bam our event fires. How would something like this be done with jQuery? I know there's .bind and .trigger, but it seems like the only way to do this is to bind/fire events to the window object: $(window).bind('volumeChanged', fn); Is there anything better than this, more like the MooTools approach?   Hello, I would like to achive the same functinoanlity in the UUTextField control as Google search web site (which uses Ajax for this): as user start typing, list of suggestion searches is shown. Then more letteres you type, suggestion list changes. So imaging I have array of words: Apple Abc Aman As user types A, all thress suggesions are shown, if user type one more letter p, then Apple is suggested. How would I do something like this? Mail type of applicatins do it, when receipent name is typed in the To: edit control I guess I can use UITableView with the search, is it correct approach?

• paypal redirect on successful checkout

  I am trying to get my Paypal subscription to redirect to a custom page after a successful checkout. Before submitting to Paypal I overload the submit handler, run my own function (to store details) and return a unique id. I want to attach that id to my return URL. (as a GET or POST var so to speak) I have turned auto redirect "on" in my Paypal sandbox sellers preferences, but it only seems to re-direct to the URL that I HAVE to put in there. using the <input type="hidden" name="return" value="someurl" /> does no seem to work. I want it this way so that I can capture the user information when entered with a "non-paid" flag, then via the IPN I can update that record with a "PAID" flag, and I want to use the unique ID to tie it all together so to speak. Any advice or a different approach is welcomed. Many thanks!

• Getting a char array from a vector<int>?

  I am trying to pass a value from C++ to TCL. As I cannot pass pointers without the use of some complicated modules, I was thinking of converting a vector to a char array and then passing this as a null terminated string (which is relatively easy). I have a vector as follows: 12, 32, 42, 84 which I want to convert into something like: "12 32 42 48" The approach I am thinking of is to use an iterator to iterate through the vector and then convert each integer into its string representation and then add it into a char array (which is dynamically created initially by passing the size of the vector). Is this the right way or is there a function that already does this?

• Selecting a UserControl from XAML

  I'm working on a problem right now where I need to embed a UserControl inside another UserControl. But, I need to determine at runtime which embedded UserControl to instantiate. This implies to me that some form of data binding and/or template selection mechanism has to be invoked, but I'm not sure how to proceed with the pure XAML approach. If I was to do this with code, I would define some sort of container control in the parent UserControl, and then in the code-behind, implement some logic which would instantiate the appropriate child UserControl and then insert it as Content into the specified container in the parent UserControl. Can this be done using only XAML, or is some sort of code-behind required?

• NSKeyedArchiver save method ( that i made) crashed the iphone simulator

  i saw this approach on a tutorial, and the message is working for their example but when i implement this it does not work. from what i can tell the iphone simulator crashes when i do a [ self saveSettingsData]. TheSettings is class object that i declare and initialize in the appdelagate with these methods. the error says terminating due to uncaught exception. i am new to the iphone sdk and objective, so i really can't figure out what is going on thanks to any one who can help, i am ready to literally pull my hair out. • Unit Testing, IDataContext and Stored Procedures via Linq

  hey folks, I'm currently using Stephen Walther's approach to unit testing Linq to SQL and the datacontext (http://stephenwalther.com/blog/archive/2008/08/17/asp-net-mvc-tip-33-unit-test-linq-to-sql.aspx) which is working a treat for all things linq. My Dal layer takes in an IDataContext, I use DI (via Unity) to concrete that up as the correct DataContext object and all works well. But - we have a company policy here of writes going via Stored Procs. Has anyone come up with a solution for mocking/faking the data context and still allowing stored procs to effectively be unit tested? I've got no real experience of any of the mocking frameworks (Rhino etc.) so if these are the correct means of doing this, I'd love some pointers on guides for them. Many thanks, Terry

• How To Aggregate API Data?

  Hi, I have a system that connects to 2 popular APIs. I need to aggregate the data from each into a unified result that can then be paginated. The scope of the project means that the system could end up supporting 10's of APIs. Each API imposes a max limit of 50 results per request. What is the best way of aggregating this data so that it is reliable i.e ordered, no duplicates etc I am using CakePHP framework on a LAMP environment, however, I think this question relates to all programming languages. My approach so far is to query the search API of each provider and then populate a MySQL table. From this the results are ordered, paginated etc. However, my concern is performance: API communication, parsing, inserting and then reading all in one execution. Am I missing something, does anyone have any other ideas? I'm sure this is a common problem with many alternative solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

• What are the pros and cons of using an in memeory DB rather than a ThreadLocal

  we have been using ThreadLocal so far to carry some data so as to not clutter the API. However below are some of issues of using thread local that which I dont like 1) over the years the data items being carried in thread local has increased 2) Since we started using threads (for some light weight processing), we have also migrating these data to the threads in the pool and copying them back again I am thinking of using an in memory DB for these (we doesnt want to add this to the API). I wondering if this approach is good. What r the pros and cons. thx in advance.

  Given a word jumble (i.e. ofbaor), what would be an approach to unscramble the letters to create a real word (i.e. foobar)? I could see this having a couple of approaches, and I think I know how I'd do it in .NET, but I curious to see what some other solutions look like (always happy to see if my solution is optimal or not). This isn't homework or anything like that, I just saw a word jumble in the local comics section of the paper (yes, good ol' fashioned newsprint), and the engineer in me started thinking.

• How can I "best fit" an arbitrary cairo (pycairo) path?

  It seems like given the information in stroke_extents() and the translate(x, y) and scale(x, y) functions, I should be able to take any arbitrary cairo (I'm using pycairo) path and "best fit" it. In other words, center it and expand it to fill the available space. Before drawing the path, I have scaled the canvas such that the origin is the lower left corner, up is y+, right is x+, and the height and width are both 1. Given these conditions, this code seems to correctly scale the path: # cr is the canvas extents = cr.stroke_extents() x_size = abs(extents[0]) + abs(extents[2]) y_size = abs(extents[1]) + abs(extents[3]) cr.scale(1.0 / x_size, 1.0 / y_size) I cannot for the life of me figure out the translating though. Is there a simpler approach? How can I "best fit" a cairo path on its canvas? Please ask for clarification if anything is unclear in this question.

• managing library dependencies with Boost.Build and C++

  I want to develop a project which can be built on a bunch of different platforms. The project code will be in C++, what's the the best way to manage libraries? I plan on using bjam as the build system because I'm going to be depending on Boost and their unit testing framework as well. The two dependent libraries are Boost itself and FLTK. The possibilities that come to mind for library management are: include build artifacts (binaries) and headers for all supported platforms in-tree include complete source for all dependent libraries in-tree, and somehow script them as dependencies A combination of 1 and 2, like node.js does with v8 inform the user that they need to build the libraries themselves and then have them on the PATH or in some special directory, like libcurl does with its dependencies What is the best approach here? The project will probably not grow beyond a few thousand lines over the next six months, but I want to make the right choice here so that I don't have to come back and switch everything around later.

  I have an idea for an app/game which is basically a build your own bracelet. I will give to the user, say, 5 different types of beads, and the user and drag those beads into a line that is previously drawn in the screen and create his/her bracelet. I am now thinking on the best way to approach this. Would be using the android's OpenGL libraries (and therefore, creating the beads and loading its textures) the best and easiest way? So I need a tail() method that can read n lines from the bottom and supports an offset. • SetSel on EN_SETFOCUS or WM_SETFOCUS doesn't work

  I've ran into next mystic thing in Winapi/MFC, I have an edit box, contents of which I have to select on Tab, Lclick, Rclick, Mclick and so on. The sort of obvious path is to handle the SETFOCUS message and call SetSel(0, -1), which should select all text. But it doesn't work! What's wrong? I tried googling, everyone seems to override Lclilks or handle SetSel in parent windows, but this is wrong from encapsulation point of view, also multiple clicks (user wants to insert something in the middle of the text) will break, and so on. Why isn't my approach working, I tried like 10 different ways, tried to trap all possible focus messages, looked up info on MSDN, but nothing works as expected. Also, I need to recreate the carret on focus, which also doesn't seem to work. SETFOCUS message gets trapped alright. If I add __asm int 3, it breaks every time. It's the create carret and setsel that gets swallowed it seems.

• [java] Efficiency of while(true) ServerSocket Listen

  I am wondering if a typical while(true) ServerSocket listen loop takes an entire core to wait and accept a client connection (Even when implementing runnable and using Thread .start()) I am implementing a type of distributed computing cluster and each computer needs every core it has for computation. A Master node needs to communicate with these computers (invoking static methods that modify the algorithm's functioning). The reason I need to use sockets is due to the cross platform / cross language capabilities. In some cases, PHP will be invoking these java static methods. I used a java profiler (YourKit) and I can see my running ServerSocket listen thread and it never sleeps and it's always running. Is there a better approach to do what I want? Or, will the performance hit be negligible? Please, feel free to offer any suggestion if you can think of a better way (I've tried RMI, but it isn't supported cross-language. Thanks everyone

  Hi there, I've got a bunch of products with sizes to ship and I need to find out the cheapest rate. Given a shipment made out of sizes, say [1,3,3,5] I need to decide how to ship - all together or separate. However it's not as simple as [1,3,3,5] or 1 & 3 & 3 & 5, i need all of the possible combinations something like: [ [[1,3,3,5]], ( 1 shipment ) [[1],[3,3,5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3],[3,5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3,3],[5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,5],[3,3]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3],[3],[5]], ( 3 shipments ) [[1],[3],[3],[5]] ( 4 shipments ) ] ( etc - many more i assume ) I've tried combinations from the facets gem but it's not quite what i'm after, and I'm not sure how else to approach this problem. I understand it probably has a name and a solution if only I knew the name :) I understand there could be a lot of combinations, but the initial array of sizes won't be larger than 7 or so. • How to find a coding buddy

  I was reading Jeff Atwood's blog and he mentioned that he was suffering from code-paralysis (he called it analysis paralysis, but I feel like it's also code paralysis) when he didn't have a code buddy: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/ Unfortunately I think that Jeff has set the bar a bit high, because he only works with developers who are really amazing. The only reason really amazing developers would work with me is if I was really amazing too, but sometimes I don't feel that amazing... the only thing I feel is that if I had a coding buddy I could be amazing :). I'm working on a project and I don't have many friends that are programmers, let alone friends that have time to spend on extracurricular activities. Jeff seems to have been able to find like-minded people that are actually willing to work together. I feel like I'm in a code-paralysis stage too and I need some coding buddies, where would I find some? How would I approach them?
