• Choosing a source control system: logical next steps after VSS

  I've been using Git for the past few months and love it. I looked into how to host it in a corporate environment. Considering a 10 person team who use Visual SourceSafe, programming in Coldfusion, Powerbuilder, PHP and a bit of .NET, I found, to my surprise, that the Git 'server' tooling is still fairly rudimentary. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1761054/git-in-a-company-hosting-own-server Question Apart from SVN, what other source control options would be a logical next step after VSS? Paid options are fine. Something with nice tooling, that isn't scary would be great :-)

• Function to hide sloppy phone numbers..

  I need to hide phone numbers (and maybe other contact details) in user generated content to protect my users from anonymous web. Input is very random, therefore I'd be looking to replace anything that looks like a phone number (e.g.: string of 3 or more numbers) with just dots, and also perhaps remove some exotic notations of e-mail addresses. What is the best way to do this? Nice and slick, reusable. Give away your secret regexes. Write in any language. • C# Custom Dictionary Take - Convert Back From IEnumerable

  Scenario Having already read a post on this on the same site, which didn't work, I'm feeling a bit stumped but I'm sure I've done this before. I have a Dictionary. I want to take the first 200 values from the Dictionary. CODE Dictionary<int,SomeObject> oldDict = new Dictionary<int,SomeObject>(); //oldDict gets populated somewhere else. Dictionary<int,SomeObject> newDict = new Dictionary<int,SomeObject>(); newDict = oldDict.Take(200).ToDictionary(); OBVIOUSLY, the take returns an IENumerable, so you have to run ToDictionary() to convert it back to a dictionary of the same type. HOWEVER, it just doesn't work, it wants some random key selector thing - or something? I have even tried just casting it but to no avail. Any ideas?

  i use such code string.Format("<img src='{0}'><br>", u.Avatar); u.Avatar-it's like '/img/path/pic.jpg' but in this site i can upload new image instead old pic.jpg. so picture new, but name is old. and browser show OLD picture (cache). if i put random number like /img/path/pic.jpg?123 then works fine, but i need it only ufter upload, not always. how can i solve this? ?????????? ??????

• A device specific alpha bitmap fails after switching resolutions in remote desktop

  All my alpha bitmaps, created using CreateCompatibleBitmap(..), start to receive an error code 87 after someone signs in with Remote Desktop. I am assuming that this is because the resolution changed and I am using a device specific bitmap. I am wondering what the best route is to fix this issue without migrating to a device independent bitmap? Some options are: 1) Detect remote desktop change and flag all bitmaps to be reloaded (I have done this but it does not work as well as I would like). 2) Wait for error code 87 to happen on an alphablend image that previously worked, and then reload it (was going to try this next, im sure it will work, but a little hacky) 3) Detect random event such as WM_DISPLAYCHANGE or _ that tells me when I should do this (ie: a device change event I'm guessing, or maybe something more specific?) 4) _? • Recommended Model Based Testing Tools

  Does anyone have any suggestions on what Model Based Testing Tools to use? Is Spec Explorer/SPEC# worth it's weight in tester training? What I have traditionally done is create a Visio Model where I call out the states and associated variables, outputs and expected results from each state. Then in a completely disconnected way, I data drive my test scripts with those variables based on that model. But, they are not connected. I want a way to create a model, associate the variables in a business friendly way, that will then build the data parameters for the scripts. I can't be the first person to need this. Is there a tool out there that will do basically that? Short of developing it myself.

  Given a EF-Code First CTP5 entity layout like: public class Person { ... } which has a collection of: public class Address { ... } which has a single association of: public class Mailbox { ... } I want to do: PersonQuery.Include(x => x.Addresses).Include("Addresses.Mailbox") WITHOUT using a magic string. I want to do it using a lambda expression. I am aware what I typed above will compile and will bring back all Persons matching the search criteria with their addresses and each addresses' mailbox eager loaded, but it's in a string which irritates me. • std::map operator[] and automatically created new objects

  I'm a little bit scared about something like this: std::map<DWORD, DWORD> tmap; tmap[0]+=1; tmap[0]+=1; tmap[0]+=1; Since DWORD's are not automatically initialized, I'm always afraid of tmap[0] being a random number that is incremented. How does the map know hot to initialize a DWORD if the runtime does not know how to do it? Is it guaranteed, that the result is always tmap[0] == 3?

I now got the following code which read all numbers except single numbers (1, 2, 3...) • Database of common translated phrases for localization?

  I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library. • JavaScript Intellisene Problem?

  I've got an issue with JavaScript intellisense in Visual Web Developer 2008, which I'm starting to believe is "just one of those things", but thought I'd ask here just to check. I have a file MyOtherFile.js with a function GetRandomNumber() defined like so: function GetRandomNumber() { /// <summary> /// Summary description for GetRandomNumber /// </summary> return Math.random(); } When I reference this from another file, screen.js (/// <reference path="MyOtherFile.js" />) I get the intellisense as expected with the summary text as above. If, however, I call the function GetRandomNumber from within its own file (MyOtherFile.js) then I don't get the sumamry description. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Matlab: how do I force ode45 to take steps of exactly 0.01 on the T axis?

  I'm using Matlab to solve a differential equation. I want to force ode45 to take constant steps, so it always increments 0.01 on the T axis while solving the equation. How do I do this? ode45 is consistently taking optimized, random steps, and I can't seem to work out how to make it take consistent, small steps of 0.01. • A cross between std::multimap and std::vector?

  I'm looking for a STL container that works like std::multimap, but has constant access time to random n-th element. I need this because I have such structure in memory that is std::multimap for many reasons, but items stored in it have to be presented to the user in a listbox. Since amount of data is huge, I'm using list box with virtual items (i.e. list control polls for value at line X). As a workaround I'm currently using additional std::vector to store "indexes" into std::map, and I fill it like this: std::vector<MMap::data_type&> vec; for (MMap::iterator it = mmap.begin(); it != mmap.end(); ++it) vec.push_back((*it).second); But this is not very elegant solution. Is there some such containter?

• OOP Design Question - Where/When do you Validate properties?

  I have read a few books on OOP DDD/PoEAA/Gang of Four and none of them seem to cover the topic of validation - it seems to be always assumed that data is valid. I gather from the answers to this post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1651964/oop-design-question-validating-properties) that a client should only attempt to set a valid property value on a domain object. Do you have a 'validator method' alongside every getter and setter? isValidName() setName() getName() I seem to be missing some key basic knowledge about OOP data validation - can you point me to a book that covers this topic in detail? - ie. covering different types of validation / invariants/ handling feedback / to use Exceptions or not etc

• Xpath to get the 2nd url with the matching text in the href tag

  A html page has paging links, 1 set at the top of the page and another on the bottom of the page. Using HtmlUnit, I am currently getting the HtmlAnchor on the page using getByAnchorText("1"); There is a problem in some of the links on the top, so I want to reference the bottom links using XPath. nextPageAnchor = (HtmlAnchor) page.getByXPath(""); How can I reference the 2nd link on the page, with using xpath? I need to reference the link using the AnchorText, so a link like: <a href="....">33</a> The href has random text, and is a javascript function so I have no idea what it will be. Is this possible with xpath?

• Some problem running NUnit

  I have NUnit installed at this directory. C:\Program Files\NUnit 2.5.5\bin\net-2.0 When I try to run my unit test (mut.dll) in some random directory. I get the following error. I have to copy the mut.dll under the NUnit directory in order to run it. ProcessModel: Default DomainUsage: Single Execution Runtime: net-2.0 Could not load file or assembly 'nunit.framework, Version=2.5.5.10112, Culture=n eutral, PublicKeyToken=96d09a1eb7f44a77' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. What's wrong? Is there anything that I have to configure to run NUNit under any directory?

• Algorithm: efficient way to remove duplicate integers from an array

  I got this problem from an interview with Microsoft. Given an array of random integers, write an algorithm in C that removes duplicated numbers and return the unique numbers in the original array. E.g Input: {4, 8, 4, 1, 1, 2, 9} Output: {4, 8, 1, 2, 9, ?, ?} One caveat is that the expected algorithm should not required the array to be sorted first. And when an element has been removed, the following elements must be shifted forward as well. Anyway, value of elements at the tail of the array where elements were shifted forward are negligible. Update: The result must be returned in the original array and helper data structure (e.g. hashtable) should not be used. However, I guess order preservation is not necessary. Update2: For those who wonder why these impractical constraints, this was an interview question and all these constraints are discussed during the thinking process to see how I can come up with different ideas.

• compare previous ENCRYPT() call with new ENCRYPT() call mysql

  I'm storing a string in mysql with the ENCRYPT() function. I want to fetch a row where that string is matched, but the new ENCRYPT() call gives me a different value, so they never match. This is expected as i'm not (and can't) give it a consistent salt: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/encryption-functions.html#function_encrypt If no salt argument is given, a random value is used. This is the query i'm running that returns empty: SELECT * FROM `table` WHERE ENCRYPT('string') = `enc_string` I know this is possible because this is used by a 3rd party app, but I can't find their query where they do this. Is there a way to force ENCRYPT to use the previous salt, or predict it?

  I sort of understand the concept of database normalization but always have a hard time explaining it in plain English especially for a job interview. I have read the wikipedia post, but still find it hard to explain the concept to none developers. "Design a database in a way not to get duplicated data" is the first thing that comes to mind. Does anyone was a nice way to explain the concept of database normalization in plain English. And what are some nice examples to show the differences between first, second and third normal forms. Say you go to a job interview and the person asks: Explain the concept of normalization and how would go about designing a normalized database. What key points are the interviewer looking for?

  I really enjoy attending unconference/BarCamp type events and getting to meet developers, designers etc. from different backgrounds and sharing ideas in person. However, I have trouble finding events as there does not seem to be one place where they are listed. Does anyone know of such a place? I also want to setup a Google Technology User Group in Bristol but again other that putting it on Linkedin, Facebook, Meetup.com etc. I don't really know how to get the information out to what would essentially be a niche group of developers. Any ideas?

• PHP - Processing Invalid XML

  I'm using SimpleXML to load in some xml files (which I didn't write/provide and can't really change the format of). Occasionally (eg one or two files out of every 50 or so) they don't escape any special characters (mostly &, but sometimes other random invalid things too). This creates and issue because SimpleXML with php just fails, and I don't really know of any good way to handle parsing invalid XML. My first idea was to preprocess the XML as a string and put ALL fields in as CDATA so it would work, but for some ungodly reason the XML I need to process puts all of its data in the attribute fields. Thus I can't use the CDATA idea. An example of the XML being: <Author v="By Someone & Someone" /> Whats the best way to process this to replace all the invalid characters from the XML before I load it in with SimpleXML?

• NHybernate, the Parallel Framework, and SQL Server

  hey guys, we have a loop that: 1.Loops over several thousand xml files. Altogether we're parsing millions of "user" nodes. 2.In each iteration we parse a "user" xml, do custom deserialization 3.finally, in each iteration, we send our object to nhibernate for saving. We use: .SaveOrUpdateAndFlush(user); This is a lengthy process, and we thought it would be a perfect candidate for testing out the .NET 4.0 Parallel libraries. So we wrapped the loop in a: Parallel.ForEach(); After doing this, we start getting "random" Timeout Exceptions from SQL Server, and finally, after leaving it running all night, OutOfMemory unhandled exceptions. I haven't done deep debugging on this yet, but what do you guys think. Is this simply a limitation of SQL Server, or could it be our NHibernate setup, or what? cheers andy
