• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! • Jokes search engine / PHP based search engine on database

  I'm looking for a script, functioning like the Google homepage that fetches data from a database rather than the internet. This is not intended to be a search engine, but a repository of jokes that can be pulled depending on the keywords typed. No sophisticated search techniques are required - keyword based is perfectly fine. If some mechanism of up/down-voting jokes can be incorporated, that would be fantastic, but I'm presuming that will be an entirely different game.

• Webhosting with custom database choice [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am trying to find somewhere to host a website which uses OrientDB as its database. My budget doesn't stretch to a dedicated server where I can configure everything as I need it. Rather, I am hoping to find somewhere, ideally UK based, that will allow me to install/install for me OrientDB on their server, that is of the normal shared server variety. Is anybody able to point me in a good direction for this please (whilst UK is preferable it is not essential)?

• Photo management utilities

  I'm about to develop a web site for a new client. It's not going to be very intense, but one requirement is that, if possible, the client wants to be able to manage the photo gallery themselves. Since they are not technically savvied at all, I was wondering what utilities exist that provide a GUI for users to log in to manage photos. Can anyone make a recontamination? I haven't purchased the web hosting yet, so if your answer requires a specific type of host server don't worry, I am open to options.

• Advice on software infrastructure for a FLOSS bounty site

  I am planning to set up a simple web site where people can offer bounties for work on FLOSS projects. Unfortunately I have no experience at web development (I am a C/C++ developer), so I was hoping someone might be able to suggest out-of-the-box packages (preferably Debian ones) I could use to build the site from. My idea of how the site would work is to keep things as simple as possible. The person proposing a bounty would enter a description with relevant links (particularly to a bugtracker entry with the project the work is to be done on, where the real discussion and work would take place) and information and place an initial contribution. Other people would be able to add (donate, not pledge) contributions, but any discussion would take place on the project's bugtracker. I am also planning to run a mailing list rather than a forum (at least initially), so that is not a requirement. Paypal seems to me to be the handiest payment mechanism. So overall what I need is probably a simple interface with Paypal integration and a simple database backend. I hope this is the right place for my question, if not I would be grateful for pointers to somewhere better. And of course, this is purely about the technical side, though I am more than happy to discuss other aspects of the project elsewhere.

  My Step Father is starting his own company, and he gets the wonderful life of having to deal with multiple clients. He needs a calendar system that can do the following: Can be updated from iCal (I'm pretty sure this just means CalDAV support) Needs to be able to show different clients the details of whats on his calendar for them, while showing other client's arranged times as only busy Wants to show it in a professional way, preferably on his own website. I was looking at Google Calendar, but alas it doesn't seem to actually support it like I thought it would. He was looking at MobileMe, but its simply public. Is there a calendar app or PHP application that can be installed on his server that can do this?

• Pagination and duplicate content

  I have an archive page that displays the number of articles published. Because there were so many, I ran a pagination script: for 127.0.0.1/archive/2/?p=x&pp=y where p is the page number and pp is number of articles to display per page. The pagination looks like this: Prev 1 2 3 4 ... 12 NEXT with each item linking to p like <a href="?p=x">x</a>. I also have the items per page setter: 25 | 50 | 100 (<a href="?pp=y">y</a>). Now I have a PHP script that fixes pp into a session variable. But I am worried about duplicate content (since incrementing pp values will be inclusive) and also content not getting indexed because its not in the pagination link. so in the example above, pages 5-11 will not be indexed. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  Im familiar with seo and getting higher google listings but for allot of services google has recently been making there search results (were applicable) much more location orientated.. for instance searching for a "accountant in london" or "accountancy firm london" will through return the first half of page 1 as google places listings, then under about 6 of these you will get your normal search results so somone who used to rank #1 on page 1 now will rank effectily #7. What i was wandering is that i cant see any reasons as to why the company that rank high in the places results get there, often they are not high up in the search results. Is there a way to optimise on or offsite to rise up the google places listings in your city ?

• How to SEO Optimize Javascript Image Loader?

  I am building an image-centric catalog website. It catalogs collectible gaming cards numbering 100,000+ pages. Competitor sites recieve millions of hits each month, so with the possibility of excessive traffic, I need to moderate image bandwidth while also optimizing for image SEO. I'm looking for some tips on doing so. Each page on the site features one card with appropriate tags and descriptions. There are however four images for each card - one on matte cardstock, one on foil cardstock, one digital, and one digital foil. In a world with unlimited bandwidth and no-wait page loads, I'd simply embed all four images on the main product page with titles, alt tags, and captions to rank them according to their version keyword. In reality a javascript gallery image loader seems appropriate. Here is a simplified example of my current code. Would this affect SEO in any way? Should I be doing anything differently? Note that I don't want to create a page for each image as I'd have to duplicate the card tags and descriptions on each one, diluting PR for the main page. • joomla subscription ecommerce solution

  I am using Joomla and want to implement a subscription based ecommerce solution. I started using VirtueMart and noticed its shortcomings regarding subscription based recurring items. Turns out Virtuemart can take its own plugins and I found something called SimSu which I don't want to pay for. I feel like I have taken a nuke to a knife fight, as I only need one or two subscription based products on this site. They will be recurring payments. Is anyone familiar with a solution for this issue?

  I changed the structure of my urls. The pages are indexed by google and have the following structure http://mypage.com/myfolder/page.apsx The new structure is http://mypage.com/page.aspx Now all urls that google knows are wrong. How can I tell google to reindex and that the structure has changed? Internally I redirect in ASP.NET when the url contains the myfolder by I want google to update the urls.

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

• My colleague can't visit our website through her provider after long downtime

  We did a frontpage update some days ago that caused the site to crash. The site was down for several hours. After troubleshooting, we concluded that we needed to cache more content. It had been run too many queries. After solving that and rebooting of server, we here in Sweden and Norway were again able to visit the site. But a colleague in Tunisia couldn't. It seems to work from another internet provider but not her own. What could have happened? And what should we do? Edit: I should add: She is able to visit the site through tunnel at anonymouse.org.

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working. • Cropping images & SEO

  So I have a page with a bunch of images with largely varying sizes. Also the layout of the page is such that the images are all in the shape of square tiles, so just resizing will cause distorted images. What I've been doing previously is when users upload images, I resize and crop them appropriately and display the new image as the thumbnail and load full image when user clicks on it. However, I just realized this is an issue with SEO as google will crawl the thumbnails and stick the thumbnails on Google Images instead of the full images. Is there any way to show a cropped/resized image but have Google Image show the full image? I can do something with css using an enclosing div and overflow:hidden, but I'd imagine the performance on that would be pretty bad. Any suggestions? Thanks! PS. I saw this (Make google index the actual image not the thumbnail), but in my case I have users continuously uploading images, and the database of images is always changing and pretty big (thousands), so sitemap will be pretty unwieldy..

• SEO effect on retiring a subdomain

Due to a site redesign we had to consolidate the domains and the content of abc.mysite.com/* now started appearing in mysite.com/abc/*. After this change I am seeing sharp decline in SEO traffic. I have proper 301 redirects in place, but still the SEO is degrading by day. Any insights on why this may be happening?

• Can you add doubleclick macros to exisiting ads

  Setup: A few weeks back I made some very simple html5 "ads" to run on a few of our partner sites. They weren't paid ads as we also manage these sites, however there are a few of them, so I made a modular solution that is hosted on one of our web servers and included on each page via javascript which outputs an iframe. Each search (ad has a search box) or click appends a url param that we track using custom vars in Google Analytics. In essence, the ad is a HTML page served in an iframe via javscript. Problem: We have an opportunity to run these ads on a third party site, I had sent them a brief how-to for inserting them and they came back saying that: The creative code doesn't contain the %u macro. We can’t substitute the default click-through URL without it. I am somewhat familiar with doubleclick from a web developer's POV, i have inserted DC dart tags before and even have implemented the ad tool for publishers. I have not, however, actually ever created an ad for the doubleclick network before. I assume the publisher needs these tags to track clicks and hence charge us. However, they have not responded to me in regards to these questions. Are macros something I can just add to or replace the existing links with, or do I need to completely setup the ad with doubleclcik - a big issue in the short term given we do not have a advertiser's account set up with them. • Best method to do A B testing across to subdomains

  I want to do an A B test of an entire site for a new design and UX with only slight changes in content (a big brand site that has good Google rankings for many generic keywords. My idea of implementation is doing a 302 redirect to the new version (placing it on www1 subdomain) and allowing only user agents of known browsers to pass. The test version will have disallow all in the robots text. Will Google treat this favorably or do I have to use Google Website Optimizer (which will give me tracking headaches)?

• Has Microsoft stopped offering the free Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image for IE 6 testing?

  For some time now, Microsoft has made available free, stripped-down, time-limited Virtual PC images for testing web apps in older versions of IE. The most recent version is here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=11575 But the XP VPC image has now expired (14th Aug 2011), meaning one can no longer test IE 6 using this method. Have Microsoft made updated XP VPC images available? If not, have they commented on the situation? Do they provide any alternative method to test web apps in IE 6? Update As noted by @PleaseStand, as of 16th Aug 2011, Microsoft has made updated images available that expire on 17th November 2011.

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. • Meta Description or Title For Post Contents

  I have a site that has posts without titles. You can think of them as being a lot like Twitter tweets. Should I put the post contents in the meta title tag or the description tag? If I put the post contents in one of the tags what should I put in the other? My challenge is that we have very short amounts of content with no titles. I want to avoid having too many duplicate titles or descriptions. We have things like user name, full name, date, etc.
